Rapid post-earthquake safety assessment of low-rise reinforced concrete structures

Many countries throughout the world have experienced large earthquakes,which cause building damage or collapse.After such earthquakes,structures must be inspected rapidly to judge whether they are safe to reoccupy.To facilitate the inspection process,the authors previously developed a rapid building safety assessment system using sparse acceleration measurements for steel framed buildings.The proposed system modeled nonlinearity in the measurement data using a calibrated simplified lumped-mass model and convolutional neural networks(CNNs),based on which the buildinglevel damage index was estimated rapidly after earthquakes.The proposed system was validated for a nonlinear 3D numerical model of a five-story steel building,and later for a large-scale specimen of an 18-story building in Japan tested on the E-Defense shaking table.However,the applicability of the safety assessment system for reinforced concrete(RC)structures with complex hysteretic material nonlinearity has yet to be explored;the previous approach based on a simplified lumpedmass model with a Bouc-Wen hysteretic model does not accurately represent the inherent nonlinear behavior and resulting damage states of RC structures.This study extends the rapid building safety assessment system to low-rise RC moment resisting frame structures representing typical residential apartments in Japan.First,a safety classification for RC structures based on a damage index consistent with the current state of practice is defined.Then,a 3D nonlinear numerical model of a two-story moment frame structure is created.A simplified lumped-mass nonlinear model is developed and calibrated using the 3D model,incorporating the Takeda degradation model for the RC material nonlinearity.This model is used to simulate the seismic response and associated damage sensitive features(DSF)for random ground motion.The resulting database of responses is used to train a convolutional neural network(CNN)that performs rapid safety assessment.The developed system is validated using the 3D nonlinear analysis model subjected to historical earthquakes.The results indicate the applicability of the proposed system for RC structures following seismic events. 展开更多

To study the dynamic response rules of pile foundations of mega-bridges over faults in strong seismic areas,a finite element model of the pile foundation-soil-fault interaction of the Haiwen Bridge is established.The 0.2-0.6 g peak acceleration of the 5010 seismic waves is input to study the effect of the seismic wave of different intensities and the distance changes between the fault and the pile foundation on the dynamic response of the pile body.The results show that the soil layer covering the bedrock amplifies the peak pile acceleration,and the amplifying effect decreases with increasing seismic wave intensity.However,bedrock has less of an effect on peak acceleration.The relative pile displacement shows the mechanical properties of elastic long piles.The pile foundation generates a large bending moment at the bedrock face and the upper soil layer interface,and a large shear force at the pile top and the soft-hard soil body interface.The relative displacement,bending,and shear bearing characteristics of the pile foundations on the upper and lower plates of the fault are significantly different.The deformation characteristics are affected by faults in a region ten times the pile diameter.Analysis of the dynamic p-y curves shows that the soil resistance on the pile side of the lower plate at the same depth is greater than that of the upper plate.Sensitivity of the dynamic response of pile foundations on either side of the fault to the effects of seismic intensity and distance between the pile foundation and the fault:distance l seismic intensity q. 展开更多

In this study,the effect of annealing on the microstructure and following corrosion and biological properties of Mg-1.0Ca-0.5Zn-0.1Y-0.03Mn(at.%)alloy prepared by rapid solidified powder metallurgy was investigated.The annealing at 300℃ for 2 h did not change the grain size significantly;however,a slight growth of Mg_(2)Ca precipitates was observed.When the annealing temperature increased up to 400℃ for 2 h,full recrystallization of the alloy occurred;the grains and precipitates grew noticeably.Those changes were responsible for decreasing the corrosion and the tribocorrosion resistance of the alloy.Due to lowered resistance to the corrosion medium,the cell viability was also reduced.Although MG63 cells on the annealed specimens developed filopodia,cell-to-cell communication was not observed. 展开更多

Based on Pareto optimum solution, the detailed parameters at lower level can be defined into the independent axiom. The suspension design was used as the simulation example. In an axiomatic design for the optimization design, the uncoupled and decoupled designs between functional requirements and design parameters are generally needed. But using the design sensitivity(or screening) of design parameters, the approximate uncoupled design is developed on behalf of the decoupled and coupled designs. Successive design parameters were applied to the suspension of torsion beam axle. The structural performance increases by 18%. The kinematic and compliance performance increases by 6% within the feasible ranges. 展开更多

Traditional clothing design models based on adaptive meshes cannot reflect.To solve this problem,a clothing simulation design model based on 3D image analysis technology is established.The model uses feature extraction and description of image evaluation parameters,and establishes the mapping relationship between image features and simulation results by using the optimal parameter values,thereby obtaining a three-dimensional image simulation analysis environment.On the basis of this model,by obtaining the response results of clothing collision detection and the results of local adaptive processing of clothing meshes,the cutting form and actual cutting effect of clothing are determined to construct a design model.The simulation results show that compared with traditional clothing design models,clothing simulation design based on 3D image analysis technology has a better effect,with the definition of fabric folds increasing by 40%.More striking contrast between light and dark,the resolution increasing by 30%,and clothing details getting a more real manifestation. 展开更多

It is well known that no criterion about seismic design for risers is available, and relevant research has not been reported. A comprehensive study of riser dynamics during earthquakes is performed in this paper. A dynamic model for seismic analysis of risers is developed in accordance with the working environment of the risers and the influence of inertia force of the pipelines. The dynamic equations for the developed model are derived and resolved on the basis of the energy theory of beams. Numerical simulation for an engineering project in the Bohai Oil Field, China shows that the fundamental frequency of the riser plays the major role in the seismic responses, and for platforms in shallow water in Bohai Bay, the risers demonstrate a much lower stress response due to prominent differences between the riser frequency and the earthquake wave frequency. The presented model and its corresponding method for seismic analysis are practical and important for riser design resistant to earthquake waves. 展开更多

Optimisation of effective design parameters to reduce tooth bending stress for an automotive transmission gearbox is presented. A systematic investigation of effective design parameters for optimum design of a five-speed gearbox is studied. For this aim contact ratio effect on tooth bending stress by the changing of contact ratio with respect to pressure angle is analysed. Additionally, profile modification effects on tooth bending stress are presented. During the optimisation, the tooth bending stress is considered as the objective function, and all the geometric design parameters such as module, teeth number etc. are optimised under two different constraints, including tooth contact stress and constant gear centre distance. It can be concluded that higher the contact ratio results in a reduced tooth bending stress, while higher the pressure angle caused an increase in tooth bending stress and contact stress, since decreases in the contact ratio. In addition, application of positive profile modification on tooth reduces tooth bending stress. All of the obtained optimum solutions satisfy all constraints. 展开更多

In the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor(ITER) project,the feeders are one of the most important and critical systems.To convey the power supply and the coolant for the central solenoid(CS) magnet,6 sets of CS feeders are employed,which consist mainly of an in-cryostat feeder(ICF),a cryostat feed-through(CFT),an S-bend box(SBB),and a coil terminal box(CTB).To compensate the displacements of the internal components of the CS feeders during operation,sliding cold mass supports consisting of a sled plate,a cylindrical support,a thermal shield,and an external ring are developed.To check the strength of the developed cold mass supports of the CS3U feeder,electromagnetic analysis of the two superconducting busbars is performed by using the CATIA V5 and ANSYS codes based on parametric technology.Furthermore, the thermal-structural coupling analysis is performed based on the obtained results,except for the stress concentration,and the max.stress intensity is lower than the allowable stress of the selected material.It is found that the conceptual design of the cold mass support can satisfy the required functions under the worst case of normal working conditions.All these performed activities will provide a firm technical basis for the engineering design and development of cold mass supports. 展开更多

Automobiles are the inevitable mode of transportation.However,increasing fuel prices and carbon dioxide emissions are posing a serious threat to automobile users and the environment.Thus,the development of new lightweight materials has been a key area of research.Magnesium-based commercial alloys(AZ and ZK series alloys)are the lightest among all structural metals.However,there is still a question about the replacement of Aluminum-based alloys due to HCP crystal structure.In this connection,Mg-Al-Ca-Mn(AXM)Mg alloy can be a choice as an alternative to the existing Mg-based commercial alloys for structural applications.It contains(Al,Mg)_(2)Ca,Al_(2)Ca,Mg_(2)Ca,and Al_(8)Mn_(5)as the secondary phases,contributing to the microstructural refinement and property enhancement.However,the formation of those precipitates depends on the amount of Al,Ca,and Mn,especially,the Ca/Al ratio.In addition,the secondary processes influence the grain refinement and property enhancement of texture modifications.Hence,this review article focuses on elaborating on the significance of the Ca/Al ratio for the precipitate formation,secondary process,and texture modifications.The co-segregation behavior of other micro-alloying elements like Cerium,Lanthanum,and Zinc in AXM Mg alloy systems has also been discussed for property enhancement. 展开更多

Aluminum(Al)-ion batteries have emerged as a potential alternative to conventional ion batteries that rely on less abundant and costly materials like lithium.Nonetheless,given the nascent stage of advancement in Al-ion batteries(AIBs),attaining electrode materials that can leverage both intercalation capacity and structural stability remains challenging.Herein,we demonstrate a C3N4-derived layered N,S heteroatom-doped carbon,obtained at different pyrolysis temperatures,as a cathode material for AIBs,encompassing the diffusion-controlled intercalation and surface-induced capacity with ultrahigh reversibility.The developed layered N,S-doped corbon(N,S-C)cathode,synthesized at 900℃,delivers a specific capacity of 330 mAhg^(-1)with a relatively high coulombic efficiency of~85%after 500 cycles under a current density of 0.5 A g^(-1).Owing to its reinforced adsorption capability and enlarged interlayer spacing by doping N and S heteroatoms,the N,S-C900 cathode demonstrates outstanding energy storage capacity with excellent rate performance(61 mAhg^(-1)at 20 A g^(-1))and ultrahigh reversibility(90 mAhg^(-1)at 5Ag^(-1)after 10000cycles). 展开更多

Hydrogen dissolved in metals as a result of internal and external hydrogen can affect the mechanical properties of the metals, principally through the interactions between hydrogen and material defects. Multiple phenomena such as hydrogen dissolution, hydrogen diffusion, hydrogen redistribution and hydrogen interactions with vacancies, dislocations, grain boundaries and other phase interfaces are involved in this process. Consequently, several hydrogen embrittlement(HE) mechanisms have been successively proposed to explain the HE phenomena, with the hydrogen-enhanced decohesion mechanism, hydrogenenhanced localized plasticity mechanism and hydrogen-enhanced strain-induced vacancies being some of the most important. Additionally, to reduce the risk of HE for engineering structural materials in service, surface treatments and microstructural optimization of the alloys have been suggested. In this review, we report on the progress of the studies on HE in metals, with a particular focus on steels. It focuses on four aspects:(1) hydrogen diffusion behavior;(2) hydrogen characterization methods;(3) HE mechanisms;and(4) the prevention of HE. The strengths and weaknesses of the current HE mechanisms and HE prevention methods are discussed, and specific research directions for further investigation of fundamental HE mechanisms and methods for preventing HE failure are identified. 展开更多

Along with the consumption increase of the petroleum products, more countries have transferred their attentions to the offshore fields, especially the deepwater oil and gas reserves. For deepwater exploitation, the risers must be installed to act as the conduits connecting surface platforms to subsea facilities. In this paper, the typical risers sorted by different classes are introduced, and the correspondent installation methods are presented. By investigating the recent projects performed in the deepwater hot spots, and combining the challenges of HYSY20 l for riser installation, a lifting device developed for assisting riser installation is proposed and detailed to satisfy the installation of deepwater risers in the LW3-1 Gas Field of 1500 m in the South China Sea. Tests on both the functions and performances of such a new system exhibit the satisfaction of meeting all challenging requirements of HYSY201 for application to riser installation in waters up to a depth of 3000 m in the South China Sea. 展开更多

Hydrogen embrittlement of Inconel 718 alloy was investigated. Multi-scale observation technique were employed, comprising slow strain rate tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The results demonstrate that hydrogen charging deteriorates mechanical properties of the alloy. Inconel 718 alloy shows partial Portevin-Le Chatelier(PLC) effect at room temperature when hydrogen charging current density is 220 mA cm^(-2) and 590 mA cm^(-2). Moreover, plastic deformation features with dislocation cells are detected in hydrogen-induced brittle zone. Thus, it is concluded that dragging effect of hydrogen atoms on dislocations contributes to PLC effect. 展开更多

In accordance with the minimum degree of disregistry mechanism in oxide metallurgy, the intragranular acicular ferrite (IAF) generated by microalloying elements in austenite was studied. Herein, the effect of Mg treatment on the microstructure and toughness of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in shipbuilding steel was investigated. Mg treatment produced inclusions that influenced the formation of acicular ferrite in the microstructure. This refined the HAZ microstructure and improved its toughness. Electron backscatter diffraction was used to determine the oxides of titanium and the MgO Al_(2)O_(3) or MgAl_(2)O_(4) complex inclusions that induced the formation of IAF. MnS precipitated on MgAl_(2)O_(4) on a specific habit plane and in a specific direction. MnS had a specific orientation relationship with MgAl_(2)O_(4), i.e., f100gMgAl_(2)O_(4) //{100}MnS. The 35-mm-thick plate obtained in the industrial test after welding at a welding heat input of 120 kJ/cm had an average impact absorbed energy of 282.7 J at - 40 ℃ and 2 mm from the weld joint in the HAZ. The twodimensional disregistry index between inclusions can be used as the basis for controlling their distribution and adsorption force. Microalloy addition in the order of Al-Mg-Ti is key to obtaining abundant dispersion and fine nucleation in austenite. 展开更多

Discrete choice model acts as one of the most important tools for studies involving mode split in the context of transport demand forecast. As different types of discrete choice models display their merits and restrictions diversely, how to properly select the specific type among discrete choice models for realistic application still remains to be a tough problem. In this article, five typical discrete choice models for transport mode split are, respectively, discussed, which includes multinomial logit model, nested logit model (NL), heteroscedastic extreme value model, multinominal probit model and mixed multinomial logit model (MMNL). The theoretical basis and application attributes of these five models are especially analysed with great attention, and they are also applied to a realistic intercity case of mode split forecast, which results indi- cating that NL model does well in accommodating similarity and heterogeneity across alternatives, while MMNL model serves as the most effective method for mode choice prediction since it shows the highest reliability with the least significant prediction errors and even outperforms the other four models in solving the heterogeneity and similarity problems. This study indicates that conclusions derived from a single discrete choice model are not reliable, and it is better to choose the proper model based on its characteristics. 展开更多

Collaborative Simulation and Testing of the Superconducting Dipole Prototype Magnet for the FAIR Project

The superconducting dipole prototype magnet of the collector ring for the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an international cooperation project. The collaborative simulation and testing of the developed prototype magnet is presented in this paper. To evaluate the mechanical strength of the coil case during quench, a 3-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic (EM) model was developed based on the solid97 magnetic vector element in the ANSYS commercial software, which includes the air region, coil and yoke. EM analysis was carried out with a peak operating current at 278 A. Then, the solid97 element was transferred into the solid185 element, the coupled analysis was switched from electromagnetic to structural, and the finite element model for the coil case and glass-fiber reinforced composite (G10) spacers was established by the ANSYS Parametric Design Language based on the 3D model from the CATIA V5 software. However, to simulate the friction characteristics inside the coil case, the conta173 surface-to-surface contact element was established. The results for the coil case and G10 spacers show that they are safe and have sufficient strength, on the basis of testing in discharge and quench scenarios. 展开更多

The air cushion vehicle (ACV) sea keeping characteristic under different wave directions with the operation resistance is discussed with the couples of the heave, pitch roll motion and the pressure of the cushion. In previous researches, only wave and cross wave direction were discussed. Then a Matlab program is made to calculate the united frequency responses of heave, pitch and roll amplitude of the craft, under different wave frequencies and different wave directions. The results of the research depict some dangerous situations under which the sympathetic vibration happens in heave, pitch and roll motion and the amplitudes are extremely higher than those under the ordinary conditions. These results will be helpful in ACV design and operation. 展开更多

Helix Angle Effect on the Helical Gear Load Carrying Capacity

The aim of this study is to investigate the helix angle effect on the helical gear load carrying capacity, including the bending and contact load carrying capacity. During the simulation, the transverse contact ratio is calculated with respect to the constant pressure angle. By changing the helix angle, both the overlap contact ratio and total contact ratio are calculated and simulated. The bending stress and contact stress of a helical gear are calculated and simulated with respect to the helix angle. Solid (CAD) modelling of a pinion gear was obtained using SOLIDWORKS software. The analytically obtained results and finite elements method results are compared. It is observed that increasing the helix angle causes an increase of the contact ratio of the helical gear. Furthermore, increasing the contact ratio reduces the bending stress and contact stress of the helical gear. However, with a constant transverse contact ratio, it is possible to improve the total contact ratio depending on the helix angle. It is concluded that a higher helix angle increases the helical gear bending and contact load carrying capacity. 展开更多

State departments of transportation’s (DOTs) decisions to invest resources to expand or implement intelligent transportation systems (ITS) programs or even retire existing infrastructure need to be based on performance evaluations. Nonetheless, an apparent gap exists between the need for ITS performance measurements and the actual implementation. The evidence available points to challenges in the ITS performance measurement processes. This paper evaluated the state of practice of performance measurement for ITS across the US and provided insights. A comprehensive literature review assessed the use of performance measures by DOTs for monitoring implemented ITS programs. Based on the gaps identified through the literature review, a nationwide qualitative survey was used to gather insights from key stakeholders on the subject matter and presented in this paper. From the data gathered, performance measurement of ITS is fairly integrated into ITS programs by DOTs, with most agencies considering the process beneficial. There, however, exist reasons that prevent agencies from measuring ITS performance to greater detail and quality. These include lack of data, fragmented or incomparable data formats, the complexity of the endeavor, lack of data scientists, and difficulty assigning responsibilities when inter-agency collaboration is required. Additionally, DOTs do not benchmark or compare their ITS performance with others for reasons that include lack of data, lack of guidance or best practices, and incomparable data formats. This paper is relevant as it provides insights expected to guide DOTs and other agencies in developing or reevaluating their ITS performance measurement processes. 展开更多
