In order to study the effect of two-stage injection on two-stroke diesel engines, a well characterized research engine equipped with electronically controlled common rail system and scavenging system was constructed. ...In order to study the effect of two-stage injection on two-stroke diesel engines, a well characterized research engine equipped with electronically controlled common rail system and scavenging system was constructed. Through analysis of combustion and emissions, two-stage injection shows its advantages. Compared with the standard injection, it produces less emissions, while compared with single early injection, it expands engine operation range. Further experiments were carried out to study the influence of several injection control parameters on two-stage injection. The fuel in the first injection is used for forming homogeneous mixture. The fuel in the second injection keeps combustion, and it is the main source of smoke emissions. NO_x is formed in both combustion process caused by these two injections, and there is an optimum fuel allocation ration to produce minimum NO_x. The cylinder pressure decreases, and the combustion is depressed with the increasing of scavenging pressure. By optimizing the injection control parameters of two-stage injection, NO_x and smoke can be reduced beyond 30% simultaneously.展开更多

Identification of multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) linear time invariant (LTI) and linear time variant (LTV--due to damage) systems based on Time-frequency (TF) techniques--such as short-time Fourier transform (STFT), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), and wavelets--is proposed. STFT, EMD, and wavelet methods developed to date are reviewed in detail. In addition a Hilbert transform (HT) approach to determine frequency and damping is also presented. In this paper, STFT, EMD, HT and wavelet techniques are developed for decomposition of free vibration response of MDOF systems into their modal components. Once the modal components are obtained, each one is processed using Hilbert transform to obtain the modal frequency and damping ratios. In addition, the ratio of modal components at different degrees of freedom facilitate determination of mode shape. In cases with output only modal identification using ambient/random response, the random decrement technique is used to obtain free vibration response. The advantage of TF techniques is that they arc signal based; hence, can be used for output only modal identification. A three degree of freedom 1:10 scale model test structure is used to validate the proposed output only modal identification techniques based on STFT, EMD, HT, wavelets. Both measured free vibration and forced vibration (white noise) response are considered. The secondary objective of this paper is to show the relative ease with which the TF techniques can be used for modal identification and their potential for real world applications where output only identification is essential. Recorded ambient vibration data processed using techniques such as the random decrement technique can be used to obtain the free vibration response, so that further processing using TF based modal identification can be performed.展开更多

This paper put forward a braking control strategy for hybrid electric vehicle; the control strategy is implemented with eight DOFs (Degree-of-Freedom) nonlinear vehicle forward simulation model which is built under the environment of Matlab/Simulink. Based on target wheel slip ratio, a fuzzy logic approach was applied to maintain the optimal target slip ratio so that best compromise between hydraulic torque and regenerative torque can be obtained for the vehicle.展开更多

The new-type grinder adopts some high and new technologies: ① the normal tracing device could make grinding wheel coincide with the normal direction of the machining points in work piece, and improve surface quality and dimensional accuracy; ② the digital image on-line recognition system could monitor machining process and compensate wheel wear in real time; ③ linear motor drive mechanism could realize the exact adjustment of the grinding head digitally and increase the machining efficiency. The math models of normal tracing and circular tolerance zone were presented. The experimental results show that the new-type CNC curve grinding machine equipped with the three devices mentioned above is easy to realize the precision grinding of any complex curve, and improve surface quality, dimensional accuracy and machining efficiency.展开更多
In this paper,the influence of various field shapers and their shapes on the distribution of the magnetic flux densities and applied forces on the work-piece in the electromagnetic inward tube forming are studied nume...In this paper,the influence of various field shapers and their shapes on the distribution of the magnetic flux densities and applied forces on the work-piece in the electromagnetic inward tube forming are studied numerically using the FEA software MAXWELL.First the model was verified with experimental results and thereafter four kinds of field shapers(conical,cylindrical,concave and convex)were considered.Effects of their geometries,such as air gap between field shaper and tube work-piece,height of the step in single and multiple stepped field shaper on magnetic flux densities and magnetic pressures were studied.The results of this research can be applied to design field shaper,tube compression technology,and improve the efficiency of the coil.It is seen that magnetic force decreases if height of step in convex field shaper increases but effective forming region enlarges.Decreasing air gap has also a positive influence on magnetic field increase.Though the object of this research is limited to field shaper for inward tube forming,the results can also be applied to the field shaper for tube bulging.展开更多

However, impacted composite structures have 50%-75% less strength than undamaged structures. In this work, a CFRP composite material was nondestructively characterized in order to ensure product quality and structural integrity of CFRP and one-sided pitch-catch technique was developed to measure impacted-damaged area by using an automated-data acquisition system in an immersion tank. A pitch-catch signal was found to be more sensitive than normal incidence backwall echo of longitudinal wave under defect conditions in the composite.展开更多

Suppose that it is hard to get a control-oriented governor mathematical model when the general approaches, the analytical approach or the experimental approach, are applied, and that an open-loop step response of the diesel engine and its system is available by means of computer simulation, the critical three parameters of a governor mathematical model, the proportional gain K_p, integral time constant K_i, and derivative time constant K_d, can be determined by use of PID tuning method which are widely applied in industrial process control. This paper discussed the train of thought of the approach, precondition, procedure, several modifications of the classical PID model, and some points for attention. A couple of case studies were given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.展开更多

Connected components labeling is the essential technique for the extraction. A new fast connected components labeling algorithm was presented. The definition of upward concave set was introduced to explain the algorithm. Feasibility and efficiency of the algorithm were verified with experiments. This algorithm performs well in labeling non-upward concave set connected components and applies to landmarks labeling well. However, tools with less than lmm diameter using for micro-mills have very short and unpredictable life when they are used to cut hard metals. In this study, preliminary design of experiment (DOE) test program was conducted to investigate and i- dentify the factors affecting tool wear at the micro-scale with hard material. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Taguchi method were efficient to determine appropriate cutting condition and the effect of parameters. A simple model was also developed to predict the width of slots on the workpiece along the cutting length. The obtained re- suits can provide the basic guidelines for parameter setting of micro-end-milling with hard material.展开更多

In order to study the relationships among the process parameters of box stamping process, including the blank holder force, friction coefficient, depth of drawbead, offset and length of drawbead, the decision tree algorithm C4.5 was performed to generate the decision tree using the result data of the box stamping simulation. The design and improvement methods of the decision tree were presented. Potential and valuable rules were generated by traversing the decision tree, which plays an instructive role on the practical design. The rules show that the correct combination of blank holder force and setting of drawbead are the dominant contribution for controlling the cracking and wrinkling in box stamping process. In order to validate the rules, the stamping process for box was also performed. The experiment results show good agreement with the generated rules.展开更多

A thermal elastic plastic finite element (FE) model considering e...A numerical analysis method was proposed to predict the welding residual stress in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel pipe considering solid-state phase transformations. A thermal elastic plastic finite element (FE) model considering effects of martensite transformation was developed based on commercial ABAQUS software. Continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams were employed to simulate the fraction of martensite in fusion zone, coarse-grained heat affected zone and fine-grained heat affected zone. The Koistinen-Marburger relationship was used to trace the formation of martensite. The effects of both volume change and yield strength change due to phase transformation on welding residual stress were considered using the proposed FE model. The result shows that the phase transformation has significant effects on the welding residual stress in multi-pass butt weld of pipe. The predicted simulation results by the proposed numerical method are generally in good agreement with experimental results.展开更多
Mg-RE(magnesium-rare earth)alloys exhibit pronounced in-plane anisotropy of mechanical response under quasi-static monotonic loading resulting from the RE texture,as extensively reported.In this work,an obvious in-pla...Mg-RE(magnesium-rare earth)alloys exhibit pronounced in-plane anisotropy of mechanical response under quasi-static monotonic loading resulting from the RE texture,as extensively reported.In this work,an obvious in-plane anisotropy of cyclic deformation behavior was observed in an extruded Mg-3Y alloy sheet during strain-controlled tension-compression low-cycle fatigue(LCF)at room temperature.The extrusion direction(ED)samples displayed better fatigue resistance with almost symmetrical hysteresis loops and longer fatigue life compared with the transverse direction(TD)samples.The influences of texture on the deformation modes,cracking modes,and mechanical behavior of Mg-Y alloy sheets under cyclic loading were studied quantitatively and statistically.The activation of various slip/twinning-detwinning systems was measured at desired fatigue stages via EBSD observations together with in-grain misorientation axes(IGMA)analysis.The results indicate that the activation of deformation modes in the TD sample was featured by the cyclic transition,i.e.,prismatic slip(at the tensile interval)→{10–12}tension twinning(at the compressive reversal)→detwinning+prismatic slip(at the re-tensile reversal).In the case of the ED sample,the cyclic deformation was dominated by the basal slip throughout the fatigue life.For cracking modes,intergranular cracking and persistent slip bands(PSB)cracking were the primary cracking modes in the ED sample while the TD sample showed a high tendency of{10–12}tension twinning cracking(TTW cracking).The underlying mechanisms influencing the activation of various slip/twinning-detwinning systems,as well as cracking modes and cyclic mechanical behavior,were discussed.展开更多

In this paper, a springback simulation was conducted and comparisons between the results based on different processing variables were illustrated. The discovery of knowledge of the effects of geometry and process parameters on springback from FEM results becomes increasingly important, as the number of numerical simulation has grown exponentially. Data mining is an effective tool to realize knowledge discovery in simulation results. A data-mining algorithm, rough sets theory (RST), was applied to analyze the effects of process parameters on springback in U-bending.展开更多

文摘Mg-RE(magnesium-rare earth)alloys exhibit pronounced in-plane anisotropy of mechanical response under quasi-static monotonic loading resulting from the RE texture,as extensively reported.In this work,an obvious in-plane anisotropy of cyclic deformation behavior was observed in an extruded Mg-3Y alloy sheet during strain-controlled tension-compression low-cycle fatigue(LCF)at room temperature.The extrusion direction(ED)samples displayed better fatigue resistance with almost symmetrical hysteresis loops and longer fatigue life compared with the transverse direction(TD)samples.The influences of texture on the deformation modes,cracking modes,and mechanical behavior of Mg-Y alloy sheets under cyclic loading were studied quantitatively and statistically.The activation of various slip/twinning-detwinning systems was measured at desired fatigue stages via EBSD observations together with in-grain misorientation axes(IGMA)analysis.The results indicate that the activation of deformation modes in the TD sample was featured by the cyclic transition,i.e.,prismatic slip(at the tensile interval)→{10–12}tension twinning(at the compressive reversal)→detwinning+prismatic slip(at the re-tensile reversal).In the case of the ED sample,the cyclic deformation was dominated by the basal slip throughout the fatigue life.For cracking modes,intergranular cracking and persistent slip bands(PSB)cracking were the primary cracking modes in the ED sample while the TD sample showed a high tendency of{10–12}tension twinning cracking(TTW cracking).The underlying mechanisms influencing the activation of various slip/twinning-detwinning systems,as well as cracking modes and cyclic mechanical behavior,were discussed.

文摘Springback of sheet metal induced by elastic recovery is one of major defects in sheet metal forming processed. Springback is influenced by many factors including properties of the sheet material and processing conditions. In this paper, a springback simulation was conducted and comparisons between the results based on different processing variables were illustrated. The discovery of knowledge of the effects of geometry and process parameters on springback from FEM results becomes increasingly important, as the number of numerical simulation has grown exponentially. Data mining is an effective tool to realize knowledge discovery in simulation results. A data-mining algorithm, rough sets theory (RST), was applied to analyze the effects of process parameters on springback in U-bending.
