Impact glasses can be categorized as either local or exotic. Those preserving geochemical signatures matching local lithologies (e.g., mare basalts or their single minerals) or regolith bulk soil compositions are classified as “local”. Otherwise, they could be defined as “exotic”. The analysis of exotic glasses provides the opportunity to explore previously unsampled lunar areas. This study focuses on the identification of exotic glasses within the Chang’e-5 (CE-5) soil sample by analyzing the trace elements of 28 impact glasses with distinct major element compositions in comparison with the CE-5 bulk soil. However, the results indicate that 18 of the analyzed glasses exhibit trace element compositions comparable to those of the local CE-5 materials. In particular, some of them could match the local single mineral component in major and trace elements, suggesting a local origin. Therefore, it is recommended that the investigation be expanded from using major elements to including nonvolatile trace elements, with a view to enhancing our understanding on the provenance of lunar impact glasses. To achieve a more accurate identification of exotic glasses within the CE-5 soil sample, a novel classification plot of Mg# versus La is proposed. The remaining 10 glasses, which exhibit diverse trace element variations, were identified as exotic. A comparative analysis of their chemical characteristics with remote sensing data indicates that they may have originated from the Aristarchus, Mairan, Sharp, or Pythagoras craters. This study elucidates the classification and possible provenance of exotic materials within the CE-5 soil sample, thereby providing constraints for the enhanced identification of local and exotic components at the CE-5 landing site.展开更多

Clearly, in order to detect potential life signals beyond Earth, fundamental questions, such as how to define such terms as “life” and “biosignature”, have been given considerable attention. Due to the high costs of direct exploration of Mars, Mars-like regions on Earth have been invaluable targets for astrobiological research, places where scientists could practice the search for “biosignatures” and refine ways to detect them. This review summarizes scientific instrumental techniques that have resulted from this work. Instruments must necessarily be our “eyes” and “hands” as we attempt to identify and quantify biosignatures on Mars.Scientific devices that can be applied in astrobiology include mass spectrometers and electromagnetic-spectrum-based spectrometers, redox potential indicators, circular dichroism polarimeters, in situ nucleic acid sequencers, life isolation/cultivation systems, and imagers. These devices and how to interpret the data they collect have been tested in Mars-analog extreme environments on Earth to validate their practicality on Mars. To anticipate the challenges of instrumental detection of biosignatures through the full evolutionary history of Mars, Terrestrial Mars analogs are divided into four major categories according to their similarities to different Martian geological periods(the Early-Middle Noachian Period, the Late Noachian-Early Hesperian Period, the Late Hesperian-Early Amazonian Period, and the Middle-Late Amazonian Period). Future missions are suggested that would focus more intensively on Mars’ Southern Hemisphere, once landing issues there are solved by advances in spacecraft engineering, since exploration of these early terrains will permit investigations covering a wider continuum of the shifting habitability of Mars through its geological history. Finally, this paper reviews practical applications of the range of scientific instruments listed above, based on the four categories of Mars analogs here on Earth. We review the selection of instruments suitable for autonomous robotic rover tests in these Mars analogs. From considerations of engineering efficiency,a Mars rover ought to be equipped with as few instrument assemblies as possible. Therefore, once candidate landing regions on Mars are defined, portable suites of instruments should be smartly devised on the basis of the known geological, geochemical, geomorphological, and chronological characteristics of each Martian landing region. Of course, if Mars sample-return missions are successful, such samples will allow experiments in laboratories on Earth that can be far more comprehensive and affordable than is likely to be practicable on Mars.To exclude false positive and false negative conclusions in the search for extraterrestrial life, multiple diverse and complementary analytical techniques must be combined, replicated, and carefully interpreted. The question of whether signatures of life can be detected on Mars is of the greatest importance. Answering that question is extremely challenging but appears to have become manageable.展开更多

Unlike the easy-to-understand misinterpretations, the EPF involves field perpendicular E×B plasma drift and field-aligned plasma diffusion acting together and plasma flowing in the direction of the resultant at all points along the field lines at all altitudes. The EIA is formed mainly from the removal of plasma from around the equator by the upward E×B drift creating the trough and consequently the crests with small accumulation of plasma at the crests when the crests are within ~±20° magnetic latitudes and no accumulation when they are beyond ~±25° magnetic latitudes. The strong EIA under magnetically active conditions arises from the simultaneous impulsive action of eastward prompt penetration electric field and equatorward neutral wind. Intense ionospheric irregularities develop in the post-sunset bottom-side equatorial ionosphere when it rises to high altitudes, and evolve nonlinearly into the topside. Pre-reversal enhancement(PRE) of the vertical upward E×B drift and its fluctuations amplified during PRE provide the driving force and seed, with neutral wind and gravity waves being the primary sources. At low solar activity especially in summer when fast varying PRE is absent, the slow varying gravity waves including large scale waves(LSW)seem to act as both driver and seed for weak irregularities. At mid latitudes, the irregularities are weak and associated with medium scale traveling ionospheric disturbances(MSTIDs). A low latitude minimum in the occurrence of the irregularities at March equinox predicted by theoretical models is identified. The minimum occurs on the poleward side of the EIA crest and shifts equatorward from ~25° magnetic latitudes at high solar activity to below 17° at low solar activity.展开更多

Although numerous observations of meteor trail irregularities were performed with VHF/UHF coherent scatter radars in the past, no simultaneous radar and optical instruments were employed to investigate the characteristics of meteor trail irregularity and its corresponding meteoroid. By installing multiple video cameras near the Sanya VHF radar site, an observational campaign was conducted during the period from November 2016 to February 2017. A total of 242 optical meteors with simultaneous non-specular echoes backscattered from the plasma irregularities generated in the corresponding meteor trails were identified. A good agreement between the angular positions of non-specular echoes derived from the Sanya radar interferometer and those of optical meteors was found, validating that the radar system phase offsets have been properly calibrated. The results also verify the interferometry capability of Sanya radar for meteor trail irregularity observation. The non-specular echoes with simultaneous optical meteors were detected at magnetic aspect angles greater than ~78°. Based on the meteor visual magnitude estimated from the optical data, it was found that the radar nonspecular echoes corresponding to brighter meteors survived for longer duration. This could provide observational evidence for the significance of meteoroid mass on the duration of meteor trail irregularity. On the other hand, the simultaneous radar and video common-volume observations showed that there were some cases with optical meteors but without radar non-specular echoes. One possibility could be that some of the optical meteors appeared at extremely low altitudes where meteor trail irregularities rarely occur.展开更多

This paper used ab initio method to investigate this kind of influence of Mg2+, Fe2+ and Zn2+ cations on 13C-18O bonds in precipitated aragonite, calcite and dolomite. The polynomials of Δ47 and reduced partition function ratios (RPFRs) for 13/12C, 14/12C and 18/16O of these minerals were given within temperatures ranging from 260 to 1500 K. We found that these cations significantly decreased the Δ47 values at the level of 10-3 - 10-2 per mil, comparing with pure crystals;and that if the Δ47 values were used to reconstruct the temperatures Ts, the deviation of T was about 7.2°C for, for instance, zinc-enriched aragonite, as discussed in our paper. It was suggested that due to such influence, researchers would better use a proper thermometer according to the main impurity metal cations in carbonates. We also found that according to the probability theory, the theoretical value of the influence of phosphoric acid on Δ47 of CO2 degassed from different carbonates was zero.展开更多

文摘We have constrained a small-scale,dome-shaped low-velocity structure near the core-mantle boundary(CMB)of Earth beneath Perm(the Perm anomaly)using travel-time analysis and three-dimensional(3-D)forward waveform modeling of seismic data sampling of the mantle. The best-fitting dome-shaped model centers at 60.0°E,50.5°N,and has a height of 400 km and a radius that increases from 200 km at the top to 450 km at the CMB.Its velocity reduction varies from 0%at the top to–3.0%at 240km above the CMB to–3.5%at the CMB.A surrounding 240-km-thick high-velocity D''structure has also been detected. The Perm anomaly may represent a stable smallscale chemical pile in the lowermost mantle, although the hypothesis of a developing mantle plume cannot be ruled out.

文摘Leading national space exploration agencies and private enterprises are actively engaged in lunar exploration initiatives to accomplish manned lunar landings and establish permanent lunar bases in the forthcoming years. With limited access to lunar surface materials on Earth, lunar regolith simulants are crucial for lunar exploration research. The Chang’e-5(CE-5)samples have been characterized by state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, providing a unique opportunity to develop a high-quality lunar regolith simulant. We have prepared a high-fidelity PolyU-1 simulant by pulverizing, desiccating, sieving, and blending natural mineral materials on Earth based on key physical, mineral, and chemical characteristics of CE-5 samples. The results showed that the simulant has a high degree of consistency with the CE-5 samples in terms of the particle morphology, mineral and chemical composition.Direct shear tests were conducted on the simulant, and the measured internal friction angle and cohesion values can serve as references for determining the mechanical properties of CE-5 lunar regolith. The PolyU-1 simulant can contribute to experimental studies involving lunar regolith, including the assessment of interaction between rovers and lunar regolith,as well as the development of in-situ resource utilization(ISRU)technologies.

文摘For decades, the search for potential signs of Martian life has attracted strong international interest and has led to significant planning and scientific implementation. Answering that question is extremely challenging but appears to have become manageable.

文摘Following a brief history and progress of ionospheric research, this paper presents a brief review of the recent developments in the understanding of two major phenomena in low and mid latitude ionosphere—the equatorial ionization anomaly(EIA) and involved equatorial plasma fountain(EPF) and ionospheric irregularities. The minimum occurs on the poleward side of the EIA crest and shifts equatorward from ~25° magnetic latitudes at high solar activity to below 17° at low solar activity.

文摘The plume-surface interaction(PSI)is a common phenomenon that describes the environment surrounding the landers resulting from the impingement of hot rocket exhaust on the regolith of planetary bodies. The PSI will cause obscuration, erosion of the planetary surface, and high-speed spreading of dust or high-energy ejecta streams, which will induce risks to a safe landing and cause damage to payloads on the landers or to nearby assets.Safe landings and the subsequent scientific goals of deep-space exploration in China call for a comprehensive understanding of the PSI process, including the plume flow mechanics, erosion mechanism, and ejecta dynamics. In addition, the landing crater caused by the plume provides a unique and insightful perspective on the understanding of PSI.In particular, the PSI can be used directly to constrain the composition, structure, and mechanical properties of the surface and subsurface soil.In this study,we conducted a systematic review of the phenomenology and terrestrial tests of PSI:we analyzed the critical factors in the PSI process and compared the differences in PSI phenomena between lunar and Martian conditions;we also reviewed the main erosion mechanisms and the evolution and development of terrestrial tests on PSI.We discuss the problems with PSI,challenges of terrestrial tests, and prospects of PSI,and we show the preliminary results obtained from the landing crater caused by the PSI of Tianwen-1.From analysis of the camera images and digital elevation model reconstructions,we concluded that the landing of Tianwen-1 caused the deepest crater(depth>40 cm)on a planetary surface reported to date and revealed stratigraphic layers in the subsurface of Martian soil.We further constrained the lower bounds of the mechanical properties of Martian soil by a slope stability analysis of the Tianwen-1 landing crater. The PSI may offer promising opportunities to obtain greater insights into planetary science, including the subsurface structure, mineral composition, and properties of soil.

文摘After landing in the Utopia Planitia,Tianwen-1 formed the deepest landing crater on Mars, approximately 40 cm deep, exposing precious information about the mechanical properties of Martian soil.We established numerical models for the plume-surface interaction(PSI)and the crater formation based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)methods and the erosion model modified from Roberts’Theory.Comparative studies of cases were conducted with different nozzle heights and soil mechanical properties. The increase in cohesion and internal friction angle leads to a decrease in erosion rate and maximum crater depth, with the cohesion having a greater impact. The influence of the nozzle height is not clear,as it interacts with the position of the Shock Diamond to jointly control the erosion process.Furthermore,we categorized the evolution of landing craters into the dispersive and the concentrated erosion modes based on the morphological characteristics. Finally,we estimated the upper limits of the Martian soil’s mechanical properties near Tianwen-1 landing site, with the cohesion ranging from 2612 to 2042 Pa and internal friction angle from 25°to 41°.

文摘This study presents an analysis of the quasi-16-day wave(Q16DW)at three stations in the middle latitudes by using a meteor radar chain in conjunction with Aura Microwave Limb Sounder temperature data and MERRA2(Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications,Version 2)reanalysis data from 2008 to 2017.The radar chain consists of three meteor radar stations located at Mohe(MH,53.5°N,122.3°E),Beijing(BJ,40.3°N,116.2°E),and Wuhan(WH,30.5°N,114.6°E).The Q16DW wave exhibits similar seasonal variation in the neutral wind and temperature, and the Q16DW amplitude is generally strong during winter and weak around summer. The Q16DW at BJ was found to have secondary enhancement around September in the zonal wind, which is rarely reported at similar latitudes. The latitudinal variations of the Q16DW in the neutral wind and temperature are quite different. The Q16DW at BJ is the most prominent in both neutral wind components among the three stations and the Q16DW amplitudes at MH and WH are comparable, whereas the wave amplitude in temperature decreases with decreasing latitude. The quasi-geostrophic refractive index squared at the three stations in the period from 2008 to 2017 was revealed. The results indicate that the Q16DW in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere(MLT)at MH has a limited contribution from the lower atmosphere.Around March and October, the Q16DW in the troposphere at BJ can propagate upward into the MLT region, whereas at WH,the contribution to the Q16DW in the MLT region is largely from the mesosphere.

文摘In a recent paper(Luo H et al.,2022),we found that the peak amplitudes of diurnal magnetic variations, measured during martian days(sols)at the InSight landing site, exhibited quasi Carrington-Rotation(qCR)periods at higher eigenmodes of the natural orthogonal components(NOC);these results were based on~664 sols of magnetic field measurements. However, the source of these periodic variations is still unknown. In this paper we introduce the neutral-wind driven ionospheric dynamo current model(e.g.,Lillis et al.,2019)to investigate the source.Four candidates-the draped IMF,electron density/plasma density, the neutral densities, and the electron temperature in the ionosphere with artificial qCR periodicity, are applied in the modeling to find the main factor likely to be causing the observed surface magnetic field variations that exhibit the same qCR periods. Results show that the electron density/plasma density, which controls the total conductivity in the dynamo region, appears to account for the greatest part of the surface qCR variations;its contribution reaches about 67.6%.The draped IMF,the neutral densities, and the electron temperature account, respectively, for only about 12.9%,10.3%,and 9.2%of the variations. Our study implies that the qCR magnetic variations on the Martian surface are due primarily to variations of the dynamo currents caused by the electron density variations. We suggest also that the timevarying fields with the qCR period could be used to probe the Martian interior's electrical conductivity structure to a depth of at least 700 km.

文摘Unlike Earth,Mars lacks a global dipolar magnetic field but is dominated by patches of a remnant crustal magnetic field. In 2021,the Chinese Mars Rover will land on the surface of Mars and measure the surface magnetic field along a moving path within the possible landing region of 20°W-50°W,20°N-30°N.One scientific target of the Rover is to monitor the variation in surface remnant magnetic fields and reveal the source of the ionospheric current. An accurate local crustal field model is thus considered necessary as a field reference. Here we establish a local crust field model for the candidate landing site based on the joint magnetic field data set from Mars Global Explorer(MGS)and Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution(MAVEN)data combined. The model is composed of 1,296 dipoles, which are set on three layers but at different buried depths. The application of the dipole model to the joint data set allowed us to calculate the optimal parameters of their dipoles. The calculated results demonstrate that our model has less fitting error than two other state-of-the art global crustal field models, which would indicate a more reasonable assessment of the surface crustal field from our model.

文摘Meteoroids entering the Earth's atmosphere can create meteor trail irregularity seriously disturbing the background ionosphere. One possibility could be that some of the optical meteors appeared at extremely low altitudes where meteor trail irregularities rarely occur.

文摘Magnetotactic bacteria(MTB)are morphologically and phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes commonly able to produce magnetic nanocrystals within intracellular membrane-bound organelles(i.e.,magnetosomes)and to swim along geomagnetic field lines. We studied the diversity of MTB in the samples collected from a mangrove area in the Sanya River,Hainan,South China, using microscopic and microbial phylogenetic methods. Results of microanalysis and observation in microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDXS)reveal a highly morphological diversity of MTB including unicellular cocci,vibrios,rod-shaped bacteria, and three morphotypes of multicellular magnetotactic prokaryotes(MMPs).In addition, analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that these MTB were clustered into 16 operational taxonomic units affi liated to the Alpha-,Delta-,and Gamma-proteobacteria classes within the Proteobacteria phylum.Meanwhile,by using the coupled fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy analysis, rodshaped bacteria, vibrio, and cocci were phylogenetically and structurally identified at the single-cell level. This study demonstrated highly diverse MTB communities in the mangrove ecosystem and provide a new insight into the overall diversity of MTB.

文摘Most protons in the solar wind belong to one of two different populations, the less dense beam protons and the denser core protons. The beam protons, with a velocity of(1-2)V_(A)(V_(A)is the local Alfvén speed),always drift relative to the core protons;this kind of distribution is unstable and stimulates several kinds of wave mode.In this study, using a 2 D hybrid simulation model,we find that the original right-handed elliptically polarized Alfvén waves become linearly polarized, and eventually become right-handed and circularly polarized.Given that linearly polarized waves are a superposition of left-handed and right-handed waves, cyclotron resonance in the right-handed/left-handed component heats beam/core protons perpendicularly. The resonance between beam protons and right-handed polarized waves is stronger when the beam relative density is lower, resulting in more dramatic perpendicular heating of beam protons, whereas the situation is reversed when the beam relative density is larger.

文摘Magnetotactic bacteria(MTB)synthesize intracellular magnetic organelles, magnetosomes, which consist of magnetic crystals that are enveloped in a membrane.Magnetosomes are organized into a chain(s)and confer on cells a magnetic dipolar moment. This magnetic property allows MTB cells to align and swim along geomagnetic field lines,a movement referred to as magnetotaxis. Some MTB species change their swim direction in response to illumination by UV,violet and blue light. Here we analyzed the polarity of morphology, magnetism, and motion in Mediterranean multicellular magnetotactic prokaryotes, also called, magnetoglobules or MMP.The magnetoglobules were assembled from 60-80 cells into an asymmetric ellipsoidal morphology with a relative narrow and large end. They swam dominantly northward, parallel to the direction of the magnetic field, with the narrow-end as the leading side.In response to a reversal in the direction of the magnetic field, they aligned quickly along the magnetic field lines and kept swimming northward.Interestingly, under constant illumination,385-nm UV light, magnetoglobules changed their swimming direction southward anti-parallel to the direction of the magnetic field, with the large-end as the leading side. The change from a northward to southward direction occurred along with an increase of swimming speed.A minimum of 35-mW/cm^(2) irradiance of UV light was sufficient to trigger the swimming re-orientation.UV radiation also triggered the unidirectional division of magnetoglobules.Together these results revealed a coordination of the polarity of magnetoglobule morphology, magnetic moment, and swimming orientation,in response to magnetic and optical stimuli. The UV triggered the reversal of magnetotaxis and magnetoglobule division indicating the ecological significance of light for multicellular magnetotactic prokaryotes.
文摘The influence of metal cations on 13C-18O bonds in carbonates is still under debate. We also found that according to the probability theory, the theoretical value of the influence of phosphoric acid on Δ47 of CO2 degassed from different carbonates was zero.
