We aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of complementary and altemative medicine use among patients suffering from diabetes mellitus in Shiraz, southern Iran. Another objective was to explore associated factors for use of complementary and alternative medicine among patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A 19-item semi-structured questionnaire (open- and close-ended) was administered to 239 patients with diabetes mellitus in this cross-sectional study. It was carried out in two outpatient diabetes clinics affiliated with the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty patients (75.3%) used at least one type of complementary and alternative medicine in the last year prior to the interview. Patients with diabetes mellitus who were living in a large family (〉 5 members), not taking insulin, and believed that complementary and alternative medicine have synergistic effects with conventional medicine, were independently and significantly (P values: 0.02, 0.04, and 0.01, respectively) more likely to use complementary and alternative medicine. Most of the users (97.7%) reported use of herbal preparations, and 89.4% of users did not change their medication, neither in medication schedule nor its dosage. CONCLUSION: The use of complementary and alternative medicine, especially herbal remedies, is popular among diabetes patients in Shiraz, Iran. This use is associated with patients' family size, type of conventional medications and their view about concomitant use of complementary and conventional medicine.展开更多

During the Golden Age of Islam (8th to 13th century CE), the herbal drug trade promoted significant commercial and scientific exchange between China and the Muslim world. Chinese herbal drugs have been described by medieval Muslim medical scholars such as Tabari (870 CE), Rhazes (925 CE), Haly Abbas (982 CE), Avicenna (1037 CE) and Jurjani (1137 CE). The term al-sin (the Arabic word for China) is used 46 times in Avicenna's Canon of Medicine in reference to herbal drugs imported from China. Cinnamon (dar sini; "Chinese herb"), wild ginger (asaron), rhubarb (rivand-e sini), nutmeg (basbasa), incense tree wood (ood), cubeb (kababe) and sandalwood (sandal) were the most frequently mentioned Chinese herbs in Islamic medical books. There are also multiple similarities between the clinical uses of these herbs in both medical systems. It appears that Chinese herbal drugs were a major component of the exchange of goods and knowledge between China and the Islamic and later to the Western world amid this era.展开更多

The solubility of piperine has been determined in carbon dioxide at near critical and supercritical conditions in a dynamic extraction apparatus. The conditions studied were at pressures ranging from 10 to 20 MPa and temperatures at 293, 300, 313, 323 and 333 K. The results showed that piperine solubility increased with increasing pressure at all temperatures studied. The solubility of plperme in near critical conditions was slightly higher than that at supercritical conditions only at the low-pressure range. Two semi-empirical density dependent correlations, namely the Chrastil model and the Dilute Solution model, were also used to estimate the solubility data. Although both models showed good correlation with the solubility data, the Dilute Solution model performed better prediction than the Chrastil model.展开更多

Neonatal rats were randomly divided into two subgroups. Immature and mature rats were randomly divided into three subgroups. Experimental rats were fixed in the restraining tube and were exposed to radiofrequency radiations emitted from mobile jammers at a distance of 100 cm, for 30 d (7 h/d). Sham group rats were also fixed in restraining tube but without radiations. The control group was allowed to move freely without being exposed to radiation. At the end of the experiment, weight of testes, sperm quality, histological testicular sections and serum testosterone levels were evaluated. Results: Long-term exposure to radiofrequency from mobile jammers could adversely affect neonatal rat fertility, but it did not have significant effects on male mature and immature rat's reproduction parameters. However, restraint stress induced by immobilizing them for a long-period could adversely affect male mature rat's reproductive parameters, but it had no significant effect on male immature rat's reproduction parameters. Conclusion:The effects of EMF exposure to be various based on the life stage.展开更多

We show that based on a linear algebra theorem, the use of different polynomials such as Hermite, Bessel and Taylor in polynomial collocation methods for solving differential equations leads to an equal solution, and the difference in the numerical results arises from the difference in the coefficient matrix of final linear systems of equations. Some numerical examples will also be given.展开更多

Nerve growth factor (NGF) as modulator of neuro-endocrine-immune (NEI) system plays a critical role in tissue survival and homeostasis maintenance. It is a strong marker for sympathetic nerve activity. Women with PCO have enhanced ovarian NGF production. Over the past few decades, PCOS has been discussed as a low grade chronic inflammatory disease. In this study, we investigated the neuromodulator role of serum NGF and inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, β, 17A and TNF-α) in women with PCOS. Material and Methods: 171 patients were investigated in two groups: study (n = 85 PCO) and control (n = 86). Serum levels of NGF-α and interleukins IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-17A and TNFα were determined in both groups by ELISA kit. Results: Data of this study showed that the level of NGF-α and IL-17A in serum of PCO women were lower than control group (p α, IL-1β were higher than control group in PCO women (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Probably inflammatory background in PCOS is the main cause of increased serum levels of IL-1α, IL-1β. Reduction of IL-17A and NGF in serum of PCO patients might be under the direct influence of the hyperactivity of sympathetic nervous system (SNS).展开更多

In the same vein, forest concessions in the Congo Basin have increasing interest in the REDD+ mechanism. However, there is little information or field data on carbon emissions from forest degradation caused by logging. To help fill this gap, Landsat 7 and 8 and SPOT 4 images of the East Region of Cameroon were processed and combined with field measurements (measurement of forest roads widths, felling gaps and log yards) to assess all disturbed areas. Also, measurements of different types of forest infrastructures helped to highlight emission factors. Forest contributes to 5.18 % of the degradation of the annual allowable cut (AAC) (84.53 ha) corresponding to 4.09 % of forest carbon stock (6.92 t ha^-1). Felling gaps constitute the primary source of degradation, represented an estimated area of 32.41 ha (2 % of the cutting area) far ahead of primary roads (18.44ha) and skid trails (16.36 ha). Assessment of the impact of degradation under the canopy requires the use of high resolution satellite images and field surveys.展开更多

The herbal compound consisted of a mixture of 500 mg of P. ovate husk in 30 m L water plus three drops of vinegar per dose, which was used as a mouthwash. Phytochemical and physicochemical tests of the compound were also performed. Twenty-eight patients who developed mucositis during the chemotherapy screening cycle were randomized to the herbal compound(n = 14) and placebo(n = 14) groups. They received herbal compound or placebo three times per day during their next chemotherapy cycle(cycle 1 of treatment). Patients were crossed over during cycle 2 of treatment and received the alternative therapy. An oral care protocol was prescribed to all patients in cycles 1 and 2 of the treatment.Main outcome measures: The patients were visited at baseline, the end of the first and second weeks of the screening cycle, and the end of the first and second weeks of each of two treatment cycles. The degree of mucositis was used as the main treatment outcome. Other indexes, such as the severity of pain, xerostomia grade and the quality of life were also measured. Results: Compared with the placebo, the herbal compound significantly reduced the degree of mucositis, the severity of pain and the xerostomia grade;it also improved the patients’ quality of life(P < 0.05).Comparison between the screening cycle and placebo treatment group showed that the oral care protocol had a significant effect in the reduction of OM(P < 0.05).Conclusion: The oral care protocol and the herbal compound based on P. ovata are effective ways for preventing and treating OM in patients undergoing mucotoxic cancer therapy.Trial registration: Iranian registry of clinical trials IRCT20180923041093 N1.展开更多

In this study we determined the relationship between the time to sleep and serum levels of neurohormones in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Totally 77 PCO patients(case group) and 97 non-PCOS infertile women (control subjects) participated in this study between February 2012 and February 2013. A PSQI sleep questionnaire was completed by each patient in both groups. PSQI sleep questionnaire score and serum concentration of adrenaline, noradrenaline, melatonin, β-endorphin, cortisol and progesterone were compared in two groups. The results of the study indicate that serum levels of melatonin and β-endorphin were lower in women with PCOS. Serum level of stress hormones, adrenaline and noradrenaline were significantly correlated with patients’ sleep time in study group. Serum level of adrenaline in control group was significantly lower in women who wake up earlier in the morning. All hormones except for cortisol had no significant correlation with PSQI global score in both groups and also the people who sleep less than 8 hours had lower cortisol level. These data showed that changes in cortisol in PCO women were due to damage of disturbed sleep at night. Our preliminary work provided this study with new insight into the interactions between sleep-wake cycles in PCO women with specific sleep patterns.展开更多

Magnetic-silver nanostructures were prepared through the reduction of silver ions in the presence of iron oxide nanoparticles using three different reducing agents (glucose, maltose and sodium citrate). Their physicochemical characteristics were determined using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Cytotoxic activities were evaluated against a human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line. Fabricated nanostructures, which exhibit differences in size, silver content, magnetic saturation value and cytotoxicity, represent sufficient superparamagnetic properties and considerable cytotoxicity to be suggested as effective tools in magnetic targeting of silver nanoparticles as an approach to cancer therapy.展开更多

文摘Groundwater is considered as one of the most important sources for water supply in Iran. The Fasa Plain in Fars Province,Southern Iran is one of the major areas of wheat production using groundwater for irrigation.A large population also uses local groundwater for drinking purposes. Therefore,in this study, this plain was selected to assess the spatial variability of groundwater quality and also to identify main parameters affecting the water quality using multivariate statistical techniques such as Cluster Analysis(CA),Discriminant Analysis(DA),and Principal Component Analysis(PCA).Water quality data was monitored at 22 different wells, for five years(2009-2014)with 10 water quality parameters.By using cluster analysis, the sampling wells were grouped into two clusters with distinct water qualities at different locations. The Lasso Discriminant Analysis(LDA)technique was used to assess the spatial variability of water quality.Based on the results, all of the variables except sodium absorption ratio(SAR)are effective in the LDA model with all variables affording 92.80%correct assignation to discriminate between the clusters from the primary 10 variables.Principal component(PC)analysis and factor analysis reduced the complex data matrix into two main components, accounting for more than 95.93%of the total variance. The first PC contained the parameters of TH,Ca2+,and Mg2+.Therefore,the first dominant factor was hardness. In the second PC,Cl-,SAR,and Na+were the dominant parameters, which may indicate salinity. The originally acquired factors illustrate natural(existence of geological formations)and anthropogenic(improper disposal of domestic and agricultural wastes)factors which affect the groundwater quality.
文摘This paper aims to evaluate the stochastic response of steel columns subjected to blast loads using the modified single degree of freedom(MSDOF)method, which assessed towards the conventional single degree of freedom(SDOF)and the experimentally validated Finite Element(FE)methods(LSDYNA).For this purpose, special atten-tion is given to calculating the response of H-shaped steel columns under blast. The damage amount is determined based on the support rotation criterion, which is expressed as a function of their maximum lateral mid-span dis-placement.To account for uncertainties in input parameters and obtain the failure probability, the Monte Carlo simulation(MCS)method is employed, complemented by the Latin Hypercube Sampling(LHS)method to reduce the number of simulations.A parametric analysis is hence performed to examine the effect of several input pa-rameters(including both deterministic and probabilistic parameters)on the probability of column damage as a function of support rotation.First, the MSDOF method confirms its higher accuracy in estimating the probability of column damage due to blast, compared to the conventional SDOF.The collected results also show that un-certainties of several input parameters have significant effects on the column behavior. In particular, geometric parameters(including cross-sectional characteristics, boundary conditions and column length)have major effect on the corresponding column response,in the same way of input blast load parameters and material properties.

文摘OBJECTIVE: There is increasing interest in complementary and alternative medicine generally, and especially by those affected by chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus. This use is associated with patients' family size, type of conventional medications and their view about concomitant use of complementary and conventional medicine.
文摘This paper investigates some of the ways that Chinese medicine has been transferred to the Western world and to Islamic territories. It appears that Chinese herbal drugs were a major component of the exchange of goods and knowledge between China and the Islamic and later to the Western world amid this era.

文摘Piperine is a member of the lipids family commonly found in peppercorn, ginger and other natural sources and is grouped as an alkaloid. Although both models showed good correlation with the solubility data, the Dilute Solution model performed better prediction than the Chrastil model.
文摘Objective:To evaluate the effect of long-term exposure to radiofrequency radiations emitted from mobile jammers onrat's reproductive parameters. Methods: Eighty male rats were divided into neonatal group (n=20), immature group (n=30) and mature group (n=30). Conclusion:The effects of EMF exposure to be various based on the life stage.
文摘BACKGROUND:Rheum ribes L.is a plant native to China,Iran,Turkey,India, and a few other countries.Antidiarrheal activity is considered to be one of its important properties according to various systems of traditional medicine. An increasing rate of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has led to treatment failure in some cases of shigellosis in children, and underlines a need for safe, efficient and valid options.OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of R.ribes syrup as a complementary medicine for treatment of shigellosis in children.DESIGN,SETTING,PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS:This randomized, doubleblind, placebocontrolled trial started with a group of 150 children aged between 12–72 months with suspected Shigella dysentery.R.ribes syrup or placebo syrup was administered to the intervention and control groups, respectively for 5 days.In addition, the standard antibiotic treatment(ceftriaxone for the first 3 days and cefixime syrup for 2 further days)was administered to both groups.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Body temperature, abdominal pain, need for antipyretics, defecation frequency, stool volume and consistency and microscopic stool examination were recorded as outcome measures.Any observed adverse effects were also recorded.RESULTS:Mean duration of fever and diarrhea in the R.ribes group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group(P=0.016 and 0.001,respectively).In addition, patients in the R.ribes group showed shorter duration of need for antipyretics and shorter duration of abdominal pain(P=0.012 and 0.001,respectively).However,there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the microscopic stool analyses.Furthermore,no adverse effect was reported.CONCLUSION:R.ribes syrup can be recommended as a complementary treatment for children with Shigella dysentery.
文摘Functionalized hydrogels stimulate the migration and morphogenesis of endothelial cells(ECs)and are useful substrates for wound healing. The present study investigates the feasibility of covalent conjugation of taurine(Tau)on a gelatin-based hydrogel. This hydrogel is expected to maintain positive charged growth factors such as basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF)and vascular endothelial growth factors(VEGFs)near ECs within the hydrogel microenvironment. The gelatin was conjugated with hydroxyl phenol(Ph)and Tau moieties, and in following that Ph residues were crosslinked through a horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed reaction. The migration characteristics of ECs were analyzed by scratch migration assay and microparticle-based cell migration assay.Cellular morphology and amounts of angiopoietin 1(Ang 1),bFGF,and VEGF proteins were evaluated for encapsulated cells. The potential of synthesized hydrogels in wound healing was assessed by the percentage of reduction from the original wound size and histopathological analyses of rat skin. The incorporated Tau molecules within the hydrogel remained stable through covalent bonds during incubation.During extended incubation, the gelatin-based hydrogel conjugated with Tau improved the migration distance and number of existing migrated ECs.Immobilized Tau within the gelatin-based hydrogel induced high motility of ECs,accompanied by robust cytoskeleton extension and a cell subpopulation that expressed CD44 and CD31 receptors as well as enhancement of Ang 1,bFGF,and VEGF.We found that injectable Gel-Ph-Tau effectively improves wound-healing parameters.
文摘In this paper, we introduce a Hermite operational matrix collocation method for solving higher-order linear complex differential equations in rectangular or elliptic domains. Some numerical examples will also be given.
文摘Introduction: This study aimed to discuss about neuroimmune-pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Reduction of IL-17A and NGF in serum of PCO patients might be under the direct influence of the hyperactivity of sympathetic nervous system (SNS).

文摘Forest logging in the Congo Basin has led to forest fragmentation due to logging infrastructures and felling gaps. Assessment of the impact of degradation under the canopy requires the use of high resolution satellite images and field surveys.

文摘Background: Oral mucositis(OM) is one of the most common complications of mucotoxic cancer therapy.Mucositis induces clinically significant pain, increases the risk of infections and affects the patients’ quality of life. Objective: This study investigated the effects of an herbal preparation from Plantago ovata hydrocolloid in the prevention and treatment of OM, in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with a regimen including adriamycin.Design, setting, participants, and interventions: This research was a double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover trial. Results: Compared with the placebo, the herbal compound significantly reduced the degree of mucositis, the severity of pain and the xerostomia grade;it also improved the patients’ quality of life(P < 0.05).Comparison between the screening cycle and placebo treatment group showed that the oral care protocol had a significant effect in the reduction of OM(P < 0.05).Conclusion: The oral care protocol and the herbal compound based on P. ovata are effective ways for preventing and treating OM in patients undergoing mucotoxic cancer therapy.Trial registration: Iranian registry of clinical trials IRCT20180923041093 N1.
文摘Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex, multifaceted, heterogeneous disorder, affecting 4% to 18% of reproductive-aged women and is associated with reproductive, metabolic and psychological dysfunction. Our preliminary work provided this study with new insight into the interactions between sleep-wake cycles in PCO women with specific sleep patterns.

文摘The contamination of fish type products such as silver pomfret fish fillets by potentially toxic elements(PTEs)has raised global health concerns.Related studies regarding the concentration of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish were retrieved among some international databases such as Scopus,Pub Med and Embase between 1 January 1983 and 10 March 2020.The pooled(mean)concentration of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish was meta-analyzed with the aid of a random-effect model(REM).Also, the non-carcinogenic risk was estimated via calculating the 95 th percentile of the total target hazard quotient(TTHQ).The meta-analysis of 21 articles(containing 25 studies or data reports)indicated that the ranking of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish was Fe(11,414.81μg/kg wet weight,ww)>Zn(6055.72μg/kg ww)>Cr(1825.79μg/kg ww)>Pb(1486.44μg/kg ww)>Se(1053.47μg/kg ww)>Cd(992.50μg/kg ww)>Ni(745.23μg/kg ww)>Cu(669.71μg/kg ww)>total As(408.24μg/kg ww)>Co(87.03μg/kg ww)>methyl Hg(46.58μg/kg ww).The rank order of health risk assessment by country based on the TTHQ for adult consumers was Malaysia(2.500)>Bangladesh(0.886)>Iran(0.144)>China(0.045)>Pakistan(0.020)>India(0.015),while the corresponding values for child consumers was Malaysia(11.790)>Bangladesh(4.146)>Iran(0.675)>China(0.206)>Pakistan(0.096)>India(0.077).The adult consumers in Malaysia and children in Malaysia and Bangladesh were at considerable non-carcinogenic risk. Therefore, following the recommended control plans in order to reduce the health risk associated with the ingestion of PTEs via consumption of silver pomfret fish fillets is crucial.

文摘Magnetic-silver nanostructures were synthesized via optimized chemical conditions, and their characteristics and cytotoxicity were compared as candidates for the magnetic delivery of silver nanoparticles toward cancer cells. Fabricated nanostructures, which exhibit differences in size, silver content, magnetic saturation value and cytotoxicity, represent sufficient superparamagnetic properties and considerable cytotoxicity to be suggested as effective tools in magnetic targeting of silver nanoparticles as an approach to cancer therapy.
文摘Rationale:Cystic echinococcosis(hydatid disease)is a parasitic infection of humans, but renal hydatid cyst is rare.It is even more uncommon to find hydatid cyst and renal cell carcinoma(RCC)synchronously in one kidney.Patient concerns:This report presents a 47 years old Iranian man with the chief complaint of lower abdominal pain.Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomographic scan was performed for more evaluation.Diagnosis:RCC was the most probable diagnosis,so he went under left total nephrectomy.Eventually, after histopathologic examination of the excised kidney, cystic echinococcosis came to the first line and papillary RCC was the second diagnosis.Outcomes and lessons:Diagnosis of hydatid cyst and RCC is mostly based on imaging, but,as we noticed in this case, distinguishing between these two may sometimes be difficult due to radiological similarities.
文摘The first photometric light curve investigation of the NSVS 8294044,V1023 Her,and V1397 Her binary systems is presented. We used ground-based observations for the NSVS 8294044 system and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data for V1023 Her and V1397 Her.The primary and secondary times of minima were extracted from al the data, and,by collecting the literature,a new ephemeris was computed for each system.Linear fits for the O-C diagrams were conducted using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method.Light curve solutions were performed using the PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs Python code and the MCMC approach. The systems were found to be contact binary stars based on the fillout factor and mass ratio.V1023 Her showed the O’Connell effect and a cold starspot on the secondary component was required for the light curve solution. The absolute parameters of the system were estimated based on an empirical relationship between orbital period and mass.We presented a new T–M equation based on a sample of 428 contact binary systems and found that our three target systems were in good agreement with the fit.The positions of the systems were also depicted on the M–L,M–R,q–L_(ratio),and M_(tot)–J_(0)diagrams in the logarithmic scales.
文摘Cherenkov free electron laser(CFEL)is simulated numerically by using the single particle method to optimize the electron beam. The electron beam is assumed to be moving near the surface of a flat dielectric slab along a growing radiation. The set of coupled nonlinear differential equations of motion is solved to study the electron dynamics. For three sets of parameters,in high power CFEL,it is found that an axial magnetic field is always necessary to keep the electron beam in the interaction region and its optimal strength is reported for each case.At the injection point, the electron beam’s distance above the dielectric surface is kept at a minimum value so that the electrons neither hit the dielectric nor move away from it to the weaker radiation fields and out of the interaction region. The optimal electron beam radius and current are thereby calculated. This analysis is in agreement with two previous numerical studies for a cylindrical waveguide but is at odds with analytical treatments of a flat dielectric that does not use an axial magnetic field. This is backed by an interesting physical reasoning.
