Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Body Shape Variation in Glossogobius giuris from Lake Mainit,Agusan del Norte,Philippines

Most fish exhibit remarkable morphological diversity,which is often influenced by genetic variation and ecological pressures.Consequently,these are the outcomes of organisms’responses to their environment.Meanwhile,modern morphometrics can quantify shape variation within species of the same group.This study aims to determine the body shape variation of Glossogobius giuris from Lake Mainit,Agusan Del Norte,Philippines.60 adult,uniform-sized fish samples were collected and subjected to standardized laboratory procedures.Further,the samples were digitized for 16 homologous landmark points and loaded into Symmetry Asymmetry Geometric Data(SAGE)Software.Across the tested factors—individuals,sides,and individual x sides—result shows that shape variations among individuals were highly significant(F=2.1045,p<0.0001),along with among males(F=3.2711,p<0.0001).Females exhibited higher Fluctuating Asymmetry(FA)(F=18.99,p<0.0001)compared to males(F=7.0964,p<0.0001).It suggests morphological shape differences across the sexes,and the shape variation observed could be a response to environmental perturbations.Shape variations were associated with swimming,food hunting,and predator defense.Moreover,Principal Component Analysis(PCA)demonstrates higher scores of FA in females(81.96%)than in males(74.76%).It was noticed that females had a high fluctuating asymmetry.It might be due to various physiological and ecological pressures compared to males.The observed levels of directional and fluctuating asymmetry in males and females,respectively,may indicate sex-linked morphological and developmental processes,which are important to consider in ecological or evolutionary contexts.Thus,utilizing geometric morphometrics can depict subtle differences across the same populations. 展开更多

Electrochemical treatment is an alternative modality for tumor treatment based on the application of a low intensity direct electric current to the tumor tissue through two or more platinum electrodes placed within the tumor zone or in the surrounding areas. This treatment is noted for its great effectiveness, minimal invasiveness and local effect. Several studies have been conducted worldwide to evaluate the anfitumoral effect of this therapy. In all these studies a variety of biochemical and physiological responses of tumors to the applied treatment have been obtained. By this reason, researchers have suggested various mechanisms to explain how direct electric current destroys tumor ceils. Although, it is generally accepted this treatment induces electrolysis, electroosmosis and electroporation in tumoral tissues. However, action mechanism of this alternative modality on the tumor tissue is not well understood. Although the principle of Electrochemical treatment is simple, a standardized method is not yet available. The mechanism by which Electrochemical treatment affects tumor growth and survival may represent more complex process. The present work analyzes the latest and most important research done on the electrochemical treatment of tumors. We conclude with our point of view about the destruction mechanism features of this alternative therapy. Also, we suggest some mechanisms and strategies from the thermodynamic point of view for this therapy. In the area of Electrochemical treatment of cancer this tool has been exploited very little and much work remains to be done. Electrochemical treatment constitutes a good therapeutic option for patients that have failed the conventional oncology methods. 展开更多

The thermal behavior of pipes with a twisted tape inside(used to enhance heat transfer through the tube wall)is studied in the laminar flow regime.Oil is used as the work fluid with the corresponding Reynolds Number spanning the interval 200–2000.It is found that in such conditions the‘Nusselt Number’(Nu)gradually increases with reducing the tape twist ratio,whereas the friction factor is detrimentally affected by the presence of the tape(as witnessed by the comparison with the companion case where a plain tube is considered).In particular,it is shown that the heat transfer efficiency can be improved by nearly 69%if tape inserts with a relatively low twist ratio are used.On the basis of these findings,it is concluded that loose fit tape inserts are superior to tight fit tapes in terms of heat transfer and ease of replacement. 展开更多

The thermo-hydraulic properties of circular tubes with a twisted tape inside(used accordingly to induce turbulence and enhance heat transfer through the tube wall)are described for Reynolds Numbers ranging from 830 to 1990.Tapes twisted with the three distinct twist ratios are considered,namely,6,4.4 and 3.Air is used as the working fluid in several tests.For the sake of comparison,the standard tube with no insert is also examined.It is shown that in the presence of the twisted tape,the‘frictional factor’,‘Nusselt Number’and the‘thermal performance factor’are much higher than those obtained for the plain tube.Moreover,the tapes having the lowest twist ratio,i.e.,3,are more effective than the others in terms of heat transfer augmentation.The‘thermal performance factor’is greater than one for all the twisted tapes used in the experiments,which confirms the enhanced performances of the heat exchanger and the related savings in terms of total energy. 展开更多

The Internet and web security are integral aspects of our daily lives.Many commercial firms provide clients with Internet services.For web access,it is assumed that only the genuine user,who is a human,will register.Yet automated hacking programs can also do registrations with fake data that consume a lot of bandwidth,slowing down or occasionally even shutting down websites,leading to Distributed denial-of-service attacks.Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart(CAPTCHA)is the solution.Complex CAPTCHA is challenging for humans to recognize,but simple CAPTCHA is simple for AI to decipher.With the developments in neural networks and machine learning,bots are mimicking humans,and it is becoming difficult to distinguish humans and bots apart.This generated a need to think of some more innovative and novel CAPTCHA.Now,utilizing the same AIML approach to increase the efficacy of CAPTCHA and make it stronger against the bot attack.Biometric 3D Animated Algorithm proposed in this research is a novel approach based on the Face Detection AI algorithm along with handwritten 3D animated characters selected randomly to create a string which makes CAPTCHA simple that humans can identify but very difficult for bots.The test results have proven this to be a very robust CAPTCHA.The machine learning algorithm employed will keep on increasing the efficacy of this CAPTCHA each time the bot tries to break this. 展开更多

Most of materials used in applications that require high wear resistance also undergo corrosive action of the service environment. The damage caused by the combination of both processes on the materials leads to huge economic losses in industry. Hard coatings are widely used as engineering solution to increase the lifetime of components operating in conditions of wear combined with corrosion. Nowadays, the most versatile techniques for applying such coatings are welding and thermal spraying. This work evaluates and compares the properties of coatings obtained by thermal spraying and welding using selected feeding materials. The performance of the coatings in corrosion and erosive wear tests is discussed. From the erosion tests performed for impact angle of 90°, a similar performance for the thermally sprayed tungsten carbide coatings and the welded stainless steel coatings with higher input energy was observed. Welded samples presented the best performance in corrosion test. 展开更多

Determination of future land use changes using remote sensing imagery and artificial neural network algorithm:A case study of Davao City,Philippines

Land use and land cover(LULC)changes refer to alterations in land use or physical characteristics.These changes can be caused by human activities,such as urbanization,agriculture,and resource extraction,as well as natural phenomena,for example,erosion and climate change.LULC changes significantly impact ecosystem services,biodiversity,and human welfare.In this study,LULC changes in Davao City,Philippines,were simulated,predicted,and projected using a multilayer perception artificial neural network(MLP-ANN)model.The MLP-ANN model was employed to analyze the impact of elevation and proximity to road networks(i.e.,exploratory maps)on changes in LULC from 2017 to 2021.The predicted 2021 LULC map shows a high correlation to the actual LULC map of 2021,with a kappa index of 0.91 and a 96.68%accuracy.The MLP-ANN model was applied to project LULC changes in the future(i.e.,2030 and 2050).The results suggest that in 2030,the built-up area and trees are increasing by 4.50%and 2.31%,respectively.Unfortunately,water will decrease by up to 0.34%,and crops is about to decrease by approximately 3.25%.In the year 2050,the built-up area will continue to increase to 6.89%,while water and crops will decrease by 0.53%and 3.32%,respectively.Overall,the results show that anthropogenic activities influence the land’s alterations.Moreover,the study illustrates how machine learning models can generate a reliable future scenario of land usage changes. 展开更多
