A Comparative Review of the Experimental Mitigation Methods of the S-Shaped Diffusers in the Aeroengine Intakes

Gas Turbines are among the most important energy systems for aviation and thermal-based power generation.The performance of gas turbine intakes with S-shaped diffusers is vulnerable to flow separation,reversal flow,and pressure distortion,mainly in aggressive S-shaped diffusers.Severalmethods,including vortex generators and energy promoters,have been proposed and investigated both experimentally and numerically.This paper compiles a review of experimental investigations that have been performed and reported to mitigate flow separation and restore system performance.The operational principles,classifications,design geometries,and performance parameters of Sshaped diffusers are presented to facilitate the analysis and understanding of the influence of each mitigation method on flowenhancement in S-shaped diffusers.Theinfluencing design parameters on the performance of the S-shaped diffuser and the findings achieved by various experimental investigations are discussed and compared.The review concludes that reducing the intake length reduces the size and weight of the gas turbine,leading to a higher power-to-weight ratio.However,the main challenge in shortening the S-shaped diffusers is the flow separation in the high-curvature section,which must be prevented to maintain high performance.Prevention can be achieved through flow control methods,which are categorized into passive and aggressive methods.The static pressure recovery coefficient,total pressure loss coefficient,ideal static pressure coefficient,distortion coefficient,and skin friction coefficient are the primary performance evaluation and comparison parameters between the experimentally investigated mitigation methods.The new trend in S-shaped diffuser studies includes the integration of computational and data-driven methods. 展开更多

Effect of Thermoelectric Cooler Arrangements on Thermal Performance and Energy Saving in Electronic Applications:An Experimental Study

Electrical and electronic devices face significant challenges in heatmanagement due to their compact size and high heat flux,which negatively impact performance and reliability.Conventional coolingmethods,such as forced air cooling,often struggle to transfer heat efficiently.In contrast,thermoelectric coolers(TECs)provide an innovative active cooling solution to meet growing thermal management demands.In this research,a refrigerant based on mono ethylene glycol and distilled water was used instead of using gases,in addition to using thermoelectric cooling units instead of using a compressor in traditional refrigeration systems.This study evaluates the performance of a Peltierbased thermalmanagement systemby analyzing the effects of using two,three,and four Peltiermodules on cooling rates,power consumption,temperature reduction,and system efficiency.Experimental results indicate that increasing the number of Peltier modules significantly enhances cooling performance.The four-module system achieved an optimal balance between cooling speed and energy efficiency,reducing the temperature of a liquidmixture(30% mono ethylene glycol+70% distilled water plus laser dyes)to 8℃ in just 17 min.It demonstrated a cooling rate of 0.794℃/min and a high coefficient of performance(COP)of 1.2 while consuming less energy than the two-and three-module systems.Furthermore,the study revealed that increasing the number of modules led to faster air cooling and improved temperature reduction.These findings highlight the importance of selecting the optimal number of Peltier modules to enhance efficiency and cooling speed whileminimizing energy consumption.This makes TEC technology a sustainable and effective solution for applications requiring rapid and reliable thermal management. 展开更多

Achieving broadband solar thermal absorption via dilute nanofluids is still a daunting challenge since the absorption peaks of common metal particles are usually located in the visible part of the radiation spectrum.This paper aims to present the results of experimental investigations on the thermal performance of heat pipe-type evacuated solar collectors.The experimented system consists of 15 tubes,providing the hot nanofluid to 100-L storage in a closed flow loop.The solar collector with a gross area of 2.1 m^(2)is part of the solar hot water test system located in Baghdad-Iraq.Al2O3 nanofluid at 0.5%volume concentration in water as working fluid was used in three flow rates of 3.3,6.6,and 10 L/min over two months,March and April.The experimental results indicated that maximum solar irradiation was 1070 and 1270 W/m^(2)in March and April,respectively.The maximum daily average of rate heat gain 11,270 and 12,040 W was recorded in March and April,respectively.In terms of the best operational flow rate,the system performs better at 3.3 L/min nanofluid flow rate.For the considered study period,the average monthly maximum energy efficiencies of the solar collector in March and April were 86%and 80%,respectively. 展开更多

The existing research on the path following of the autonomous electric vehicle(AEV)mainly focuses on the path planning and the kinematic control.However,the dynamic control with the state observation and the communication delay is usually ignored,so the path following performance of the AEV cannot be ensured.This article studies the observer-based path following control strategy for the AEV with the communication delay via a robust explicit model predictive control approach.Firstly,a projected interval unscented Kalman filter is proposed to observe the vehicle sideslip angle and yaw rate.The observer considers the state constraints during the observation process,and the robustness of the observer is also considered.Secondly,an explicit model predictive control is designed to reduce the computational complexity.Thirdly,considering the efficiency of the information transmission,the influence of the communication delay is considered when designing the observer-based path following control strategy.Finally,the numerical simulation and the hardware-in-the-loop test are conducted to examine the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed strategy. 展开更多

The implementation of Countermeasure Techniques(CTs)in the context of Network-On-Chip(NoC)based Multiprocessor System-On-Chip(MPSoC)routers against the Flooding Denial-of-Service Attack(F-DoSA)falls under Multi-Criteria Decision-Making(MCDM)due to the three main concerns,called:traffic variations,multiple evaluation criteria-based traffic features,and prioritization NoC routers as an alternative.In this study,we propose a comprehensive evaluation of various NoC traffic features to identify the most efficient routers under the F-DoSA scenarios.Consequently,an MCDM approach is essential to address these emerging challenges.While the recent MCDM approach has some issues,such as uncertainty,this study utilizes Fuzzy-Weighted Zero-Inconsistency(FWZIC)to estimate the criteria weight values and Fuzzy Decision by Opinion Score Method(FDOSM)for ranking the routers with fuzzy Single-valued Neutrosophic under names(SvN-FWZIC and SvN-FDOSM)to overcome the ambiguity.The results obtained by using the SvN-FWZIC method indicate that the Max packet count has the highest importance among the evaluated criteria,with a weighted score of 0.1946.In contrast,the Hop count is identified as the least significant criterion,with a weighted score of 0.1090.The remaining criteria fall within a range of intermediate importance,with enqueue time scoring 0.1845,packet count decremented and traversal index scoring 0.1262,packet count incremented scoring 0.1124,and packet count index scoring 0.1472.In terms of ranking,SvN-FDOSM has two approaches:individual and group.Both the individual and group ranking processes show that(Router 4)is the most effective router,while(Router 3)is the lowest router under F-DoSA.The sensitivity analysis provides a high stability in ranking among all 10 scenarios.This approach offers essential feedback in making proper decisions in the design of countermeasure techniques in the domain of NoC-based MPSoC. 展开更多

The stimulator of interferon genes(STING),as a critical innate immune sensor,has been widely and continually explored in immune-related disease treatment.As lipid bilayer-closed particles derived from cells,extracellular vesicles(EVs)inherently function in target-guided intercellular communication.To incorporate the native merits of EVs into STING pathways,i.e.,engineered EV@STING,poor bioavailability and off-target issues that STING activators possess could be significantly overcome.In this review,emerged STING activators such as nitrogen-containing heterocyclic structures and the universal STING activation strategy(uniSTING)are firstly summarized.Diverse EVs sources from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)and innate and adaptive immune cells may evoke distinct regulatory results.Concurrently,how the EVs contents including double-stranded DNA(dsDNA),microRNA(miRNA),cyclic GMP-AMP synthase(cGAS)and 2′3′-cyclic GMP-AMP(2′3′-cGAMP)proteins participate in the regulation of STING activation are widely studied.After mastering the two pivotal aspects of EV@STING,their immunomodulatory roles including in pathogen infection,inflammatory diseases,and cancer therapy are comprehensively summed up and discussed.Finally,in cancer study field,therapeutic challenges and clinical translational opportunities of EV@STING are thoroughly evaluated. 展开更多

Due to the bus characteristics of large quality,high center of gravity and narrow wheelbase,the research of its yaw stability control(YSC)system has become the focus in the field of vehicle system dynamics.However,the tire nonlinear mechanical properties and the effectiveness of the YSC control system are not considered carefully in the current research.In this paper,a novel adaptive nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode(ANFTSM)control scheme for YSC is proposed to improve the bus curve driving stability and safety on slippery roads.Firstly,the STI(Systems Technologies Inc.)tire model,which can effectively reflect the nonlinear coupling relationship between the tire longitudinal force and lateral force,is established based on experimental data and firstly adopted in the bus YSC system design.On this basis,a more accurate bus lateral dynamics model is built and a novel YSC strategy based on ANFTSM,which has the merits of fast transient response,finite time convergence and high robustness against uncertainties and external disturbances,is designed.Thirdly,to solve the optimal allocation problem of the tire forces,whose objective is to achieve the desired direct yaw moment through the effective distribution of the brake force of each tire,the robust least-squares allocation method is adopted.To verify the feasibility,effectiveness and practicality of the proposed bus YSC approach,the TruckSim-Simulink co-simulation results are finally provided.The co-simulation results show that the lateral stability of bus under special driving conditions has been significantly improved.This research proposes a more effective design method for bus YSC system based on a more accurate tire model. 展开更多

Heat exchangers are widely used in the process engineering such as the chemical industries, the petroleum industries, and the HVAC applications etc. An optimally designed heat exchanger cannot only help the optimization of the equipment size but also the reduction of the power consumption. In this paper, a new optimization approach called algorithms of changes (AOC) is proposed for design and optimization of the shell-tube heat exchanger. This new optimization technique is developed based on the concept of the book of changes (I Ching) which is one of the oldest Chinese classic texts. In AOC, the hexagram operations in I Ching are generalized to binary string case and an iterative process, which imitates the I Ching inference, is defined. Before applying the AOC to the heat exchanger design problem, the new optimization method is examined by the benchmark optimization problems such as the global optimization test functions and the travelling salesman problem (TSP). Based on the TSP results, the AOC is shown to be superior to the genetic algorithms (GA). The AOC is then used in the optimal design of heat exchanger. The shell inside diameter, tube outside diameter, and baffles spacing are treated as the design (or optimized) variables. The cost of the heat exchanger is arranged as the objective function. For the heat exchanger design problem, the results show that the AOC is comparable to the GA method. Both methods can find the optimal solution in a short period of time. 展开更多

The effects of the post-deformation annealing on the microstructural evolution of hot rolled Al7075 matrix composites reinforced with CNTs and GNPs were investigated.The multi-pass hot rolling was applied on the stir cast samples.Annealing was then applied to the composites at 450℃ for 4 h.Microstructural evolution was examined by SEM,EDS,and EBSD techniques.EBSD data showed that the addition of 0.87 vol.%(GNPs+CNTs)significantly inhibited the occurrence of recrystallization.Also,in the composite with 0.96 vol.%CNTs,recrystallization was partially inhibited.Whereas,in composites with 0.92 vol.%of GNPs,the occurrence of recrystallization through particle stimulated nucleation(PSN)mechanism was significantly accelerated.The volume fraction of recrystallized grains depends significantly on the occurrence of PSN in the presence of reinforcements.The intensity and type of the main components of the texture as well as the FCC fibers depend on the type of reinforcement. 展开更多

As a preliminary step in the nonlinear design of shape memory alloy(SMA) composite structures,the force-displacement characteristics of the SMA layer are studied.The bilinear hysteretic model is adopted to describe the constitutive relationship of SMA material.Under the assumption that there is no point of SMA layer finishing martensitic phase transformation during the loading and unloading process,the generalized restoring force generated by SMA layer is deduced for the case that the simply supported beam vibrates in its first mode.The generalized force is expressed as piecewise-nonlinear hysteretic function of the beam transverse displacement.Furthermore the energy dissipated by SMA layer during one period is obtained by integration,then its dependencies are discussed on the vibration amplitude and the SMA's strain(Ms-Strain) value at the beginning of martensitic phase transformation.It is shown that SMA's energy dissipating capacity is proportional to the stiffness difference of bilinear model and nonlinearly dependent on Ms-Strain.The increasing rate of the dissipating capacity gradually reduces with the amplitude increasing.The condition corresponding to the maximum dissipating capacity is deduced for given value of the vibration amplitude.The obtained results are helpful for designing beams laminated with shape memory alloys. 展开更多

In order to assess the new tribological properties of laser surface hardened GCr15 steel, the wear resistance between specimens treated with laser and those of conventionally hardened under dry sliding conditions was compared. The change of wear mechanisms in laser hardened GCr15 resulted in a distinct difference in wear rates. The results showed that quenched zones not only had sufficient depth of hardening and higher hardness, but had more retained austenite and finer carbides because of a higher degree of carbide dissolution. Laser surface hardened GCr15 steel specimens exhibited superior wear resistance to their conventionally hardened specimens due to the effects of the microstructure hardening, high hardness and toughness. The wear mechanism for both the laser quenched layer and conventionally hardened layer was highly similar, generally involving adhesive, material transfer, wear-induced oxidation and plowing. When conventionally hardened block specimens rubbed against the laser hardened specimens, the surface of conventionally hardened block specimens was polished. The microstructural thermal stability was increased after laser surface treatment. 展开更多

Streptococcus mutans(S.mutans)is the most common cariogenic bacteria and causes caries by forming biofilms.A novel gradient Cu-bearing titanium alloy(TC4-5Cu/TC4)was manufactured using selective laser melting(SLM)technology for dental applications,which is anticipated to inhibit the formation of biofilm.In this study,the released concentration of copper ions in both minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC)was tested in order to assess the antibacterial property of the alloy against planktonic S.mutans,and the antibacterial and antibiofilm efficiencies of TC4-5Cu/TC4 alloy against sessile S.mutans were evaluated via quantitative antibacterial tests and biofilm determination.Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)was performed to analyze the expression of biofilm-related genes(gtfB,gtfC,gtfD,ftf and gbpB)and acid production-related gene(ldh).The results suggested that the MIC and MBC of Cu^(2+)were much higher than the release concentration of copper ions of the alloy,which was consistent with the lack of antibacterial effect against planktonic bacteria.On the contrary,TC4-5Cu/TC4 alloy exhibited significant bactericidal property against the sessile bacteria and efficient biofilm-restrained ability,and all genes detected in this research were down-regulated.The results indicated that the TC4-5Cu/TC4 alloy suppressed biofilm formation and the sessile bacterial viability by down-regulating biofilm-related genes. 展开更多

Understanding the flow characteristics of amorphous metal melts is important for casting and molding processes.Fluidity of Zr-based amorphous metal melts was determined by using a self-designed apparatus.Phase analysis demonstrated that the fluidity test samples were fuUy amorphous structure.The onset crystallization temperature significantly moved toward high temperature with the increases of casting temperature,which improved the glass-forming ability and thermal stability of Zr-based amorphous metal.Fluidity test results demonstrated that the fluidity length increased monotonically with the increases of temperature,pressure,and runner diameter.By identifying the types and quantities of the defect in castings,it could conclude that smooth filling processes occurred under appropriate conditions.Experimental results indicated that the flow behavior of the Zr-based amorphous metal melts strongly depended on the casting temperature and equivalent thickness.Constitutive equation based on Newton's law of heat exchange and Rayleigh rule was established to'evaluate the fluidity of Zr-based amorphous metal melts.Theoretical calculations and experimental tests were basically coincided with each other.The determined optimal casting temperatures and equivalent thicknesses were adopted to successfully fabricate a series of fully shaped castings through gravity casting. 展开更多

In modem four-stroke engine technology,variable valve timing and lift control offers potential benefits for making a high-performance engine.A novel electro-hydraulic fully variable valve train for four-stroke automotive engines is introduced.The construction of the nonlinear mathematic model of the valve train system and its dynamic analysis are also presented.Experimental and simulation results show that the novel electro-hydraulic valve train can achieve fully variable valve timing and lift control.Consequently the engine performance on different loads and speeds will be significantly increased.The technology also permits the elimination of the traditional throttle valve in the gasoline engines and increases engine design flexibility. 展开更多

Abstract A friction stir processing-based method was used to repair cracks in the 2024 aluminum alloy plates. The temperature field and plastic material flow pattern were analyzed on the basis of experimental and finite element simulation results. Microstructure and tensile properties of the repaired specimens were studied. The results showed that the entire crack repairing was a solid-phase process and plastic materials tended to flow toward the shoulder center and then resulted in the repairing of cracks. Meanwhile, the coarse grain structures were refined in repaired zone (RZ), while the grains in thermal-mechanically affected zone and heat-affected zone were elongated and driven to grow up. Meanwhile, large phases are crushed into small particles and dispersed inside the RZ. Finally, the strength of the repaired specimens can be restored dramatically and their ductility can be partially restored. After heat treatment, the tensile properties of the repaired specimens can be further enhanced. 展开更多

Multi-objective dimensional optimization of parallel kinematic manipulators(PKMs) remains a challenging and worthwhile research endeavor. This paper presents a straightforward and systematic methodology for implementing the structure optimization analysis of a 3-prismatic-universal-universal(PUU) PKM when simultaneously considering motion transmission, velocity transmission and acceleration transmission. Firstly, inspired by a planar four-bar linkage mechanism, the motion transmission index of the spatial parallel manipulator is based on transmission angle which is defined as the pressure angle amongst limbs. Then, the velocity transmission index and acceleration transmission index are derived through the corresponding kinematics model. The multi-objective dimensional optimization under specific constraints is carried out by the improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGA Ⅱ), resulting in a set of Pareto optimal solutions. The final chosen solution shows that the manipulator with the optimized structure parameters can provide excellent motion, velocity and acceleration transmission properties. 展开更多

Silicon nitride(Si_(3)N_(4))based ceramics are one of the most attractive advanced engineering materials,which have been widely used under high-speed rotational operation or for mechanical contacts across a curved surface.In the present study,rotationally symmetric texturing of Si_(3)N_(4),with radial grain align-ment,was obtained by centripetal sinter-forging(CSF)of a partially sintered sample.The average values of the included angles between the c-axis of the local Si_(3)N_(4)grain and radial direction were approxi-mately 16.4°and 11.0°,on the section plane perpendicular to the pressing direction,and parallel to both the pressing and radial directions,respectively.The compressive strain in the pressing direction forced the ceramic body to flow towards the central axis,resulting in compressive strain in the tangential di-rection and tensile strain in the radial direction.A fundamental physical model was created to simulate the grain rotation during the 3-dimentional strain reorientation,which revealed the rod-like grain would preferentially rotate toward the center of the sample under the CSF process.In addition,due to the fric-tion between the sample surface and the pressing punch,the increased shear strain could enhance the Si_(3)N_(4)grain alignment.Consequently,ceramics with rod-like grains perpendicular to the curved side sur-face could be anticipated by applying the centripetal forming concept in a controlled manner. 展开更多

Modern automotive petrol engine performance is significantly affected by effective tune-up. Current practice of engine tune-up relies on the experience of the automotive engineer, and tune-up is usually done by trial-and-error method and then the vehicle engine is run on the dynamometer to show the actual engine performance. Obviously the current practice involves a large amount of time and money, and then may even fail to tune up the engine optimally because a formal performance model of the engine has not been determined yet. With an emerging technique, Support Vector Machines (SVM), the approximate per- formance model of a petrol vehicle engine can be determined by training the sample engine performance data acquired from the dynamometer. The number of dynamometer tests for an engine tune-up can therefore be reduced because the estimated engine performance model can replace the dynamometer tests to a certain extent. In this paper, the construction, validation and accuracy of the model are discussed. The study showed that the predicted results agree well with the actual test results. To illustrate the significance of the SVM methodology, the results were also compared with that regressed using multilayer feedforward neural networks. 展开更多
