An assessment of the human motion repeatability for three selected Activities of Daily Living(ADL)is performed in this paper.These exercises were prescribed by an occupational therapist for the upper limb rehabilitation.The movement patterns of five participants,recorded using a Qualisys motion capture system,are compared based on the Analysis of Variance(ANOVA)method.This survey is motivated by the need to find the appropriate task workspace of a 6-degrees of freedom cable-driven parallel robot for upper limb rehabilitation,which is able to reproduce the three selected exercises.This comparison is performed to justify,whether or not,there is enough similarity between the participants’gestures,and so a single reference trajectory can be adopted as the robot-prescribed workspace.Using the results of the comparative study,an optimization process of the sought robot design is carried out,where the structure size and the cable tensions simultaneously minimized. 展开更多

Induced BVOC emissions from pyrolyzed plants that may accumulate in confined topographies have been a controversy for their role in wildfire eruptions or flashovers. α-pinene (C<sub>10</sub>H<sub>16</sub>) is one of the most abundant monoterpenes emitted from pyrolyzed Mediterranean vegetation in wildfires. Its thermal degradation under fire thermal stresses produces a range of highly flammable gases. In order to identify these products, thermal degradation experiments were performed on α-pinene in a tubular furnace in an inert atmosphere and a high-temperature range (300&deg;C - 900&deg;C). The pyrolysis products were identified using gas chromatography (GC) linked to a tubular furnace outlet by which their retention times were compared with those of reference standards. The degradation products were mainly terpenoids, aliphatic hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, 1,3-butadiene, isoprene), and aromatics (benzene, toluene) in addition to hydrogen. The radical mechanisms of the chemical reactions associated with the formation of the products at different experimental temperatures were addressed and compared with the literature. Monoterpenes, butadiene, isoprene, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aromatics formations from α-pinene were consistent with the literature. However, even if benzene has been identified in our experiments, we cannot support with certainty the mechanisms of its formation described in the literature since acetylene was not observed. 展开更多

This paper concerns the study of the influence of the proportion of plastic from polyethylene, on the yields of gas emissions during the combustion of the mixture of “millet stalks and polyethylene plastic bags”, in a prototype of kiln of potters. During these investigations, we looked at the rate of residual oxygen (O2) and emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen monoxide (NO), as a function of primary air flow (Q1) and secondary airflow (Q2). The potter’s kilns are considered those fueled by natural air flow. The primary air flows ranging from 45 to 85 Nm3?h 1 and secondary air flows from 20 to 60 Nm3?h 1. To conduct this numerical study, the model used is “reactor” based on the code CHEMKIN II. The modeled area is composed into a multitude of perfectly stirred reactors (PSR) and the kinetic model has 893 species and 113 reversible chemical reactions. The results show that in our test conditions, the increasing of the rate of plastic in the mixture produces a decrease of the residual oxygen content, due to higher oxygen consumption regardless of the airflow. The CO2 emissions are an increasing function of the rate of plastic (polyethylene) in the fuel mixture. Finally, NO emissions are increasing functions of the mass of plastic for a proportions less than or equal to 20%, and are essentially controlled by the temperature of the reactional medium. 展开更多

Laser-driven ramp compression was used to investigate iron characteristics along the isentropic path. The iterative Lagrangian analysis method was employed to analyze the free surface velocity profiles in iron stepped target measured with two VISARs. The onset stress for the α to ε phase transformation was determined from the sudden change in the sound velocity and was found over-pressurized compared to the static and shock results. The derived stress(26 GPa) and strain rate(up to 10-8 s^-1) are consistent with our previous experimental results. The stress-density relations were compared with those from previous ramp experiments and good agreements were found, which experimentally confirms the simulations,showing that iterative Lagrangian analysis can be applied to the ramp-compression data with weak shock. 展开更多

A compressible and multiphase flows solver has been developed for the study of liquid/gas flows involving shock waves and strong expansion waves leading to cavitation.This solver has a structure similar to those of the one-fluid Euler solvers,differing from them by the presence of a void ratio transport-equation.The model and the system of equations to be simulated are presented.Results are displayed for shock and expansion tube problems,shock-bubble interaction and underwater explosion.Close agreement with reference solutions,obtained from explicit finite volume approaches,is demonstrated.Different numerical methods are additionally displayed to provide comparable and improved computational efficiency to the model and the system of equations.The overall procedure is therefore very well suited for use in general two-phase fluid flow simulations. 展开更多

Purpose-The study of the skyline queries has received considerable attention from several database researchers since the end of 2000’s.Skyline queries are an appropriate tool that can help users to make intelligent decisions in the presence of multidimensional data when different,and often contradictory criteria are to be taken into account.Based on the concept of Pareto dominance,the skyline process extracts the most interesting(not dominated in the sense of Pareto)objects from a set of data.Skyline computation methods often lead to a set with a large size which is less informative for the end users and not easy to be exploited.The purpose of this paper is to tackle this problem,known as the large size skyline problem,and propose a solution to deal with it by applying an appropriate refining process.Design/methodology/approach-The problem of the skyline refinement is formalized in the fuzzy formal concept analysis setting.Then,an ideal fuzzy formal concept is computed in the sense of some particular defined criteria.By leveraging the elements of this ideal concept,one can reduce the size of the computed Skyline.Findings-An appropriate and rational solution is discussed for the problem of interest.Then,a tool,named SkyRef,is developed.Rich experiments are done using this tool on both synthetic and real datasets.Research limitations/implications-The authors have conducted experiments on synthetic and some real datasets to show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.However,thorough experiments on large-scale real datasets are highly desirable to show the behavior of the tool with respect to the performance and time execution criteria.Practical implications-The tool developed SkyRef can have many domains applications that require decision-making,personalized recommendation and where the size of skyline has to be reduced.In particular,SkyRef can be used in several real-world applications such as economic,security,medicine and services.Social implications-This work can be expected in all domains that require decision-making like hotel finder,restaurant recommender,recruitment of candidates,etc.Originality/value-This study mixes two research fields artificial intelligence(i.e.formal concept analysis)and databases(i.e.skyline queries).The key elements of the solution proposed for the skyline refinement problem are borrowed from the fuzzy formal concept analysis which makes it clearer and rational,semantically speaking.On the other hand,this study opens the door for using the formal concept analysis and its extensions in solving other issues related to skyline queries,such as relaxation. 展开更多

We propose here an experimental investigation of a vortex submitted to a radial perturbation while being compressed. This experiment reproduces a model situation of the complex flows that take place in a real engine cylinder. An isolated tumbling flow is first submitted to an injection of fluid and then compressed and measurements are realised by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition is known to be an unbiased method to identify the coherent structures of turbulent flows. It is possible to make this decomposition for a given phase or to create a set of basis functions with the whole set of compression stroke velocity fields.First, the experimental set-up will be presented, then the second part provides the POD principle. Results of phased POD decomposition of the compression of the unperturbated vortex will be presented. Finally results from the time invariant POD will be discussed to study the influence of the jet perturbation in the compression of a vortex. 展开更多
