Most of the material is figured or cited, and several specimens are types or casts of types. Pterosaurs from UK localities are well represented, but foreign material is also present as original specimens and as high quality casts. The entire collection has been recorded in a database and curatorial improvements have been made, which has improved physical and virtual access to the collection. Although many of the specimens were collected as long ago as the early 1800s, they are still useful today. A full list of Natural History Museum pterosaur specimens is published, for the first time since 1888. 展开更多

This paper discusses cross-cultural understanding of museum collections by looking into transnational audience engagement with the imperial clock collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. The audience research took place in three sites:the Hong Kong Science Museum, the Palace Museum in Beijing, and the Science Museum in London.Audience data were collected using qualitative methods, such as intercept interviews, focus groups, and informal group discussions with non-specialist and specialist audiences across the three locations. The qualitative samples suggest that UK-China audiences draw from different cultural references when they engage with the unique"singsongs"in the imperial clock collection.Despite the divergence of cultural connections made across audiences in the UK and China,it is consistent in the audience data that the appeal of the clocks is reinforced by seeing their movement. The data also indicate a desire to connect with human stories behind the creation, trade, and conservation of singsongs, and expectations for a digital resource that is visually captivating and offers additional insights into the singsongs, such as the demonstration, mechanism, and backstory of the automatons. This paper concludes with a reflection on the implications of audience data for the interpretation strategy of a London-based exhibition featuring the singsongs, and considerations for the development of a digital experience about the imperial horological collections that speaks to audiences across the UK and China. 展开更多

The aim of this paper is to research museum audience and its expectations, experiences, and influence on museum's practices at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Finland. The common idea is that museum pedagogy as a word creates easily an image of dusty, silent, and serious moment when the audience is forced to follow a lecture or a guided tour The author's research questions are: (I) Museum as an institution--what are the limits and possibilities to create highlights for audience work? (2) How to look and talk about art for different audiences--also for non-visitors? And (3) How can museum combine the knowledge of results and new technology to create more interesting approach for its audiences? Participants of the author's research are teachers, students, senior citizens, and colleagues from other museums. Besides the literature the author uses mixed methods by combining visitor questionnaires (made during last ten years) and qualitative research made by narrative methods. Interviews have been made by H4 recorder. The qualitative analysis is going to be made by Atlas.ti. The results will finally be analyzed in 2014. Until now, it has become clear that museum experience mostly starts from the web pages. What can we offer, how to give value to our museum audience? 展开更多

Museums offer a lifelong edutainment environment with flexible choices for the public and provide fruitful interdisciplinary learning resources to support competency-based education. However, the lack of proper scaffolding and supports in museums negatively affect learner learning.Further, the individual differences need to be considered to effectively support the diverse learners learning in museums. In this study,an innovative learning model to support competency education for lifelong learning in museums is proposed.A game-based learning service named CoboFun that offers various types of problem-solving activities was developed to facilitate learners’interaction with exhibits and their peers in the museum. To examine the service design of CoboFun,learners’perceptions were evaluated and the differences in their cognitive styles were examined(Field Independent(FI)and Field Dependent(FD)).The results showed that both FI and FD learners enjoyed learning with CoboFun but that flexible learning tools needed to be provided to satisfy the different needs for the learners with different cognitive styles. 展开更多

Biao Hu was one of the eight famous traditional crafts in the late Qing dynasty. This skill involved decorating the interiors of ancient buildings such as ceilings, walls, and windows and creating burial objects. It was primarily used for wooden buildings in northern China during the early Qing dynasty. For example, there is white-patterned wallpaper in the Forbidden City utilizing both traditional and nontraditional patterns. Moreover, there was wallpaper with a special pattern in the Lodge of the Bamboo Fragrance(Zhuxiang Guan). Its structure and composition were studied via morphological observations and spectral analyses, the pigments and dyes were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrum(UPLC-MS).Traditional technology and exchanges between China and the West were discussed by the study of patterned wallpapers in other buildings of the Forbidden City. 展开更多

The present article is an overview of basic (potential) biological pests of some "storage" commodities (with emphasis on the protection of objects of cultural heritage) as well as methods used for their detection. In the final section, a modular system of the ongoing assessment of the environmental characteristics of depositaries and exhibitions (including "biological") is briefly presented; its advantage is the possibility of on-line monitoring of the evaluated parameters (temperature, humidity, lighting, etc.) including the detection of presence of crawling and airborne insects. 展开更多
