The solar energetic particle(SEP)event is a kind of hazardous space weather phenomena,so its quantitative forecast is of great importance from the aspect of space environmental situation awareness. We present here a set of SEP forecast tools, which consists of three components:(1)a simple polytropic solar wind model to estimate the background solar wind conditions at the inner boundary of 0.1 AU(about 20 R⊙);(2)an ice-cream-cone model to estimate the erupted coronal mass ejection(CME)parameters;and(3)the improved Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere(i PATH)model to calculate particle fluxes and energy spectra.By utilizing the above models,we have simulated six realistic SEP events from 2010 August 14 to 2014 September 10,and compared the simulated results to the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites(GOES)spacecraft observations. The results show that the simulated fluxes of>10 Me V particles agree with the observations while the simulated fluxes of>100 Me V particles are higher than the observed data. One of the possible reasons is that we have adopted a simple method in the model to calculate the injection rate of energetic particles.Furthermore,we have conducted the ensemble numerical simulations over these events and investigated the effects of different background solar wind conditions at the inner boundary on SEP events. The results imply that the initial CME density plays an important role in determining the power spectrum, while the effect of varying background solar wind temperature is not significant.Naturally,we have examined the influence of CME initial density on the numerical prediction results for virtual SEP cases with different CME ejection speeds. The result shows that the effect of initial CME density variation is inversely associated with CME speed. 展开更多

In this study, we provide the first detailed analysis of variations in the spacecraft potential (Vs) of the three Swarm satellites, which are flying at about 400-500 km. Unlike previous studies that have investigated extreme charging events, usually with spacecraft potentials as negative as −100 V, this study is focused on variations of Swarm Vs readings, which fall within a few negative volts. The Swarm observations show that spacecraft at low Earth orbital (LEO) altitudes are charged only slightly negatively, varying between −7 V and 0 V, with the majority of recorded potentials at these altitudes clustering close to −2 V. However, a second peak of Vs data is found at −5.5 V, though the event numbers for these more-negative observations are less, by an order of magnitude, than for incidents near the −2 V peak. These two distinct Vs peaks suggest two different causes. We have thus divided the Swarm spacecraft Vs data into two categories: less-negatively charged (−5 < Vs < 0 V) and more-negatively-charged (−6.5 < Vs < −5 V). These two Vs categories exhibit different spatial and temporal distributions. The Vs observations in the first category remain relatively closer to 0 V above the magnetic equator, but become much more negative at low and middle latitudes on the day side;at high latitudes, these first-category Vs readings are relatively more-negative during local summer. Second-category Vs events cluster into two bands at the middle latitudes (between ±20°-50° magnetic latitude), but with slightly more negative readings at the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) region;at high latitudes, these rarer but more-negative second-category Vs events exhibit relatively more-negative values during local winter, which is opposite to the seasonal pattern seen in the first category. By comparing Vs data to the distributions of background plasma density at Swarm altitudes, we find for the first category that more-negative Vs readings are recorded at regions with higher background plasma density, while for the second category the more-negative Vs data are observed at regions with lower background plasma density. This can be explained as follows: the electron and ion fluxes incident on Swarm surface, whose differences determine the potential of Swarm, are dominated by the background “cold” plasma (due to ionization) and “hot” plasma (due to precipitated particles from magnetosphere) for the two Vs categories, respectively. 展开更多

In large Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events, ions can be accelerated at coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shocks to very high energies. The spectra of heavy ions in many large SEP events show features such as roll-overs or spectral breaks. In some events when the spectra are plotted in terms of energy/nucleon, they can be shifted relative to each other to make the spectral breaks align. The amount of shift is charge to mass ratio (Q/A) dependent and varies from event to event. This can be understood if the spectra of heavy ions are organized by the diffusion coefficients (Cohen et al. 2005). In the work of Li et al. (2009), the Q/A dependence of the scaling is related to shock geometry when the CME-driven shock is close to the Sun. For events where multiple in-situ spacecraft observations exist, one may expect that different spacecraft are connected to different portions of the CME-driven shock that have different shock geometries, therefore yielding different Q/A dependence. In this work, we examine one SEP event which occurred on 2013 November 4. We study the Q/A dependence of the energy scaling for heavy ion spectra using helium, oxygen and iron ions. Observations from STEREO-A, STEREO-B and ACE are examined. We find that the scalings are different for different spacecraft. We suggest that this is because ACE, STEREO- A and STEREO-B are connected to different parts of the shock that have different shock geometries. Our analysis indicates that studying the Q/A scaling of in-situ particle spectra can serve as a powerful tool to remotely examine the shock geometry for large SEP events. 展开更多

The Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging(MIGHTI)onboard the Ionospheric Connection Explorer(ICON)satellite offers the opportunity to investigate the altitude profile of thermospheric winds. In this study,we used the red-line measurements of MIGHTI to compare with the results estimated by Horizontal Wind Model 14(HWM14).The data selected included both the geomagnetic quiet period(December 2019 to August 2022)and the geomagnetic storm on August 26-28,2021.During the geomagnetic quiet period, the estimations of neutral winds from HWM14 showed relatively good agreement with the observations from ICON.According to the ICON observations, near the equator, zonal winds reverse from westward to eastward at around 06:00 local time(LT)at higher altitudes, and the stronger westward winds appear at later LTs at lower altitudes. At around 16:00 LT,eastward winds at 300 km reverse to westward, and vertical gradients of zonal winds similar to those at sunrise hours can be observed. In the middle latitudes, zonal winds reverse about 2-4 h earlier.Meridional winds vary more significantly than zonal winds with seasonal and latitudinal variations.According to the ICON observations,in the northern low latitudes, vertical reversals of meridional winds are found at 08:00-13:00 LT from 300 to 160 km and at around 18:00 LT from 300 to 200 km during the June solstice.Similar reversals of meridional winds are found at 04:00-07:00 LT from 300 to 160 km and at 22:00-02:00 LT from 270 to 200 km during the December solstice. In the southern low latitudes, meridional wind reversals occur at 08:00-11:00 LT from 200 to 160 km and at 21:00-02:00 LT from 300 to 200 km during the June solstice.During the December solstice, reversals of the meridional wind appear at 20:00-01:00 LT below 200 km and at 06:00-11:00 LT from 300 to 160 km.In the northern middle latitudes, the northward winds are dominant at 08:00-14:00 LT at 230 km during the June solstice.Northward winds persist until 16:00 LT at 160 and 300 km.During the December solstice, the northward winds are dominant from 06:00 to 21:00 LT.The vertical variations in neutral winds during the geomagnetic storm on August 26-28 were analyzed in detail. Both meridional and zonal winds during the active geomagnetic period observed by ICON show distinguishable vertical shear structures at different stages of the storm. On the dayside, during the main phase, the peak velocities of westward winds extend from a higher altitude to a lower altitude, whereas during the recovery phase, the peak velocities of the westward winds extend from lower altitudes to higher altitudes. The velocities of the southward winds are stronger at lower altitudes during the storm. These vertical structures of horizontal winds during the storm could not be reproduced by the HWM14 wind estimations, and the overall response to the storm of the horizontal winds in the low and middle latitudes is underestimated by HWM14.The ICON observations provide a good dataset for improving the HWM wind estimations in the middle and upper atmosphere, especially the vertical variations. 展开更多

The Macao Science Satellite-1(known as MSS-1)is the first scientific exploration satellite that was designed to measure the Earth's low latitude magnetic field at high resolution and with high precision by collecting data in a near-equatorial orbit.Magnetic field data from MSS-1's onboard Vector Fluxgate Magnetometer(VFM),collected at a sample rate of 50 Hz,allows us to detect and investigate sources of magnetic data contamination, from DC to relevant Nyquist frequency. Here we report two types of artificial disturbances in the VFM data. One is V-shaped events concentrated at night, with frequencies sweeping from the Nyquist frequency down to zero and back up.The other is 5-Hz events(ones that exhibit a distinct 5 Hz spectrum peak);these events are always accompanied by intervals of spiky signals, and are clearly related to the attitude control of the satellite. Our analyses show that VFM noise levels in daytime are systematically lower than in nighttime. The daily average noise levels exhibit a period of about 52 days. The V-shaped events are strongly correlated with higher VFM noise levels. 展开更多

Within the context of the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation(pn-QRPA)model and TALYS v1.96 code, the radiative capture(^(99)Tc(n,γ)^(100)Tc)and stellar weak interaction(^(99)Tc→^(99)Ru+e^(−)+ν_(e))rates were computed during thermal pulses operating in asymptotic giant branch stars. The Maxwellian average cross-section(MACS)and neutron capture rates for the^(99)Tc(n,γ)^(100)Tc process are analyzed within the context of statistical code TALYS v1.96.The effect of nuclear level density(NLD)andγ-strength functions on MACS and neutron capture rates has been examined. The model-based computations for MACS provided an insightful contrast to prior investigated findings. The sensitivity of stellar weak interaction rates to different densities and temperatures is investigated using the pn-QRPA model. The impact of thermally populated excited states on electron emission(β^(−))rates in^(99)Tc is extensively examined.Additionally,a comparison is made between the study of the stellarβ^(−)decay rates and the thermal neutron capture rates. It is found that at T_(9)=0.26 the thermal neutron capture rates(λ_((n,γ)))and the temperature dependent stellarβ^(−)decay rates( λ_(β-))cross each other. However,at higher temperatures, theλ(n,γ)are found to be higher than λ_(β-). 展开更多

Theβ-decay properties of^(67-80)As nuclei have been investigated within the framework of the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation(pn-QRPA)model.The nuclear deformation obtained from the finite range droplet model is used as an input parameter in the pn-QRPA model for the analysis ofβ-decay properties including Gamow-Teller strength distributions, log ft,β-decay half-lives and stellarβ^(±)decay rates. The predicted log ft values were fairly consistent with the observed data. The computedβ-decay half-lives matched the measured values by a factor of 10.The stellar rates were compared with the shell model outcomes. At high densities and temperatures, theβ^(+)and electron capture rates had a finite contribution.However,theβ^(-)and positron capture rates are only significant at high temperatures and low densities. The pn-QRPA rates outperformed the shell model rates by a factor of 22 or more. 展开更多

In this study, we provide a detailed case study of the X-pattern of equatorial ionization anomaly(EIA) observed on the night of September 12, 2021 by the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk(GOLD) mission. Unlike most previous studies about the X-pattern observed under the severely disturbed background ionosphere, this event is observed under geomagnetically quiet and low solar activity conditions. GOLD's continuous observations reveal that the X-pattern intensity evolves with local time, while its center's longitude remains constant. The total electron content(TEC) data derived from the ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) network aligns well with GOLD observations in capturing the formation of the X-pattern, extending coverage to areas beyond GOLD's observational reach. Additionally, the ESA's Swarm mission show that both sides of the X-pattern can coincide with the occurrence of small-scale equatorial plasma bubbles(EPBs). To further analyze the possible drivers of the X-pattern, observations from the Ionospheric Connection Explorer(ICON) satellite were used. It shows that the latitudinal expansion(or width) between the EIA crests in two hemispheres is proportional(or inversely proportional) to the upward(or downward) plasma drift velocity, which suggests that the zonal electric field should have a notable influence on the formation of EIA X-pattern. Further simulations using the SAMI2 model support this mechanism, as the X-pattern of EIA is successfully reproduced by setting the vertical plasma drift to different values at different longitudes. 展开更多

The nuclear ground state properties of even-even^(106-120)Zr nuclei have been investigated within the framework of the relativistic mean field(RMF)approach. The RMF model with density-dependent DDME2 and DDPC1 interactions is utilized for the calculation of potential energy curves, the nuclear ground-state deformation parameters(β_(2)),neutron separation energies(S_(n)and S_(2n))and neutron skin thickness(rnp)of selected Zr isotopes.Later,theβ-decay properties of Zr isotopes were studied using the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation(pn-QRPA)model.These include Gamow-Teller strength distributions,β-decay half-lives and stellar electron emission/positron capture rates.Theβ2 values computed from the RMF model were employed in the pn-QRPA model as an input parameter for the calculations ofβ-decay properties for even-even 106-120Zr nuclei. The stellar rates were computed using the pn-QRPA framework with three different types of deformation parameters.Only at high temperature(T_(9)≥2)and low density(ρYe≤10^(7)g cm^(−3))values,the sum of electron emission and positron capture rates has a sizeable contribution(with positive exponents)to the stellar rates. 展开更多

We present a comprehensive analysis of BI CVn,an eclipsing overcontact binary system.New BVR photometric observations, combined with available spectroscopic data, were analyzed simultaneously using the Wilson–Devinney method to derive the orbital and physical parameters of the system. The resulting stellar parameters are M1=0.58±0.01M⊙,M2=1.42±0.02M⊙,R1=0.88±0.01R⊙,R2=1.31±0.01R⊙,with an orbital separation of a=2.80±0.01R⊙.Based on all available CCD times of minimum light, including both ground-based and T ESS observations,the(O-C)diagram of BI CVn was analyzed.T he orbital period exhibits a long-term decrease at a rate of-2.3239(±0.0001)×10-8 day yr-1,likely due to mass transfer from the more massive to the less massive component.Superimposed on this trend is a cyclic variation with a period of 56.84±0.08 yr,indicative of a light-travel time effect caused by a third body, whose estimated mass is 0.63±0.02M⊙.Using these derived parameters,we modeled the binary’s evolution through non-conservative processes with the Binary Star Evolution code. The evolutionary tracks of the components were examined in multiple parameter planes, leading to an estimated merger timescale of approximately 2.70 Gyr. 展开更多

Composite solid propellants(CSPs) have widely been used as main energy source for propelling the rockets in both space and military applications. Internal ballistic parameters of rockets like characteristic exhaust velocity, specific impulse, thrust, burning rate etc., are measured to assess and control the performance of rocket motors. The burn rate of solid propellants has been considered as most vital parameter for design of solid rocket motors to meet specific mission requirements. The burning rate of solid propellants can be tailored by using different constituents, extent of oxidizer loading and its particle size and more commonly by incorporating suitable combustion catalysts. Various metal oxides(MOs),complexes, metal powders and metal alloys have shown positive catalytic behaviour during the combustion of CSPs. These are usually solid-state catalysts that play multiple roles in combustion of CSPs such as reduction in activation energy, enhancement of rate of reaction, modification of sequences in reaction-phase, influence on condensed-phase combustion and participation in combustion process in gas-phase reactions. The application of nanoscale catalysts in CSPs has increased considerably in recent past due to their superior catalytic properties as compared to their bulk-sized counterparts. A large surface-to-volume ratio and quantum size effect of nanocatalysts are considered to be plausible reasons for improving the combustion characteristics of propellants. Several efforts have been made to produce nanoscale combustion catalysts for advanced propellant formulations to improve their energetics. The work done so far is largely scattered. In this review, an effort has been made to introduce various combustion catalysts having at least a metallic entity. Recent developments of nanoscale combustion catalysts with their specific merits are discussed. The combustion chemistry of a typical CSP is briefly discussed for providing a better understanding on role of combustion catalysts in burning rate enhancement. Available information on different types of combustion nanocatalysts is also presented with critical comments. 展开更多

When a pico satellite is under normal operational condi- tions, whether it is extended or unscented, a conventional Kalman filter gives sufficiently good estimation results. However, if the measurements are not reliable because of any kind of malfunc- tions in the estimation system, the Kalman filter gives inaccurate results and diverges by time. This study compares two different robust Kalman filtering algorithms, robust extended Kalman filter (REKF) and robust unscented Kalman filter (RUKF), for the case of measurement malfunctions. In both filters, by the use of de- fined variables named as the measurement noise scale factor, the faulty measurements are taken into the consideration with a small weight, and the estimations are corrected without affecting the characteristic of the accurate ones. The proposed robust Kalman filters are applied for the attitude estimation process of a pico satel- lite, and the results are compared. 展开更多

Radio frequency interference(RFI) is becoming more and more frequently, which makes it an important issue in SAR imaging.RFI presented in synthetic aperture radar either on purpose or inadvertent will distort the useful SAR echoes, thus degrade the SAR image quality. To resolve this issue, a long time study was carried out to study the characteristic of the RFI through the RFIaffected spaceborne and airborne SAR data.Based on the narrow band nature of RFI, this paper proposes a new process which contains both RFI detection and RFI suppression.A useful subband spectral kurtosis detector is first used to detect RFI, and then its results are used for RFI suppression. The proposed process has two advantages: one is the economization on the compute time for unnecessary interference suppression when no RFI existed; the other is improving the performance of the suppression method with knowing the exact position where RFI is.Moreover, the previous RFI suppression method––subband spectral cancelation(SSC) is supplemented and perfected. The subband division step is also elaborated detail in this paper. The experiment results show that the subband spectral kurtosis detector exhibits good performance in recognizing both weak and narrow-band RFI.In addition, the validity of the SSC method with subband spectral kurtosis detector is also validated on the real SAR echoes. 展开更多

Radiation belt electron dropouts indicate electron flux decay to the background level during geomagnetic storms, which is commonly attributed to the effects of wave-induced pitch angle scattering and magnetopause shadowing. To investigate the loss mechanisms of radiation belt electron dropouts triggered by a solar wind dynamic pressure pulse event on 12 September 2014,we comprehensively analyzed the particle and wave measurements from Van Allen Probes. The dropout event was divided into three periods:before the storm, the initial phase of the storm, and the main phase of the storm. The electron pitch angle distributions(PADs)and electron flux dropouts during the initial and main phases of this storm were investigated, and the evolution of the radial profile of electron phase space density(PSD)and the(μ,K)dependence of electron PSD dropouts(whereμ,K,and L^*are the three adiabatic invariants)were analyzed. The energy-independent decay of electrons at L>4.5 was accompanied by butterfly PADs,suggesting that the magnetopause shadowing process may be the major loss mechanism during the initial phase of the storm at L>4.5.The features of electron dropouts and 90°-peaked PADs were observed only for>1 MeV electrons at L<4,indicating that the wave-induced scattering effect may dominate the electron loss processes at the lower L-shell during the main phase of the storm.Evaluations of the(μ,K)dependence of electron PSD drops and calculations of the minimum electron resonant energies of H+-band electromagnetic ion cyclotron(EMIC)waves support the scenario that the observed PSD drop peaks around L^*=3.9 may be caused mainly by the scattering of EMIC waves, whereas the drop peaks around L^*=4.6 may result from a combination of EMIC wave scattering and outward radial diffusion. 展开更多

This paper briefly reviews ionospheric irregularities that occur in the E and F regions at mid-latitudes. Sporadic E(ES) is a common ionospheric irregularity phenomenon that is first noticed in the E layer. ES mainly appears during daytime in summer hemispheres, and is formed primarily from neutral wind shear in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere(MLT) region. Field-aligned irregularity(FAI) in the E region is also observed by Very High Frequency(VHF) radar in mid-latitude regions. FAI frequently occurs after sunset in summer hemispheres, and spectrum features of E region FAI echoes suggest that type-2 irregularity is dominant in the nighttime ionosphere. A close relationship between ES and E region FAI implies that ES may be a possible source of E region FAI in the nighttime ionosphere. Strong neutral wind shear, steep ES plasma density gradient, and a polarized electric field are the significant factors affecting the formation of E region FAI. At mid-latitudes, joint observational experiments including ionosonde, VHF radar, Global Positioning System(GPS) stations, and all-sky optical images have revealed strong connections across different scales of ionospheric irregularities in the nighttime F region, such as spread F(SF), medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances(MSTID), and F region FAI.Observations suggest that different scales of ionospheric irregularities are generally attributed to the Perkins instability and subsequently excited gradient drift instability. Nighttime MSTID can further evolve into small-scale structures through a nonlinear cascade process when a steep plasma density gradient exists at the bottom of the F region. In addition, the effect of ionospheric electrodynamic coupling processes, including ionospheric E-F coupling and inter-hemispheric coupling on the generation of ionospheric irregularities, becomes more prominent due to the significant dip angle and equipotentiality of magnetic field lines in the mid-latitude ionosphere. Polarized electric fields can map to different ionospheric regions and excite plasma instabilities which form ionospheric irregularities. Nevertheless, the mapping efficiency of a polarized electric field depends on the ionospheric background and spatial scale of the field. 展开更多

This paper presents the catalytic effects of Cu-Co~* catalyst on the decomposition of AN and AN/KDN based oxidizer and propellant samples. Ozawa-Flynn-Wall(OFW) iso-conversional method was used for the kinetic studies and to compute the activation energy(Ea) values for various decomposition steps of the prepared oxidizer and propellant samples in the temperature range of 50 e500C. TG-DTG experiments were carried out for both oxidizer and propellant samples at the heating rates of 3, 5, and 10C/min. AN/KDN based oxidizer samples were prepared by an evaporative co-crystallization method. Citric acid sol-gel method was used for the synthesis of Cu-Co~* catalyst. The propellant sample contains HTPB as the fuel binder along with other ingredients such as TDI, DOA, and Glycerol. The Cu-Co~* catalyst was used as 2% by weight to the total weight of catalyzed oxidizer and propellant samples. It was observed from the present study that, Cu-Co~* catalyst helps in reducing the Ea values for AN and AN based propellant samples. However, with the percentage increment of KDN in the AN crystals, Ea value increases.Further, it was observed that Cu-Co~* catalyst stabilizes the initial partial decomposition of KDN. 展开更多

Satellite launch vehicle lies at the cross-road of multiple challenging technologies and its design and optimization present a typical example of multidisciplinary design and optimization(MDO) process. The complexity of problem demands highly effi-cient and effective algorithm that can optimize the design.Hyper heuristic approach(HHA) based on meta-heuristics is applied to the optimization of air launched satellite launch vehicle(ASLV).A non-learning random function(NLRF) is proposed to con-trol low-level meta-heuristics(LLMHs) that increases certainty of global solution,an essential ingredient required in product conceptual design phase of aerospace systems.Comprehensive empirical study is performed to evaluate the performance advan-tages of proposed approach over popular non-gradient based optimization methods.Design of ASLV encompasses aerodynamics, propulsion, structure, stages layout, mass distribution, and trajectory modules connected by multidisciplinary feasible design approach. This approach formulates explicit system-level goals and then forwards the design optimization process entirely over to optimizer. This distinctive approach for launch vehicle system design relieves engineers from tedious, iterative task and en-ables them to improve their component level models.Mass is an impetus on vehicle performance and cost, and so it is considered as the core of vehicle design process. Therefore, gross launch mass is to be minimized in HHA. 展开更多
