Eye diseases with a prevalence associated with age and aging will continue to increase in the coming years. Most studies conducted on problems in middle-aged people have focused on visual disorders without taking into account all the ocular morbidities that may affect this segment of the population, hence the present study, the aim of which is to determine the proportions of different eye diseases in people aged 40 and over. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in the ophthalmology department covering the period from January 1 to December 31, 2020. Results: In total, we collected 828 patients aged 40 and over out of 1811 patients who received ophthalmological consultation during the study period, representing 45.72%. The most represented age group was 40 - 50 years, with an average age of 58.84 years and a maximum of 93 years. There were slightly more women (62.3%) than men (37.7%). The main reasons for consultation were decreased visual acuity (26.4%) and pruritus (19.9%). The main eye diseases diagnosed were cataracts (23%), allergic conjunctivitis (21.1%), and bacterial conjunctivitis (14.2%). Discussions: The predominance of cataracts in the diagnosed diseases confirms the literature data, according to which the main eye morbidities in middle-aged and elderly people are cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Conclusion: It is crucial to have a mastery of these epidemiological data of eye diseases in order to adapt the technical platforms of eye care structures to the needs of different segments of the population.展开更多

文摘AIM:To evaluate the effect of different monochromatic lights on the refractive status and the secretion levels of neurotransmitters in the progressive myopic model of guinea pigs.METHODS:Guinea pigs(n=90)underwent different monochromatic lights irradiation for two weeks were randomly divided into 6 groups:white light(control),ultraviolet(UV),blue, green, red, and simulative sunlight(simSUN).The refractive status and axial length(AL)were measured.Transmission electron microscopy,Masson’s trichrome staining and hematoxylin-eosin staining were performed to observe the structural changes of retina and sclera.High-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),western blotting and immunofluorescence were used to measure neurotransmitters and their receptors.RESULTS:Myopia models were established successfully. When compared the degrees of change in myopic eyes of control group, the UV group showed a minor decrease in AL and refraction, along with a significant increase in scleral thickness. In contrast, the red and green groups revealed a net increase in AL and refraction, coupled with a net decrease in scleral thickness(all,P<0.01).The dopamine concentration increased in the UV group, while concentrations of serotonin and melatonin significantly decreased(all,P<0.01).The groups that were exposed to UV,blue and simSUN,the expression of dopamine receptor D2(DRD2)increased,and the expression of hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A(HTR2A)and melatonin receptor type 2(MT2)decreased significantly when compared to the control group(all P<0.01).CONCLUSION:Exposure to short-wavelength light could slow the development of myopia by promoting the production of dopamine and suppressing the serotonin and melatonin concentration. The neurotransmitter receptors MT2,DRD2,and HTR2A in the sclera appear to play different roles by different color lights in myopic guinea pigs.
文摘Although eye problems can occur at any age, they are often common from the age of 40. Conclusion: It is crucial to have a mastery of these epidemiological data of eye diseases in order to adapt the technical platforms of eye care structures to the needs of different segments of the population.

文摘This study aimed to differentiate between the therapeutic and purely cosmetic aspects of keratopigmentation by examining the results of previous studies.Corneal opacity, corneal leukoma, and iris abnormalities represent the primary reasons for keratopigmentation in therapeutic settings. In therapeutic contexts, the most commonly reported adverse effects included inflammation, foreign body sensation, light sensitivity, reduced intraocular pressure, and neovascularization. The side effects most frequently noted in purely cosmetic applications were photophobia and ectasia. In therapeutic scenarios, patients who experience pre-operative vision impairment often report not only the absence of visual loss post-procedure but also an enhancement in visual acuity, accompanied by alleviation of symptoms such as glare. In purely cosmetic procedures, visual acuity tends to remain stable.Research indicates that dissatisfaction with keratopigmentation results is more prevalent in studies aimed at therapeutic interventions compared to cosmetic enhancements.Furthermore, instances of discoloration and fading are more frequently observed in therapeutic cases than in cosmetic ones, including the need for retouching. The use of keratopigmentation in both therapeutic and cosmetic settings produces positive and acceptable results, especially in cosmetic applications.Nevertheless, complications are more commonly observed in therapeutic situations, which underscores the importance of candidate selection for keratopigmentation procedures.
文摘Introduction: Refractive errors in school children continue to receive less attention and priority in many developing countries. Refractive errors can be a source of poor vision and disinterest in school. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of ametropia in school children. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at the International Ophthalmology Center of Mali covering the period from January 1 to June 30, 2024, involving all school children. Results: A total of 207 children out of 702 school children received during the study period presented refractive errors. The most affected age group was 16 - 20 years old, with an average age of 16.95 years. The female sex was the majority, with 77.2% compared to 22.2% for the male sex. The main reasons for consultation were visual fatigue (36.2%) and tearing (20.2%). Hyperopia astigmatism was the most common refractive error, with a frequency of 62.3%. Low ametropia (Discussions: The management of refractive errors in school children is a major factor in their educational success. 文摘AIM:To compare refractive error and angle of deviation in patients with basic esotropia and basic exotropia.METHODS:A retrospective review was conducted on the medical records of patients with basic-type strabismus.Demographic data, refractive error,best-corrected distance visual acuity(BCVA),and the horizontal and vertical angle of deviation between basic esotropia and exotropia patients were compared.RESULTS:Among the 7129 patients(mean age 22.98±14.81y)evaluated,44.7%(3185 cases,54.9%male)exhibited basic-type esotropia, while 55.3%(3944 cases,53.9%male)presented with basic-type exotropia.Basic esotropia cases exhibited more hyperopic spherical equivalent measurements in both eyes(right:0.53±3.07 vs left:0.56±2.98 D)than those with basic exotropia(right eye:-0.33±2.84 vs left eye:-0.24±2.68 D,P<0.001 for both eyes).Patients with basic esotropia had significantly greater horizontal deviation angles(near:36.08±18.87 PD and far:35.56±18.75 PD)compared to those with basic exotropia(near:33.75±16.11 PD and far:33.26±15.90 PD,P<0.001).Conversely,patients with basic exotropia had slightly higher vertical deviation angles(near:1.67±5.80 PD and far:1.72±5.89 PD)compared to those with basic esotropia(near:1.12±4.57 PD and far:1.12±4.58 PD,P<0.001).Patients with basic esotropia underwent surgical intervention at younger ages compared to basic exotropia individuals(19.68±15.99 vs 25.66±13.20,P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Basic esotropia patients present more hyperopic refractive errors, better visual acuity, larger horizontal yet smaller vertical ocular misalignments, and tend to undergo strabismus surgery at younger ages relative to basic exotropia cases.
文摘AIM:To compare objective dry retinoscopy and subjective refraction measurements in patients with mild keratoconus(KCN)and quantify any differences.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was done on 68 eyes of 68 patients diagnosed with mild KCN.Objective dry retinoscopy using autorefractometer and subjective refraction measurements were performed.Sphere,cylinder,J0,J45,and spherical equivalent values were compared between the two techniques.RESULTS:The mean age of 68 patients with mild KCN was 21.32±5.03y(12–35y).There were 37(54.4%)males.Objective refraction yielded significantly more myopic sphere(-1.44 D vs-0.57 D),higher cylinder magnitude(-2.24 D vs-1.48 D),and more myopic spherical equivalent(-2.56 D vs-1.31 D)compared to subjective refraction(all P<0.05).The mean differences were-0.87 D for sphere,-0.76 D for cylinder,and-1.25 D for spherical equivalent. No significant differences were found for J0 and J45 values, indicating agreement in astigmatism axis(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:In patients with mild KCN,objective dry retinoscopy overestimates the degree of myopia and astigmatism compared to subjective refraction. The irregular cornea in KCN likely impacts objective measurements.Subjective refraction allows compensation for irregularity, providing a more accurate correction. When determining refractive targets, the tendency of objective methods to overcorrect should be considered.

文摘AIM:To examine whether rs2472493 and rs248032 in the ABCA1 gene,rs3785176 in the PMM2 gene, and rs11827818 in the ARHGEF12 gene contribute to primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)in an Iranian population.METHODS:Totally 82 POAG patients and 172 healthy controls were enrolled. The selected gene polymorphisms were analyzed using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay using deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)extracted from blood samples.Allelic and genotypic frequencies were evaluated using the Chi-square test. The association between the genotypes of single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)and POAG was assessed using multiple logistic regression models. The linkage disequilibrium and haplotype block structure were assessed using the Haploview 4.2 software.RESULTS:The results showed a significant association between allele frequencies of rs2472493 in the ABCA1 gene locus and POAG[odds ratio(OR)=1.58,95%confidence intervals(CI)=1.04-2.39,P=0.031].The rs3785176 in the PMM2 gene was also associated with POAG in additive and over dominant genotypes. Moreover, haplotype analysis showed a significant association of two estimated haplotypes of rs2472493/rs2487032 with POAG.The AA haplotype showed a reduction in POAG risk(OR=0.41,95%CI=0.202-0.834,P=0.012),while the GG haplotype was associated with the disease. In addition, this study could not discover any association between genotype and allele frequency of rs248032 in the ABCA1 gene, and rs11827818 in ARHGEF12 gene and POAG.CONCLUSION:rs2472493 in the ABCA1 gene can be considered a genetic susceptibility locus for POAG.The haplotype constructed with ABCA1 gene SNPs(rs2472493/rs2487032)is associated with POAG.
文摘AIM:To identify differences in clinical features between thyroid eye disease(TED)patients with and without strabismus.METHODS:This retrospective,single-center,consecutive case series study was conducted on TED patients who were determined to be surgical candidates. The patients’cohort were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of strabismus.Demographics and complete eye examinations were recorded and compared between the TED and TED with strabismus groups.RESULTS:A total of 76 patients with TED were enrolled, including 58 males(76.3%)with a mean age of 52.68±10.45y.The 55 patients(male:female=2:1)were found to have TED with strabismus, while the remaining 21 patients(male:female=4:1)had TED without strabismus. There was nearly a four times greater likelihood of lid retraction being associated with TED without strabismus(OR=4.1,P=0.018)and they showed higher prevalence of proptosis(95.2%)than the TED strabismus group(63.6%,P<0.001).In the TED-strabismus group,20%of patients had abnormal head posture(AHP),while none were identified in the TED group(P=0.029).Despite the higher incidence of vision-threatening complications such as dysthyroid optic neuropathy(19%vs 8.1%)and exposure keratopathy(4.8%vs 1.8%)in the TED group than in the TED-strabismus group, the difference did not reach statistical significance(P>0.05).The most common types of strabismus were hypotropia(36%)and esotropia(29%),respectively.CONCLUSION:Strabismus-associated TED is characterized by a lower prevalence of proptosis and lid retraction, but a higher incidence of compensatory AHP.Identifying these differences may aid in risk stratification and early intervention for TED patients, particularly those at risk for restrictive strabismus.

文摘Biomechanical study of the visual system by ocular response analyzer investigates the inter-structural biological relationships, mechanics, and function of the visual system. This review aimed to investigate the changes in corneal biomechanical parameters with age and sex.The articles published in PubMed between 2000 and 2021 were investigated and critiqued, and valid scientific evidence was collected, reviewed and concluded according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most studies showed that corneal biomechanical changes occur infrequently in children up to the age of 20y,and with increasing age and wider age range, there was a significant decrease in corneal biomechanical indices, especially corneal hysteresis. In children and adults, most studies have shown that these biomechanical indicators, especially corneal resistance factor, were higher in females.Although hormonal changes may contribute to this finding, the role of axial length and other biometric indicators should not be ignored. The axial length, the intraocular pressure, and the corneal thickness are other factors associated with biomechanical parameters that should be taken into account in clinical diagnosis and management especially for patients undergoing refractive surgery as well as keratoconus patients.
