This complex food security and public health crisis have many levels, actors and stakeholders. There lacks equity in access food markets, unbalanced consumption of nutrients and poor state institutions that, all negatively impact food security. Global financial products and regimes can greatly influence food prices, and if not properly regulated, this can lead to whole market manipulation and starvation. This paper discusses the basics of food security in a public health framework and describes the legal and financial mechanisms that lead to food insecurity.展开更多

As outlined in the One Health Joint Plan of Action, the international One Health community includes stakeholders from different sectors. Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an academic community for One Health action has been proposed with the aim of promoting the understanding and real-world implementation of One Health approach and contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals for a healthy planet.Main text The proposed academic community would contribute to generating high-quality scientific evidence, distilling local experiences as well as fostering an interconnected One Health culture and mindset, among various stakeholders on different levels and in all sectors. The major scope of the community covers One Health governance, zoonotic diseases, food security, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change along with the research agenda to be developed. The academic community will be supported by two committees, including a strategic consultancy committee and a scientific steering committee, composed of influential scientists selected from the One Health information database. A workplan containing activities under six objectives is proposed to provide research support, strengthen local capacity, and enhance global participation. Conclusions The proposed academic community for One Health action is a crucial step towards enhancing communication, coordination, collaboration, and capacity building for the implementation of One Health. By bringing eminent global experts together, the academic community possesses the potential to generate scientific evidence and provide advice to local governments and international organizations, enabling the pursuit of common goals, collaborative policies, and solutions to misaligned interests.展开更多

文摘In 2007-2008, the world experienced over 1 billion people going hungry. This paper discusses the basics of food security in a public health framework and describes the legal and financial mechanisms that lead to food insecurity.

文摘In response to growing uncertainty in global health driven by geopolitical tensions, pandemics, and climate-related challenges, global health education must evolve to equip students with theoretical knowledge and core competencies, such as leadership,cross-cultural communication, and strategic thinking. This study reviews the updates to the International Health Project Management(IHPM)course and examines its three key changes:introducing a studentoriented teaching module, incorporating teamwork and role-play to promote autonomy and accountability;expanding geographic flexibility to encourage broader strategic thinking;and strengthening team dynamics through clearer role definitions and targeted support mechanisms.Students formed project teams, established internal regulations, and selected global health scenarios for project design. This revised approach fostered in-depth discussions that encouraged open-minded thinking, enabling students to move beyond disease-focused content to strategic systemic considerations.Greater group ownership also improved collaboration and accountability, addressing common teamwork challenges such as role confusion and uneven participation. However, the analytical depth varied depending on students’disciplinary backgrounds. Finally,we argue that a tiered curriculum that moves from theory to competency building can better support student growth.Overall, these findings highlight the potential of student-oriented approaches to strengthen leadership,cross-cultural communication, and strategic thinking, competencies essential for contributing to a shared future for global health.

文摘Background Historically, onchocerciasis has been recognised for its dermatological and ophthalmological mani-festations,such as blindness. However, growing epidemiological evidence indicates that onchocerciasis is also asso-ciated with neurological complications, particularly onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy(OAE).These complica-tions are not currently reflected in disease burden estimates and associated disability-adjusted life years(DALYs)foronchocerciasis.Main text The most recent global burden of disease estimates for onchocerciasis in 2019 reported 1.23 million DALYs without accounting for OAE.Yet,a preliminary study suggested that 128,000 years of life lost to disability(YLD,a key component of DALYs)may be attributable to epilepsy in onchocerciasis-endemic areas of East and Central Africa. This figure, which would represent over 13%of the total onchocerciasis morbidity burden and 10%of the global epilepsy morbidity burden,is likely still an underestimation.Current disability weights for epilepsy YLD estimation may not fully capture the spectrum of OAE,which often involves nodding syndrome, developmental delays, motor disabilities, cognitive impairments and stigma. In regions where access to antiseizure medication treatment is sparse, poorly con-trolled seizures can exacerbate disability and lead to premature mortality.Targeted integrated strategies-combining onchocerciasis control measures with improved epilepsy care-could help address these critical gaps. Conclusions Recognising OAE as part of the disease burden associated with onchocerciasis may encourage global health stakeholders to allocate resources for targeted interventions, thereby refining disease burden estimates,reduc-ing disability, averting premature deaths and improving overall health outcomes.
文摘Background One Health approach is crucial to tackling complex global public health threats at the interface of humans, animals, and the environment. By bringing eminent global experts together, the academic community possesses the potential to generate scientific evidence and provide advice to local governments and international organizations, enabling the pursuit of common goals, collaborative policies, and solutions to misaligned interests.

文摘The unprecedented globalization of trade, travel, climate change, protectionism, and geopolitical populism,as well as pandemic health threats are no longer issues for a single nation. In the field of public health,China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) offers immense opportunities for partnership and collective actions involving multiple countries to combat globalization-linked infectious and/or chronic diseases, emerging pandemics, and outbreaks of potential threats to both laboratory information management systems and health information management. The national and global health challenges have increasingly proved that economic prosperity cannot be achieved when huge knowledge and capacity gaps exist in health systems. There is thus a need for public health initiatives aimed at strengthening the health systems beyond sovereign borders to influence global geo-economics.We highlight situational insights that offer approaches and strategies for increasing public health investment and capacity development in the countries along the Belt and Road, enhancing public and global health cooperation alongside participation in disease control and elimination, promoting public health governance and data sharing for pandemic threats, and building shared values and benefits in public health through Sino-African cooperation and the BRI.Our approach also examines the values of the China's BRI in relation to public health, projections and initiatives for increasing new investment and development capacity in public health systems, and enhanced public and global health cooperation and participation toward the BRI's framework and scope.

文摘One Health has been recognized as a cost-effectiveness approach that intricate connections between human health, animal health, and ecosystem health. This holistic perspective is crucial for addressing complex health challenges that arise at the intersection of these domains, such as emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety&food security, and environmental degradation. The beneficiaries of the One Health ap-proach have been demonstrated by many case studies worldwide, and summarized by The World Bank that not only support poverty alleviation in developing countries, but also can reduce pandemic risk globally. It is essential for us to understand the means of promoting the initiatives in building the transdisciplinary science of One Health that requires a global vision with integration of various disciplines, stakeholders, and resources. Therefore,we introduce the role of the transdisciplinary science of One Health, and the key steps and strategies necessary to implement One Health approach in the real world. We also propose three research priorities, including empha-sizing climate change and health, enhancing global health security, and promoting equity and inclusivity which is crucial for the success of One Health initiatives.Hence, building a transdisciplinary science of One Health will not only improve holistic health between human, animal, and environmental domains, but also contribute to the global health security and sustainable development.
文摘To the editor:Common mental health disorders, like depression and anxiety, account for 45%of the global disease burden on youths aged 15-29.1 This challenge is particularly significant in low and middle-income countries(LMICs)where risk factors such as poverty, limited treatment options and stigma restrict access to care and exacerbate the burden and magnify the impact of mental disorders.23 Given these barriers, there is an urgent need for research dedicated to expanding mental healthcare for young people in LMICs.
