Internal solitary waves(ISWs)are ubiquitous in the Andaman Sea,as revealed by synthetic aperture radar images;however,their generation mechanisms and corresponding influencing factors remain unknown.Based on a nonhydr...Internal solitary waves(ISWs)are ubiquitous in the Andaman Sea,as revealed by synthetic aperture radar images;however,their generation mechanisms and corresponding influencing factors remain unknown.Based on a nonhydrostatic two-dimensional model,the generation of ISW packets along the transect of a channel lying between Batti Malv Island and Car Nicobar Island is investigated.Moreover,the influences of topographic characteristics,seasonal stratifications,and tidal forcings are analyzed through a series of sensitivity runs.The simulation results indicate that bidirectional rank-ordered ISW packets are generated by the nonlinear steepening of internal tides.An east-west ISW asymmetry is observed,which is attributed to distinct topographic characteristics.The surrounding sills can also generate internal wave beams,which modulate the intensity of ISWs.However,the topographic structure of the west flank of the ridge mainly contributes to the suppression of westward ISWs,which decreases the modulating effect of internal wave beams.During the spring tide,the generation of ISWs is enhanced.During the neap tide,ISWs are weak,and the east-west ISW asymmetry is less obvious.Moreover,seasonal stratification only has a minor effect on the generation and evolution of ISWs.展开更多
Advances in Polar Science (APS) has been published since 1990 as a peer-reviewed English-language journal dedicated to the presentation of multi-disciplinary achievements in Arctic and Antarctic expeditions and rese...Advances in Polar Science (APS) has been published since 1990 as a peer-reviewed English-language journal dedicated to the presentation of multi-disciplinary achievements in Arctic and Antarctic expeditions and research (until 2011 it was known as the Chinese Journal of Polar Science [English Edition]). Now, commencing with Vol. 26, No. 3 in 2015, we are moving to make APS more truly international, with two new Co-Editors-in Chief, and a new expert team of disciplinary Editors from China and many other nations involved in polar research (see http://journal.polar.org.cn/EN/column/column80.shtml). In the future, Advances in Polar Science will be a completely separate journal from the Chinese-language version of the Chinese Journal of Polar Research.展开更多
A modular numerical model was developed for simulating density-stratified flow in domains with irregular bottom topography. The model was designed for examining interactions between stratified flow and topography, e.g...A modular numerical model was developed for simulating density-stratified flow in domains with irregular bottom topography. The model was designed for examining interactions between stratified flow and topography, e.g,, tidally driven flow over two-dimensional sills or internal solitary waves propagating over a shoaling bed. The model was based on the non-hydrostatic vorticity-stream function equations for a continuously stratified fluid in a rotating frame. A self-adaptive grid was adopted in the vertical coordinate, the Alternative Direction Implicit (ADI) scheme was used for the time marching equations while the Poisson equation for stream-function was solved based on the Successive Over Relaxation (SOR) iteration with the Chebyshev acceleration. The numerical techniques were described and three applications of the model were presented.展开更多
