The aberrations for the crystalline lens are obtained by subtracting the aberrations in cornea from that in complete eyes. It is shown that the combination between the crystalline lens and the cornea can be either a compensatory or an additive process. The combination between the anterior and the posterior corneal surfaces on the aberrations is complicated, compensatory or additive. The anterior corneal surface contributes mainly lower-order aberrations (astigmatism) of images, while the posterior corneal surface and the crystalline lens contribute mainly higher-order aberrations.展开更多

The data are categorized into reference group and starburst group according to the visual symptoms. Statistic analysis has been made to find the correlation between the ocular wavefront aberrations and the starburst symptom. The rms aberrations of the 3rd and 4th orders for the starburst group are significantly larger than those for the reference group. The starburst symptom shows a strong correlation with vertical coma, total coma, spherical aberrations. For 3-mm pupil size and 5.8-mm pupil size, the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the starburst group are lower than those of the reference group, but their visual acuities are close. MTF and PSF analyses are made for two groups, and the results are consistent with the statistical analysis, which means the difference between the two groups is mainly due to the third- and fourth-order Zernike aberrations.展开更多

In a prospective clinical trial, 48 myopic patients (96 eyes...The accommodative function before and after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was observed, and the effect of LASIK on accommodation was investigated. In a prospective clinical trial, 48 myopic patients (96 eyes) subject to bilateral LASIK in Refractive Surgery Center, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) from March 2006 to June 2006 were selected and studied. Refractions, accommodative range, amplitude of accommodative response and high frequency component (HFC) of accommodative microfluctuations were measured with NEDIK-730A before and one week and 30 days after operation. Dominant and non-dominant eyes were determined by hole-in-card method. It was found that all of the operative eyes showed an uncorrected visual acuity of 0.8 or better one week postoperatively, and 1.0 or better 30 days postoperatively. Compared with those preoperatively, accommodative range and HFC had no significant difference at first week and 30th day after operation in both dominant eyes and non-dominant eyes (P〉0.05), but there was a significant difference in the amplitude of accommodative response/accommodative stimulus ratio (A/S) after operation (P〈0.01), and no significant difference was found in accommodation between one week and 30 days postoperation. No ocular dominance's change was noted. There was no significant difference in accommodative function between dominant eyes and non-dominant eyes. It was suggested that LASIK produced no significant effect on accommodation.展开更多
AIM: To compare the outcomes of vision using two different intraocular lens(IOL) replacement techniques,iris-fixated foldable intraocular lens(IF-IOL) and scleralfixated foldable intraocular lens(SF-IOL) in pat...AIM: To compare the outcomes of vision using two different intraocular lens(IOL) replacement techniques,iris-fixated foldable intraocular lens(IF-IOL) and scleralfixated foldable intraocular lens(SF-IOL) in patients with insufficient capsular support.METHODS: Total 63 eyes(62 patients) with insufficient posterior capsule support underwent replacement of IF-IOL or SF-IOL between January 2008 and August 2011.Outcome measures included changes in visual acuity, slit lamp examination, refractive indices and corneal curvatures. RESULTS: The mean improvement of uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA) was greater in IF-IOL group compared to the SF-IOL group(0.43 D±0.19 D vs 0.35 D±0.18 D, P 〈0.05). Moreover, 12(38.71%) eyes in IF-IOL group and 4(12.50%) in SF-IOL group had a higher postoperative UCVA than preoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) while 9(29.03%) eyes in IF-IOLgroup and 18(56.25%) in SF-IOL group had a lower postoperative UCVA than preoperative BCVA. The myopic mean manifest sphere and mean cylinder magnitude were lower in the IF-IOL group than that in the SF-IOL group(-0.47 D±0.58 D vs 0.50 D±0.43 D, P 〈0.01; 0.84 D ±0.53 D vs 1.23 D ±0.70 D, P 〈0.05). No difference of corneal astigmatism and surgically induced astigmatism was found between the two groups. In addition, fewer complications were observed in IF-IOL eyes. CONCLUSION: IF-IOL implantation can give a significant improvement in vision with fewer complications than SF-IOL in patients with insufficient capsular support.展开更多

By employing the optical design software ZEMAX, we obtain the modulation transfer function (MTF) of human eye in visible wavelengths. Using CSV-1000 and VAF-1000, the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and the visual acuity (VA) for the same eye are measured. Then the AIM of human retina could be acquired by the relations between MTF and CSF and between MTF and VA. The AIM of human retina is independent of MTF, and the values of AIM for normal eyes (without retina disease) are similar, so the assembly average for large numbers of normal eyes can be a standard AIM curve, which is helpful for the diagnosis of diseases in the retina system.展开更多

Three groups of patients, each one including 8 eyes of patients with 16 RK incisions. The first group includes eyes with the first cataract incision superiorly, the second group in the temporal area, the third group in temporal area and a precautionary stabilizing suture across the RK incision adjacent to the main tunnel. In the first group intraoperative dehiscence occurred in three eyes(37.5%): it required immediate application of a suture. In the second group dehiscence occurred intraoperatively in two radial scars(20%): it required immediate application of a suture. In the third group, no intraoperative dehiscences were observed. The stabilizing suture of the RK incision works safer, with a lower risk of dehiscences and less postoperative astigmatism.展开更多
We propose a new method for determining neural contrast sensitivity functions (NCSFs) of isolated color mechanisms based on the measurements of wave-front aberrations and isoluminant color contrast sensitivity funct...We propose a new method for determining neural contrast sensitivity functions (NCSFs) of isolated color mechanisms based on the measurements of wave-front aberrations and isoluminant color contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs). Compared with the traditional method, this technique avoids the coherent noise and speckle noise, which are brought by the interference of laser beams, and has great flexibility for the measurements of NCSF of different color mechanisms. Our experiments indicate that the mean NCSF and CSF of the red mechanism are higher than those of the green mechanism, respectively, while those of the blue mechanism are the lowest. However the relative heights of the peak of NCSF and CSF between red and green mechanisms vary in subjects. There are some individuals whose peak values of NCSF and/or CSF of green mechanism are higher than that of the red mechanism. The NCSFs and CSFs of isolated color mechanisms all exhibit the similar characteristics and variation tendency. With the statistical average, the NCSFs of the red, green and blue mechanisms are higher than the corresponding CSFs in the whole spatial frequency. Compared with the corresponding CSFs curves, the peaks of the NCSFs of isolated color mechanisms shift toward higher spatial frequencies, especially for that of blue mechanism which has a largest shift of 3.9 c/deg.展开更多
Objective This study aimed to determine whether lipopolysaccharide(LPS)induces the loss of corneal nerve fibers in cultured trigeminal ganglion(TG)cells,and the underlying mechanism of LPS-induced TG neurite damage.Me...Objective This study aimed to determine whether lipopolysaccharide(LPS)induces the loss of corneal nerve fibers in cultured trigeminal ganglion(TG)cells,and the underlying mechanism of LPS-induced TG neurite damage.Methods TG neurons were isolated from C57BL/6 mice,and the cell viability and purity were maintained for up to 7 days.Then,they were treated with LPS(1µg/mL)or the autophagy regulator(autophibib and rapamycin)alone or in combination for 48 h,and the length of neurites in TG cells was examined by the immunofluorescence staining of the neuron-specific proteinβ3-tubulin.Afterwards,the molecular mechanisms by which LPS induces TG neuron damage were explored.Results The immunofluorescence staining revealed that the average length of neurites in TG cells significantly decreased after LPS treatment.Importantly,LPS induced the impairment of autophagic flux in TG cells,which was evidenced by the increase in the accumulation of LC3 and p62 proteins.The pharmacological inhibition of autophagy by autophinib dramatically reduced the length of TG neurites.However,the rapamycin-induced activation of autophagy significantly lessened the effect of LPS on the degeneration of TG neurites.Conclusion LPS-induced autophagy inhibition contributes to the loss of TG neurites.展开更多

Before and after LASIK, the ap...Changes of corneal properties induced by laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) results in low inaccurate intraocular pressure (IOP) readings by Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT). Before and after LASIK, the applied value of IOP, measured by dynamic contour tonometry (DCT) in comparison to GAT, was evaluated. Before and 1, 4 weeks after LASIK, the IOP in 30 cases (60 eyes) was measured by GAT and DCT respectively. The obtained results were statistically processed by SPSSll. 5 statistical software. The results showed that central corneal thickness (CCT) could affect GAT measurements but not DCT measurements. The comparison of IOP one and 4 weeks after LASIK revealed that the readings from GAT was separately decreased by 5.00±1.12 and 5.45±1.13 mmHg as compared with those before LASIK, while those from DCT had no significant difference. It was concluded that LASIK-induced changes of CCT could influence the accuracy of GAT measurements, but had no influence on those from DCT. DCT was more beneficial to the measurements of IOP in normal eyes and those subject to LASIK surgery.展开更多

·AIM:To investigate the histological characteristics and ultrastructure of recurrent Chinese R124 L mutated corneal dystrophy after keratoplasty.·METHODS:The subjects were enrolled from a Chinese family of c...·AIM:To investigate the histological characteristics and ultrastructure of recurrent Chinese R124 L mutated corneal dystrophy after keratoplasty.·METHODS:The subjects were enrolled from a Chinese family of corneal dystrophy with R124 L heterozygous gene mutation and with a history of consanguineous marriage.Normal corneal samples were used as controls.·RESULTS:In this family,2 patients(3 eyes)underwent penetrating keratoplasty(PKP)and 2 patients(4 eyes)underwent lamellar keratoplasty(LKP).They had recurrence at 33.5±3.0(range 30-36)mo after keratoplasty.Among them,1 patient(1 eye)underwent PKP again and 1 patient(2 eyes)underwent LKP again.In the R124 L mutated recurrent corneal dystrophy,the corneal turbidity was mainly distributed from the upper corneal cortex to the anterior stroma;the corneal epithelium surface was rougher and more uneven;and,the corneal erosions were larger.Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that the thickness of the corneal epithelium was uneven;the arrangement of the epithelial cells was disordered;and,some corneal epithelial cells were swollen.The results of Congo red staining,Masson’s trichrome staining and Periodic acid-Schiff staining were positive,while that of Alcian blue staining was negative.Under a transmission electron microscope,deposition of high electron density substances between epithelial and basal cells,and,apoptosis of basal cells were observed.Many high electron density depositions were observed in the sub-epithelial and anterior corneal matrix.·CONCLUSION:In the Chinese family of recurrent corneal dystrophy with R124 L gene mutation,the corneal epithelia of the recurrent cases are rougher,and the corneal depositions are extra cellular amyloid fibrin.展开更多
Currently,generalized therapy for traumatic optic neuropathy(TON)is lacking.Various strategies have been developed to protect and regenerate retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)after TON.Intravitreal injection of supplements ...Currently,generalized therapy for traumatic optic neuropathy(TON)is lacking.Various strategies have been developed to protect and regenerate retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)after TON.Intravitreal injection of supplements has been approved as a promising approach,although serious concerns,such as low delivery efficacy and pain due to frequent injections,remain.In this study,we tested an injectable thermosensitive hydrogel drug delivery system engineered to deliver ciliary neurotrophic factor(CNTF)and triamcinolone acetonide(TA).The results of rheological studies showed that the prepared drug-loaded hydrogel possessed a suitable mechanical modulus of�300 Pa,consistent with that of vitreum.The hydrogel exhibited thermosensitive with sustained drug release performance.In vitro co-culture of the CNTF-loaded hydrogel system with primary RGCs also induced significant axon regeneration,with 38.5%increase in neurite length,indicating the regenerative response of the thermosensitive hydrogel drug delivery system.A Sprague-Dawley rat optic nerve crush model was constructed and applied to determine the neuroprotective and regenerative capacities of the system.The results demonstrated that a single intravitreal injection of the drugloaded hydrogel(PLGA-PEG-PLGAþTA or PLGA-PEG-PLGAþCNTF)significantly increased RGC survival at both 14 and 28 days.The RGC survival rate was 31.05±1.41%for the drug-loaded hydrogel system(the control group was 16.79±1.50%)at Day 28.These findings suggest that the injectable drug-loaded thermosensitive hydrogel delivery system is a promising therapeutic tool for treating optic nerve degeneration.展开更多

This study was to investigate the effects of ph...Background The recent studies have shown that visual performance might be affected by the ocular aberration after the corneal refractive surgery, and try to minimize it. This study was to investigate the effects of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) on the higher order of wavefront aberration and analysis of their characteristics. Method This prospective study involved 32 eyes with similar refractive powers (-5.0 D to -6.0 D preoperatively). LASIK and PRK were performed with the same parameters of 6 mm diameter optical zone and 7 mm diameter transition zone ablation. Wavefront aberrations were tested using a ray tracing technique preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Three measurements were obtained for each condition; the root mean squared wavefront error (RMS), values for overall wavefront aberrations and each order of the Zernike aberrations were analyzed using the Matlab software. The 2-tailed t test was used for statistical analysis. Results Overall higher order aberrations were increased from (0.55±0.26) pm preoperatively to (0.93±0.37) pm for PRK and (0.79±0.38) pm for LASlK postoperatively. This was a 1.69 fold increase in the PRK group (t=3.95, P〈0.001) and a 1.43 fold increase in the LASIK group (t=2.60, P〈0.05). At 3 months, the mean RMS value for higher-order (3rd to 6th) were significantly increased compared with the corresponding preoperative values (P〈0.05). The fourth order aberrations, spherical like aberration, were dominant by a 2.64 fold in PRK and a 2.31 fold in LASIK. Different influences of the PRK group and LASIK group were shown in the various zernike components. The statistically significant differences were seen in C4^0. C4^4. C5^3,C5^3. C5^5 and C6^2 of the PRK group and C3^-3, C4^0, C5^-5, C5^5, C6^-2 of the LASIK group, which represents a 7.42, 3.58, 9.21,2.72 and 5.3 ford increases in PRK group, and 6.40, 10.80, 11.06, 3.47 and 6.09 fold increases in LASIK group, respectively. C3^3 in LASIK was higher and C5^+1 and C5^+3 were lower than those in the PRK group. C4^0 (spherical aberration) values were similar between PRK and LASIK, however, C3^-1 and C3^1 (coma) in LASIK were higher than those in PRK, but these differences are of no statistical significance. Conclusions PRK and LASIK may increase ocular higher-order aberrations, but they both have their own features. The difference between the two types of surgery may be correlated with the change of the corneal shape, the conversion of biodynamics, the healing of the corneal cut, and re-structured corneal epithelium and/or the stroma.展开更多

Compared with the corresponding CSFs curves, the peaks of the NCSFs of isolated color mechanisms shift toward higher spatial frequencies, especially for that of blue mechanism which has a largest shift of 3.9 c/deg.

文摘Objective This study aimed to determine whether lipopolysaccharide(LPS)induces the loss of corneal nerve fibers in cultured trigeminal ganglion(TG)cells,and the underlying mechanism of LPS-induced TG neurite damage.Methods TG neurons were isolated from C57BL/6 mice,and the cell viability and purity were maintained for up to 7 days.Then,they were treated with LPS(1µg/mL)or the autophagy regulator(autophibib and rapamycin)alone or in combination for 48 h,and the length of neurites in TG cells was examined by the immunofluorescence staining of the neuron-specific proteinβ3-tubulin.Afterwards,the molecular mechanisms by which LPS induces TG neuron damage were explored.Results The immunofluorescence staining revealed that the average length of neurites in TG cells significantly decreased after LPS treatment.Importantly,LPS induced the impairment of autophagic flux in TG cells,which was evidenced by the increase in the accumulation of LC3 and p62 proteins.The pharmacological inhibition of autophagy by autophinib dramatically reduced the length of TG neurites.However,the rapamycin-induced activation of autophagy significantly lessened the effect of LPS on the degeneration of TG neurites.Conclusion LPS-induced autophagy inhibition contributes to the loss of TG neurites.
文摘Changes of corneal properties induced by laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) results in low inaccurate intraocular pressure (IOP) readings by Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT). Before and after LASIK, the applied value of IOP, measured by dynamic contour tonometry (DCT) in comparison to GAT, was evaluated. Before and 1, 4 weeks after LASIK, the IOP in 30 cases (60 eyes) was measured by GAT and DCT respectively. The obtained results were statistically processed by SPSSll. 5 statistical software. The results showed that central corneal thickness (CCT) could affect GAT measurements but not DCT measurements. The comparison of IOP one and 4 weeks after LASIK revealed that the readings from GAT was separately decreased by 5.00±1.12 and 5.45±1.13 mmHg as compared with those before LASIK, while those from DCT had no significant difference. It was concluded that LASIK-induced changes of CCT could influence the accuracy of GAT measurements, but had no influence on those from DCT. DCT was more beneficial to the measurements of IOP in normal eyes and those subject to LASIK surgery.

文摘·AIM:To investigate the histological characteristics and ultrastructure of recurrent Chinese R124 L mutated corneal dystrophy after keratoplasty.·METHODS:The subjects were enrolled from a Chinese family of corneal dystrophy with R124 L heterozygous gene mutation and with a history of consanguineous marriage.Normal corneal samples were used as controls.·RESULTS:In this family,2 patients(3 eyes)underwent penetrating keratoplasty(PKP)and 2 patients(4 eyes)underwent lamellar keratoplasty(LKP).They had recurrence at 33.5±3.0(range 30-36)mo after keratoplasty.Among them,1 patient(1 eye)underwent PKP again and 1 patient(2 eyes)underwent LKP again.In the R124 L mutated recurrent corneal dystrophy,the corneal turbidity was mainly distributed from the upper corneal cortex to the anterior stroma;the corneal epithelium surface was rougher and more uneven;and,the corneal erosions were larger.Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that the thickness of the corneal epithelium was uneven;the arrangement of the epithelial cells was disordered;and,some corneal epithelial cells were swollen.The results of Congo red staining,Masson’s trichrome staining and Periodic acid-Schiff staining were positive,while that of Alcian blue staining was negative.Under a transmission electron microscope,deposition of high electron density substances between epithelial and basal cells,and,apoptosis of basal cells were observed.Many high electron density depositions were observed in the sub-epithelial and anterior corneal matrix.·CONCLUSION:In the Chinese family of recurrent corneal dystrophy with R124 L gene mutation,the corneal epithelia of the recurrent cases are rougher,and the corneal depositions are extra cellular amyloid fibrin.

文摘Currently,generalized therapy for traumatic optic neuropathy(TON)is lacking.Various strategies have been developed to protect and regenerate retinal ganglion cells(RGCs)after TON.Intravitreal injection of supplements has been approved as a promising approach,although serious concerns,such as low delivery efficacy and pain due to frequent injections,remain.In this study,we tested an injectable thermosensitive hydrogel drug delivery system engineered to deliver ciliary neurotrophic factor(CNTF)and triamcinolone acetonide(TA).The results of rheological studies showed that the prepared drug-loaded hydrogel possessed a suitable mechanical modulus of�300 Pa,consistent with that of vitreum.The hydrogel exhibited thermosensitive with sustained drug release performance.In vitro co-culture of the CNTF-loaded hydrogel system with primary RGCs also induced significant axon regeneration,with 38.5%increase in neurite length,indicating the regenerative response of the thermosensitive hydrogel drug delivery system.A Sprague-Dawley rat optic nerve crush model was constructed and applied to determine the neuroprotective and regenerative capacities of the system.The results demonstrated that a single intravitreal injection of the drugloaded hydrogel(PLGA-PEG-PLGAþTA or PLGA-PEG-PLGAþCNTF)significantly increased RGC survival at both 14 and 28 days.The RGC survival rate was 31.05±1.41%for the drug-loaded hydrogel system(the control group was 16.79±1.50%)at Day 28.These findings suggest that the injectable drug-loaded thermosensitive hydrogel delivery system is a promising therapeutic tool for treating optic nerve degeneration.

文摘Background The recent studies have shown that visual performance might be affected by the ocular aberration after the corneal refractive surgery, and try to minimize it. This study was to investigate the effects of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) on the higher order of wavefront aberration and analysis of their characteristics. Method This prospective study involved 32 eyes with similar refractive powers (-5.0 D to -6.0 D preoperatively). LASIK and PRK were performed with the same parameters of 6 mm diameter optical zone and 7 mm diameter transition zone ablation. Wavefront aberrations were tested using a ray tracing technique preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Three measurements were obtained for each condition; the root mean squared wavefront error (RMS), values for overall wavefront aberrations and each order of the Zernike aberrations were analyzed using the Matlab software. The 2-tailed t test was used for statistical analysis. Results Overall higher order aberrations were increased from (0.55±0.26) pm preoperatively to (0.93±0.37) pm for PRK and (0.79±0.38) pm for LASlK postoperatively. This was a 1.69 fold increase in the PRK group (t=3.95, P〈0.001) and a 1.43 fold increase in the LASIK group (t=2.60, P〈0.05). At 3 months, the mean RMS value for higher-order (3rd to 6th) were significantly increased compared with the corresponding preoperative values (P〈0.05). The fourth order aberrations, spherical like aberration, were dominant by a 2.64 fold in PRK and a 2.31 fold in LASIK. Different influences of the PRK group and LASIK group were shown in the various zernike components. The statistically significant differences were seen in C4^0. C4^4. C5^3,C5^3. C5^5 and C6^2 of the PRK group and C3^-3, C4^0, C5^-5, C5^5, C6^-2 of the LASIK group, which represents a 7.42, 3.58, 9.21,2.72 and 5.3 ford increases in PRK group, and 6.40, 10.80, 11.06, 3.47 and 6.09 fold increases in LASIK group, respectively. C3^3 in LASIK was higher and C5^+1 and C5^+3 were lower than those in the PRK group. C4^0 (spherical aberration) values were similar between PRK and LASIK, however, C3^-1 and C3^1 (coma) in LASIK were higher than those in PRK, but these differences are of no statistical significance. Conclusions PRK and LASIK may increase ocular higher-order aberrations, but they both have their own features. The difference between the two types of surgery may be correlated with the change of the corneal shape, the conversion of biodynamics, the healing of the corneal cut, and re-structured corneal epithelium and/or the stroma.
