In this pilot study, a first-person demonstration video for tracheostomy suctioning skills was shown to participants via a virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), which we referred to as a VR teaching material (VR-TM). In an intervention experiment, we investigated the effects of the VR-TM on participants’ performance on the skill assessment test. Additionally, usability of the VR-TM was evaluated by questionnaire ratings. Methods: Thirty-six participants (nursing students) were assigned to three groups in the experiment: 1) VR group: the participants that viewed the VR-TM, 2) TR group: the participants that viewed a traditional demonstration video from a third-person perspective, and 3) NO group: the participants that received no intervention. Score changes in the skill assessments of participants before the intervention (pre-test) and after the intervention (post-test) were analyzed. After the experiment, all participants completed a faculty-designed questionnaire about the VR-TM usability. Results: The questionnaire ratings indicated that the participants evaluated the VR-TM favorably in terms of skill understanding and motivation to practice the skill. However, one-third of participants reported mild discomfort during the VR-TM. In regards to score changes in the skill assessment test, no significant difference between the VR and TR groups was identified, though the two groups produced greater score changes compared to the NO group. Conclusion: The combination of first-person video and the HMD might be promising as a teaching material for nursing skills, though further improvements are necessary.展开更多

However, experts’ observation behavior and cognitive processes cannot be easily verbalized or documented in an objective and accurate manner. Quantitative analysis of the observation behavior of nurses with rich clinical experience will yield effective educational data for fostering and improving nursing students’ observation skills. Objectives: To improve nursing assessment education, the differences in the information gathering processes between clinical nurses and nursing students were analyzed by using a portable eye-tracker. Design: An experimental study. Settings: The experiment was performed at a university in Japan. Participants: The participants were 11 clinical nurses with at least 5 years of clinical experience for postoperative patients, and 10 fourth-year nursing students. Methods: In a mock hospital room, wherein we recreated a situation where a patient in postoperative day 1 was confined to a bed, participants wore an eye-tracking camera and engaged in nursing observation to make an early postoperative ambulation assessment of the patient. Participants’ gaze points and gaze fixation durations were extracted from the gaze measurement data and compared. Results: Clinical nurses had shorter observation times and gaze durations than did nursing students, and focused more on the patient chart, intravenous drip, and indwelling drain. Students gazed for longest at the measuring devices for vital signs. Conclusions: We quantitatively analyzed differences in nursing observation according to clinical experience. Although no significant difference was found in gaze points, nursing students had a greater tendency to focus on information that was numerically displayed. Nurses with clinical experience conducted observations by gazing at information that they needed to focus on the most according to the patients’ postoperative course.展开更多

Medical errors are one of the major challenges that health systems in all countries are grappling with to minimize and reduce the damage caused by them. The aim of this study was to assess the Patient Safety Attitudes, Skills, Knowledge and Barriers Related to Reporting Medical Errors by Nursing Students in Ilam, Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed method was conducted to this study. Sampling was conducted by census of all students entering nursing criteria in Ilam in 2016. A number of 140 students participated in this study. The tool used in this study was created by Schnall et al. that measures knowledge, attitudes and skills related to medical errors reporting. Data were analyzed with t test, regression and correlation coefficients and descriptive statistical methods. Results: The results showed that nursing students had a positive attitude with respect to the reporting of medical errors (p = 0.01). They also have the low knowledge to medical errors and reporting them. There were significant differences in all groups and subgroups of knowledge, attitude, and skills (except creating of safety culture subgroup) between the two group’s students. Moreover, the main reason for not reporting was the lack of knowledge and fear of punishment. Conclusions: The results of this study help those who involve in the health care system to improve patient safety and improve the process of reporting medical errors by nursing students’ participation in the process of reporting error, while improving knowledge and attitudes through nursing education with the effective educational models. As a result, there is a need to educate students on reporting systems.展开更多

文摘Background:Globalization and increasing migration have amplified cultural diversity in healthcare services. This has rendered intercultural tolerance-a respectful and equity-based approach to differing values and beliefs-a necessity in nursing care.Although intercultural tolerance is recognized in the literature as a core component of cultural competence the prevalence of this attitude among nurses and its associated factors remain underexplored in clinical practice. Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2020 and May 2021 in a public hospital in Istanbul. The population consisted of 2,096 nurses, and 767 of them voluntarily participated in the study via an online survey(response rate:36.6%).The data collection tool included sociodemographic variables,culture-oriented descriptive characteristics, and literature-based items on intercultural tolerance.A self-assessment scale from 1 to 10 was used to evaluate personal tolerance levels. The instrument was not subjected to psychometric validation;only a pilot study for clarity was conducted.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent group comparisons, and multiple linear regression.Power analysis indicated a minimum sample size of 175,confirming the adequacy of the sample. Results:The majority of participants reported high tolerance scores(M=8.2±1.5).Most nurses endorsed the right to equal healthcare(96.7%),respect for cultural diversity(94.3%),and empathy(91.7%).However,41.3%reported awareness of their own biases, and 45.1%experienced discomfort related to language differences.Regression analysis revealed that empathy, attentiveness to cultural differences(i.e.,avoiding identical treatment of all),and egalitarian intercultural attitudes positively predicted tolerance. In contrast, discomfort with unfamiliar languages, overconfidence in cultural knowledge, and structural factors such as the clinical unit were negatively associated with tolerance. Conclusion:Although nurses generally demonstrate positive attitudes toward intercultural tolerance, internal biases and institutional barriers continue to hinder its full expression.Empathy and self-awareness should be supported not only cognitively but also through emotional and behavioral interventions.Accordingly, the integration of structured cultural competence programs into nursing education, institutional support mechanisms, and pedagogical strategies for managing prejudice are strongly recommended.
文摘BACKGROUND Percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PNL)is the standard treatment for medium-sized and large kidney stones. Many potential complications of PNL may warrant hospital readmission(HR)after discharge, threatening patient safety and increasing the costs.AIM To estimate the rate of unplanned HR after PNL and identify its urological and nursing-related predictors.METHODS One hundred sixty-one patients were prospectively studied for HR after PNL from April 2022 to December 2022.The relevant urological and nursing-related characteristics of patients with and without unplanned HR after PNL were studied for association with HR,using univariate and multivariate analyses.Variables such as the demographic characteristics, comorbidities, laboratory and imaging characteristics, dietary status, operative time, number of kidney punctures, blood loss, urinary tract infections, and the receipt of instructions for catheter care and activities of daily living were included.A risk score was created.RESULTS The mean age of patients with HR(44.4±12.7 years)and without HR(43.9±12.6 years)was similar(P=0.847).The overall stone-free rate was 88.8%.The total complication rate was 32.3%(52 patients),and the highest grade was IIIa,according to the modified Clavein grading system, resulting in an HR rate of 22.4%.History of preoperative pyuria(P=0.001),hydronephrosis(P=0.001)and mean stone size(P=0.012),multiple renal punctures(P<0.001),double J stent(P=0.033),total operative time(P=0.001),intraoperative injury(P=0.011),postoperative urinary tract infection(P<0.001),and inadequate instructions for urethral catheter(P=0.001)and activity daily living(P=0.048)were significantly associated with HR after PNL.On multivariate analysis, only preoperative pyuria(P=0.004),intraoperative injury(P=0.001),and inadequate instructions on urethral catheter care(P=0.035)were associated with HR.The risk score of the independent predictors was 0-17;0-4(low risk),5-9(moderate risk),and 10-17(high risk).CONCLUSION The rate of unplanned HR after PNL was relatively high(22.4%).The presence of pus cells in the preoperative urine analysis, intraoperative injury, and receiving inadequate instructions on urethral catheter care were independent predictors of HR after PNL.Combined studying of the urological and nursing-related predictors may promote the implementation of enhanced recovery protocols after PNL.

文摘Objectives:To compare the frequency of passing scores of nursing students participating in objective structured clinical examination(OSCE)by 4 methods of fixed score,Angoff,yes/no Angoff, and 3-level Angoff. The OSCE is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate the competency of nursing students. To have a fair judgment in OSCE,it is important to determine the standard setting. Methods:In this descriptive-analytical study, which was conducted in 2022,the 7-station OSCE scores and the passing rates of students were compared based on fixed score,Angoff,yes/no Angoff, and the 3-level Angoff by a panel of experts. The research population included nursing teachers(n=13)and nursing students(n=65).Due to the small number of participants, the number of samples in each of these 2 groups was equal to the total number of people in the research population. Results:Findings revealed that of the 13 nursing teachers who participated in the study, the majority were female and had a master’s degree.Among the 65 students taking part in OSCE,the majority were males. Results showed that the passing rate varied depending on the type of OSCE station and the standard-setting methods used.Differences in some cases were statistically significant(P<0.001).Conclusions:Findings suggest that the frequency of passing can vary depending on the method used.It is advisable to consider the average score from multiple methods to accurately determine the passing rate and achieve a more accurate acceptance rate.
文摘Objectives:This study examined the levels of shared leadership and missed nursing care and their relationship among nurses in Egypt. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted. From February to April 2024,340 nurses worked in all inpatient care units at Alexandria Main University Hospital. The Shared Leadership and Missed Nursing Care Survey was used for evaluation. Results:The overall score of shared leadership was(72.62±4.30),which imitates a high perception of shared leadership among nurses;the dimension of delegation achieved the highest average mean score(3.66±0.26),followed by collaboration(3.64±0.31),the vision dimension scored the lowest mean score(3.59±0.33).The elements of missed nursing care had a total score of(46.72±5.69),and the dimension of secondary care achieved the highest average mean score(3.74±0.31).The reasons for missed nursing care had a total mean score of(22.40±1.59),and the dimension of labor resources achieved the highest average mean score(3.20±0.22).Male nurses, less than 30 years old, married, held a bachelor’s degree in nursing sciences, less than five years of experience in the nursing profession, and less than five years of experience in the current working unit had higher total scores of the shared leadership and lower total scores of missed nursing care(P<0.001).A negative correlation existed between shared leadership and two dimentisons(the elements of nursing care[r=-0.383],the reasons for missing nursing care[r=-0.047])(P<0.001).Conclusions:The study’s findings can help as a theoretical underpinning for nursing leaders to stand in an environment that reduces the incidence of missed nursing care by encouraging teamwork, responsibility, workload management, and empowerment among nurses.
文摘Objective:To assess the level of nursing students’knowledge about delirium and its associated risk factors.Delirium is a clinical syndrome characterized by alterations in cognition and psychomotor activity.Since delirium is common among geriatric patients, adequate preparedness of nursing students to assess and manage delirious geriatric patients is necessary to improve potential nurses’quality of care and communication with this group.Limited research work was conducted to address nursing students’knowledge about delirium. Methods:This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from October 2022 to February 2023.A convenience sampling was used, and 319 valid questionnaires were obtained from nursing students from six Jordanian governmental and private universities, who were at least in their third academic year.An adopted delirium knowledge scale was used to collect data.Descriptive statistics and an independent t-test were used for data analysis. Results:The mean for general knowledge about delirium was 57.5%.The mean for knowledge of delirium risk factors was 61.8%.Nursing students in their fourth academic year scored significantly higher on both general knowledge and risk knowledge scales than students in the third academic year. Conclusions:Nursing students’knowledge regarding delirium and its risk factors was low.Educational efforts should be maximized for incorporating and addressing the topic of delirium in the undergraduate nursing curriculum.Implications of this study include revising nursing curricula to ensure that students receive enough education on delirium, including its detection, diagnosis, and management. The implications also include giving nursing students the chance to gain experience in caring for delirious patients and providing them with the tools and resources they need to assess and manage delirium.
文摘Nursing education in Indonesia experienced a number of changes during the new normal. The biopsychosocial health status reveals how students can complete their studies well at nursing school in the new normal.A quantitative, descriptive correlational study sampled 368 student nurses from2 universities. This study used a biopsychosocial questionnaire, which included biological, physiological, and social dimensions. In this study, there was no significant demographic student nurse relationship with the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of health,at P-value 0.05(Age P=0.70,P=0.27,P=0.93)sex(P=1,P=0.919,P=0.5),as well as grade level(P=0.9,P=0.37,P=0.64).Student nurses were dynamic, such as process input, resulting in coping adaptation and the ability to care for themselves. There was a relationship between both universities with a psychological dimension and a P-value of 0.049.In terms of Generation Z technology, both universities played a role.Lifestyle influences can lead to intense feelings of isolation and loneliness in some teens, including self-negativity,fear of missing out on information, and shame about not meeting appropriate standards for social media. The influence of an unhealthy lifestyle impacts stress and anxiety. The student nurses assigned considered themselves to be“healthy”in terms of their biopsychosocial health status.Student nurses continued to develop in their biopsychosocial health by utilizing different coping strategies to adapt and adjust to their environment in their school of nursing.

文摘Background:The mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of exercise on the human placenta are poorly understood. The objective of the current study was to ascertain the influence of a supervised concurrent exercise intervention from gestational Week 17 until birth on key cytokines involved in placental development and function.Secondary aims were to explore:(a)the moderating effects of fetal sex and maternal weight status;and(b)whether gestational weight gain, lifestyle behaviors(diet, sleep patterns, and physical activity),and physical fitness(strength and cardiorespiratory fitness)mediated the effects of exercise on placental cytokines.Methods:Seventy-six pregnant women(33±4 years, mean±SD),divided into exercise(n=40)and control(n=36)groups,participated in this study. The exercise group followed a 60-min,3 days/week(aerobic+resistance)training program of moderate-to-vigorous intensity.Placental cytokines—including granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor(GM-CSF),granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(G-CSF),plateletderived growth factor AA(PDGF-AA),epidermal growth factor(EGF),monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1),fractalkine,interleukin(IL)-8,IL-6,IL-1β,interleukin 1-receptor antagonist(IL-1ra),IL-10,tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-a),and interferon gamma(IFN-γ)were analyzed using Luminex multi-analyte profiling(x MAP)technology. Results:The exercise group presented higher placental levels of G-CSF and lower concentrations of EGF and IL-1ra than the control group(p<0.05).Significant effects of exercise on placental G-CSF and TNF-a(p<0.05)and a trend toward lower IL-6(p=0.08)were observed only in female placentas.Additionally,a reduction in weight gain partially mediated the effects of exercise on G-CSF(p<0.05).Conclusion:Maternal exercise during pregnancy is related to increased placental levels of G-CSF and lower EGF and IL-1ra levels. Some exercise-induced effects are observed exclusively in female placentas, including increased G-CSF and lower TNF-a and IL-6 concentrations.Notably, the increased levels of G-CSF observed with exercise might be due to a more adequate gestational weight gain.
文摘Aim: This study aimed to elucidate experience-related differences in the impact of an intervention program promoting ethical nursing practices among pediatric nurses with 0 - 5 years’ experience in varying settings. Methods: The pediatric nursing care model, defining 24 elements of pediatric nursing practice, was developed to educate nurses with pediatric nursing experience only, as well as those with experience in other settings, on ethical nursing practices toward pediatric patients and their families. Participants’ level of knowledge and frequency of application of these practices were assessed before, directly after and two months after the intervention, with a final follow-up three months post-intervention. Results: Results showed that among those who have experience in nursing areas other than pediatrics, the frequency of practicing items related to children’s rights and dignity significantly increased (p Conclusions: Participants showed an increased awareness of issues related to ethical pediatric nursing practice for patients’ and their parents.
文摘Background: While demonstration videos from a third-person perspective have traditionally been used as teaching materials for nursing skills, first-person videos allow observers to experience how nursing educators move and what they see. Conclusion: The combination of first-person video and the HMD might be promising as a teaching material for nursing skills, though further improvements are necessary.
文摘Objective:This research study explores the perceptions of gerontological nursing competencies, attitudes toward older individuals, and the willingness to provide care for the elderly among internship nursing students.Materials and Methods:A convenience sample of 350 internship nursing students from Cairo University Faculty of Nursing participated in the study.Data were collected using a set of comprehensive tools, including personal data and work experience assessment, the Hartford geriatric nurse competency tool,Kogan’s attitudes toward old people scale, and the modified elderly patient care inventory. Results:Descriptive analysis revealed balanced gender representation, with 60%identifying as female.Seventy percent of participants reported prior experience in gerontological care.Self-assessed competency scores indicated moderate proficiency in communication, physiological changes, and functional status assessment.Areas such as pain management and restraint use demonstrated potential gaps in self-perceived skills.Attitudes toward older individuals were predominantly positive, and the willingness to provide care showed positive tendencies, with a minor degree of hesitation noted. Conclusion:The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions in nursing education to address competency gaps, enhance positive attitudes, and alleviate potential hesitations in caregiving for older individuals. As the elderly population continues to grow, nursing education programs must prepare future practitioners to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care tailored to the unique needs of older adults.
文摘Objective:The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and level of social media addiction among nursing students in the Faculty of Nursing,Cairo University.Materials and Methods:A descriptive cross‑sectional research design was conducted on samples of 340 students at the Faculty of Nursing,Cairo University.Data were collected through demographic background information sheet and Social Networking Addiction Scale. Results:All the students were addicted as 6.76%were severely addicted and 60.59%and 32.65%were moderately and mildly addicted, respectively.Significant relations were found between social media addiction and students’age(χ^(2)=11.331,P=0.003),educational level(χ^(2)=20.239,P=0.003),and grade point average(χ^(2)=19.378,P=0.013).Conclusion:Internet addiction was prevalent among all students but at different levels,so early screening of students for Internet addiction using the Internet Addiction Scale is important to provide early treatment and prevent hazards to health.
文摘Background: Observation is an important skill for making appropriate nursing decisions and engaging in good practice. Nurses with clinical experience conducted observations by gazing at information that they needed to focus on the most according to the patients’ postoperative course.

文摘Introduction: Health care system structure is prone to human error. As a result, there is a need to educate students on reporting systems.
