The current management of acquired hearing impairment in adults is usually in the form of hearing aids. An auditory rehabilitation programme may or may not be provided although literature suggests that such programmes may enhance hearing aid benefits. This study was conducted in an Arabic-speaking country, specifically Saudi Arabia, and is the first to develop an auditory rehabilitation intervention programme in the Arabic language that focuses on working age adults who are new hearing aid users. Randomised intervention study design. Thirty-five participants with mild to severe acquired hearing loss (intervention group n = 18, control group n = 17). Significant changes were found in the performance of the intervention group in the Minimal Audible Capabilities (MAC) test, a lip reading test and the Glasgow Hearing Aid Benefit Profile (GHABP) questionnaire when compared with the control group. No significant difference was found in speech test scores between the two groups. A short individualised auditory rehabilitation intervention programme can yield a significant improvement in the performance of hearing impaired adults by enhancing the benefits of hearing aid use.展开更多

Chinese herbal medicine industry is an important component of the great health industry. Yunnan is the region with the richest biodiversity in the same latitude in the world. Among them, the diversity and superiority of medicinal plants are prominent. Chinese herbal medicines are rich in varieties, high in quality, significant in geographical indications and huge in production capacity, which is an important support for Yunnan to build a world-class "three cards". However, as a biodiversity area, the innovation and development of Chinese herbal medicine resources in Yunnan are not enough, the industrial restructuring and aggregation are insufficient, and the industrial cluster with high correlation, long chain and multi engines has not yet been formed, and the development potential of its diversity and superiority is far from being released. To this end, we will carry out resource reorganization around the development of the Chinese herbal medicine industry, explore the development path of "museum + industrial cluster" of Chinese herbal medicine, integrate and link the three industries, build an "aircraft carrier" for the development of the whole industrial chain cluster, and promote the development of Yunnan Chinese herbal medicine into a 100 billion and trillion level health industry.展开更多

BACKGROUND Sterol O-acyltransferase 1(SOAT1)is an important target in the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer.However,the prognostic value of SOAT1 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is still not clear....BACKGROUND Sterol O-acyltransferase 1(SOAT1)is an important target in the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer.However,the prognostic value of SOAT1 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is still not clear.AIM To investigate the correlation of SOAT1 expression with HCC,using RNA-seq and gene expression data of The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)-liver hepatocellular carcinoma(LIHC)and pan-cancer.METHODS The correlation between SOAT1 expression and HCC was analyzed.Cox hazard regression models were conducted to investigate the prognostic value of SOAT1 in HCC.Overall survival and disease-specific survival were explored based on TCGA-LIHC data.Biological processes and functional pathways mediated by SOAT1 were characterized by gene ontology(GO)analysis and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)analysis of differentially expressed genes.In addition,the protein-protein interaction network and co-expression analyses of SOAT1 in HCC were performed to better understand the regulatory mechanisms of SOAT1 in this malignancy.RESULTS SOAT1 and SOAT2 were highly expressed in unpaired samples,while only SOAT1 was highly expressed in paired samples.The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of SOAT1 expression in tumor samples from LIHC patients compared with para-carcinoma tissues was 0.748,while the area under the curve of SOAT1 expression in tumor samples from LIHC patients compared with GTEx was 0.676.Patients with higher SOAT1 expression had lower survival rates.Results from GO/KEGG and gene set enrichment analyses suggested that the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway,the IL-18 signaling pathway,the calcium signaling pathway,secreted factors,the Wnt signaling pathway,the Jak/STAT signaling pathway,the MAPK family signaling pathway,and cell–cell communication were involved in such association.SOAT1 expression was positively associated with the abundance of macrophages,Th2 cells,T helper cells,CD56bright natural killer cells,and Th1 cells,and negatively linked to the abundance of Th17 cells,dendritic cells,and cytotoxic cells.CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrate that SOAT1 may serve as a novel target for HCC treatment,which is helpful for the development of new strategies for immunotherapy and metabolic therapy.展开更多

Introduction:Current land use in the Federal District,Western Central Brazil,causes problems related to the water supply which are linked to the regulation of ecosystem services(ES).In scope of an Integrated Water Res...Introduction:Current land use in the Federal District,Western Central Brazil,causes problems related to the water supply which are linked to the regulation of ecosystem services(ES).In scope of an Integrated Water Resources Management concept,we further developed the web-based planning support tool GISCAME for the Pipiripau river basin case study.Methods:We introduced analyses on ecosystem potentials in the raster-based tool to assess,in a spatially explicit manner,the scenario impact on water purification,sediment retention,water retention,and provision of food and fodder in order to identify potential pathways for conserving water resources.To demonstrate the method,we assess ES depending on a number of land use/land cover change(LULCC)scenarios.Results:We found that a considerable increase of water purification and sediment retention is difficult to achieve with realistic small scale LULCC,mainly because in areas with a low potential to provide hydrological ES and thus with a high demand for sustainable land use,such as native Savanna(Cerrado)and natural forests(Mata),favorable land uses were often already existing.We observed synergies in the response of regulating hydrological ES to LULCC but at the same time also trade-offs with provision of food and fodder.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that further degradation and loss of Cerrado and Mata must be avoided and their restoration should be promoted in order to safeguard water resources.We suggest that restoration measures should be focused on arable land located at steep slopes near surface waters to effectively increase hydrological ES through the marginal reduction of provision services.展开更多
