Although application of the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar(DPR) of the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory for GR assessment is well-established, current methodologies are inherently limited. Focusing on three GRs in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA)—strategically selected for their high overlapping coverage(>65%) and distinct from single GR or less dense coverage studies—this work introduces key refinements by integrating innovative enhancements into the volume-matching method(VMM), reflecting a systematic approach to mitigating potential error sources. Specifically, we integrate: 1) a novel frequency correction method that adapts to DPR-observed precipitation phase and type, replacing assumption-based polynomial fitting;and 2) a precise beam time-difference matching approach(accuracy < 1 s) to minimize temporal mismatch errors, which improves upon coarser time averaging methods. Furthermore, we developed statistically robust, optimized threshold criteria based on systematic sensitivity analyses using 11 quality control factors, including precipitation type, bright band effects, and attenuation correction limitations. These criteria establish an enhanced protocol designed to minimize errors arising from instrumental, frequency, and scanning differences. Application of this enhanced methodology to the GBA GRs(2021–2023) yielded a significantly improved matching accuracy(correlation coefficient, CC: 0.90–0.95;standard deviation,STD: 1.2–1.6 dB). A unique contribution of this work is the quantitative estimation of historical calibration errors and operational stability, which was achieved by linking VMM results with operational GR calibration and maintenance records. This analysis revealed decreasing STD trends and identified specific calibration-related events, such as an underestimation of approximately 2.43 dB for the Shenzhen radar following calibration in 2023. Consequently, the refined methodology provides a robust framework for ongoing GR network monitoring and offers a validated pathway for authenticating China's Fengyun-3G(FY-3G) satellite precipitation measurement radar(PMR) data.展开更多

Nearly half of these events involved dancing sprites, with an additional 16 uncommon secondary jets and at least four extremely rare green emissions called “ghosts” observed following the associated sprites. Due to the absence of the precise timing needed to identify parent lightning, a method based on satellite motion trajectories and star fields is proposed to infer video frame timestamps within an error of less than one second. After verifying 95 sprites from two videos, our method identified the parent lightning for 66 sprites(~70%). The sprite-producing strokes, mainly of positive polarity with peak currents exceeding +50 k A, occurred in the stratiform region of a mesoscale convective complex(MCC)that spanned the Ganges Plain to the southern TP, with a cloud area over 200 000 km2 and a minimum cloud-top black body temperature near 180 K. This observation confirms that thunderstorms in South Asia, akin to mesoscale convective systems(MCSs) in the Great Plains of the United States or coastal thunderstorms in Europe, can produce numerous sprites, including complex species. Our analysis bears important implications for characterizing thunderstorms above the southern TP and examining their physical and chemical effects on the adjacent regions, as well as the nature of the coupling between the troposphere and middle-upper atmosphere in this region.展开更多

文摘The solar energetic particle(SEP)event is a kind of hazardous space weather phenomena,so its quantitative forecast is of great importance from the aspect of space environmental situation awareness. We present here a set of SEP forecast tools, which consists of three components:(1)a simple polytropic solar wind model to estimate the background solar wind conditions at the inner boundary of 0.1 AU(about 20 R⊙);(2)an ice-cream-cone model to estimate the erupted coronal mass ejection(CME)parameters;and(3)the improved Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere(i PATH)model to calculate particle fluxes and energy spectra.By utilizing the above models,we have simulated six realistic SEP events from 2010 August 14 to 2014 September 10,and compared the simulated results to the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites(GOES)spacecraft observations. The results show that the simulated fluxes of>10 Me V particles agree with the observations while the simulated fluxes of>100 Me V particles are higher than the observed data. One of the possible reasons is that we have adopted a simple method in the model to calculate the injection rate of energetic particles.Furthermore,we have conducted the ensemble numerical simulations over these events and investigated the effects of different background solar wind conditions at the inner boundary on SEP events. The results imply that the initial CME density plays an important role in determining the power spectrum, while the effect of varying background solar wind temperature is not significant.Naturally,we have examined the influence of CME initial density on the numerical prediction results for virtual SEP cases with different CME ejection speeds. The result shows that the effect of initial CME density variation is inversely associated with CME speed.

文摘The absorption features of olivine in visible and near-infrared(VNIR)reflectance spectra are the key spectral parameters in its mineralogical studies.Generally, these spectral parameters can be obtained by exploiting the Modified Gaussian Model(MGM)with a proper continuum removal. However, different continua may change the deconvolution results of these parameters. This paper investigates the diagnostic spectral features of olivine with diverse chemical compositions.Four different continuum removal methods with MGM for getting the deconvolution results are presented and the regression equations for predicting the Mg-number(Fo#)are introduced. The results show that different continua superimposed on the mineral absorption features will make the absorption center shift,as well as the obvious alterations in shape, width and strength of the absorption band.Additionally,it is also found that the logarithm of a second-order polynomial continuum can match the overall shape of the spectrum in logarithmic space, and the improved regression equations applied to estimate the chemical composition of olivine-dominated spectra also have a better performance. As an application example, the improved approach is applied to pulse laser irradiated olivine grains to simulate and study the space weathering effects on olivine diagnostic spectral features. The experiments confirm that space weathering can make the absorption band center shift toward longer wavelength. Therefore, the Fo#estimated from remote sensing spectra may be less than its actual chemical composition. These results may provide valuable information for revealing the difference between the spectra of olivine grains and olivine-dominated asteroids.

文摘Both analyzing a large amount of space weather observed data and alleviating personal experience bias are significant challenges in generating artificial space weather forecast products. With the use of natural language generation methods based on the sequence-to-sequence model, space weather forecast texts can be automatically generated. To conduct our generation tasks at a fine-grained level,a taxonomy of space weather phenomena based on descriptions is presented. Then, our MDH(Multi-Domain Hybrid)model is proposed for generating space weather summaries in two stages. This model is composed of three sequence-to-sequence-based deep neural network sub-models(one Bidirectional Auto-Regressive Transformers pre-trained model and two Transformer models). Then,to evaluate how well MDH performs, quality evaluation metrics based on two prevalent automatic metrics and our innovative human metric are presented. The comprehensive scores of the three summaries generating tasks on testing datasets are 70.87,93.50,and 92.69,respectively.The results suggest that MDH can generate space weather summaries with high accuracy and coherence,as well as suitable length, which can assist forecasters in generating high-quality space weather forecast products, despite the data being starved.

文摘Using a recognition model of atmospheric gravity waves(AGWs),we identified 519 AGW events from the OH airglow images observed at the Dandong and Lhasa stations from 2015 to 2017.The 317 AGW events detected at the Dandong station have wavelengths ranging from 30 to 60 km,periods from 14 to 20 min, horizontal speeds from 30 to 60 m/s,and relative intensities from 0.4%to 0.6%,respectively.The parameters of 202 events recorded at the Lhasa station mainly vary within 15-35 km in horizontal wavelength,4-6 min in period,40-100 m/s in horizontal velocity, and 0.1%-0.3%in relative intensity. The occurrence rate peaks in winter and summer at Dandong and the peak in summer are absent at Lhasa because of the lack of convective weather. The seasonal propagation directions of the waves are influenced by both the wind field-filtering effect and the distribution of wave sources. In spring, because of the southeastward background wind field, fewer southeastward events are observed at the Dandong station. The situation at the Lhasa station is similar. In summer, both the Lhasa and Dandong stations are dominated by northeastward AGWs,which can be attributed to the southwestward wind.In autumn,ray-tracing results show that the events at Dandong mainly originate from wind shear, whereas the events at the Lhasa station are triggered by convective weather. The location of the wave sources determines the trend of the propagation directions at the Dandong and Lhasa stations in autumn. In winter, because of the eastward wind, more events are propagating to the southwest at the Dandong station.

文摘Accurate calibration of China's new generation ground-based polarimetric radar(GR) network is crucial yet challenging. Consequently, the refined methodology provides a robust framework for ongoing GR network monitoring and offers a validated pathway for authenticating China's Fengyun-3G(FY-3G) satellite precipitation measurement radar(PMR) data.
文摘Tianhe Core Module of China Space Station(CSS)equips a set of instruments consisting of a Particle Fluxes and Solar Activity Detector(PFSAD)and two Atmospheric Density Multi-directional Detectors(ADMDs).The PFSAD is to measure X-rays from the Sun and energetic particles in the low-latitude and low altitude regions, including electrons, protons, and helium ions. The ADMDs are to measure thermospheric atmospheric density. The instruments provide real-time data of the orbital space environment, including solar flares, energetic particle variation and thermospheric density enhancement. All the data contribute to the CSS space weather service for mission control and astronaut’s safety. The paper gives preliminary analyses of the space environment measurements from the PFSAD and the ADMDs.By further analysis, the 1024-channel fine spectra of the solar X-ray can be used to study the mechanism of solar flares and their impacts on the Earth’s atmosphere.Data accumulation will be helpful for analyzing mid-term and long-term variations of the South Atlantic Anomaly and atmosphere density.Furthermore, the data are useful to calibrate previous empirical models and establish new models to study the space environment.

文摘Kinetic-scale magnetic holes(KSMHs)are structures characterized by a significant magnetic depression with a length scale on the order of the proton gyroradius. These structures have been investigated in recent studies in near-Earth space, and found to be closely related to energy conversion and particle acceleration,wave-particle interactions, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence at the kineticscale. However, there are still several major issues of the KSMHs that need further study—including(a)the source of these structures(locally generated in near-Earth space,or carried by the solar wind),(b)the environmental conditions leading to their generation, and(c)their spatio-temporal characteristics. In this study,KSMHs in near-Earth space are investigated statistically using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission.Approximately 200,000 events were observed from September 2015 to March 2020.Occurrence rates of such structures in the solar wind, magnetosheath, and magnetotail were obtained. We find that KSMHs occur in the magnetosheath at rates far above their occurrence in the solar wind. This indicates that most of the structures are generated locally in the magnetosheath, rather than advected with the solar wind. Moreover,KSMHs occur in the downstream region of the quasi-parallel shock at rates significantly higher than in the downstream region of the quasi-perpendicular shock, indicating a relationship with the turbulent plasma environment.Close to the magnetopause,we find that the depths of KSMHs decrease as their temporal-scale increases. We also find that the spatial-scales of the KSMHs near the subsolar magnetosheath are smaller than those in the flanks.Furthermore, their global distribution shows a significant dawn-dusk asymmetry(duskside dominating)in the magnetotail.

文摘Kelvin-Helmholtz(K-H) waves are formed from the triggering of the K-H instability on the magnetopause, which is a candidate mechanism for solar wind entry into the magnetosphere, especially under northward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. In this study,a K-H wave event was identified from the observation of probe B of the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms(THEMIS) mission on 15 May 2008.A new method to determine the wave parameters of the K-H waves in single-spacecraft observations is proposed. The dominant wave period is determined by three kinds of spectrograms for three key parameters, namely the ion density, the ion temperature, and the z component of magnetic field. The phase velocity is estimated by calculating the center-of-mass velocity of the detected K-H vortex region. This approximation is validated by comparison with other alternative methods. The method to determine the wave parameters is a first step to further study K-H wave properties and their relationship with interplanetary conditions.

文摘Extreme space weather events including≥X5.0 flares, ground level enhancement(GLE)events and super geomagnetic storms(Dst≥-250 nT)caused by super active regions(SARs)during solar cycles 21-24 were studied. The total number ofX5.0 solar flares was 62,among which 41 were X5.0-X9.9 flares and 21 were≥X10.0 flares. We found that 83.9%of the≥X5.0 flares were produced by SARs;78.05%of the X5.0-X9.9 and 95.24%of the≥X10.0 solar flares were produced by SARs;46 GLEs were registered during solar cycles 21-24,and 25 GLEs were caused by SARs,indicating that 54.3%of the GLEs were caused by SARs;24 super geomagnetic storms were recorded during solar cycles 21-24,and 12 of them were caused by SARs,namely 50%of the super geomagnetic storms were caused by SARs.We ascertained that only 29 SARs produced≥X5.0 flares,15 SARs generated GLEs and 10 SARs triggered super geomagnetic storms.Of the 51 SARs,only 33 SARs produced at least one extreme space weather event, while none of the other 18 SARs could trigger an extreme space weather event. There were only four SARs and each of them generated not only a≥X5.0 flare, but also a GLE event and a super geomagnetic storm. Most of the extreme space weather events caused by the SARs appeared during solar cycles 22 and 23,especially for GLE events and super geomagnetic storms. The longitudinal distributions of source locations for the extreme space weather events caused by SARs were also studied.

文摘Volume visualization can not only illustrate overall distribution but also inner structure and it is an important approach for space environment research.Space environment simulation can produce several correlated variables at the same time. However, existing compressed volume rendering methods only consider reducing the redundant information in a single volume of a specific variable, not dealing with the redundant information among these variables. For space environment volume data with multi-correlated variables, based on the HVQ-1d method we propose a further improved HVQ method by compositing variable-specific levels to reduce the redundant information among these variables. The volume data associated with each variable is divided into disjoint blocks of size 43 initially. The blocks are represented as two levels,a mean level and a detail level. The variable-specific mean levels and detail levels are combined respectively to form a larger global mean level and a larger global detail level. To both global levels,a splitting based on a principal component analysis is applied to compute initial codebooks. Then,LBG algorithm is conducted for codebook refinement and quantization. We further take advantage of progressive rendering based on GPU for real-time interactive visualization. Our method has been tested along with HVQ and HVQ-1d on high-energy proton flux volume data,including>5,>10,>30 and>50 MeV integrated proton flux. The results of our experiments prove that the method proposed in this paper pays the least cost of quality at compression, achieves a higher decompression and rendering speed compared with HVQ and provides satisficed fidelity while ensuring interactive rendering speed.

文摘The bipolar electric field solitary(EFS)structures observed frequently in space plasmas by satellites have two different polarities, first positive electric field peak then negative(i.e.,positive/negative)and first negative then positive peak(i.e.,negative/positive).We provide the physical explanation on the polarity of observed bipolar EFS structures with an electrostatic ion fluid model. The results show that if initial electric field𝐸E_(0)>0,the polarity of the bipolar EFS structure will be positive/negative;and if𝐸E_(0)<0,the polarity of the bipolar EFS structure will be negative/positive.However,for a fixed polarity of the EFS,either positive/negative or negative/positive,if the satellite is located at the positive side of the EFS,the observed polarity should be positive/negative,if the satellite is located at the negative side of the EFS,the observed polarity should be negative/positive.Therefore,we provide a method to clarify the natural polarity of the EFS with observed polarity by satellites. Our results are significant to understand the physical process in space plasma with the satellite observation.

文摘Olivine and pyroxene are important mineral end-members for studying the surface material compositions of mafic bodies. The profiles of visible and near-infrared spectra of olivine-orthopyroxene mixtures systematically vary with their composition ratios. In our experiments,we combine the RELAB spectral database with new spectral data obtained from some assembled olivine-orthopyroxene mixtures. We found that the commonly-used band area ratio(BAR,Cloutis et al.)does not work well on our newly obtained spectral data.To investigate this issue,an empirical procedure based on fitted results by a modified Gaussian model is proposed to analyze the spectral curves.Following the new empirical procedure, the endmember abundances can be estimated with a 15%accuracy with some prior mineral absorption features. In addition, the mixture samples configured in our experiments are also irradiated by pulsed lasers to simulate and investigate the space weathering effects.Spectral deconvolution results confirm that low-content olivine on celestial bodies is difficult to measure and estimate. Therefore, the olivine abundance of space weathered materials may be underestimated from remote sensing data. This study may be utilized to quantify the spectral relationship of olivine-orthopyroxene mixtures and further reveal their correlation between the spectra of ordinary chondrites and silicate asteroids.

文摘With the development of the hyperspectral remote sensing technique, extensive chemical weathering profiles have been identified on Mars. These weathering sequences, formed through precipitation-driven leaching processes, can reflect the paleoenvironments and paleoclimates during pedogenic processes. The specific composition and stratigraphic profiles mirror the mineralogical and chemical trends observed in weathered basalts on Hainan Island in south China. In this study,we investigated the laboratory reflectance spectra of a 53-m-long drilling core of a thick basaltic weathering profile collected from Hainan Island. We established a quantitative spectral model by combining the genetic algorithm and partial least squares regression(GA-PLSR)to predict the chemical properties(SiO2,Al2O3,Fe2O3)and index of laterization(IOL).The entire sample set was divided into a calibration set of 25 samples and a validation set of 12 samples.Specifically, the GA was used to select the spectral subsets for each composition, which were then input into the PLSR model to derive the chemical concentration. The coefficient of determination(R2)values on the validation set for SiO2,Al2O3,Fe2O3,and the IOL were greater than 0.9.In addition, the effects of various spectral preprocessing techniques on the model accuracy were evaluated. We found that the spectral derivative treatment boosted the prediction accuracy of the GA-PLSR model. The improvement achieved with the second derivative was more pronounced than when using the first derivative. The quantitative model developed in this work has the potential to estimate the contents of similar weathering basalt products, and thus infer the degree of alteration and provide insights into paleoclimatic conditions. Moreover, the informative bands selected by the GA can serve as a guideline for designing spectral channels for the next generation of spectrometers.

文摘Solar activity plays an important role in influencing space weather, making it important to understand numerous aspects of spatial and temporal variations in the Sun's radiative output.High-performance deep learning models and long-term observational records of sunspot relative numbers are essential for solar cycle forecasting.Using the multivariate time series of monthly sunspot relative numbers provided by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and two Informer-based models,we forecast the amplitude and timing of solar cycles 25 and 26.The main results are as follows:(1)The maximum amplitude of solar cycle 25 is higher than the previous solar cycle 24 and the following solar cycle 26,suggesting that the long-term oscillatory variation of sunspot magnetic fields is related to the roughly centennial Gleissberg cyclicity.(2)Solar cycles 25 and 26 exhibit a pronounced Gnevyshev gap, which might be caused by two non-coincident peaks resulting from solar magnetic flux transported by meridional circulation and mid-latitude diffusion in the convection zone.(3)Hemispheric prediction of sunspot activity reveals a significant northsouth asynchrony, with activity level of the Sun being more intense in the southern hemisphere. These results are consistent with expectations derived from precursor methods and dynamo theories, and further provide evidence for internal changes in solar magnetic field during the decay of the Modern Maximum.

文摘On 19 May 2022, an outbreak of 105 red sprites that occurred over South Asia was fortuitously recorded by two amateurs from a site in the southern Tibetan Plateau(TP), marking the highest number captured over a single thunderstorm in South Asia. Our analysis bears important implications for characterizing thunderstorms above the southern TP and examining their physical and chemical effects on the adjacent regions, as well as the nature of the coupling between the troposphere and middle-upper atmosphere in this region.

文摘One of the detection objectives of the Chinese Asteroid Exploration mission is to investigate the space environment near the Main-belt Comet(MBC,Active Asteroid)311P/PANSTARRS.This paper outlines the scientific objectives, measurement targets, and measurement requirements for the proposed Gas and Ion Analyzer(GIA).The GIA is designed for in-situ mass spectrometry of neutral gases and low-energy ions, such as hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen,in the vicinity of 311P.Ion sampling techniques are essential for the GIA's Time-of-Flight(TOF)mass analysis capabilities. In this paper,we present an enhanced ion sampling technique through the development of an ion attraction model and an ion source model. The ion attraction model demonstrates that adjusting attraction grid voltage can enhance the detection efficiency of low-energy ions and mitigate the repulsive force of ions during sampling, which is influenced by the satellite's surface positive charging. The ion source model simulates the processes of gas ionization and ion multiplication.Simulation results indicate that the GIA can achieve a lower pressure limit below 10-13Pa and possess a dynamic range exceeding 10~9.These performances ensure the generation of ions with stable and consistent current, which is crucial for high-resolution and broad dynamic range mass spectrometer analysis.Preliminary testing experiments have verified GIA's capability to detect gas compositions such as H2O and N2.In-situ measurements near 311P using GIA are expected to significantly contribute to our understanding of asteroid activity mechanisms, the evolution of the atmospheric and ionized environments of main-belt comets, the interactions with solar wind, and the origin of Earth's water.

文摘We examined the heliolatitude distribution and North-South(N-S)asymmetry of Ground Level Enhancement(GLE)event source locations from 1942 to 2024,finding distinct patterns between the periods 1942–1979 and1980–2024.Between 1942 and 1979,33 GLE events were recorded:5 from the southern hemisphere within[S3,S11]and 28 from the northern hemisphere within[N7,N37].The southeast quadrant was devoid of any source locations for GLE events.45.4%of the source locations of the GLE events were within the latitudinal range of[S15,N15].The remaining source locations of the GLE events were distributed at latitudes above 15°in the northern hemisphere.Between 1980 and 2024,43 GLE events were recorded:25 from the southern hemisphere and 18 from the northern hemisphere, with all events above 30°latitude originating from the northern hemisphere.Approximately 44.2%of the source locations of the GLE events were distributed within the latitudinal band[S15,N15].Over the period from 1942 to 2024,44.7%within[S15,N15],63.2%within[S20,N20],80.3%within[S25,N25],88.2%within[S30,N30],and 11.8%at latitudes above 30°.N-S asymmetry was significant at latitudes above 0°,5°,10°,15°,20°and 30°,with northern hemisphere dominance. Moreover,a strong inverse correlation exists between the number of GLE events from the northern and southern hemispheres at latitudes above 0°,5°,10°,15°,20°,25°and 30°.

文摘Partitioning the solar cycle into ascending and descending phases,we examine the solar cycle distribution of the north-south(N-S)asymmetry in the source locations of super geomagnetic storms(SGSs;Dst≤-250 nT)during 1932-2018.We found that during the ascending phases,SGS source locations were predominantly in the northern hemisphere(NH),exhibiting significant N-S asymmetry. For the SGSs in the descending phases, source locations of the SGSs dominated in the NH and N-S asymmetry was only significant in the western hemisphere. For the period from 1932 to 2018,the source locations of SGSs were predominantly in the NH,and the N-S asymmetry was significant. The cumulative numbers of SGSs originating from the two hemispheres were strongly anticorrelated during the ascending phases, descending phases, and the entire period from 1932 to 2018.For the source locations of SGSs with different intensities, significant N-S asymmetries were observed in the source location distribution.Specifically, for all SGSs,SGSs with-400 nT<Dst≤-300 nT,and SGSs with Dst≤-300 nT,the NH exhibited a higher number of events compared to the southern hemisphere(SH),indicating a dominance of SGSs in the NH.From the perspective of the evolution of N-S asymmetry with the solar cycle, the source locations of the SGSs always dominated in the NH during the ascending phases. However, during solar cycles 17-19 and 21,the source locations of the SGSs dominated in the NH,while during solar cycles 20,22,and 23 the source locations of the SGSs dominated in the SH.From the perspective of N-S asymmetry for Solar Cycles 17-23,solar activity across the two hemispheres is largely balanced. However, the solar activities manifested by CMEs that can trigger SGSs during Solar Cycles 17-23 were predominantly in the NH.Therefore, factors beyond solar activity, such as the propagation of the CMEs from the Sun to the Earth, likely contribute to the observed N-S asymmetric distribution of the source locations of SGSs.
