Red tinted contact lenses on Ishihara test error scores in color deficient subjects:a pilot study

AIM:To compare the Ishihara test errors scores of colour vision deficiency(CVD)subjects when wearing four different types of red-tinted contact lenses(RCL)that differ in their transmittance as determined using a spectrophotometer.METHODS:Six congenital CVD subjects volunteered to participate in this study.Ishihara plates were used to determine the colour vision errors made,whereas Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test was conducted to determine the total error scores(TES)and type of CVD.Four types of RCL(Types A,B,C and D)were inserted in the non-dominant eye and tested in a randomised manner by a masked operator.Errors scores in Ishihara test were determined at baseline without any contact lens and after wearing the four different RCL.The subjects were then divided into two groups based on the mean TES.RESULTS:Repeated measures ANOVA with Greenhouse-Geisser corrections showed that there was a highly significant effect of RCL type on Ishihara error score[F(2.056,10.282)=30.214,P<0.001].Error scores with RCL Type B were significantly lower than errors made when no lens was worn,and with RCL Type C and Type D(all P<0.001).Error scores with RCL Type B were also lower than those made with RCL Type A,however,they were not significantly different.For subjects with TES values less than 180,RCL type B showed the largest improvement in Ishihara error score(50%)compared to the other three RCLs.RCL type A showed the best performance in TES value of more than 180,with an improvement of 80%in Ishihara score.RCL Type A has the lowest transmittance at the confusion wavelength(450-568 nm),followed by RCL Types B,D and C.CONCLUSION:This study shows that RCL can improve Ishihara error scores.RCL with lower transmission at 450-568 nm and 90%transmittance beyond 637 nm are the most effective.Lenses which could block more light between 550-580 nm are more effective for colour defectives with more severe colour defects. 展开更多

AIM:To compare visual efficiency,specifically accommodation,vergence,and oculomotor functions among athletes and non-athletes.METHODS:A cross-sectional study on sports vision screening was used to evaluate the visual skills of 214elementary students(107 athletes,107 non-athletes),aged between 13 and 16y.The visual screening assessed visual parameters such as ocular motor alignment,accommodation,and vergence functions.RESULTS:Mean visual parameters were compared between age-group matched athletes(mean age14.82±0.98y)and non-athletes(mean age 15.00±1.04y).The refractive errors of all participants were corrected to maximal attainable best corrected visual acuity of log MAR0.0.Accommodation function assessment evaluated amplitude of accommodation and accommodation facility.Vergence functions measured the near point of convergence,vergence facility,and distance fusional vergence at break and recovery point.Ocular motor alignment was not statistically significant between both groups.Athletes had a statistically significant amplitude of accommodation for both the right eye(t=2.30,P=0.02)and the left eye(t=1.99,P=0.05).Conversely,non-athletes had better accommodation facility(t=-2.54,P=0.01)and nearpoint of convergence(t=4.39,P〈0.001)when compared to athletes.Vergence facility was found to be better among athletes(t=2.47,P=0.01).Nevertheless,non-athletes were significantly better for both distance negative and positive fusional vergence.CONCLUSION:Although the findings are still inconclusive as to whether athletes had superior visual skills as compared to non-athletes,it remains important to identify and elucidate the key visual skills needed by athletes in order for them to achieve higher performance in their sports. 展开更多

Background Development of myopia among young children is often contributed to the refractive status of the parents. This study was conducted to determine whether myopia can be inherited across the generation among a sample in the Klang Valley. Three generations involved are: G1 (grandparents), G2 (parents) and G3 (children). Methods Sixty-two families were screened and forty families were selected to participate in this study. The inclusion criterion is having at least one myopic member in any of the three generations. Subjects (G2) were first asked to fill up a questionnaire form before their refractive status was determined by clinical examination that provided acuity of 6/6 or better. Refractive status of G1 was determined using information from the questionnaire while for G2 and G3 through clinical examination. Results Generally, the prevalence of myopia is seen to increase throughout the generations from G1 being the lowest (25.6%) to G3 being the highest (41.1%). Strong genetic influence can be found between G1 and G2 as majority of myopes in G2 is when both parents were myopic. However, although the prevalence of myopia increased from G2 to G3, there was no strong genetical influence. Majority of subjects in G3 were non-myopes when both their parents were myopic. Conclusion Parental historv accounts for a limited DrODOrtion of variance in mvoeia development. 展开更多
