Individuals with UCLP;32 clefts were on the left side and 18 clefts were on the right side. Permanent third molar teeth deficiency was excluded from the study. Results: In 50 individuals with UCLP;35 (70%) upper lateral incisors were congenitally deficient in the cleft area, while 15 (30%) missing lateral teeth were found in the non-cleft side. In control group, 12 (24%) of 50 patients had congenital lateral incisor deficiency. Congenital deficiency of upper lateral incisor in UCLP;the cleft area was higher than the non-cleft side (p < 0.01). The difference was statistically important when compared with the control group (p < 0.001). In 50 individuals with UCLP;while 27 (54%) of second premolar teeth were congenitally deficient in cleft side, 23 (46%) were missing in non-cleft side. In control group, 18 (36%) congenital second premolar deficiency was detected. However, second premolar congenital deficiency was higher in UCLP group when compared to control group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The deficiency of the lateral incisors in the cleft side is more often congenitally deficient than upper second premolar teeth and this should be considered in the treatment planning from an early age. 展开更多

Aim: Maxillary dental arch widths were evaluated in individuals having unilateral (UCLP) and bilateral (BCLP) cleft lip and palate (CLP) using three-dimensional (3D) digital models. Material and Method: The study had been conducted on 80 individuals aged between 14 - 17 years having UCLP and BCLP. 40 of the individuals had UCLP, whereas 40 had BCLP. The maxillary dental models taken from patients before the treatment were scanned using Orthomodel Programme (v.1.01, Orthomodel Inc., Istanbul, Turkey) to obtain 3D imagery. Student’s t-test was used in order to assess the data obtained by using SPSS software version 22.0. Results: In BCLP, the average inter-canine distance was 17.44 ± 1.31 mm, the average inter-molar distance was 36.57 ± 1.12 mm, while inter-canine/inter-molar ratio was 0.47. Whereas in UCLP, it was 25.10 ± 0.63 mm, 42.20 ± 0.53 mm and 0.59. The inter-canine distance in UCLP was found to be large enough to be statistically significant (p 0.05), even though there were differences in inter-molar widths. Conclusion: For the stable orthodontic treatment results, one of the most important points is arch form and widths to be coherent with each other. In our study, the increase of inter-canine distance seen in UCLP indicates that in the cleft region, the maxillary arch is inclined over to the back, while the same situation in BCLP suggests that the maxillary segments are collapsed inside. The difference in the arch is highly affected by the primary surgical treatment. 展开更多

The purpose of this article is to propose the idea of "a partial stability constant" for the complex formation of polyamine polyacetic acids with tripositive rare earth ion. Each coordinating group has its own characteristic stability constant,i.e.,"the partial stability constant" and simple numerical addition can be used among the partial logarithm of the stability constant(PLSC), for explanation of the total stability constants. The structures of the rare earth-diethylenetriamine-N,N,N',N',N"-pentaacetic acid(DTPA)complexes in aqueous solution has been discussed from the point of PLSC. 展开更多

Background: In the treatment of infantile and accommodative esotopia medial rectus (MR) recession combined posterior fixation suture (Faden operation) can be used. But, there is very limited literature on effect of ocular parameters (axial length, medial rectus width and the distance of medial rectus insertion to limbus) to this operation. Objective: To evaluate effects of ocular parameters on medial rectus Faden operations with recession for esotropia. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, 38 patients (57 eyes) who underwent Faden operation with unilateral or bilateral recession (4 - 4.5 mm) on medial rectus were divided into three groups according to axial length, medial rectus width and the distance of medial rectus insertion to limbus. Preoperative and postoperative deviations compared. Results: 11 cases were infantile esotropia, 46 cases were acquired esotropia. Female/male rate was 19/19. The mean preoperative amount of esotropia at near was 49.95 ± 17.36 prism diopters (PD) and postoperative 1 week 11.77 ± 11.14 PD, 1 month 12.02 ± 11.52 PD and 6 months 9.46 ± 10.19 PD. The mean preoperative amount of esotropia at distance was 38.84 ± 19.03 PD and postoperative 1 week 7.25 ± 11.29 PD, 1 month 6.54 ± 10.52 PD and 6 months 4.40 ± 9.08 PD. Due to axial length, in shorter eyes, the decrease in mean post-operative deviation was statistically significant. Due to medial rectus width and the distance of medial rectus insertion, there was no statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Axial length has an effect on medial rectus Faden operations with recession but medial rectus width and medial rectus insertion distance from limbus do not. 展开更多

Based on individual capabilities, visual perception has its disadvantages. The aim of this study was to find out the possible shade difference between the upper and lower teeth, visual perception versus spectrophotometry as well as proving that females are better in visual perception of colour matching. 82 subjects (dental students) of this study determined the color of each other’s natural teeth. The color of 1640 teeth (incisors, canines and premolars), was matched by visual perception and by Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer. The matching was focused on the middle third of buccal surfaces of the examined teeth. In this study, it was found that there was a difference of color between the teeth of the upper and lower jaw. The percentage of the accordance between two methods was 28.35% for all examined teeth. The color determination at central incisors showed the highest value of accordance 40.85%. Based on Vitapan 3D Mastershade, the most frequent color was 2M2. 展开更多

The aim of the present study was the in vitro and in vivo analysis of a bi-layered 3D-printed scaffold combining a PLA layer and a biphasic PLA/bioglass G5 layer for regeneration of osteochondral defects in vivo Focus of the in vitro analysis was on the(molecular)weight loss and the morphological and mechanical variations after immersion in SBF.The in vivo study focused on analysis of the tissue reactions and differences in the implant bed vascularization using an established subcutaneous implantation model in CD-1 mice and established histological and histomorphometrical methods. Both scaffold parts kept their structural integrity, while changes in morphology were observed, especially for the PLA/G5 scaffold.Mechanical properties decreased with progressive degradation, while the PLA/G5 scaffolds presented higher compressive modulus than PLA scaffolds. The tissue reaction to PLA included low numbers of BMGCs and minimal vascularization of its implant beds, while the addition of G5 lead to higher numbers of BMGCs and a higher implant bed vascularization.Analysis revealed that the use of a bi-layered scaffold shows the ability to observe distinct in vivo response despite the physical proximity of PLA and PLA/G5 layers.Altogether, the results showed that the addition of G5 enables to reduce scaffold weight loss and to increase mechanical strength.Furthermore, the addition of G5 lead to a higher vascularization of the implant bed required as basis for bone tissue regeneration mediated by higher numbers of BMGCs,while within the PLA parts a significantly lower vascularization was found optimally for chondral regeneration. Thus, this data show that the analyzed bi-layered scaffold may serve as an ideal basis for the regeneration of osteochondral tissue defects.Additionally, the results show that it might be able to reduce the number of experimental animals required as it may be possible to analyze the tissue response to more than one implant in one experimental animal. 展开更多

To succeed,a scientist must write well.Substantial guidance exists on writing papers that follow the classic Introduction,Methods,Results, and Discussion(IMRaD)structure. Here,we fill a critical gap in this pedagogical canon. We offer guidance on developing a good scientific story. This valuable—yet often poorly achieved—skill can increase the impact of a study and its likelihood of acceptance.A scientific story goes beyond presenting information. It is a cohesive narrative that engages the reader by presenting and solving a problem, with a beginning, middle, and end.To create this narrative structure,we urge writers to consider starting at the end of their study, starting with writing their main conclusions, which provide the basis of the Discussion, and then work backwards:Results→Methods→refine the Discussion→Introduction→Abstract→Title. In this brief and informal editorial,we offer guidance to a wide audience, ranging from upper-level undergraduates(who have just conducted their first research project)to senior scientists(who may benefit from re-thinking their approach to writing). To do so,we provide specific instruction, examples, and a guide to the literature on how to“write backwards”,linking scientific storytelling to the IMRaD structure. 展开更多
