The integration of physics-based modelling and data-driven artificial intelligence(AI)has emerged as a transformative paradigm in computational mechanics. This perspective reviews the development and current status of AI-empowered frameworks, including data-driven methods,physics-informed neural networks, and neural operators. While these approaches have demonstrated significant promise, challenges remain in terms of robustness, generalisation, and computational efficiency. We delineate four promising research directions:(1)Modular neural architectures inspired by traditional computational mechanics,(2)physics informed neural operators for resolution-invariant operator learning,(3)intelligent frameworks for multiphysics and multiscale biomechanics problems,and(4)structural optimisation strategies based on physics constraints and reinforcement learning. These directions represent a shift toward foundational frameworks that combine the strengths of physics and data, opening new avenues for the modelling, simulation, and optimisation of complex physical systems. 展开更多

In this research,we introduce an innovative approach that combines the Continuum Damage Mechanics-Finite Element Method(CDM-FEM)with the Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO)-based technique,to predict the Medium-Low-Cycle Fatigue(MLCF)life of perforated structures.First, fatigue tests are carried out on three center-perforated structures, aiming to assess their fatigue life under various strengthening conditions. These tests reveal significant variations in fatigue life, accompanied by an examination of crack initiation through the analysis of fatigue fracture surfaces.Second,an innovative fatigue life prediction methodology is applied to perforated structures, which not only forecasts the initiation of fatigue cracks but also traces the progression of damage within these structures. It leverages an elastoplastic constitutive model integrated with damage and a damage evolution model under cyclic loads. The accuracy of this approach is validated by comparison with test results, falling within the three times error band. Finally,we explore the impact of various strengthening techniques, including cross-sectional reinforcement and cold expansion,on the fatigue life and damage evolution of these structures. This is achieved through an in-depth comparative analysis of both experimental data and computational predictions, which provides valuable insights into the behavior of perforated structures under fatigue conditions in practical applications. 展开更多

Pneumatic artificial muscles(PAMs)can generate multimodal movements,e.g.,linear contraction/extension,spiral torsion, and bending motions.Among these motions, contraction and extension movements can be achieved using linear PAMs(LPAMs)designed to mimic human skeletal muscle.LPAMs have considerable potential for wearable applications and can be integrated into soft wearable robotic systems.Due to their inherent compliance, excellent human-robot interaction, safety, and low cost,LPAMs are considered potential alternatives as actuator components in the construction of wearable robots. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the bio-inspired design of LPAMs and their wearable applications. The biomechanics of human skeletal muscle, including anatomy, morphology, and biomechanical characterization,is analyzed to provide design inspirations for LPAMs and determine the assistance requirements of LPAM-based wearable robots.Herein,LPAMs are classified into four categories based on their structural shapes, including cylindrical-shaped muscles,flat-shaped muscles,fold-shaped muscles, and muscles with other shapes. In addition, this review provides an overview of the diverse physical interfaces utilized in wearable robots and presents a comparative analysis of the actuation characteristics of LPAMs and the assistance performance of LPAM-based wearable robots. This analysis was conducted in consideration of several key metrics, including the contraction ratio, maximum force, specific force, response frequency, assistive torque/bodyweight,and net metabolic cost. Finally, this review summarizes the ongoing challenges and future research directions. 展开更多

Problems involving coupled multiple space and time scales offer a real challenge for conventional frame-works of either particle or continuum mechanics. In this paper, four cases studies (shear band formation in bulk metallic glasses, spallation resulting from stress wave, interaction between a probe tip and sample, the simulation of nanoindentation with molecular statistical thermodynamics) are provided to illustrate the three levels of trans-scale problems (problems due to various physical mechanisms at macro-level, problems due to micro-structural evolution at macro/micro-level, problems due to the coupling of atoms/ molecules and a finite size body at micro/nano-level) and their formulations. Accordingly, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, coupled trans-scale equations and simultaneous solutions, and trans-scale algorithms based on atomic/molecular interaction are suggested as the three possible modes of trans-scale mechanics. 展开更多

Three recent breakthroughs due to AI in arts and science serve as motivation:An award winning digital image, protein folding, fast matrix multiplication. Many recent developments in artificial neural networks, particularly deep learning(DL),applied and relevant to computational mechanics(solid,fluids,finite-element technology)are reviewed in detail. Both hybrid and pure machine learning(ML)methods are discussed.Hybrid methods combine traditional PDE discretizations with ML methods either(1)to help model complex nonlinear constitutive relations,(2)to nonlinearly reduce the model order for efficient simulation(turbulence),or(3)to accelerate the simulation by predicting certain components in the traditional integration methods.Here,methods(1)and(2)relied on Long-Short-Term Memory(LSTM)architecture, with method(3)relying on convolutional neural networks.Pure ML methods to solve(nonlinear)PDEs are represented by Physics-Informed Neural network(PINN)methods, which could be combined with attention mechanism to address discontinuous solutions. Both LSTM and attention architectures, together with modern and generalized classic optimizers to include stochasticity for DL networks, are extensively reviewed.Kernel machines, including Gaussian processes, are provided to sufficient depth for more advanced works such as shallow networks with infinite width. Not only addressing experts, readers are assumed familiar with computational mechanics, but not with DL,whose concepts and applications are built up from the basics, aiming at bringing first-time learners quickly to the forefront of research.History and limitations of AI are recounted and discussed, with particular attention at pointing out misstatements or misconceptions of the classics, even in well-known references.Positioning and pointing control of a large-deformable beam is given as an example. 展开更多

The Micro- and Nano-mechanics Working Group of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics organized a forum to discuss the perspectives, trends, and directions in mechanics of heterogeneous materials in January 2010. The international journal, Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, is de- voted to all fields of solid mechanics and relevant disciplines in science, technology, and engineering, with a balanced coverage on analytical, experimental, numerical and applied investigations. On the occasion of the 30TM anniversary of Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, its editor-in-chief, Professor Q.S. Zheng invited some of the forum participants to review the state-of-the-art of mechanics of heterogeneous solids, with a particular emphasis on the recent research development results of Chinese scientists. Their reviews are organized into five research areas as reported in different sections of this paper. ~I firstly brings in fo- cus on micro- and nano-mechanics, with regards to several selective topics, including multiscale coupled models and computational methods, nanocrystal superlattices, surface effects, micromechanical damage mechanics, and microstructural evolution of metals and shape memory alloys. ~II shows discussions on multifield coupled mechanical phenomena, e.g., multi-fields actuations of liquid crystal polymer networks, mechanical behavior of materials under radiations, and micromechanics of heterogeneous materials. In ~III, we mainly address the multiscale mechanics of biological nanocomposites, biological adhesive surface mechanics, wetting and dewetting phenomena on microstructured solid surfaces. The phononic crystals and manipulation of elastic waves were elaborated in ~IV. Finally, we conclude with a series of perspectives on solid mechanics. This review will set a primary goal of future science research and engineering application on solid mechanics with the effort of social and economic development. 展开更多

The freeze-thaw(FT)behavior of porous materials(PMs)involves the coupling of the thermo-hydromechanical(THM)processes and is significantly influenced by the microstructure. However, modeling FT in unsaturated PMs remains an open issue, and the influence of microstructure is not yet fully understood. To address these challenges,we propose a THM model for FT in PMs that considers microstructure and variable air content. In this work,a non-equilibrium thermodynamic approach is proposed to capture ice formation/melting,the microstructure is accounted for utilizing micromechanics, and the FT processes in air-entrained PMs are formulated within the proposed THM model. This model incorporates variable air void characteristics,e.g.air content, spacing factor, specific surface area, and supercooled water-filled regimes, and distinguishes the roles of air voids between freezing and thawing. The FT behaviors, including deformation, ice formation/melting,spacing factor, and pore water pressure evolutions, are focused.Comparisons with experimental results, confirm the capability of the present model. The results demonstrate the effects of variable air voids on the FT behavior of air-entrained PMs.The findings reveal that assuming fixed air void characteristics can lead to underestimation of pore pressure and deformation, particularly at low air content.Additionally, air voids act as cryo-pumps during freezing and when the cooling temperature stabilizes.During thawing, air voids supply gas to the melting sites(i.e.“gas escape”),preventing further significant deformation reduction. These results can provide novel insights for understanding the frost damage of PMs. 展开更多

Surface energy is essential to the understanding of micro-mechanics for heterogeneous composites. To investigate the effective elasticity and fracture behaviors,we derive an effective surface energy based on Eshelby’s equivalent inclusion theory.Within a unified theoretical framework, the effective surface energy predicts the fundamentals from elasticity to fracture, and reproduces classical homogenization methods and phase field models. The influences of elastic heterogeneity and size effects are analyzed in depth.Using the surface energy formulation,a computational model is developed by minimizing the deviation of effective elastic modulus from experimental observation. To validate our theoretical prediction, numerical simulations under tension and shear loadings for monodisperse and bidisperse particulate systems are performed, which agree well with experimental evidences.Local debondings nucleate and initiate at the inclusion-matrix interfaces, then develop into multiple interacting cracks and shear bands, thereby greatly promotes the process of fracture. 展开更多

Continuum mechanics, just as the name implies, deals with the mechanics problems of all continua, whose physical (or mechanical) properties are assumed to vary continuously in the spaces they occupy. Continuum mechanics may be seen as the symbol of modem mechanics, which differs greatly from current physics, the two often being mixed up by people and even sci- entists. In this short paper, I will first try to give an illustration on the differences between (modem) mechanics and physics, in my personal view, and then focus on some important current research activities in continuum mechanics, attempting to identify its path to the near future. We can see that continuum mechanics, while having a dominating impact on engineering design in the 20th century, also plays a pivotal role in modem science, and is much closer to physics, chemistry, biology, etc. than ever before. 展开更多

This paper presents the variational physics-informed neural network(VPINN)as an effective tool for static structural analyses. One key innovation includes the construction of the neural network solution as an admissible function of the boundary-value problem(BVP),which satisfies all geometrical boundary conditions. We then prove that the admissible neural network solution also satisfies natural boundary conditions, and therefore all boundary conditions, when the stationarity condition of the variational principle is met.Numerical examples are presented to show the advantages and effectiveness of the VPINN in comparison with the physics-informed neural network(PINN).Another contribution of the work is the introduction of Gaussian approximation of the Dirac delta function, which significantly enhances the ability of neural networks to handle singularities,as demonstrated by the examples with concentrated support conditions and loadings. It is hoped that these structural examples are so convincing that engineers would adopt the VPINN method in their structural design practice. 展开更多

A modified molecular structural mechanics method, based on molecular mechanics and similar to the finite element method, was developed. The energy of a system was expressed by the force field functions of the molecular mechanics. Under the small deformation assumption and by the principle of minimum potential energy, the system function was established. The properties of tension and bending of single-walled carbon nanotubes were analyzed. The Young's modulus is about 0.36 TPa nm, which agrees perfectly with the results of previous analysis by other researchers. It is found, for the first time, that the Young's moduli, for Zigzag nanotubes, are different from each other when the system energy was expressed as the sum of two or three individual energy terms in molecular mechanics. Whereas, the Young's moduli were the same for the Armchair nanotubes. It is found, when simulating the bending, that the deflections are closer to the theoretical ones, of the classical elasticity, when the diameter of the carbon nanotube increases. 展开更多

This paper investigates the adhesive nanocontact behavior of an elastic halfplane indented by a rigid cylindrical indenter, incorporating the simultaneous effects of surface elasticity, couple stresses, and adhesion. The free surface of the half-plane is modeled by the Steigmann-Ogden surface elasticity theory, while the bulk material behavior is described by the classical couple-stress elasticity theory. The adhesion at the contact interface is characterized by the Maugis-Dugdale(MD)adhesive contact model.Building on the fundamental nonclassical Flamant solution, the governing equations and boundary conditions of the nanocontact problem are reformulated into a system of triple integral equations. These equations are solved numerically by the Gauss-Chebyshev quadratures in combination with an iterative algorithm. The validation against the existing literature confirms the accuracy and robustness of the proposed solution methodology.Comprehensive parametric studies are performed to elucidate the critical roles of surface elasticity and couple stresses in adhesive nanocontact. The numerical results provide insights into the complex interactions among surface,couple-stress,and adhesive effects.Specifically, the interplay between the surface and adhesive effects is predominantly competitive, while the interaction between the couple stresses and adhesion exhibits an intricate nature. The findings highlight the necessity of simultaneously considering surface elasticity, couple stresses, and adhesion in nanoindentation analyses to achieve accurate predictions of material responses. 展开更多
