The momentum ...The three-axis active attitude control method with a momentum wheel and magnetic coils for a pico-satellite is considered. The designed satellite is a 2.5 kg class satellite stabilized to nadir pointing. The momentum wheel performs a pitch-axis momentum bias, nominally spinning at a particular rate. Three magnetic coils are mounted perpendicularly along the body axis for precise attitude control through the switch control mechanism. Momentum wheel start up control, damping control and attitude acquisition control are considered. Simulation results show that the proposed combined control laws for the pico-satellite is reliable and has an appropriate accuracy under different separation conditions. The proposed strategy to start up the wheel after separation from the launch vehicle shows that its pitch momentum wheel can start up successfully to its nominal speed from rest, and the attitude convergence can be completed within several orbits, depending on separation conditions.展开更多

The oscillator noise is very difficult to filter due to its extremely low fr...The most dominant error source for microwave ranging is the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. The oscillator noise is very difficult to filter due to its extremely low frequency. A dual transponder carrier ranging method can effectively minimize the oscillator noise by combing the reference phase and the to-and-fro measurement phase from the same single oscillator. This method does not require an accurate time tagging system, since it extracts phases on the same satellite. This paper analyzes the dual transponder carrier ranging system by simulation of the phase measurements with comprehensive error models. Both frequency domain and time domain noise transfer characteristics were simulated to compare them with dual one-way ranging. The simulation results in the two domains conformed to each other and demonstrated that a high level of accuracy can also be achieved by use of the dual transponder carder ranging system, with relatively simple instruments.展开更多
Face-to-face communication is very important skill to share intentions. However, many people in the modem world feel that they are deficient in face-to-face communication. So, we feel that it is necessary to support t...Face-to-face communication is very important skill to share intentions. However, many people in the modem world feel that they are deficient in face-to-face communication. So, we feel that it is necessary to support their face-to-face communication using information technologies. We have developed a topic-providing system that can infer behaviors from daily life and provides users with information about their conversation partner, including that on his hometown, hobbies and life logs when face-to-face communication is initiated. The life logs are details about a user's life, and are generated using a Bayesian network on the basis of sensor data provided by our system. This system enables users to access other users' information of behaviors from the accumulated life logs and it utilizes this infbrmation to generate topics for conversation. We evaluated the accuracy with which proposal system inferred behaviors to confirm whether exact life log generation is possible. And we also evaluated the proposed system by administering a questionnaire to confirm whether the proposed system can support face-to-face communication.展开更多

Because of compression-efficient techniques of variable block size (VBS) and sub-pixel interpolation, intensive pixel calculation and huge memory access are required. We propose a parallel serial filtering mixed luma interpolation data flow and a three-stage multiplication free chroma interpolation scheme. Compared to the conventional designs, the integrated architecture supports about 2.7 times filtering throughput. The proposed MC design utilizes Vertical Z processing order for reference data re-use and saves up to 30% memory bandwidth. The whole design requires 44.3k gates when synthesized at 108 MHz clock frequency using 0.18-μm CMOS technology and can support up to 1920×1088@30 fps AVS HDTV video decoding.展开更多

In mobile robotics research, we extend FastSLAM 2.0 like stereo vision SLAM with "pure vision" domain to outdoor environments. Unlike popular stochastic motion model used in conventional monocular vision SLAM, we utilize the ideas of structure from motion (SFM) for initial motion estimation, which is more suitable for the robot moving in large-scale outdoor, and textured environments. SIFT features are used as natural landmarks, and its 3D positions are constructed directly through triangulation. Considering the computational complexity and memory consumption, Bkd-tree and Best-Bin-First (BBF) search strategy are utilized for SIFT feature descriptor matching. Results show high accuracy of our algorithm, even in the circumstance of large translation and large rotation movements.展开更多

T...The rectangular optical filter is one of the most important optical switching components in the dense wavelength divi- sion multiplexing (DWDM) fiber-optic communication system and the intelligent optical network. The integrated high- order silicon microring resonator (MRR) is one of the best candidates to achieve rectangular filtering spectrum re- sponse. In general, the spectrum response rectangular degree of the single MRR is very low, so it cannot be used in the DWDM system. Using the high-order MRRs, the bandwidth of flat-top pass band, the out-of-band rejection degree and the roll-off coefficient of the edge will be improved obviously. In this paper, a rectangular optical filter based on high- order MRRs with uniform couplers is presented and demonstrated. Using 15 coupled race-track MRRs with 10 pm in radius, the 3 dB flat-top pass band of 2 nm, the out-of-band rejection ratio of 30 dB and the rising and falling edges of 48 dB/nm can be realized successfully.展开更多

In the proposed scheme, each cooper...We propose a reputation-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme in cognitive radio (CR) networks to solve the uncertainty resulting from the multipath fading and shadowing effect. In the proposed scheme, each cooperative CR user has a reputation degree that is initialized and adjusted by the central controller, and used to weight the sensing result from the corresponding CR user in the linear fusion process at the central controller. A simple method for adjusting the reputation degree of CR users is also presented. We analyzed and evaluated the detection performance of the reputation-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme. Simulation results showed that our proposed scheme alleviates the problem of corrupted detection resulting from destructive channel conditions between the primary transmitter and the CR user. The performance of our proposed scheme was improved compared to the average-based linear cooperation scheme, and was similar to that of the optimal linear cooperation scheme with feasible computational complexity. Moreover, our proposed scheme does not require knowledge of channel statistics.展开更多

Simulation results show that a mismatch between the two initial sensing capacitors of the accelerometer or a mismatch between the two capacitance-voltage conversion circuits has a great effect on the output noise floor. When there is a serious mismatch, the noise induced by a sinusoidal carrier is the major noise source. When there is no or only a slight mismatch, the differential capacitance-voltage conversion circuits become the main noise source. The simulation results were validated by experiments and some effective approaches are proposed to improve the system resolution.展开更多

Physical distance is no more a barrier in online social networks, but cultural differences (at the individual, community, as well as societal levels) still govern human-human interactions and must be con- sidered and leveraged in the online world. The rapid deployment of high-speed lnternet allows humans to interact using a rich set of multimedia data such as texts, pictures, and videos. This position paper proposes to define a new research area called 'connected multimedia', which is the study of a collection of research issues of the super-area social media that receive little attention in the literature. By connected multimedia, we mean the study of the social and technical interactions among users, multimedia data, and devices across cultures and explicitly exploiting the cultural differences. We justify why it is necessary to bring attention to this new research area and what benefits of this new research area may bring to the broader scientific research community and the humanity.展开更多
