It comprises of two structural forms viz., nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). This review provides a critical overview of the recent methods of bio- and chemo-mechanical processes for production of nanocellulose, their energy requirements and their functional properties. More than a dozen of pilot plants/commercial plants are under operation mostly in the developed countries, trying to exploit the potential of nanocellulose as reinforcing agent in paper, films, concrete, rubber, polymer films and so on. The utilization of nanocellulose is restricted mainly due to initial investment involved, high production cost and lack of toxicological information. This review focuses on the current trend and exploration of energy efficient and environment-friendly mechanical methods using pretreatments (both chemical and biological), their feasibility in scaling up and the future scope for expansion of nanocellulose application in diverse fields without impacting the environment. In addition, a nanocellulose quality index is derived to act as a guide for application based screening of nanocellulose production protocols.展开更多

In this technique, the traditional Brazilian disk (diametrical compression) test method for brittle materials is utilized along with conventional split-Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPB) for evaluating cylindrical disk specimens. The cylindrical disk specimen is held snugly in between two concave end fixtures attached to the incident and transmission bars. To eliminate the complexities of conventional strain gage application, a non-contact Laser Occluding Expansion Gage (LOEG) has been adapted for measuring the diametrical transverse expansion of the specimen under high-strain rate diametrical compressive loading. Failure diagnosis using high-speed digital photography validates the viability of utilizing this indirect test method for characterizing the tensile properties of xGnP (exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets) reinforced and additional CTBN (Carboxyl Terminated Butadiene Nitrile) toughened vinyl ester based nanocomposites. Also, quasi-static indirect tensile response agrees with previous investigations conducted using the traditional dog-bone specimen in direct tensile tests. Investigation of both quasi-static and dynamic indirect tensile test responses shows the strain rate effect on the tensile strength and energy absorbing capacity of the candidate materials. The contribution of reinforcement to the tensile properties of the candidate materials is presented.展开更多

The paper details the evaluation of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) structures to estimate the steering geometry parameters of four wheel vehicle. One of the aspects of vehicle performance is performance of steering geometry. Steering geometry parameters kingpin inclination angle, caster angle, camber angle, toe angle, scrub radius, toe in and toe out are measured using alignment techniques and caster/camber gauges. Suspension system components pivot upon a rubber bushing which is compressed between an inner and outer metal sleeve. Excess clearance developed in the joints of suspension system in turn causes changes in steering geometry. This is obviously essential for any automobile for a major challenge in terms of operation, performance, servicing and maintenance. ANN models applicable to each of these steering parameters were developed. Steering geometry is evaluated through the independent and dependent variables of front suspension. Dependent variables such as steering geometry parameters kingpin inclination angle, caster angle, camber angle, toe angle, scrub radius, toe in and toe out are determined with the help of independent variables. These dependent variables are validated through ANN simulation. The result obtained through ANN is in close agreement to the experimental observation.展开更多
