This study analyzed 10 years of sounding data from Yongxing Island to characterize temperature, humidity, and wind profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer(ABL).Our key findings are as follows.(1)Relative humidity inversions(RIs)were the most frequent events(99.8%),followed by surface-based temperature inversions(SBIs,63%),elevated temperature inversions(EIs,50%),and low-level jets(LLJs,41%).(2)Higher near-surface temperature leads to a decrease in EI height, thickness, and intensity.(3)When EIs occurred,RIs were consistently observed beneath the base of the EIs.(4)The intensity of the RIs correlated negatively with surface humidity, whereas the intensity of the LLJs correlated positively with surface winds except in summer.(5)The boundary layer heights(BLHs)are best estimated using the potential temperature gradient method when EIs occur, otherwise, the Richardson number method is the best method. In contrast, the relative humidity and temperature gradient methods exhibit high dispersion or uncertainty.(6)The BLHs showed seasonal variability, peaking in winter(350–1450 m).These findings advance our understanding of ABL dynamics and BLH estimation over tropical islands. 展开更多

Extreme heat is among the deadliest of weather-related hazards, exerting far-reaching impacts on the natural environment and human society globally. Its risk has been rising worldwide over the past decades, particularly in densely populated urban settlements in which more than half the world’s population live.1,2 This rise is primarily attributed to anthropogenic greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,of which the dominant share is contributed by the Global North.1 The Global North comprises economically developed countries with higher levels of industrialization, technology, infrastructures, energy consumption, and GHG emissions(e.g.,North America and West Europe)whose cities are major emission hotspots.1 Besides, emission transfers via international trade from the Global South, encompassing countries with lower economic development and energy consumption, higher poverty, and more vulnerable infrastructures(e.g.,India and Brazil)compared with the Global North, contribute a nonnegligible share of GHGs. 展开更多

This study scrutinizes the thermomechanical dynamics of 3D-printed hydrofoil blades utilizing a carbon and glass bead-reinforced thermoplastic polymer.Comparative analyses underscore the pivotal role of polymer reinforcement in augmenting mechanical strength and mitigating deformation and residual stress. The investigation elucidates the expeditious and cost-efficient manufacturing potential of low-cost Fused Filament Fabrication(FFF)printers for small-scale blades, revealing exemplary mechanical performance with nominal deflection and warping in the PA12-CB/GB printed blade.A comprehensive juxtaposition between Selective Laser Sintering(SLS)and FFF printing methods favors SLS due to its isotropic properties, notwithstanding remediable warping.Emphasizing the rigorous marine environment, the study cautions against the anisotropic properties of FFF-printed blades, despite their low mechanical warping. These discernments contribute to hydrofoil design optimization through numerical analysis, shedding light on additive manufacturing’s potential for small blades in renewable energy, while underscoring the imperative for further research to advance these techniques. 展开更多

The Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) is a family of algorithms for path following problems, where each step is based on the computation of truncated vector series [1]. The Vector Padé approximants were introduced in the ANM to improve the domain of validity of vector series and to reduce the number of steps needed to obtain the entire solution path [1,2]. In this paper and in the framework of the ANM, we define and build a new type of Vector Padé approximant from a truncated vector series by extending the definition of the Padé approximant of a scalar series without any orthonormalization procedure. By this way, we define a new class of Vector Padé approximants which can be used to extend the domain of validity in the ANM algorithms. There is a connection between this type of Vector Padé approximant and Vector Padé type approximant introduced in [3, 4]. We show also that the Vector Padé approximants introduced in the previous works [1,2], are special cases of this class. Applications in 2D nonlinear elasticity are presented. 展开更多

Storm surges are cataclysmic natural disasters that occur along the coasts and are usually accompanied by large waves. The effects of coupled storm surges and waves can pose a significant threat to coastal security.Previous labo-ratory studies on the effects of storm surges and waves on coastal structures have typically utilized steady water levels and constant wave elements. An indoor simulation of the coupled processes of tides and waves is developed by adding a tide generation system to an existing laboratory wave basin to model continuous dynamic tide levels so that tide generation and wave-making occur synchronously in the pool.Specific experimental methods are given, which are applied to further study waves overtopping on artificial sea dikes and coastal flooding evolution under the coupled actions of tides and waves. The results of the overtopping discharge obtained by the test with a dynamic water level are compared with those obtained from steady water level tests and the existing empirical formula. In addition, the impacts of ecological coastal shelterbelts and structures on coastal flood processes and distributions are also investi-gated.The proposed simulation methods provide a new approach for studying the effects of storm surges and waves on coastal areas. The study also aims to provide a reference for coastal protective engineering. 展开更多

This study focuses on investigating the effect of various solvents on the supercritical extraction of organic matter from Moroccan oil shales, with the goal of determining the optimal operating conditions that result in a high yield of high-quality oil rich in aromatic compounds. The results of this study demonstrate that the extraction yield and quality of the extracted oil heavily depend on the chosen operating conditions for supercritical or subcritical extraction of organic matter from oil shale. Additionally, the study found that phenol can effectively degrade oil shale and enable extraction of nearly all the organic matter, even under mild conditions (T = 390˚C, P = 1.2 MPa, Time = 2.5 h. Furthermore, the oils obtained through this extraction process are of high quality, with a rich content of maltenes, and a higher concentration of aromatic compounds and lower levels of sulfur than those obtained using other solvents. 展开更多

Gully erosion is one of the main natural hazards, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, destroying ecosystem service and human well-being.Thus,gully erosion susceptibility maps(GESM)are urgently needed for identifying priority areas on which appropriate measurements should be considered. Here,we proposed four new hybrid Machine learning models, namely weight of evidence-Multilayer Perceptron(MLP-WoE),weight of evidence–K Nearest neighbours(KNN-WoE),weight of evidence-Logistic regression(LR-WoE),and weight of evidence-Random Forest(RF-WoE),for mapping gully erosion exploring the opportunities of GIS tools and Remote sensing techniques in the El Ouaar watershed located in the Souss plain in Morocco.Inputs of the developed models are composed of the dependent(i.e.,gully erosion points)and a set of independent variables. In this study,a total of 314 gully erosion points were randomly split into 70%for the training stage(220 gullies)and 30%for the validation stage(94 gullies)sets were identified in the study area.12 conditioning variables including elevation, slope, plane curvature, rainfall, distance to road, distance to stream, distance to fault,TWI,lithology,NDVI,and LU/LC were used based on their importance for gully erosion susceptibility mapping. We evaluate the performance of the above models based on the following statistical metrics:Accuracy, precision, and Area under curve(AUC)values of receiver operating characteristics(ROC).The results indicate the RF-WoE model showed good accuracy with(AUC=0.8),followed by KNN-WoE(AUC=0.796),then MLP-WoE(AUC=0.729)and LR-WoE(AUC=0.655),respectively.Gully erosion susceptibility maps provide information and valuable tool for decision-makers and planners to identify areas where urgent and appropriate interventions should be applied. 展开更多

One-pot chemical activation and pyrolysis process was developed for biochar production from red macroalgae residue of Gelidium sesquipedale. The macroalgae residue was activated by various catalysts(KOH,NaOH,H_(3)PO_(4),and CH_(4)ON_(2))with the two concentrations(2.5 wt%and 5 wt%)using a pulverization system followed by slow pyrolysis at 500℃.The activated biochars showed a porous morphology with an increase of water holding capacity compared to the unactivated one.The properties of activated biochar observed by further characterization(i.e.,FTIR,SEM,TGA)revealed their feasibility to be used as an adsorbent. The results of adsorption experiment confirmed that adsorption was dependent not only on the surface area but also on the surface charge, and functional groups. The sorption performance of activated biochars(AcBC),in terms of the adsorption of methylene blue, was comparable to commercial activated charcoal(Norit^(■)).NaOH(2.5 wt%)-activated biochar had the removal efficiency of 87%versus 97%for commercial activated charcoal. 展开更多
