The iron and steel industries generate large amounts of unavoidable CO_(2)emissions as well as considerable quantities of slags.More than one-half of the emitted CO_(2)is produced in blast furnaces during ironmaking,and thus it is meaningful to use blast furnace slags to capture CO_(2)while addressing the byproducts and flue gas of ironmaking.Mineral carbonation of slags is a promising route to achieve carbon neutrality and effective slag utilization.To exploit slag more effectively and capture CO_(2)in flue gas,an in-depth investigation into the carbonation of blast furnace slags generated with different cooling methods was conducted.The effects of the solid–liquid ratio and introduced CO_(2)concentration on carbonation were determined.The CO_(2)uptake capacity of air-cooled slag(0.04 g/g)was greater than that of water-quenched slag.The CO_(2)uptake capacities of the two slags were comparable with those of slags in previous works,indicating the potential of the two slags for CO_(2)sequestration and utilization even with low-energy input and this fact suggests that this process is feasible. 展开更多

High-rise housing is being built in increasingly densely populated urban residential areas in Tokyo,Japan.On the other hand,detached houses are built on small,subdivided sites.In urban residential areas where detached houses are lined up,many elements related to daily life are located near roadside space and spill out onto the road.This is a distinctive modern urban residential landscape.The purpose of this study is to get closer to the reality of urban residential life.For that,we will consider the characteristics and roles of elements related to daily life that can be observed in many areas around roadside space in an urban residential area lined with detached houses,in urban living environments.This study focuses on the detached residential area of Bunkyo Ward.A field survey will be conducted to investigate the amount of elements related to daily life that can be observed from the road.In addition,we will conduct a questionnaire survey of residents in the survey area regarding their use of and awareness of the roadside space.Finally,we will investigate the relationship between lifestyle factors and urban residential life from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. 展开更多

Electrocatalysis offers efficient and targeted conversion of monomers derived from waste polyester plastics to chemical products under ambient temperature and pressure conditions.This review provides analysis of research on electrochemical upgrading of monomers derived from waste polyester plastics published from2021 to present.Factors for assessing upgrading of waste polyester plastics include alkaline hydrolysis pretreatment,indices of electrochemical reaction process(activity,stability,and techno-economic a nalysis),separation,and product recovery.Types of depolymerization monomers and their value-added products are summarized along with electrocatalytic mechanisms and reaction pathways.Notably,cathode coupled reactions offer significant value for anodic waste plastic oxidation during electrolysis processes.Development of bifunctional electrocatalysts can reduce the cost of coupled systems and complexity of the electrolyzer.Upgrading and recycling of waste plastic monomers using electrocatalytic technology should undergo downstream processing to form high-value products containing C-N and C-S derived functional groups obtained from depolymerized monomers,Electrochemical conversion and upgrading of monomers derived from waste polyester plastics can contribute to industrialization and global economies and help to realize environmental sustainability. 展开更多

Difficulty in extracting nonlinear sparse impulse features due to variable speed conditions and redundant noise interference leads to challenges in diagnosing variable speed faults.Therefore,an improved spectral amplitude modulation(ISAM)based on sparse feature adaptive convolution(SFAC)is proposed to enhance the fault features under variable speed conditions.First,an optimal bi-damped wavelet construction method is proposed to learn signal impulse features,which selects the optimal bi-damped wavelet parameters with correlation criterion and particle swarm optimization.Second,a convolutional basis pursuit denoising model based on an optimal bi-damped wavelet is proposed for resolving sparse impulses.A model regularization parameter selection method based on weighted fault characteristic amplitude ratio assistance is proposed.Then,an ISAM method based on kurtosis threshold is proposed to further enhance the fault information of sparse signal.Finally,the type of variable speed faults is determined by order spectrum analysis.Various experimental results,such as spectral amplitude modulation and Morlet wavelet matching,verify the effectiveness and advantages of the ISAM-SFAC method. 展开更多

The results suggest that the vapor pressures of lead and lead chlorides increase with increasing temperature. For the slag systems without chlorine, the logarithm of vapor pressure (lnp) shows highly linear dependency on the reciprocal of temperature (1/T), and higher vapor pressure is observed in the condition where more metallic lead vapor is formed. In this case, the vapor pressure of lead increases with increasing slag basicity (w(CaO)/w(SiO2)), increasing FeO content andw(Fe2+)/w(Fe3+) ratio. For the case of slag system with chlorine addition, the total pressures of PbCl2 and PbCl increase with decreasing basicity and FeO content of slag. 展开更多

Pretreatment of thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) by combined microwave and alkaline pretreatment (MAP) was studied to improve thermophilic anaerobic digestion efficiency. Uniform design was applied to determine the combination of target temperature (110-210°C), microwave holding time (1-51 min), and NaOH dose (0-2.5 g NaOH/g suspended solids (SS)) in terms of their effect on volatile suspended solids (VSS) solubilization. Maximum solubilization ratio (85.1%) of VSS was observed at 210°C with 0.2 g-NaOH/g-SS and 35 min holding time. The effects of 12 different pretreatment methods were investigated in 28 thermophilic batch reactors by monitoring cumulative methane production (CMP). Improvements in methane production in the TWAS were directly related to the microwave and alkaline pretreatment of the sludge. The highest CMP was a 27% improvement over the control. In spite of the increase in soluble chemical oxygen demand concentration and the decrease in dewaterability of digested sludge, a semi-continuous thermophilic reactor fed with pretreated TWAS without neutralization (at 170~C with 1 min holding time and 0.05 g NaOH/g SS) was stable and functioned well, with volatile solid (VS) and total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) reductions of 28% and 18%, respectively, which were higher than those of the control system. Additionally, methane yields (L@STP/g-CODaded, at standard temperature and pressure (STP) conditions of 0°C and 101.325 kPa) and (L@STP/g VSadad) increased by 17% and 13%, respectively, comoared to the control reactor. 展开更多

Bismuth-promoted (1% and 3%) vanadyl pyrophosphate catalysts were prepared by refluxing Bi(NO3)4.5H2O and VOPO4.2H2O in isobutanol. The incorporation of Bi into the catalysts lattice increased the surface area and lowered the overall V oxidation state. Profiles of temperature programmed reduction (TPR) in H2 show a significant shift of the maxima of major reduction peaks to lower temperatures for the Bi-promoted catalysts. A new peak was also observed at the low temperature region for the catalyst with 3% of Bi dopant. The addition of Bi also increased the total amount of oxygen removed from the catalysts. The reduction pattern and reactivity information provide fundamental insight into the catalytic properties of the catalysts. Bi-promoted catalysts were found to be highly active (71% and 81% conversion for 1% and 3% Bi promoted catalysts, respectively, at 703 K), as compared to the unpromoted material (47% conversion). The higher activity of the Bi-promoted catalysts is due to that these catalysts possess highly active and labile lattice oxygen. The better catalytic performance can also be attributed to the larger surface area. 展开更多

The program described herein (LEADAT) serves to calculate sediment date and sedimentation rate using the ^210pb method for the studies of environmental processes and pollution history on a time scale of 100 - 150 a. The program written in MATLAB ( Version7.0) permits the user to select the principal models of ^210pb method, i. e. , the constant fluxes of sediment and lead-210 ( CF- SL) model, the constant flux of lead-210 (CFL) model, the constant initial concentration of lead-210 (CICL) model and the twolayer mixing (TLM) model. Although appropriate model selection is essentially based on understanding of the sedimentary processes, the pattern of the excess ^210pb profile is also helpful for model selection. The excess ^210pb profiles for two sediment cores collected from a brackish lake and an embayment respectively are used to demonstrate the application of the program. With a graphical user interface, the program can be easily executed. Not only ASCII but also graphical output can be generated by means of the program. Meanwhile, the code can be modified easily for extension. 展开更多

Two anaerobic membrane bioreactors(AnMBRs)equipped with different membrane pore size(0.4 or 0.05μm)were operated at 25℃and fed with domestic wastewater.The hydraulic retention time(HRT)of the reactors was shortened.The microbial communities of the two AnMBRs were investigated by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to see the effects of HRT.The predominant Archaea was an aceticlastic methanogen Methanosaeta.The composition of hydrogenotrophic methanogens changed with the HRTs:the population of Methanobacterium was higher for longer HRTs,whereas the population of unclassified Methanoregulaceae was higher for shorter HRTs.The Anaerolineae,Bacteroidia and Clostridia bacteria were dominant in both of the reactors,with a combined relative abundance of over 55%.The relative abundance of Anaerolineae was proportional to the biogas production performance.The change in the population of hydrogenotrophic methanogens or Anaerolineae can be used as an indicator for process monitoring.The sum of the relative abundance of Anaerolineae and Clostridia fluctuated slightly with changes in the HRT in both AnMBRs when the reactor was stably operated.The co-occurrence analysis revealed the relative abundance of the operational taxonomic units belonging to Anaerolineae and Clostridia was functionally equivalent during the treatment of real domestic sewage.A principal coordination analysis revealed that the changes in the microbial community in each reactor were consistent with the change of HRT.In addition,both the HRT and the stability of the process are important factors for maintaining microbial community structures. 展开更多

Biodegradable polymers are highly attractive as potential alternatives to petroleum-based polymers in an attempt to achieve carbon neutrality whilst maintaining the mechanical properties of the structures.Among these polymers,polylactic acid(PLA)is particularly promising due to its good mechanical properties,biocompatibility and thermoplasticity.In this work,we aim to enhance the mechanical properties of PLA using mechanically-defibrated cellulose nanofibers(CNFs)that exhibit remarkable mechanical properties and biodegradability.We also employ fused deposition modeling(FDM),one of the three-dimensional printing methods for thermoplastic polymers,for the low-cost fabrication of the products.Mechanically-defibrated CNF-reinforced PLA matrix composites are fabricated by FDM.Their tensile properties are investigated in two printing directions(0°/90°and+45°/-45°).The discussion about the relationship between printing direction and tensile behavoir of mechanically-defibrated CNF-reinforced PLA matrix composite is the unique point of this study.We further discuss the microstructure and fracture surface of mechanically-defibrated CNF-reinforced PLA matrix composite by scanning electron microscope. 展开更多

Changes in the fungal and bacterial biomass and community structure in litter after the volcanic eruptions of Mount Usu, northern Japan were investigated using a chronosequence approach, which is widely used for analyzing vegetation succession. The vegetation changed from bare ground (10 years after the eruptions) with little plant cover and poor soil to monotonic grassland dominated by Polygonum sachalinense with undeveloped soil (33 years) and then to deciduous broad-leaved forest dominated by Populus maximowiczii with diverse species composition and well-developed soil (100 years). At three chronosequential sites, we evaluated the compositions of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and the isotope ratios of C (δ13C) and N (δ15N) in the litter of two dominant species, Polygonum sachalinense and Populus maximowiezii. The C/N ratio, δ13C and δ15N in the litter of these two species were higher in the forest than that in the bare ground and grassland. The PLFAs gradually increased from the bare ground to the forest, showing that microbial biomass increased with the development of the soil and/or vegetation. The fungi-to-bacteria ratio of PLFA was constant at 5.3 ± 1.4 in all three sites, suggesting that fungi were predominant. A canonical correspondence analysis suggested that the PLFA comoosition was related to the successional ages and the developing soil properties (P 〈 0.05, ANOSIM). The chrono- sequential analysis effectively detected the successional changes in both microbial and plant communities. 展开更多

This study analyzes the management of wastewater pollutants in a number of Chinese industrial sectors from 1998 to 2010. We use decomposition analysis to calculate changes in wastewater pollutant emissions that result from cleaner production processes, end-of-pipe treatment, structural changes in industry, and changes in the scale of production. We focus on one indicator of water quality and three pollutants: chemical oxygen demand (COD), petroleum, cyanide, and volatile phenols. We find that until 2002, COD emissions were mainly reduced through end-of-pipe treatments. Cleaner production processes didn’t begin contributing to COD emissions reductions until the introduction of a 2003 law that enforced their implementation. Petroleum emissions were primarily lowered through cleaner production mechanisms, which have the added benefit of reducing the input cost of intermediate petroleum. Diverse and effective pollution abatement strategies for cyanide and volatile phenols are emerging among industries in China. It will be important for the government to consider differences between industries should they choose to regulate the emissions of specific chemical substances. 展开更多

Southern Bangladesh's irrigation and drinking water is threatened by saline intrusion. This study aimed to establish an irrigation water quality index (IWQI) using a geostatistical model and multivariate indices in Gopalganj district, south-central Bangladesh. Groundwater samples were taken randomly (different depths) in two seasons (wet-monsoon and dry-monsoon). Hydrochemical analysis revealed groundwater in this area was neutral to slightly alkaline and dominating cations were Na^+, Mg^2+, and Ca^2+ along with major anions Cl^- and HCO3^-. Principal component analysis and Gibbs plot helped explain possible geochemical processes in the aquifer. The irrigation water evaluation indices showed: electrical conductivity (EC) 〉750 μS/cm, moderate to extreme saline; sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), excellent to doubtful; total hardness (TH), moderate to very hard; residual sodium bicarbonate, safe to marginal; Kelly's ratio 〉1; soluble sodium percentage (SSP), fair to poor; magnesium adsorption ratio, harmful for soil; and IWQI, moderate to suitable. In addition, the best fitted semivariogram for IWQI, EC, SAR, SSP, and TH confirmed that most parameters had strong spatial dependence and others had moderate to weak spatial dependence. This variation might be due to the different origin/sources of major contributing ions along with the influence of variable river flow and small anthropogenic contributions. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for IWQI, EC, SSP, and TH during both seasons confirmed the influence of salinity from the sea; low-flow in the major river system was the driving factor of overall groundwater quality in the study area. These findings may contribute to management of irrigation and/or drinking water in regions with similar groundwater problems. 展开更多

This study used Corona KH-4A and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) PRISM images to generate digital terrain models (DTMs) of the distal part of Imja Glacier,where a few supraglacial ponds (~0.07 km 2) expanded into the large Imja Glacier Lake (Imja Tsho,~0.91 km 2) between 1964 and 2006.DTMs and subsequently derived topographical maps with contour intervals of 1 m were created from the high-resolution images (Corona in 1964 and ALOS in 2006) in the Leica Photogrammetric Suite (LPS) platform.The DTMs and topographic maps provided excellent representation of the elevation and micro-topography of the glacier surface,such as its supra-glacial ponds/lake,surface depressions,and moraine ridges,with an error of about +/-4 m (maximum).The DTMs produced from the Corona and ALOS PRISM images are suitable for use in studies of the surface change of glaciers.The topographical maps produced from the Corona data (1964) showed that part of the dead ice in the down-glacier area was even higher than the top of the lateral moraine ridges,while the glacier surface in the up-glacier area was noticeably lower than the moraine crests.This suggests more extensive melting of glacier ice in the up-glacier area before 1964.The average lowering of the glacier surface from 1964 to 2006 was 16.9 m for the dead-ice area west of the lake and 47.4 m for the glacier surface east of the lake;between 1964 and 2002,the lake surface lowered by 82.3 m.These figures represent average lowering rates of 0.4,1.1,and 2.2 m/year for the respective areas. 展开更多

Sedimentation rates for the four cores were determined by ^210Pb method. The sedimentation rate range is 0.10-0.70 g/(cm^2.year). The bio-mixing depth for each core is less than 7.0 cm, and was determined by the excess 210^pb profiles as well. Therefore, the bioturbation is slight. The 210^pb-derived dates coincided with the results from ^137Cs geochronology. Acceleration in sedimentation rate due to environmental alteration has been found in cores A2.5 and 05AS8, representing two depocenters due to their topography. Evidence of the Tokal Flood in 2000 was found in core 05AS8 according to the profiles of both radioisotopes and trace metals. 展开更多

On urban arterials,travel time variability is largely dependent on the variability in the delays vehicles experience at signalized intersections.The interpretation of delay evolvement at intersections will give a comprehensive insight into arterial travel time variability and provide more possibilities for travel time estimation.Accordingly,an analytical model is proposed to study delay variability at isolated,fixed-time controlled intersections.Classic cumulative curves are utilized to derive average delay(per cycle) formulas by assuming a deterministic overflow queue.Then,an analogy with the Markov chain process is made to clarify the mechanism of stochastic delays and overflow queues at signalized intersections.It was found that,in undersaturated cases,the shape of the delay distribution changes very little over time,whereas for saturated and oversaturated cases the delay distribution is time-dependent and becomes flatter with an increasing number of cycles.The analysis of arrival distributions,e.g.,Poisson and binomial,produces the conclusion that the variability of arrivals has a significant effect on delay estimates in both undersaturated and oversaturated conditions.A larger variance of arrival flow results in a larger variance of delay distribution.All of these analyses can help road authorities to gain insights into arterial travel time variability. 展开更多

One of the efficient methods for reconstructing the balance of COshould involve the rapid conversion of COinto fuels and chemicals.The hydrogenation of COwith gaseous hydrogen is currently considered to be the most commercially feasible synthetic route, however, the supply of safe and economical hydrogen sources poses a significant challenge to up-scaling application. Direct utilization of hydrogen from dissociation of water, the most abundant, cheap and clean hydrogen resource, for the reduction of COwould be one of the most promising approaches for COutilization. This paper provides an overview of the current advances in research on highly efficient reduction of COor NaHCO, a representative compound of CO, into formic acid/formate by in situ hydrogen from water dissociation with a metal/metal oxide redox cycle under mild hydrothermal conditions. 展开更多

This paper presents the results from using a physical absorption process to absorb gaseous CO2mixed with N2using water by producing tiny bubbles via a liquid-film-forming device(LFFD)that improves the solubility of CO2in water.The influence of various parameters—pressure,initial CO2concentration,gas-to-liquid ratios,and temperature—on the CO2removal efficiency and its absorption rate in water were investigated and estimated thoroughly by statistical polynomial models obtained by the utilization of the response surface method(RSM)with a central composite design(CCD).Based on the analysis,a high efficiency of CO2capture can be reached in conditions such as low pressure,high CO2concentration at the inlet,low gas/liquid ratio,and low temperature.For instance,the highest removal efficiency in the RSM–CCD experimental matrix of nearly 80%occurred for run number 20,which was conducted at 0.30 MPa,CO2concentration of 35%,gas/liquid ratio of 0.71,and temperature of 15℃.Furthermore,the coefficients of determination,R^2,were 0.996 for the removal rate and 0.982 for the absorption rate,implying that the predicted values computed by the constructed models correlate strongly and fit well with the experimental values.The results obtained provide essential information for implementing this method properly and effectively and contribute a promising approach to the problem of CO2capture in air pollution treatment. 展开更多

Climate change and sea level rise necessitate adaptation strategies for coastal areas. This paper showcases five strategies for sea level rise adaptation: hard protection, soft protection, accommodation, retreat, and attack. This study proposes adaptation measures and a phased development strategy for coastal areas of Mokpo, an old port city on the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula that has been expanded by land reclamation. Mokpo presently experiences frequent flooding during high-water and storm events;due to their low elevation and land subsidence, most of the reclaimed areas are susceptible to future inundation via sea level rise. The fundamental adaptation strategies for the impact areas are: hard protection of important infrastructures via multi-tiered terraces;the retreat of coastal developments accompanied by green buffer zones such as wetlands and parks to accommodate temporary inundation;and up-leveling the ground for new development and phased relocation of existing development. Through the case study of Mokpo, the paper emphasizes the importance of resilient planning strategies for urban development, and highlights both the challenges and opportunities for sea level rise adaptation. 展开更多
