Thoracic reconstructions are essential surgical techniques used to replace severely damaged tissues and restore protection to internal organs.In recent years,advancements in additive manufacturing have enabled the pro...Thoracic reconstructions are essential surgical techniques used to replace severely damaged tissues and restore protection to internal organs.In recent years,advancements in additive manufacturing have enabled the production of thoracic implants with complex geometries,offering more versatile performance.In this study,we investigated a design based on a spring-like geometry manufactured by laser powder bed fusion(LPBF),as proposed in earlier research.The biomechanical behavior of this design was analyzed using various isolated semi-ring-rib models at different levels of the rib cage.This approach enabled a comprehensive examination,leading to the proposal of several implant configurations that were incorporated into a 3D rib cage model with chest wall defects,to simulate different chest wall reconstruction scenarios.The results revealed that the implant design was too rigid for the second rib level,which therefore was excluded from the proposed implant configurations.In chest wall reconstruction simulations,the maximum stresses observed in all prostheses did not exceed 38%of the implant material's yield stress in the most unfavorable case.Additionally,all the implants showed flexibility compatible with the physiological movements of the human thorax.展开更多
The urban land-use allocation problem is a spatial optimization problem that allocates optimum land-uses to specific land units in urban areas.This problem is an NP(nondeterministic polynomial time)-hard problem becau...The urban land-use allocation problem is a spatial optimization problem that allocates optimum land-uses to specific land units in urban areas.This problem is an NP(nondeterministic polynomial time)-hard problem because of involving many objective functions,many constraints,and complex search space.Moreover,this subject is an important issue in smart cities and newly developed areas of cities to achieve a sustainable arrangement of land-uses.Different types ofMulti-Objective Optimization Algorithms(MOOAs)based on Artificial Intelligence(AI)have been frequently employed,but their ability and performance have not been evaluated and compared properly.This paper aims to employ and compare three commonly used MOOAs i.e.NSGA-II,MOPSO,and MOEA/D in urban land-use allocation problems.Selected algorithms belong to different categories of MOOAs family to investigate their advantage and disadvantages.The objective functions of this study are compatibility,dependency,suitability,and compactness of land-uses and the constraint is compensating of Per-Capita demand in the urban environment.Evaluation of results is based on the dispersion of the solutions,diversity of the solutions’space,and comparing the number of dominant solutions in Pareto-Fronts.The results showed that all three algorithms improved the objective functions related to the current arrangement of the land-uses.However,the run time of NSGA-II is the worst,related to the Diversity Metric(DM)which represents the regularity of the distance between solutions at the highest degree.Moreover,MOPSO provides the best Scattering Diversity Metric(SDM)which shows the diversity of solutions in the solution space.Furthermore,In terms of algorithm execution time,MOEA/D performed better than the other two.So,Decision-makers should consider different aspects in choosing the appropriate MOOA for land-use management problems.展开更多
Soil erosion has been identified as one of the most destructive forms of land degradation,posing a threat to the sustainability of global economic,social and environmental systems.This underscores the need for sustain...Soil erosion has been identified as one of the most destructive forms of land degradation,posing a threat to the sustainability of global economic,social and environmental systems.This underscores the need for sustainable land management that takes erosion control and prevention into consideration.This requires the use of state-of-the-art erosion prediction models.The models often require extensive input of detailed spatial and temporal data,some of which are not readily available in many developing countries,particularly detailed soil data.The soil dataset Global Gridded Soil Information(SoilGrids)could potentially fill the data gap.Nevertheless,its value and accuracy for soil erosion modelling in the humid tropics is still unknown,necessitating the need to assess its value vis-à-vis field-based data.The major objective of this study was to conduct a comparative assessment of the value of SoilGrids and field-based soil data for estimating soil loss.Soil samples were collected from five physiographic positions(summit,shoulder,back slope,foot slope,and toe slope)using the soil catena approach.Samples were collected using a 5-cm steel sample ring(undisturbed)and a spade(disturbed).Data of the landform,predominant vegetation types,canopy cover,average plant height,land use,soil depth,shear strength,and soil color were recorded for each site.The soil samples were subjected to laboratory analysis for saturated hydraulic conductivity,bulk density,particle size distribution,and organic matter content.Pedotransfer functions were applied on the SoilGrids and field-based data to generate soil hydrological properties.The resultant field-based data were compared with the SoilGrids data for corresponding points/areas to determine the potential similarities of the two datasets.Both datasets were then used as inputs for soil erosion assessment using the revised Morgan-Morgan-Finney model.The results from both datasets were again compared to determine the degree of similarity.The results showed that with respect to point-based comparison,both datasets were significantly different.At the hillslope delineation level,the field-based data still consistently had a greater degree of variability,but the hillslope averages were not significantly different for both datasets.Similar results were recorded with the soil loss parameters generated from both datasets;point-based comparison showed that both datasets were significantly different,whereas the reverse was true for parcel/area-based comparison.SoilGrids data are certainly useful,especially where soil data are lacking;the utility of this dataset is,however,dependent on the scale of operation or the extent of detail required.When detailed,site-specific data are required,SoilGrids may not be a good alternative to soil survey data in the humid tropics.On the other hand,if the average soil properties of a region,area,or land parcel are required for the implementation of a particular project,plan,or program,SoilGrids data can be a very valuable alternative to soil survey data.展开更多

The Tibetan Plateau(TP)has been the focus of numerous studies examining the energy and water cycle variations,but there is still a lack of long-term,quantitative precise assessments of evapotranspiration.This research...The Tibetan Plateau(TP)has been the focus of numerous studies examining the energy and water cycle variations,but there is still a lack of long-term,quantitative precise assessments of evapotranspiration.This research first provided two sets of long-term comprehensive observational datasets,and an advanced monitoring technique to measure soil moisture,which can improve the estimation accuracy of evapotranspiration.Subsequently,using microwave data,the Surface Energy Balance System model and Machine Learning methods,it calculated a complete set of long-term evapotranspiration data.At the same time,based on reasonable assumptions,it also estimated the total evaporation from plateau lakes.These findings contribute significantly to the understanding of the relationship between the Asian monsoon,the TP’s physical characteristics,and its atmosphere,thereby improving predictions of water resource variability in the TP.The study’s innovative methodologies and synthesis of diverse data sources provide critical information for informed and sustainable water management strategies in the region.展开更多
