In the case of a simply supported slender beam under certain average acceleration of base, the second natural frequency of the beam may approximate the tripled first one so that the condition of 3: i internal resonance of the beam holds true. The method of multiple scales is used to solve directly the nonlinear differential equations and to derive a set of nonlinear modulation equations for the principal parametric resonance of the first mode combined with 3: 1 internal resonance between the first two modes. Then, the modulation equations are numerically solved to obtain the steady-state response and the stability condition of the beam. The abundant nonlinear dynamic behaviors, such as various types of local bifurcations and chaos that do not appear for linear models, can be observed in the case studies. For a Hopf bifurcation, the 4-dimensional modulation equations are reduced onto the central manifold and the type of Hopf bifurcation is determined. As usual, a limit cycle may undergo a series of period-doubling bifurcations and become a chaotic oscillation at last.展开更多

Compared with those in previous studies, this model includes the pitch and roll of the vehicle body, the motion of 4 wheels in the accelerating or braking process, the nonlinear coupling of vehicle body and unsprung part, as well as the air drag and wind effect. As a result, the model can be used for the analysis of various maneuvers of the four-wheel-steering vehicles. In addition, the previous models can be considered as a special case of this model. The paper gives some case studies for the dynamic performance of a four-wheel-steering vehicle under step input and saw-tooth input of steering angle applied on the front wheels, respectively.展开更多

It reveals the bifurcation behavior in the buckling process simulated with very fine time steps. In the whole cycle of nonlinear deformation, the carbon nanotubes exhibit the profound hysteretic behavior and the energy absorption ability. The molecular dynamics simulation indicates that the carbon nanotube behaves approximately as an ideal plastic spring when the cyclic strain is applied within the same postbuckling mode. In comparison, the theory of continuum mechanics gives a good prediction about the critical buckling strength, but only provides a rough estimation for the post-buckling behaviors.展开更多

This problem has received a considerable amount of attention in the past few years. It is well known that the cross-correlation function between the measured responses is a sum of complex exponential functions of the same form as the impulse response function of the original system. So this paper presents a time-domain operating modal identifcation global scheme and a frequency-domain scheme from output-only by cou- pling the cross-correlation function with conventional modal parameter estimation. The outlined techniques are applied to an airplane model to estimate modal parameters from response-only data.展开更多

A 200-DOF (Dimension of freedom) test model is designed to correlate with finite element mode. A newly developed frequency-spatial domain decomposition ( FSDD ) technique is used to identify modal characteristics of the full-size building by using ambient response measurements. In the interested frequency ranges of 0~4.5 Hz and 0~ 6.5 Hz altogether 9 bending and torsion modes are identified. As one of the major focuses of the project, the accurate damping estimation is conducted based on FSDD. The identified modal frequencies and mode shapes are utilized for finite element model tuning. Excellent agreement has been achieved with respect to the final tuned finite element (FE) model up to 9 modes.展开更多
