A Comparative study on generalized Manev potential and Newtonian potential in perturbed restricted four-body problem

The motion of a test particle within the context of the restricted four-body problem(R4BP)driven by a new kind of potential,called the generalized Manev potential,with perturbations in the Coriolis and centrifugal forces is considered in this study.The system possesses eight libration points which were distributed on its plane of motion in different manner from those of the usual Newtonian potential.Unlike the case of the perturbed R4BP under Newtonian potential,where two of these librations are stable,all of them are unstable in linear sense under Manev potential.We found that a gradual perturbation in the centrifugal force causes the trajectories of motion to drift inward but the Coriolis force was proven to have no effect on the location of the libration points of the system.Using first order Lyapunov characteristic exponents,the dynamical behavior of the system is found irregular.We experimented with a high velocity stellar system(82 G.Eridani)to establish the applicability of the model in astrophysics. 展开更多

The importance of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System in map making cannot be overemphasized because of its ability to integrate spatial data with non-spatial data and also communicate the resulting information in a way that everyone would understand. Several works have taken advantage of the abilities of these technologies to produce street maps using High Resolution Images. The increase in development in Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, has brought about navigation challenge and associated difficulties. This work intends to produce a street map that will ease navigation within the study area and help in road network analysis, site suitability analysis etc. Aerial Photographs, captured in the year 2009 and GeoEye1 Satellite Image of 2011 were used to extract the road network of Ife Metropolis. The image was imported into ArcGIS environment, where the database was created having feature datasets such as roads and special features. To have all the elements in vector format, the image was digitized. The street names collected from the field work was inputted into the database and then subjected to cartographical processes. 512 Roads were captured within four classes of Road Network namely Express road (5), Secondary Road (25), Primary Roads (22) and Street Road (460). This field work revealed that a larger percentage of the roads were not paved, while most of the paved ones have deteriorated and the newly constructed ones were not documented. It also showed that some of the roads were not named according to the standard and some were not named at all. From this study, we recommend that the naming system should be standardized across the study area. It is also recommended that provision should be made for street map revision on a yearly basis so as to account for changes. 展开更多

Effects of Increasing Impervious Surface on Water Quality in Ile-Ife Urban Watershed, Southwestern Nigeria

The urban environment has continued to experience changes from increasing impervious surfaces, which alters the proper functioning of the ecological zones and impairs water quality in the watershed. Impervious cover is predominantly used as an indicator to assist in understanding and forecasting the impact of human actions and other related activities on aquatic resources. In this study, the rate of change in land uses using the impervious surface as an indicator, and the percentage of imperviousness on the effect on water quality in the urban watershed were assessed. Ile-Ife was delineated as an urban watershed, and the percentage of imperviousness from 2008 to 2016 and the effect of imperviousness on water bodies were assessed. The study utilized ASTERDEM, Worldview (0.46 m), IKONOS (1.4 m), Landsat (30 m) for 2008 and 2016, GPS and Drone (10 cm). Water sampling was carried out in selected locations as generated by the impervious surface analyst tool, (ISAT). The percentage (%) of impervious surfaces accounted for 59.4% (4567.1/7691.5ha) in 2008 and 70.3% (5408.2/7691.5ha) in 2016, from the total number of lands investigated. The turbidity values from low to high regions were 32.3, 55.9 and 82.4 NUT. Changes in LULC of the watershed led to increased surface temperature, impermeable surfaces, and decreased vegetation, which exposes the area to flooding and reduced water quality. This study emphasized the importance of GIS and its integration into urban changes and water quality assessment. 展开更多

Comparative Accuracy Assessment of Combined MODIS and NAAPS Aerosol Optical Depth with AERONET Data over North Africa

Aerosol is one of the important geophysical parameters that determine the earth’s radiation budget, energy balance and hydrological cycle. The “Deep Blue” Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm was designed to complement existing “Dark Target” Ocean and Land algorithms to be able to retrieve AOD over bright land surface. Using level 2 AOD data from five Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) stations over the study location of North Africa (0°S - 40°N, 30°W - 60°E), comparative accuracy assessments are made for combined MODIS AOD aboard Terra and Aqua satellites and US Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS) forecast AOD data. The aerosol transport and vertical mixing over the region are investigated at different altitudes up to 3000 m above ground level using Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT). The MODIS validation result shows highest correlation in the Sub-Sahel (0.811) followed by Sahel (0.726) and then Sahara region (0.662). Furthermore, the combined retrieval algorithm of Terra and Aqua MODIS shows statistically significant discrepancies from AERONET AOD values in term of mean, t-test value, index of agreement and fractional error. The comparison of NAAPS predicted soil dust to AERONET AOD fared best in December to February (DJF) season for the Sahel region and June to August (JJA) season for the Sahara when the dust emission and transport are at the peak. However, median ratios of NAAPS to AERONET AOD indicated bias in some island sites in the Atlantic Ocean which may be due to the presence of sea salt over the site. The analysis carried out in this study reveals that both MODIS retrieval algorithm and NAAPS model could be improved by incorporating some local aerosol sources from the study area. 展开更多

Astronomy is not left out;as a study of everything beyond earth’s atmosphere, useful signals have to travel great distances to reach us. Hence the need for equipment to detect such signals. The Helical Antenna is known to possess high gain (directivity) and can process signals with any type of orientation/polarization which implies high sensitivity hence the desire to use it. Simulation was done using the legacy 4NEC2 software. The purpose of this paper is to design a circularly polarized helical antenna operating in axial mode that is suitable for detection of neutral hydrogen line emission at the frequency of 1420 MHz and to show how it can be used as a feed for an off-set parabolic dish. 展开更多

Geomagnetic field over Akure was monitored and measured using a locally produced magnetometer. The geomagnetic data generated were evaluated at every local time hour. Diurnal, monthly and Seasonal effects were investigated. The results of the analyses from the magnetic data generated provide a comprehensive understanding of the geomagnetic variation over the region. This research validates the instrument and presents a direct measurement opportunity to capture the influence of local sources. 展开更多

However, Nigeria Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) seems to be just paper work without enforcement or compliance. Assessment of Compliance to Green Building Energy Efficiency Strategies in the Development of Housing Estates in FCC, Abuja Nigeria was carried out. The compliance of estate buildings to BEEC in the study area was assessed;and the aspects of the building energy efficiency strategies with more compliance were determined. Data were mainly from primary sources such as questionnaire survey, interview with key informants and observation. The study population included all estate developers and building construction professionals. Data were gathered from one hundred and fifty (150) building professionals through questionnaire administration. Data collected were analysed using Z score and ANOVA and presented in tables. Results show that only 18% of respondents agreed that building complied with BEEC, and the Z score for positive affirmation is below average score. There is a significant difference in the integration of different energy efficient management strategies in the estates’ construction at 95% confidence level. The integration of measures such as window to wall ratio and window shading’ were significantly higher than other BEEC strategies such as roof insulation and minimal air condition unit (≤EER/COP of 2.8). Thus, the development of estates in FCC Abuja did not achieve energy efficiency. 展开更多

Trends of Temperature and Signature of Solar Activity in Selected Stations in Nigeria

This study investigates the variability and periodicity of minimum temperature, maximum temperature and sunspot number—a solar activity index in selected synoptic stations across Nigeria from 1946 to 2010. Annual and semiannual effect of solar activity on minimum temperature was observed in all the six stations. This was indicated in the occurrence of modal periodicities of 6-month and 12-month observed across the six synoptic stations. The synoptic stations are Sokoto (13.01°N, 5.15°E), Ilorin (8.29°N, 4.35°E), Ikeja (6.35°N, 3.20°E), Enugu (6.28°N, 7.33°E), Port-Harcourt (4.51°N, 7.01°E) and Maiduguri (11.51°N, 13.05°E). Similarly, the trends of inter-decadal va-riability of minimum and maximum temperature show a non-uniformity increase over the analyzed period with a slight decrease before 1960. The long term behavior of minimum and maximum temperature shows a warming rate which ranges from 0.1°C/decade to 0.2°C/ decade across the six stations except for maximum temperature at Ilorin and minimum temperature at Sokoto which is at -0.2°C/decade and 0.3°C/decade respectively. 展开更多

A neural network model of the Global Navigation Satellite System - vertical total electron content (GNSS-VTEC) over Nigeria is developed. A new approach that has been utilized in this work is the consideration of the International Reference Ionosphere's (IRI's) critical plasma frequency (foF2) parameter as an additional neuron for the network's input layer. The work also explores the effects of using various other input layer neurons like distur- bance storm time (DST) and sunspot number. All available GNSS data from the Nigerian Permanent GNSS Network (NIGNET) were used, and these cover the period from 2011 to 2015, for 14 stations. Asides increasing the learning accuracy of the networks, the inclusion of the IRI's foF2 parameter as an input neuron is ideal for making the networks to learn long-term solar cycle variations. This is important especially for regions, like in this work, where the GNSS data is available for less than the period of a solar cycle. The neural network model developed in this work has been tested for time-varying and spatial per- formances. The latest 10% of the GNSS observations from each of the stations were used to test the forecasting ability of the networks, while data from 2 of the stations were entirely used for spatial performance testing. The results show that root-mean-squared-errors were generally less than 8.5 TEC units for all modes of testing performed using the optimal network. When compared to other models, the model developed in this work was observed to reduce the prediction errors to about half those of the NeQuick and the IRI model. 展开更多

In this paper,we present a study on the impact of radiation pressure and circumstellar dust on the motion of a test particle in the framework of the restricted four-body problem under the Manev’s field.We show that the distribution of equilibrium points on the plane of motion is slightly different from that of the classical Newtonian problem.With the aid of the Lyapunov characteristic exponents,we show that the system is sensitive to changes in initial conditions;hence,the orbit of the system is found to be chaotic in the phase space for the given initial conditions.Furthermore,a numerical application of this model to a stellar system(Gliese 667C)is considered,which validates the dependence of the equilibrium points on the mass parameter.We show that the non-collinear equilibrium points of this stellar system are distributed symmetrically about the x-axis,and five of them are linearly stable.The basins of attraction of the system show that the equilibrium points have irregular boundaries,and we use the energy integral and the Manev parameter to illustrate the zero-velocity curves showing the permissible region of motion of the test particle with respect to the Jacobi constant. 展开更多
