The wind-assisted propulsion system is becoming one of the most popular and efficient ways to reduce both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission from the ships.In this study,several analyses have been carried out on a model of bulk carrier fitted with five rigid sails with a 180°rotating mechanism for maximum usage of wind power and a telescopic reefing mechanism for folding it during berthing.The stability of the ship has been verified through the calculations of initial stability,static stability,and dynamic stability through the fulfillment of the weather criterion using MAXSURF software.The structural analysis of the sail was carried out in ANSYS static structural module.Several flow simulations were carried out in ANSYS fluent module to predict the thrusts produced by the sails at different apparent wind angles,which would in turn reduce the thrust required from the propeller.In this way,the brake horse powers required for different sail arrangements were analyzed to find out a guideline for this wind propulsion system to generate better powering performances.To consider drift and yaw effect on propulsion system,an MMG mathematical model–based simulation was carried out for different drift angles of motion of the ship considering hard sail–based wind loads.Through these analyses,it has been found out that the hard sail–based wind-assisted propulsion system in some cases have produced a reduction of more than 30%brake power in straight ahead motion and around 20%reduction in case of drifting ships compared to the model having no sails. 展开更多

Bus systems provide a versatile form of public transportation with the flexibility to serve a variety of access needs throughout an urban area. Efficient operation of the public transport is a key factor for the improvement of living condition in Dhaka city. Transport service performance should be assessed from the passengers’ perspectives to evaluate these perceptions in transportation planning. The exploration of service quality of bus is essential in order to provide a better service in future. The objective of this research is to access overall customer satisfaction in public bus transport of Dhaka city. A questionnaire survey was conducted in five locations in Dhaka city. Bus users’ satisfaction was analyzed by discrete choice logit model towards quality, reliability, safety and security and service provided by buses functioning in Dhaka city. The result indicated that more than half of the respondents believed that the present condition of bus service is not satisfactory. In case of the quality of buses, people think that the body and sitting arrangement of the buses are uncomfortable. Regarding the safety and security condition, main three reasons of dissatisfaction of passengers’ are unsafe driving practices, poor boarding and alighting facilities and lack of law enforcing agencies surveillance. Reasons which make the service unsatisfactory include irregular service provided by buses, regular overcrowding, lack of good standard buses and lack of cleanliness. In spite of these negative views, users’ possessed a positive attitude for buses which is the low travel cost. 展开更多

The fast growth in the size and difficulty of nuclear power plant in the 1970s produced an interest in smaller, modest designs that are intrinsically safe over the usage of design features. With the development of nuclear technology, there is the need for revolution in the Maritime sector, especially the advance marine propulsion. In current years, numerous reactor manufacturers are dynamically improving small modular reactor designs with even superior use of safety features. Several designs integrate the ultimate in greater safety. They totally remove specific accident initiators from the design. Other design features benefit to reduce different types of accident or help to mitigate the accident’s consequences. Although some safety features are mutual to maximum SMR designs, irrespective of the coolant technology, other features are specific to liquid-metal cooled, water, gas, or SMR designs. Results: There have been more reactor concepts investigated in the marine propulsion area by different assemblies and research laboratories than in the power generation field, and much can be learned from their experience for land applications. The extensive use of safety features in SMRs potential to make these power plants extremely vigorous, protecting both the public and the investor. Conclusion: For these two considerations, it is recognized that a nuclear reactor is the ideal engine for naval advanced propulsion. Considering the inhomogeneous or heterogeneous background, we have demonstrated that if the background and the half-immersed object are both non-absorbing, the transferred photon momentum to the pulled object can be considered as the one of Minkowski exactly at the interface. In contrast, the presence of loss inside matter, either in the half-immersed object or in the background, causes optical pushing of the object. Our analysis suggests that for half-immersed plasmonic or lossy dielectric, the transferred momentum of photon can mathematically be modeled as the type of Minkowski and also of Abraham. However, according to a final critical analysis, the idea of Abraham momentum transfer has been rejected. Hence,an obvious question arises: whence the Abraham momentum? It is demonstrated that though the transferred momentum to a half-immersed Mie object(lossy or lossless) can better be considered as the Minkowski momentum, Lorentz force analysis suggests that the momentum of a photon traveling through the continuous background, however, can be modeled as the type of Abraham. Finally, as an interesting sidewalk, a machine learning based system has been developed to predict the time-averaged force within a very short time avoiding time-consuming full wave simulation. 展开更多

Impact of Ambient Temperature on Electricity Demand of Dhaka City of Bangladesh

Of the total population of 160 million, only 40 percent has the access of using electricity. Dhaka city consumes about 40 - 45 percent of the total electricity generation of the country. This study reports the trend of electricity use in the Dhaka city with emphasis on the impact of changing temperature due to urbanization and weather change. Hourly data of electricity demand of Dhaka city and the temperature profile of the city for a period of thirty months have been used for this study. To relate weather data like temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, atmospheric pressure, dew point and visibility etc. with electricity demand of the city about 16,508 data between 2011 and 2017 have been considered. A statistical regression has been done to establish a relation between them. From this study it is found that reduction of only 1&degC air temperature could save 81 MV of electricity consumption in Dhaka city. A time series forecast has been done to estimate probable temperature change and subsequent electricity consumption up to year 2020. From the study it has been established that the temperature dependence of electricity consumption in Dhaka city is about 75%. 展开更多

Study of Structural, Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Manganese Doped Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles with Non-stoichiometric Composition

The nanoparticles of Co1+xMnxFe2-xO4 (0≤x ≤ 0.5) ferrite system are synthesized by solid-state reaction route using planetary ball milling technique to investigate structural, electrical and magnetic properties. The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the inverse spinel structure with residual oxide phases. Three distinct regions of frequency response on dielectric constant are observed Co1.2sMn0.5Fe1.75O4 as determined by the Wayne Kerr Impedance Analyzer. The first two regions of frequency response 1.13-4.5 MHz and 4.5-6.5 MHz exhibit the normal behavior but the last region 6.5-10.5 MHz indicates its anomalous behavior due to concurrent contribution of O^2-, Fe^3+, Co^2+ and Mn^3+ ions in the relaxation process for sintering effects (sintered at 700℃). This anomalous behavior is found to be pronounced and significant for the sample of composition Co1.25Mn0.25Fe1.75O4, which may be suitable to be used in the frequency band filter over wide range of frequencies. The single peak of imaginary part of dielectric constant (ε") indicates that the conduction process in this sample is due to the grain boundary resistance. The pronounced increase of capacitance (C) as observed from 100 ℃ to 125 ~C in temperature dependent measurement (30-125℃) is expected to eause from the change of polarization across the grain boundary due to redistribution of ions by the thermal agitation. The variation of resistance (R) with temperature (30-125 ℃) is found to exhibit semieonducting behavior that resulted from the p-type carriers (Co^2+/Co^3+). A significant increase of Z from 105 ℃ with the increase of temperature indicates the signature of phase transition from ferrimagnetic-to-ferromagnetic, which may be ascribed to the increase of Co content. The appearance of the single semicircular arc in the Cole-Cole plot may be attributed to the contribution of grain boundary resistance and correspond to the parallel equivalent circuit of resistor-capacitor (R-C) combination with single relaxation time. Saturation magnetization of Co1.25Mn0.25Fe1.75O4 and Co1.375Mn0.375Fe1.625O4 is found to be greater than the literature value (61.5 emu/g) of un-doped cobalt ferrite in the measurement of their initial magnetization using Lakeshore vibrating sample magnetometer. The negative real part of AC permeability of Co1.5Mn0.5Fe1.5O4 signifies the diamagnetic behavior in the frequency range 0.13-25.2 MHz and expected to cause from the formation of magnetic dipoles opposite to the applied field due to Mn^2+ in the B site. The samples are expected to be suitable for dielectric heating and high frequency applications. 展开更多

This paper presents a comparative analysis of different parameters such as enthalpy, moderator temperature, moderator density, flow velocity, pressure, and fuel temperature profile at the fuel pin cell level of PWR. Moreover, in this paper pitches to fuel pin radius ratio are varied from 2.3 to 4. The methods and implementation strategy are such that the coupled neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analysis is executed in a fully one dimensional (1D) manner. The thermal hydraulic is based on moderator/coolant mass and enthalpy equation together with one group diffusion equation for fuel pin. Modelling of fuel pin cell and subchannel is executed in two steps. First, the governing equations are derived assuming that all the parameters appearing in the equations are temperature independent. Fuel pin centerline temperature and radially averaged temperature equations are derived from Fourier laws of thermal conductivity. Finally, diffusion coefficient, fission cross-section and absorbing cross-section are evaluated with respect to the fuel pin temperature. The outcome will be helpful for further neutronics and thermal analysis of PWR. Thermal hydraulics parameter varies the maximum 30 percentage from the lowermost value. 展开更多

Aluminum based metal matrix composites were fabricated using stir casting where silicon carbide and alumina were the reinforcements. Different types of properties (physical-density, mechanical-tensile, hardness, chemical-corrosion etc.) were measured and compared with base metals/alloys. The properties were significantly varied. The highest density was obtained for pure aluminium with 5% Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> whereas the lowest was obtained for AA-4032 alloy. The highest hardness was obtained for AA-4032 with 5% Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> whereas the lowest was obtained for pure Al with 5% Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. The highest strength was obtained for AA-6061 with 5% coarse SiC whereas the lowest was obtained for pure Al. The highest impact strength was obtained for AA-4032 with 5% Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> whereas the lowest was obtained for AA-6061. The corrosion resistance of all composites was lower than that of the base materials. 展开更多

The study states the development and characterization of Calcium-based biocomposites: Hydroxyapatite (HAP), and PVA-Gelatin-HAP films. For the preparation of Calcium-based biocomposites, an unconventional source, the waste material calcite stone, was used as calcium raw material, and by the process of calcination, calcium oxide was synthesized. From calcium oxide, HAP was prepared by chemical precipitation method, which was later added in different proportions to PVA-Gelatin solution and finally dried to form biocomposite films. Then the different properties of PVA/Gelatin/HAP composite, for instance, chemical, mechanical, thermal, and swelling properties due to the incorporation of various proportions of HAP in PVA-Gelatin solution, were investigated. The characterization of the HAP was conducted by X-ray Diffraction Analysis, and the characterization of HAP-PVA-Gelatin composites was done by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Thermomechanical Analysis, Tensile test, Thermogravimetric Differential Thermal Analysis, and Swelling Test. The produced biocomposite films might have applications in orthopedic implants, drug delivery, bone tissue engineering, and wound healing. 展开更多

Integrating farmers’perceptions and empirical climate data to assess agricultural productivity and food security in coastal Bangladesh

Coastal Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to various impacts of climate change,including rising temperatures,unpredictable precipitation,cyclones,droughts,and saltwater intrusion.These factors collectively threaten agricultural productivity and food security.This study examines the relationship between farmers’perceptions and observable climatic trends,with a focus on the sustainability of food systems and the promotion of adaptable farming techniques in Bagerhat District,Bangladesh.A mixed-methods strategy was employed,incorporating household surveys(a total of 110 purposively selected farmers),focus group discussions,key informant interviews,and climatic data analysis.The Mann-Kendall test,Sen’s slope estimator,precipitation concentration index(PCI),and standardized rainfall anomaly index(SRAI)were employed to analyze climate trends from 1991 to 2020.The findings showed that more than 70.00%of respondents indicated that summers were becoming warmer,over 50.00%reported that winters were becoming colder,and 63.00%stated that yearly precipitation was decreasing.Farmers reported an increase in flood occurrences and a decline in the predictability of precipitation.Between 2011 and 2019,the output of most rice varieties decreased,with the exception of high-yielding Aman rice and hybrid Boro rice.The results also showed that 60.00%of respondents reported experiencing salinity intrusion,and 57.00%attributed significant yield losses to salinity.Planting salt-tolerant rice varieties(such as BRRI Dhan 67 and Binadhan-10),practicing homestead vegetable cultivation,and moderately integrating shrimp aquaculture were also common adaptive measures.To improve long-term food security in coastal Bangladesh,we suggest growing more salt-tolerant crop varieties,promoting vertical and homestead gardening,enhancing seed systems that are resilient to climate change,and educating farmers on the use of climate-smart farming methods.This study highlights the importance of aligning farmers’perceptions with observed climatic data to design effective adaptation strategies.The findings of this study can guide policy-makers and development practitioners in strengthening climate-resilient agriculture and ensuring long-term food security in coastal Bangladesh. 展开更多

A partially automated evaluation system has been conducted and performed at the ground level. Automation of such system with the inclusion of artificial intelligence is a much required process. This papers puts focus on designing and developing an AI-based small arms firing evaluation systems in the context of military environment. Initially image processing techniques are used to calculate the target firing score. Additionally, firing errors during the shooting have also been detected using a machine learning algorithm. However, consistency in firing requires an abundance of practice and updated analysis of the previous results. Accuracy and precision are the basic requirements of a good shooter. To test the shooting skill of combatants, firing practices are held by the military personnel at frequent intervals that include 'grouping' and 'shoot to hit' scores. Shortage of skilled personnel and lack of personal interest leads to an inefficient evaluation of the firing standard of a firer. This paper introduces a system that will automatically be able to fetch the target data and evaluate the standard based on the fuzzy systems.Moreover it will be able to predict the shooter performance based on linear regression techniques.Thereby, it compares with recognized patterns to analyze the individual expertise and suggest improvements based on previous values. The paper is developed on a Small Arms Firing Skill Evaluation System, which makes the whole process of firing and target evaluation faster with better accuracy. The experiment has been conducted on real-time scenarios considering the military field and shows a promising result to evaluate the system automatically. 展开更多

It is developed with the nominal composition of Fe735-Cu1-Ta3-Si13.5-B9 by single-roller melt spinning technique in air. The dielectric constant and loss factor have been measured both for as cast and annealed samples using Agilent Impedance analyzer. They are found to decrease with frequency up to 10 MHz and remain constant afterwards. The decrease of dielectric constant and loss factor with frequency is due to ceasing of orientational polarizability. Their constancy is owing to presence of only electronic contribution to its polarizability above 10 MHz. Three distinct regions (1-4 MHz, 4-10 MHz and 10 MHz-1 GHz) also noticed from its frequency dependence, which might make it useful in switching and sensor devices. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant and loss factor maintain inverse relationship: (1) dielectric constant increases, and (2) loss factor decreases with annealing temperature for structural relaxation due to thermal agitation. 展开更多

The data are conducted using the plain twisted tape insert with five different twist ratios respectively. The range of Reynolds number is considered under a uniform heat flux condition. In the case of simulation, the tapes are made from a stainless steel strip with a thickness of 2 mm. A tubular pipe with 850mm U-loop length and twist length of 800 mm each is considered in our study for simulation. Water is used as working fluids inside the tube for our simulation. The simulation results demonstrate that the important heat transfer parameters including Nusselt number (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal performance index (η) are gradually increased with the increment of the twist ratio and reached at the saturated level while twist ratio is 3.5,?afterward the thermal properties are decreased. 展开更多

The main goal of this research is to develop and apply a robust Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs)model for predicting the characteristics of the osmotically drying treated potato and apple samples as a model heat-sensitive product in vacuum contact dryer.Concentrated salt and sugar solutions were used as the osmotic solutions at 27◦C.Series of experiments were performed at various temperatures of 35◦C,40◦C,and 55◦C for conduction heat input under vacuum(−760 mm Hg)condition.Some experiments were also performed in a pure vacuum without heat addition.Dimensionless moisture content(DMC),effective moisture diffusivity,and mass flux were considered as the performance parameters in this study.Results revealed that the osmotic dehydration using a concentrated sugar solution shows a higher reduction in the initial moisture loss of 19.87%compared to 5.3%in the salt solution.Furthermore,a significant enhancement of drying performance of about 27%in DMC was observed for both samples at vacuum and 40◦C compared to pure vacuum drying conditions.Using the experimental data,a robust artificial neural network(ANN)was proposed to describe the osmotic dehydration’s behavior on the drying process.The ANN model outputs are the dimensionless moisture contents(DMC),the diffusivity,and the mass flux.Whereas the ANN inputs were the drying time,the percent of sugar solution,and the percent of salt solution.For the ANN apple’s model,the minimum root mean square error(RMSE)values were 0.0261,0.0349 and 0.0406,for DMC,diffusivity,and mass flux,respectively.Whereas the best correlation coefficients of the above three parameters’determination values were 0.9909,0.9867 and 0.9744,respectively.For the ANN potato’s model,the minimum RMSE values were 0.0124,0.0140 and 0.0333,for DMC,diffusivity,and mass flux,respectively.And the best correlation coefficients of the parameters’values were found 0.9969,0.9968 and 0.9736,respectively.Accordingly,the ANN model’s prediction has a perfect agreement with the experimental dataset,which confirmed the ANN model’s accuracy. 展开更多

Many developing cities already initiated the implementation, while the process has a wide variation in both quality and quantity. The objective of this study is to evaluate the justification of speed humps in urban roads and also to recommend a guideline for installation of speed humps as a traffic calming device in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. It was found that there are vast variations in the implementation, while general public also express an immense disparity of perception about devices quality and suitability and their agreement. Lesson learned from Dhaka City shows that selecting an appropriate placement and dimension of the traffic humps is an urgent requirement to be solved by government by providing standards, guidelines, and policy when there is an initiative to implement or improve traffic calming application. 展开更多

Following the foundation failure of a building, with an aim of economical solution to strengthen other existing buildings of the same project, a new arrangement was implemented experimentally to test the adequacy of load bearing capacity of a few selected cast-in-situ RCC (reinforced cement concrete) pile groups without demolishing the existing buildings. In this test, the column bottom of an existing building was removed by the help of scaffolding and after that a frame system consisting tension piles and hollow beam was constructed over the pile cap of the to be tested pile group. The load was tested by the help of hydraulic jack system and the constructed frame system. This paper contains the detailed plan, arrangement and method of the test with illustrations. The deflection and loading data analysis is also included which was performed to determine the outcome of the test. Through this test method the appropriate assessment of capacity of pile group of existing building could be done successfully and in result the structure could be saved by only super structure retrofitting. 展开更多

The usage of private cars cannot be stopped by charging and the town is not encouraged by quality public transport. It is impossible to enforce congestion prices here in line with traditional cordon pricing systems since the region uses unusual land patterns. However, the </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">current project Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 6, which will be built by </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">2021, provides the prospect of congestion pricing. A price and optimum approach were established for this article. The congestion price is only payable for the </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">segments and is accessible for private cars under this system. Two urban </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">street segments along the MRT route were selected for the study and congestion toll for a private car is estimated for each segment separately. The sum of the toll in monetary terms is determined using certain associated parameters from the discrepancy from the actual Level of Service (LOS) travel time and traffic flow to the desired LOS. Short Message Service(SMS)is a widely used and cost-effective communication medium that has unfortunately become a frequent target for unsolicited messages-commonly known as SMS spam.With the rapid adoption of smartphones and increased Internet connectivity,SMS spam has emerged as a prevalent threat.Spammers have recognized the critical role SMS plays in today’s modern communication,making it a prime target for abuse.As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve,the volume of SMS spam has increased substantially in recent years.Moreover,the unstructured format of SMS data creates significant challenges for SMS spam detection,making it more difficult to successfully combat spam attacks.In this paper,we present an optimized and fine-tuned transformer-based Language Model to address the problem of SMS spam detection.We use a benchmark SMS spam dataset to analyze this spam detection model.Additionally,we utilize pre-processing techniques to obtain clean and noise-free data and address class imbalance problem by leveraging text augmentation techniques.The overall experiment showed that our optimized fine-tuned BERT(Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers)variant model RoBERTa obtained high accuracy with 99.84%.To further enhance model transparency,we incorporate Explainable Artificial Intelligence(XAI)techniques that compute positive and negative coefficient scores,offering insight into the model’s decision-making process.Additionally,we evaluate the performance of traditional machine learning models as a baseline for comparison.This comprehensive analysis demonstrates the significant impact language models can have on addressing complex text-based challenges within the cybersecurity landscape. 展开更多

The Payra is a tidal river with meandering planform in which around 6.5 km long landmass is formed naturally during the last 40 years that is selected for an establishment by the Government of Bangladesh. However, the site experiences intermittent erosion at several locations and poses threat to the newly developed infrastructures. In the present study, a Rouse type simple model is used to estimate the equilibrium profiles of suspended sediment concentration below which the system is likely to be eroded and regarded as “Sediment Deficit System, SDS” and above which the system is likely to be sedimented and regarded as “Sediment Surplus System, SSS”. The model was then tested at the study reach using the measured flow-sediment data complemented by field observation and Landsat images-based planform analysis. The analysis revealed that the residual flow-sediment regime in the study site is representing the “sediment deficit system” that causes continuous threat for erosion throughout the tidal cycles. Therefore, the availability of new landmass should not be the only criterion for the quick selection of a project site, and residual flow-sediment regime needs to consider as an additional parameter for such decision-making process. 展开更多
