The drainage of peatland areas for peat extraction, agriculture or bioenergy requires affordable, simple and reliable treatment methods that can purify waters rich in particulates and dissolved organic carbon. This work focused on the optimisation of chemical purification process for the direct dosage of solid metal salt coagulants. It investigated process requirements of solid coagulants and the influence of water quality, temperature and process parameters on their performance. This is the first attempt to provide information on specific process requirements of solid coagulants. Three solid inorganic coagulants were evaluated: aluminium sulphate, ferric sulphate and ferric aluminium sulphate. Pre-dissolved aiuminium and ferric sulphate were also tested with the objective of identifying the effects of in-line coagulant dissolution on purification performance. It was determined that the pre-dissolution of the coagulants had a significant effect on coagulant performance and process requirements. Highest purification levels achieved by solid coagulants, even at 30% higher dosages, were generally lower (5%-30%) than those achieved by pre-dissolved coagulants. Furthermore, the mixing requirements of coagulants pre-dissolved prior to addition differed substantially from those of solid coagulants. The pH of the water samples being purified had a major influence on coagulant dosage and purification efficiency. Ferric sulphate (70 mg/L) was found to be the best performing solid coagulant achieving the following load removals: suspended solids (59%-88%), total organic carbon (56%-62%), total phosphorus (87%-90%), phosphate phosphorus (85%-92%) and total nitrogen (33%-44%). The results show that the use of solid coagulants is a viable option for the treatment of peatland-derived runoff water if solid coagulant-specific process requirements, such as mixing and settling time, are considered. 展开更多

Experience from experimental studies shows that the efficiency of a column packing depends considerably on liquid flow management at the top of the column. Therefore, attention must be drawn to the need for a proper liquid distribution design in order to obtain good operation of the packed bed.The choice of the liquid distribution system depends on the geometry of the selected packings and on the operating conditions. One of the main parameters which determines the operation of the distribution and its influence on bed efficiency is the number of liquid feeders. Extensive systematic investigations were carried out under absorption, desorption and rectification conditions in beds of different dumped and regular packings, applying distributors with varying numbers of liquid outlets. The evaluations and modelling of the experimental results led to the determination of the proper number of feeder points, which mainly depends on the packing geometry represented by its open area and void fraction. The main results are shown in the form of diagrams and equations. 展开更多

Polymer dispersants are widely used as grinding aids to reduce the viscosity of mineral particle suspensions and to improve energy efficiency during fine grinding. The authors studied here the effects of polymer dispersants of different molecular structure on limestone suspension properties in wet stirred media milling. The polymers differed in their molecular weight and PDI (polydispersity index). Two traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants having a high PDI (over 2) and one made by controlled radical polymerization having a low PDI (1.2) were tested. It was noticed that these dispersants worked as electrosteric stabilizers and prevented the agglomeration of ground limestone particles. Their addition allowed increased solids concentrations to be used in the grinding experiments and at the same time lowered the particle size and specific energy consumption. The particle sizes obtained were about 1 μm regardless of the dispersant or its dose. The dispersant with a low PDI reduced the viscosity more than did the high PDI dispersants. The results indicate that higher solids concentrations can be used at the same dispersant dose when a low PDI dispersant is used, leading to energy savings via increased throughput. Alternatively, a lower dose of low PDI polymer dispersant than of a high PDI polymer dispersant can be used at the same solids concentration. 展开更多

TiO2 nanofibers decorated with Pt and Pd nanoparticles have been synthesized and studied in various photocatalytic processes. Excellent photocatalytic behavior in the decomposition of organic dyes in water, degradation of organic stains on the surface of flexible freestanding cellulose/catalyst composite films and in generation of hydrogen from ethanol using both suspended and immobilized catalysts are demonstrated. The performance of the nanofiber-based TiO2 materials is competitive with and in some cases outperforms--their conventional nanoparticle-based counterparts. In all cases, Pd-decorated TiO2 nanoparticles and nanofibers proved to be more efficient than their Pt-based counterparts, which could be explained on the basis of the formation of nano-sized Schottky interfaces at the contacts between TiO2 and metal nanoparticles. The feasibility of forming cellulose/catalyst composites provides a novel way of utilizing photocatalyst materials in large-area coatings and freestanding films. 展开更多
