We analyze here the keys of the original approach about the twofold cost: the return to the asexuality starting with a mutant female, with the same reproductive capacity than a sexual one, and with double genetic-reproductive success. We propose a new approach in which 1) all individuals in a population have regulatory mechanisms of reproductive mode, and when such change occurs, it happens in all its population at the same time;2) after a change of reproductive mode in the population there can be variations in average offspring per female, according to the environmental quality;and 3) the genetic-reproductive success of the males and its unequal paternity success are accounted for. Results: The most advantageous reproductive strategy depends on the demographic situation of the population and the degree of the unequal paternity success of males. For harem values observed in nature and in populations with moderate growth rate, stable or decreasing population, the sexual strategy is advantageous. If the population growth rate is high, the asexual strategy is advantageous. In species subject to high demographic fluctuations the best strategy depends on the ability to predict the time of occurrence of the population bottleneck: if predictable, the best strategy is the alternation of generations, if not, permanent parthenogenesis. 展开更多

It includes five subspecies and is currently invasive in Europe. Since pre-Hispanic times, black cherry has been known and used by American inhabitants, and its botanical use was reported in the 19th century. The present study describes the taxonomic richness and taxonomic diversity of the species based on data from 554 taxonomically confirmed collection sites. Additionally, 19 climatic parameters were used to estimate the current and future potential distribution patterns of black cherry applying a climate change model to North America and Europe. Regions of northeast Mexico, northwestern Mexico, the Great American Basin, and the Mississippi River-Great Lakes region in the USA are shown as areas where taxa of P. serotina are present. The potential distribution model of black cherry in North America shows a continuous pattern starting in the Center of Mexico and following both main Mexican mountain ranges (Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental). The pattern extends following two different paths throughout northern Mexico toward the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians in the USA. Based on the NOAA-CCM3 climatic change model, decreased rainfall in wetlands will result in changes in future patterns in America. When applied to Europe, our model shows more extensive regions and more accurately than previous estimations;thus, the current potential distribution of the species includes important areas in the western part of the continent. The potential effect of climate change on P. serotina distribution suggests new and wider areas of possible invasion of this species throughout the continent mainly in France, Germany, and Italy. We suggest take into account the whole American taxa included in this species in the end to study its potential invasion in Europe and establishing suitable control strategies. 展开更多

This study contributes to the development of a valid and reliable instrument, Buddhist-based Spiritual Health of Thai University Students Instrument (SHTUSI). Participants were students from bachelor level of 15 faculties (N = 530), Prince of Songkla University, Hatyai Campus, Thailand. Content validity was examined by six experts (I-CVI = 1). Construct validity was evaluated by factor analysis with four latent factors: noble mind, moral living, mindful management, and attentive learning. The reliability coefficient of SHTUSI with 30 items was satisfactory value (Cronbach's α = .89). Each factor has good internal reliability which includes: (1) noble mind (Cronbach's α = .86); (2) moral living (Cronbach's a = .78); (3) mindful management (Cronbach's α = .77); and (4) attentive learning (Cronbach's α = .76). Furthermore, the test-retest reliability was .51 and the concurrent validity was tested by Thai Happiness Indicator with moderate correlation (Pearson's r = .574, p 〈 .01). The finding suggests that the development instrument has adequate validity and reliability. 展开更多

The current study aimed to evaluate the first aid knowledge and general awareness of bleeding control, and their relations with different variables among the population of Jazan City, Saudi Arabia, in 2023. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jazan City, Saudi Arabia between April 2023 and May 2023. Participants, >13 years old, living in Jazan City, were self-enrolled. Data collection was carried out by distributing a self-reported online survey questionnaire via email and social media apps. A validated, pretested online self-report questionnaire was used for data collection, with data analysis performed using (MS) Excel 2022 and SPSS version 26. A Chi-square test was used to determine the association of sociodemographic variables and Bleeding Control (BC) knowledge with, significance set at p < 0.05. A total of 250 participants completed the questionnaire, predominantly aged between 16 - 25 years, with 152 (60.8%) being male, and about 90% being Saudi citizens. Only 53 (21.2%) participated in previous first aid training concentrating on bleeding control. Only 76 (30.4%) of participants had good knowledge, while 131 (52.4%) exhibited positive attitude towards BC first aid. There were no statistically significant associations between BC knowledge and age, gender, occupation, nationality, and education. However, a significant association was observed between previous BC training and knowledge (Chi-test = 40.373, d.f = 1, p = 0.000) at p < 0.05. Conclusion: The prevalence of poor knowledge of bleeding control among community members in Jazan City was high. The findings of this study should be carefully considered by various healthcare organizations to implement educational first-aid programs and activities aimed at enhancing community awareness and knowledge of bleeding control. 展开更多

Hepatic fibrosis is a pathological process characterized by an imbalance between the deposition and degradation of extracellular matrix components. This process is initiated by chronic liver injuries resulting from viral infections, alcoholic liver disease,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and autoimmune-mediated hepatic damage. If left untreated, hepatic fibrosis can progress to life-threatening conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.Central to the development of fibrosis is the transdifferentiation of quiescent hepatic stellate cells(HSCs)into proliferative and fibrogenic myofibroblast-like activated HSCs(aHSCs),which play a crucial role in extracellular matrix accumulation and fibrotic tissue formation.Beyond resmetirom,a recently Food and Drug Administrationapproved medication for liver fibrosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, there are currently no other established pharmacological treatments available to slow down the progression of these conditions. Moreover, activation of HSCs and formation of hepatic fibrosis have been considered irreversible.Recent studies reported transforming growth factor beta as one of the key regulators of HSCs activation and pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. It has been also reported that the features of aHSCs can be reversed to those of quiescent HSCs by modulating transforming growth factor beta mediated pathways. The potential of extracellular vesicles(EVs)as cell free therapeutics to treat hepatic fibrosis has been suggested earlier. However, detailed knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the alleviation of hepatic fibrosis using EVs from mesenchymal stem cells is still lacking.Hence, this review aims to describe the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis from the cellular and molecular point of views and shed light on the potential of EVs from mesenchymal stem cells in reversing the properties of aHSCs to their quiescent state. 展开更多
