Background:Depression is a growing public health concern among Chinese children and adolescents, with substantial healthcare costs.Physical activity(PA)and organized sport are modifiable behaviours protective against depression. This study, therefore, estimated the healthcare costs of depression attributable to insufficient PA and organized sport participation. Methods:A cost-of-illness approach with population attributable fraction(PAF)was applied.Relative risks were derived from longitudinal evidence, prevalence estimates from national Chinese surveys, and depression case numbers from the Global Burden of Disease 2021.Direct healthcare costs were extrapolated from European Union estimates, adjusted to 2024 US dollars(USD),and Chinese expenditure.Sex-stratified analyses were conducted. Results:Estimated depression-related healthcare costs attributable to insufficient PA were approximately 81 million USD,compared with around 84 million USD attributable to insufficient organized sport participation. At the population level, the economic burden attributable to insufficient PA and organized sport was of a similar order of magnitude.Among boys, costs attributable to insufficient organized sport participation(approximately 57 million USD)exceeded those attributable to insufficient PA(around 39 million USD),whereas among girls, costs attributable to insufficient PA(approximately 42 million USD)were higher than those related to organized sport(around 27 million USD).These sex-specific patterns were consistent across sensitivity analyses examining uncertainty in key model parameters. Conclusions:Both insufficient PA and organized sport contribute substantially to depression-related healthcare costs, with sex-specific differences.Policies should prioritise promoting overall PA in girls and organized sport in boys to reduce depression burden and associated expenditures. The magnitude of these attributable costs indicates an economically meaningful burden that is potentially modifiable through behavioural interventions. 展开更多

Background:Social media plays an important role in shaping body image and self-perception,particularly among appearance-sensitive groups such as athletes.Although problematic social media use has been linked to body image outcomes through processes such as social comparison,self-presentation,and evaluation sensitivity, these mechanisms remain underexplored among athletes with physical disabilities. This study aimed to examine the associations between social media use, addictive use patterns, and body image perception in this population, with a focus on these underlying psychological mechanisms. Methods:A total of 165 athletes with physical disability participated in this quantitative cross-sectional study.Data were collected through online surveys, including demographic questions, the Athlete Social Media Use Scale(content creation, usage frequency, and social media addiction subdimensions),and the Body Image Scale(negative perception, evaluation sensitivity, positive perception, and body modification).Parametric tests, correlation analyses, and group comparisons were performed to assess relationships between social media behaviors and body image dimensions. Results:Problematic social media use was moderately associated with higher negative body image and lower positive body image among athletes with physical disabilities(r=0.32–0.41,all p<0.001).Regression analysis indicated that overall social media use was a significant predictor of body image perception after controlling for demographic variables(β≈0.45,p<0.001),explaining approximately 19.5%of the variance.Mediation analyses using bootstrapping revealed that these psychological mechanisms partially mediated the relationship between problematic social media use and body image perceptions, with small-to-moderate indirect effects, indicating both statistical and practical significance. Conclusion:The findings indicate that not only general social media use but also addictive and problematic usage patterns are linked to vulnerable aspects of body image among athletes with physical disabilities.Increased exposure to idealized digital representations and upward social comparison processes may heighten sensitivity to external evaluation and undermine positive body perception. These results highlight the need for digital literacy initiatives, psychoeducational interventions, and supportive online environments that promote healthier social media engagement and body image among disabled athletes. 展开更多

Most small bodies in the solar system have low orbital inclinations, concentrated near the ecliptic plane. However, some small bodies exhibit high orbital inclinations(i>20°)and are referred to as high-inclination small bodies. The discovery and study of these high-inclination objects are reshaping traditional understanding and challenging classical dynamical models. With the advancement of wide-field sky survey projects,an increasing number of small bodies with high-inclination and even retrograde orbits have been observed.Their unique orbital configurations suggest complex formation mechanisms and evolutionary histories.High-inclination small bodies differ significantly from ecliptic plane objects in terms of surface composition, size distribution, and dynamical behavior.Their formation mechanisms involve various pathways, such as gravitational perturbations and planetary scattering, resonance capture and inclination excitation, and the influence of potential Planet Nine. These objects not only serve as"fossil records"of the early evolution of the solar system but also provide new research perspectives for planetary formation theories, interstellar material exchange, and deep-space resource exploration. 展开更多

Background:Health benefits have been reported for many physical activity(PA)interventions for improving fundamental movement skills(FMS)and cognitive function(CF),but the most effective type of PA interventions for emhancing FMS and CF in early childhood remain unknown. Thus, the study aimed to determine the effects of PA interventions in enhancing FMS and CF among young children and to establish the optimal types of PA interventions. Methods:Six electronic databases(PubMed,OVID,SPORTDiscus,Scopus,Web of Science, and Cochrane)were searched for studies from inception to March 17,2024.Randomized controlled trials(RCTs)were included in this study if they reported outcomes related to FMS,CF,or both associated with PA interventions.Effect sizes were calculated and performed as Hedges'g.The hierarchy of competing interventions was established using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve(SUCRA).Risk of bias was independently assessed using the Cochrane Riskof-Bias 2.Results:This analysis included 38 studies with 5237 young children, with sample sizes ranging from 32 to 897 participants. The types of PA interventions analyzed included active play/free play/unstructured PA(AP),general structured PA(GSPA),FMS-targeted PA programs(FMSprograms),cognitively-engaging PA programs(CPA),multilevel PA interventions(MPA),and exergaming.PA interventions had a large, pooled effect size for total FMS(g=0.96;95%CI:0.45-1.46;p<0.01;I^(2)=94%).For CF,a small-to-moderate pooled effect size was found(g=0.39;95%CI:0.18-0.60;p<0.01;I^(2)=88%).PA interventions longer than 3 months showed fewer benefits for FMS(p<0.01).The network meta-analysis showed that FMS-programs(standardized mean difference((SMD)=1.55,95%CI:0.98-2.11,SUCRA=98.3%)and GSPA(SMD=0.94,95%CI:0.05-1.85,SUCRA=69.8%)significantly improved total FMS compared to AP.For locomotor skills(LMS),exergaming ranked highest(SUCRA=79.3%),followed by FMS-programs(75.9%)and GSPA(61.6%).However,despite its top ranking, exergaming's effect estimate was not statistically significant(SMD=1.38,95%CI:-0.08 to 2.85).For object control skills(OCS),exergaming again ranked highest(SUCRA=91.9%)and showed the largest significant effect(SMD=2.38,95%CI:0.96-3.80),followed by FMS-programs(SUCRA=78.5%)and GSPA(SUCRA=53.7%).FMS-programs,GSPA,MPA,and UC also significantly improved OCS compared to AP.While no significant differences were observed across PA interventions for most CF domains, exergaming had a significant positive effect on working memory(SMD=1.41,95%CI:0.07-2.75).The certainty of evidence varied from low to moderate. Conclusion:These findings emphasize the importance of PA interventions in improving FMS and CF in early childhood.FMS-programs and GSPA appear to be the most effective approaches for enhancing total FMS,while exergaming showed the highest ranking for LMS and OCS,with a significant impact on OCS but uncertainty in LMS improvements.Additionally, exergaming had a positive effect on working memory, suggesting its potential cognitive benefits. 展开更多

Overweight and obesity are significant public health concerns worldwide due to their association with many chronic health conditions. This has resulted in the development of various interventions focused on weight loss to reduce the associated health burden.Physical activity is an important lifestyle behavior associated with enhanced health.Evidence supports that many of the benefits of physical activity are realized independent of initial weight status or whether weight loss is achieved, with some benefits additive to what is achieved with weight loss alone. These benefits include enhanced cardiometabolic, brain, cognitive and psychological health, and others. Moreover,in adults with overweight or obesity, physical activity has independent effects on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, physical function, and mobility. There are also benefits to body composition, with physical activity improving the quality of key tissues, such as skeletal muscle, which may not occur with diet-induced weight loss. Therefore, physical activity is an important public health target for adults with overweight or obesity to provide a wide range of health benefits that extend beyond those of weight loss alone. However, physical activity recommendations and programming efforts should consider the unique characteristics of adults with overweight or obesity to be most effective, and should support a focus on mobility, physical function, and other health outcomes. 展开更多

Energy expenditure estimation can be used to measure the exercise load and physical condition of different individuals, such as soldiers, athletes, firemen, etc., during their training and work. Energy expenditure estimation methods based on computer vision have rapidly developed in recent years. Compared with sensor-based methods, such methods are capable of monitoring several target persons at the same time, and the subjects do not need to wear different sensor devices that hamper their movement. In this paper, we propose a cross-attention spatial–temporal convolutional neural network to predict the energy expenditure of people under different exercise intensities. The model explores the relationship between changes in the human skeleton and energy expenditure intensity. In addition, a cross-attention correction module is used to reduce the negative effects of individual physical fitness characteristics during energy expenditure estimation. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieves high accuracy for energy expenditure estimation and performs better than existing computer vision-based energy expenditure estimation methods do. The proposed method can be widely used in various physical activity scenarios to measure energy expenditure, increasing the convenience of usage. 展开更多

Measuring cross sections of nuclear reactions, such as the so-called“Holy Grail”reaction,^(12)C(σ,γ)^(16)O,is essential for understanding stellar nucleosynthesis but presents significant challenges due to extremely low cross sections.Key challenges include significant energy loss as ions penetrate the target material, limiting measurements to thin target layers. To overcome these obstacles,we propose a novel method, the in-target energy loss compensating(eLOC)method, specifically designed for gas targets, which utilizes a gas-filled magnetic field and accelerating electric fields to compensate for ion energy loss in the target.Simulations show that this approach significantly enhances the effective target thickness by over 140 times in the case of the“Holy Grail”reaction with an inverse-kinematics setup. This eLOC method may provide a powerful new tool for obtaining critical data in nuclear astrophysics, thereby advancing our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and the origins of elements in the universe,as well as benefiting other related fields such as isotope production. 展开更多

Background:Investigators from low-,middle-,and high-income countries representing 6 continents contributed to the development of the Global Adolescent and Child Physical Activity Questionnaire(GAC-PAQ).The GAC-PAQ is designed to assess physical activity(PA)across all key domains(i.e.,school,chores,work/volunteering,transport,free time, outdoor time). It aimed to address multiple gaps in global PA surveillance(e.g.,omission of important PA domains, insufficient cultural adaptation, underrepresentation of rural areas in questionnaire validation studies). The purpose of this study was to assess the content validity of the GAC-PAQ among PA experts,8-to 17-year-olds,and one of their parents/guardians,and to discuss changes made to the questionnaire based on participants'feedback.Methods:Sixty-two experts in PA measurement and/or surveillance from 24 countries completed an online survey that included both closed-and open-ended questions about the content validity of the GAC-PAQ.The proportion of experts who agreed or strongly agreed with the items was calculated.Child-parent/guardian dyads from 15 countries(n=250;10-40 per country)participated in a structured cognitive interview to assess the clarity of the questions and response options, and they were encouraged to provide suggestions to improve clarity and facilitate completion of the questionnaire.Participating countries are:Aotearoa New Zealand,Brazil,Canada,China,Colombia,Czech Republic,India,Malawi,Mexico,Nepal,Nigeria,Spain,Sweden,Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.Interviews were conducted in 13 different languages and structured by PA domain.Generic images were included to help participants in answering questions about PA intensity. Results:Expert agreement with the items for each domain exceeded 75%,and their qualitative feedback was used to revise the questionnaire before cognitive interviews. In general, participants found the questionnaire to be comprehensive.Adolescents(12-17 years)found it easier than children(8-11 years)to answer the questions.Several children struggled to answer questions about the duration and intensity of activities and/or concepts related to travel modes, active trips, and organized activities. Many parents/guardians were unsure about the frequency, duration, and intensity of their children's or adolescents'PA at school and/or recommended using more culturally relevant and appropriate images. Some participants misunderstood the concept of activities that“make you stronger”(intended to assess resistance activities)and/or struggled to differentiate between work, volunteering, and chores. Conclusion:Participants'feedback was used to develop a revised, simplified, and culturally adapted GAC-PAQ,which will be pilot-tested in all15 countries in an App that will include country-specific images and narration in local languages.Further research is needed to assess the reliability and validity of the revised GAC-PAQ. 展开更多

Background:Physical fitness is a key indicator of current and future health in children and adolescents.Evidence suggests that fitness levels have declined then stagnated in recent decades, but it remains unclear how the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has impacted this trend. Methods:We conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses to assess pandemic-related changes in physical fitness among children and adolescents(0-19 years)in the World Health Organization European Region.Seven databases were searched up to February 28,2025 for studies reporting validated pre-and during/post-pandemic fitness measurements. Two reviewers independently performed screening, data extraction,risk-of-bias assessment(Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Exposure)(ROBINS-E),and certainty grading(Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development and Evaluation)(GRADE).Random-effects meta-analyses yielded standardized mean differences(SMDs)with 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs).Subgroup analyses examined sex, age, year, and national restriction severity(Oxford Stringency Index).Results:Thirty-two studies comprising 270,179 participants and 1,519,386 fitness measurements from 17 European countries were included.Cardiorespiratory fitness declined significantly during the pandemic, especially in 2021,with reductions in endurance(SMD=-0.43;95%CI:-0.61 to-0.25)and speed(SMD=-0.29;95%CI:-0.61 to 0.03).While speed returned to baseline by 2023,endurance remained below pre-pandemic levels(SMD=-0.10;95%CI:-0.12 to-0.08).Girls and adolescents were disproportionately affected. In contrast to cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness remained largely unchanged.Stricter national regulations were associated with greater declines in cardiorespiratory fitness.Conclusion:COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were associated with a marked decline in cardiorespiratory fitness in European children and adolescents, with levels not recovered by 2023.These findings call for urgent, targeted public health interventions to improve physical fitness and prevent long-term health consequences. 展开更多

Background:Taking actions to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular engagement in physical activity(PA)and reducing sedentary behavior(SB),may protect against the development of internalizing problems among healthy youth. However,it remains unclear whether such associations exist among youth with chronic pain who often report symptoms of depression and anxiety. To this end,we aimed to investigate the associations between independent and combined PA and/or SB patterns with indicators of internalizing problems in this vulnerable population. Methods:Data used in this cross-sectional study were retrieved from the U.S.National Survey of Children’s Health for the years 2021-2022.Specifically,caregiver proxy reports on sociodemgraphic factors and lifestyle behaviors of 4735 U.S.children and adolescents(referring to youth)aged 6-17 years were collected. We examined independent and combined patterns of PA and SB as exposures, with internalizing problems serving as outcomes of interest.Logistic regressions were used to examine the independent and combined associations of PA and/or SB patterns with anxiety and depression symptoms among youth with chronic pain while adjusting for covariates including age, sex, ethnicity, primary caregivers’education level, overweight status, and household federal poverty level. Results:Overall, our results indicated that PA was negatively associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms.Specifically, youth with chronic pain who engaged in at least 60-minute PA for 1-3 days,4-6 days,or every day reported significantly lower likelihood of experiencing symptoms of anxiety(OR=0.71,95%CI:0.60-0.84;OR=0.44,95%CI:0.36-0.53;OR=0.50,95%CI:0.40-0.63,respectively;all p-value<0.001)and depression(OR=0.63,95%CI:0.53-0.75;OR=0.38,95%CI:0.31-0.47;OR=0.46,95%CI:0.36-0.59,respectively;all p-value<0.001)symptoms compared to those with 0 days.Conversely,SB(operationalized via the proxy screen time)was positively associated with anxiety and depression symptoms.Youth with chronic pain who reported 4 or more hours of daily screen time had significantly higher odds of experiencing symptoms of anxiety(OR=2.17,95%CI:1.52-3.09,p<0.001)and depression(OR=2.30,95%CI:1.48-3.59,p<0.001).Furthermore,youth with chronic pain who engaged in higher PA levels and reported lower SB levels had a lower likelihood of experiencing symptoms of anxiety(OR=0.68,95%CI:0.52-0.87,p=0.003)and depression(OR=0.49,95%CI:0.34-0.70,p<0.001)symptoms compared to those with lower PA levels and higher SB levels. Conclusions:Higher PA levels and lower SB levels were associated with a reduced likelihood of developing anxiety and depression symptoms, which are indicative of internalizing problems, among youth with chronic pain.Future public health actions in this vulnerable population should prioritize intervention programs that promote PA engagement to reduce SB levels. 展开更多

Diabetes mellitus(DM)has become one of the most serious and common chronic diseases around the world, leading to various complications and a reduction in life expectancy.Increased sedentary behavior(SB)and decreased physical activity(PA)are important contributors to the rising prevalence of DM.This article reviews the research progress on the pathogenesis of DM,the effects of SB and PA on the risk of DM,aiming to explore the influence of different PA intensities, amounts, frequencies, durations and types on the incidence of DM.Research has shown that blood glucose levels tend to increase with the prolongation of SB.Within a certain range,PA intensity and PA amount are negatively correlated with the risk of DM;Performing PA for more than 3 days per week maintains normal glucose tolerance and lower blood pressure;Engaging in 150–300 min of moderate intensity exercise or 75–150 min of high-intensity exercise per week reduces the risk of DM;PA during leisure time reduces the risk of DM,while PA during work increases the risk of DM;Both aerobic training and resistance training reduce the risk of DM,and the combination of the two training methods produces better benefits;Various types of exercises, such as cycling, soccer, aerobics, yoga, tai chi,all reduce the risk of DM.In summary, prolonged SB increases the risk of DM,while appropriate PA reduces the risk of DM.As the intensity, amount, and frequency of PA increase, the effect of reducing DM risk becomes more significant.Different exercise methods have different effects on reducing DM risk. 展开更多

Background There is a lack of research examining the interplay between objectively measured physical activity volume and intensity with life expectancy. The purpose of the study was to investigate the interplay between objectively measured PA volume and intensity profiles with modeled life expectancy in women and men within the UK Biobank cohort study and interpret findings in relation to brisk walking. Methods Individuals from UK Biobank with wrist-worn accelerometer data were included. The average acceleration and intensity gradient were extracted to describe the physical activity volume and intensity profile.Mortality data were obtained from national registries.Adjusted life expectancies were estimated using parametric flexible survival models. Results 40,953(57.1%)women(median age=61.9 years)and 30,820(42.9%)men(63.1 years)were included.Over a median follow-up of 6.9 years, there were 1719(2.4%)deaths(733 in women;986 in men).At 60 years, life expectancy was progressively longer for higher physical activity volume and intensity profiles, reaching 95.6 years in women and 94.5 years in men at the 90th centile for both volume and intensity, corresponding to 3.4 additional years(95%confidence interval(95%CI):2.4-4.4)in women and 4.6 additional years(95%CI:3.6-5.6)in men compared to those at the 10th centiles. An additional 10-min or 30-min daily brisk walk was associated with 0.9(95%CI:0.5-1.3)and 1.4 years(95%CI:0.9-1.9)longer life expectancy, respectively,in inactive women;and 1.4 years(95%CI:1.0-1.8)and 2.5(95%CI:1.9-3.1)in inactive men. Conclusion Higher physical activity volumes were associated with longer life expectancy, with a higher physical activity intensity profile further adding to a longer life.Adding as little as a 10-min brisk walk to daily activity patterns may result in a meaningful benefit to life expectancy. 展开更多

BACKGROUND While existing literature on ischiofemoral impingement syndrome(IFI)predominantly emphasizes surgical interventions or generalized physical therapy approaches, there remains a paucity of evidence regarding structured, multimodal rehabilitation programs targeting biomechanical deficits in IFI.This case report evaluates the efficacy of a multimodal rehabilitation program addressing a critical gap in conservative management strategies.CASE SUMMARY The patient underwent comprehensive physical and clinical examination, including hip X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging investigations. The patient completed the Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire(MSK-HQ)and numerical pain rating scale(NPRS).The patient underwent a two-month tailored structured physical therapy intervention and repeated the same assessment afterwards. The patient's substantial reduction in pain, reflected by a significant decrease in the patient’s NPRS score from 9 to 3 points, signifies a positive clinical response. This outcome, coupled with the significant improvement in the patient's health-related quality of life according to the MSK-HQ score, which increased from 12 to 48 points, underscores the success of our research.CONCLUSION The study highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and managing IFI,combining clinical assessment with imaging and implementing a multimodal rehabilitation program for optimal outcomes. 展开更多

The mental health of adolescents is a priority for successful development.Physical activity(PA)and exercise can have effects on the mental health of adolescents. This review analysed the effect that physical exercise interventions can have on the mental health of healthy adolescents between 10 and 19 years of age.The search was carried out in four databases.PubMed,Web of Science,Scopus and SportDiscuss, were searched up to December 31,2022,following the general model.Eleven studies were selected, with a total sample of 23681 participants in 2435 studies published in the last 5 years involving healthy adolescents. The search process and review of the articles was performed by independent expert investigators. The risk-of-bias and the methodological quality were analysed using the Cochrane scale. The limited and heterogeneous studies conducted so far do not clearly establish the benefits of PA on adolescents’mental health. However, some PA interventions seem to improve subjective well-being,self-esteem,physical and mental well-being,anxiety,lifestyle,emotional intelligence, depressive mood, and perceived benefit and confidence in healthy adolescents. It is important to design an effective and appropriate physical exercise programme that can be implemented for adolescents to achieve significant effects on their mental health.Studies that did not implement an appropriate exercise program with improvements in adolescent physical fitness showed no changes in psychological variables.Further research is needed to clearly establish that exercise programmes have positive effects on mental health in healthy adolescents. 展开更多

Subjective well-being is a key indicator of quality of life and a crucial factor for successful aging among older adults. However, few studies have explored the subjective well-being among older adults from the perspective of digital literacy. Therefore, this study explores the relationship between digital literacy and subjective well-being using data on 4270 older adults from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)dataset.PROCESS mediation analysis results indicated digital literacy is associated with higher subjective well-being among the older adults.Digital literacy was associated with the frequency of physical exercise and consumption. Moreover,Digital literacy can also enhance the subjective well-being among older adults by increasing the frequency of physical exercise, and consumption, and a chain mediator subjective well-being.These findings align with the theoretical framework of digital health literacy.Theory which posits that health information obtained through digital literacy can help older adults better engage in healthy lifestyles, thereby enhancing their quality of life. These findings hold significant practical implications for enhancing the subjective well-being among older adults and advancing the development of successful aging. 展开更多

HCLS1-associated protein X-1(HAX1)is a multifunctional mitochondrial protein involved in the regulation of apoptosis,a crucial process of programmed cell death, and mRNA processing.Despite its significance, limited structural data is available for HAX1,hindering a comprehensive understanding of its biological function.Notably, the caseinolytic mitochondrial matrix peptidase chaperone subunit B(CLPB)has been identified as an interacting partner of HAX1,yet the biophysical properties and binding affinity governing their interaction remain poorly defined. In this study,we present a thorough biophysical characterization of full-length human HAX1 and CLPB,accomplished through recombinant expression and purification.By employing size exclusion chromatography, dynamic light scattering, and circular dichroism spectroscopy,we successfully established their biophysical properties, revealing contrasting structural features, with CLPB displaying a-helical content and HAX1 exhibiting a disordered nature. Moreover,we employed solutionstate nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy to probe their binding affinity. Our findings demonstrate the formation of stable multimeric complexes between HAX1 and CLPB,and we quantified a dissociation constant in the low range of micro-molar for their high affinity interaction. These results lay the foundation for further in-depth investigations into the dynamics and energetics governing the HAX1-CLPB interaction, ultimately contributing to a comprehensive understanding of their functional mechanisms. 展开更多
