In order to design a suitable controller for vibration suppression of thin-walled smart structures, an electro-mechanically coupled finite element(FE) model of smart structures is developed based on first-order shear deformation(FOSD) hypothesis. Considering the vibrations generated by various disturbances, which include free and forced vibrations, a PID control is implemented to damp both the free and forced vibrations. Additionally, an LQR optimal control is applied for comparison. The implemented control strategies are validated by a piezoelectric layered smart plate under various excitations.展开更多

Estimation of the hysteresis is usually demanded for enhancing the performance of piezo-actuated systems. This paper presents an observer-based scheme to estimate the hysteresis in piezo—actuated flexible beams. The observer is based on a nonlinearity observer method. The discrete-time Kalman-filter algorithm is adopted for determination of the observer gains. The major advantages of the presented scheme include ease of implementation and robustness to uncertainty of hysteresis parameters. Simulation results demonstrate that the observer is able to estimate the hysteresis efficiently and has better robustness compared to the previous scheme existing in the literature. The present scheme was also successfully applied to a real-life system. Moreover, a control application example is included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme.展开更多

Thus, based on regression analysis and fuzzy inference system, this paper tries to develop predictive models to estimate overbreak caused by blasting at the Alborz Tunnel. To develop the models, 202 datasets were utilized, out of which 182 were used for constructing the models. To validate and compare the obtained results, determination coefficient(R2) and root mean square error(RMSE) indexes were chosen. For the fuzzy model, R2 and RMSE are equal to 0.96 and 0.55 respectively, whereas for regression model, they are 0.41 and 1.75 respectively, proving that the fuzzy predictor performs, significantly, better than the statistical method. Using the developed fuzzy model, the percentage of overbreak was minimized in the Alborz Tunnel.展开更多

For a single-layer network of Rulkov map neurons, there are three kinds of patterns induced by noise. Additive noise can induce ordered patterns at some intermediate noise intensities in a resonant way; however, for small and large noise intensities there exist excitable patterns and disordered patterns, respectively. For a neuronal network coupled by two single-layer networks with noise intensity differences between layers, we find that the two-layer network can achieve synchrony as the interlayer coupling strength increases. The synchronous states strongly depend on the interlayer coupling strength and the noise intensity difference between layers.展开更多

According to the framework, a parametric representation of each system component (e.g., layers of rock mass, size of excavation, topography, fault geometry, primary lining, secondary lining, rock bolts, etc.) can beincorporated in the GIS model with high levels of detail and used for the automatic generation of numerical models for the design oftunnel construction. This parametric evaluation allows the designer to consider several levels of detail for each component, for the effi-cient design and process optimization in conventional tunneling. Information between parametric analysis and numerical simulations canbe freely exchanged with significantly reduced computational effort while results can be exported into BIM. It is anticipated that the proposed framework could lead to a comprehensive, yet efficient analysis of complex conventional tunneling project using parametric evaluations at the early design stages.展开更多
