AIM:To investigate the role of exercise training the past 25 years on major physiological-psychological outcomes studied thus far in this patient population.METHODS:Pub Med, Medline Plus, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SportD iscus, Embase, Scorpus, and Google Scholar were searched from September to November 2013 to identify exercise training studies that used objective measurements of fitness and/or patient reported outcomes assessed pre and post-exercise training with statistical analyses performed in at least one of the following outcome measurements:Cardiorespiratory function, body composition, muscular strength, fatigue, depression, and overall quality of life. Five reviewers independently identified the studies that met the criteria for the review and discrepancies were resolved by consensus among all authors.RESULTS:Fifty-one studies were included in this review with 5 from the period between 1989-1999, 11 from 2000-2006, and 35 from 2007-2013. The evolution of study designs changed from aerobic only exercise training interventions(1989-1999), to a combination of aerobic and resistance training(2000-2006), to studies including an arm of resistance training or examining the effects of resistance training as the main mode of exercise(2007-2013). Overall, the benefits of exercise showed improvements in cardiorespiratory function, body composition, strength, and patient reported outcomes including fatigue, depression, and quality of life.CONCLUSION:Exercise training appears to be safe for most breast cancer patients and improvements in physiological, psychological, and functional parameters can be attained with regular participation in moderate intensity exercise. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to examine the circulatory-respiratory dynamics in elderly people during Tai Chi Yuttari-exercise. The subjects were females with an average age of 74 years who had been continuously practicing Tai Chi Yuttari-exercise for at least six months. The heart rate and blood pressure were measured before and after the subjects performed four different versions of Tai Chi Yuttari-exercise. The perceived exertion was evaluated using the Borg scale. The respiratory rate, oxygen uptake and respiratory quotient (RQ) were measured using an expired gas analyzer. The results showed an increase in heart rate during exercise, but confirmed that the rise in HR was below the safety limit. The blood pressure tended to be low post-exercise. Regarding perceived exertion, the maximum heart-lungs Borg scale response was 9 (very light). A slight increase in the respiratory rate was observed while exercising, but no abnormal breathing patterns were observed. The average metabolic equivalents (METs) of the exercise ranged from 1.34 to 1.87, and the average RQ ranged from 0.82 to 0.90. The circulatory-respiratory dynamics observed in this study verified that elderly females with an average age of 70 years could safely perform the Tai Chi Yuttari-exercise. This study helped obtain basic data for expanding the indications for this exercise. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate the use of photogrammetry and identify the mathematical procedures applied when evaluating spinal posture.METHODS:A systematic search using keywords was conducted in the Pub Med,EMBASE,Scopus,Science and Medicine®databases. The following inclusion criteria adopted were:(1)the use of photogrammetry as a method to evaluate spinal posture;(2)evaluations of spinal curvature in the sagittal and/or frontal plane;(3)studies published within the last three decades;and(4)written entirely in English. The exclusion criteria were:(1)studies which objective involved the verification of some aspect of validation of instruments;(2)studies published as abstracts and those published in scientific events;and(3)studies using evaluation of the anteriorization of the head to determine the angular positioning of the cervical spine. The articles in this review were included and evaluated for their methodological quality, based on the Downs and Black scale,by two independent reviewers.RESULTS:Initially,1758 articles were found,76 of which were included upon reading the full texts and 29 were included in accordance with the predetermined criteria. In addition, after analyzing the references in those articles,a further six articles were selected,so that 35 articles were included in this review. This systematic review revealed that the photogrammetry has been using in observational studies.Furthermore,it was also found that, although the data collection methodologies are similar across the studies,in relation to aspects of data analysis, the methodologies are very different, especially regarding the mathematical routines employed to support different postural evaluation software.CONCLUSION:With photogrammetry, the aim of the assessment, whether it is for clinical, research or collective health purposes, must be considered when choosing which protocol to use to evaluate spinal posture. 展开更多

With a plethora of anthropometric and body composition measurements, may be challenging for soccer technical staff determining the most suitable protocol for their players. Objectives:Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the correlations of anthropometric measures and fat percentage obtained by different protocols with the physical performance of male professional soccer players.Additionally, the study aimed to propose cutoff points for anthropometric measures and fat percentage.Methods:Fifty-two male soccer players(24.60±4.98 years)from a state championship’s second division participated. The sum of skinfolds and fat percentage were obtained using four reference protocols(Pollock seven-skinfolds,Jackson and Pollock three-skinfolds,Jackson and Pollock threeskinfolds of the upper limbs, and Faulkner four-skinfolds).Physical performance was assessed by squat jump, counter movement jump,30 cm drop jump,20m sprint, and YoYo intermittent recovery level 1(YoYoIRL1)tests.Pearson,Spearman,and ROC curve analysis were used considering α<0.05 as significance level. Results:Significant correlations occurred between the abdominal skinfold(r=−0.579),chest,abdominal,and front thigh skinfolds sum(rho=−0.518),and the Jackson and Pollock fat percentage protocol using these skinfolds(r=−0.534)with the YoYoIRL1(all p<0.001).Cutoff points for these measurements were determined to be 20mm(area under the curve(AUC)=0.800,sensitivity=92.7%,specificity=63.6%),33mm(AUC=0.783,sensitivity=68.3%,specificity=81.8%),and 13%(AUC=0.787,sensitivity=95.1%,specificity=54.5%),respectively.Conclusions:Therefore,the soccer technical staff can implement these measures, largely associated with physical performance,in players with characteristics similar to the evaluated group. The proposed cut-off points provide a practical alternative for integration into other monitoring strategies. 展开更多
