According to the simulation results, the bimolecular termination rate constant sharply drops throughout the polymerization when either chain-length dependency of termination rate constant, gel effect, or both together is applied to the simulation. In addition, as expected, the initiator is quickly decomposed at the early stages of the polymerization. The concentration of the catalyst in lower oxidation state decreases at first and then plateaus at higher conversion; furthermore, the steady concentration of Ml^nY/L in the polymerization is the highest when the chain-lengthdependent diffusion-controlled termination rate constant is employed in the simulation. The rates of deactivation and chain end degradation reactions are also smaller in this case. Therefore, the fraction of dormant chains is higher throughout the reaction and consequently the portion of dead polymers decreases. Besides, molecular weight increases linearly with conversion; however, when neither gel effect nor chain-length dependency of termination rate constant is considered, the molecular weight deviates from linearity at the end of the reaction. The peak of chain length distribution shifts toward higher molecular weight too during the reaction. Finally, the molecular weight distribution broadens at higher conversion; however, the chain length distribution of polymers produced under conditions of applying chain-length-dependent diffusion-controlled termination rate constant is narrower.展开更多

To investigate the influences of reaction parameters, namely Al/Ti molar ratio, hydrogen and processing parameters, i.e. ethylene pressure and temperature, a Taguchi experimental design was worked out. An L27 orthogonal array was chosen to take the above-mentioned parameters and relevant interactions into account. Response surface method was the tool used to analyze the experimental design results. Al/Ti, ethylene pressure and temperature were selected as experimental design factors, and catalyst activity and polymerization yield were the response parameters. Increasing pressure, due to an increment in monomer accessibility, and rising Al/Ti, because of higher reduction in the catalysts, cause an increase in both polymerization yield and catalyst activity. Nonetheless, a higher temperature, thanks to reducing ethylene solubility in the slurry medium and partially catalyst destruction, lead to a reduction in both response parameters. A synergistic effect was also observed between temperature and pressure. All catalyst activities will reduce in the presence of hydrogen. Molecular weight also shows a decline in the presence of hydrogen as a transfer agent. However, the polydispersity index remains approximately intact. Using SEM, various morphologies, owing to different catalyst morphologies, were seen for the polyethylene.展开更多

We report a new method on studying surface relaxation behaviors of polymer thin films on a solid substrate. This method involved utilizing a rubbed polyimide surface with a pretilting angle in a liquid crystalline cell. Due to the surface alignment, the liquid crystals were aligned along the rubbing direction. During heating the liquid crystalline cell, we continuously monitored the change of orientation of the liquid crystals. It is understood that at a temperature where the orientation of liquid crystal is lost, the surface relaxation on the glass substrate takes place to lose the polyimide surface orientation. It was found that the relaxation temperature at which the liquid crystals lose their orientation depends on the film thickness of the polyimide. A quantitative linear relationship between the relaxation temperature and reciprocal of the film thickness can be observed. Furthermore, different topologies of the rubbed and relaxed thin films were amplified using the polyethylene decoration method and observed using atomic force microscopy.展开更多

Several samples were prepared from a cast alloy and homogenized at 1300°C for different times, with a maximum of 24 h. A microstructural study of the cast alloy using wavelength-dispersive spectroscopic analysis revealed that elements such as Al, Ti, and Ni segregated mostly within interdendritic regions, whereas W atoms were segregated within dendrite cores. With an increase in homogenization time, segregation decreased and the initial dendritic structure was eliminated. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the γ′ phases in the cores and interdendritic regions of the as-cast alloy were 392 and 124 nm, respectively. The size difference of γ′ was found to be due to the different segregation behaviors of constituent elements during solidification. After homogenization, particularly after 16 h, segregation decreased; thus, the size, chemical composition, and hardness of the precipitated γ′ phase was mostly uniform throughout the samples.展开更多

The first step represents end capping of N6 in the presence of adipic acid leading to carboxy terminated N6, and the second one is polycondensation of the latter product with PEO in the presence of catalyst and thermostabilizer to form a high molecular weight multi-block copolymer. Several methods were applied to characterize the synthesized copolyrner such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The obtained results confirmed the multi-block structure for copolymer with a very high degree of micro-phase separation. Atomic force microscopy micrographs indicated that the morphology was the dispersion of high stiffness nanostructured polyamide (PA) domains in the amorphous region of PEO matrix, which can be very important in their performance for membrane processes.展开更多

In this work, the polyurethane (PU) binder containing DOP plasticizer was used as a polymeric matrix and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was applied as inhibitor agent to prevent plasticizer migration from the PU matrix into the ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) substrate. To increase the compatibility of β-CD and PU matrix, a derivative of β-CD has been synthesized using toluene diisocyanate (β-CD-TDI). The synthesized derivative was characterized by MALDI-MS and FTIR-ATR analyses. FTIR-ATR results confirmed the formation of bonding between β-CD and the polymeric network while the MALDIMS results showed that the synthesized derivative contained two β-CD and 7 TDI molecules bonded to β-CD. Investigation of the mechanical properties of PU modified by β-CD-TDI showed a decrease in tensile strength and an increase in elongation at break with increasing β-CD-TDI content. DMTA results showed a decrement in crosslinking density by increasing the β-CD-TDI content. Also, to investigate plasticizer migration, extraction of the DOP plasticizer from samples was performed using dichloromethane solvent and its concentration was measured by gas chromatography. The results of migration evaluation after four months showed that using β-CD as an inhibitor agent in the PU binder could prevent the migration of plasticizer to EPDM substrate.展开更多
