Sustained anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of botulinum toxin A in blepharospasm patients beyond motor symptom control

BACKGROUND The previous studies have primarily focused on the influence of botulinum toxin A(BoNT-A)injection on emotions during the period of peak motor symptom improvement in blepharospasm patients,based on facial feedback hypothesis.AIM To evaluate the sustained anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of BoNT-A in blepharospasm patients beyond motor symptom control.METHODS We recruited benign essential blepharospasm patients with BoNT-A treatment and collected their data to compare scale scores of Jankovic Rating Scale,Blepharospasm Disability Index,Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS),Hamilton Anxiety Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale between pretreatment(baseline)and pre-reinjection(treatment),to further assess the effects of repeated treatments with BoNT by using sub-group analyses in the certain special states.RESULTS A total of 21 eligible blepharospasm patients were with the mean age of 58.4 years and a male-to-female ratio of 1:6.Significantly decreases in the subscale scores of SDS and SAS,including SDS well-being index,decreased capacity and hard to decide,SAS inability to sit still and headache were showed at post-a single BoNT-A injection when scale scores of Jankovic Rating Scale and Blepharospasm Disability Index were matched between baseline and posttreatment.With each additional BoNT-A injection,the odds ratio of patients with the moderate depressive symptoms decreased by 92.6%.Moreover,BoNT treatment remained a decrease in the subscale scores of SDS and SAS in patients with repeated injections.CONCLUSION This study is to demonstrate that repeated BoNT-A injection have a long-lasting relief for anxiety and depressive symptoms in blepharospasm even after its motor symptom-modulating effects have diminished. 展开更多

Neurostimulation remarkably alleviates the symptoms in a variety of brain disorders by modulating the brain-wide network. However, how brain-wide effects on the direct and indirect pathways evoked by focal neurostimulation elicit therapeutic effects in an individual patient is unknown. Understanding this remains crucial for advancing neural circuit-based guidance to optimize candidate patient screening, pre-surgical target selection, and post-surgical parameter tuning. To address this issue, we propose a functional brain connectome-based modeling approach that simulates the spreading effects of stimulating different brain regions and quantifies the rectification of abnormal network topology in silico. We validated these analyses by pinpointing nuclei in the basal ganglia circuits as top-ranked targets for 43 local patients with Parkinson’s disease and 90 patients from a public database. Individual connectome-based analysis demonstrated that the globus pallidus was the best choice for 21.1% and the subthalamic nucleus for 19.5% of patients. Down-regulation of functional connectivity(up to 12%) at these prioritized targets optimally maximized the therapeutic effects. Notably, the priority rank of the subthalamic nucleus significantly correlated with motor symptom severity(Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale III) in the local cohort. These findings underscore the potential of neural network modeling for advancing personalized brain stimulation therapy,and warrant future experimental investigation to validate its clinical utility. 展开更多

To address the challenges posed by high reaction temperatures and the slow kinetics of Mg-based alloys with high hydrogen storage density,Mg−RE−TM(RE=rare earth,TM=metallic element)alloys have been extensively researched and hold great promise.In this study,a series of Mg−RE−TM based Mg_(90)Y_(2)Ce_(2)Ni_(3)Al_(3-x)Sc_(x)(x=0,0.3,0.6,0.9,1.2)alloys were prepared.The addition of Sc element has been found to enhance the activation and kinetic properties of the alloy.Compared with the significant differences in the first four dehydrogenation curves of the Sc0 sample,the first activated dehydrogenation curve of the Sc1.2 alloy overlaps with the fully activated dehydrogenation curve.The dehydrogenation activation energy decreased from 96.56 kJ/mol in the Sc0 alloy to 63.69 kJ/mol in the Sc0.9 alloy.Through analysis of the microstructure,phase composition,and hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics of the alloy,the mechanisms for improving the hydrogen storage properties of the alloy were elucidated.The nucleation-growth-impingement Avrami model was employed to accurately simulate the hydrogen storage kinetics.The results showed that stage II was prolonged and accelerated at high temperature,and the growth rate and hydrogen storage of stage I were increased at low temperature in hydrogen absorption.Microstructure analysis revealed the presence of Mg,CeMg_(12),Mg_(47)Y,and YNi_(2)Al_(3) phases in the Sc0 sample.Upon the addition of Sc element,a new phase,ScNiAl,was formed,and the coarse grain size of the main phase was significantly refined.This refinement provides faster diffusion channels for hydrogen atoms,accelerating the phase transition between Mg alloys and hydrides.The microstructure changes explain the improved activation properties,effective hydrogen absorption and desorption capacity,and kinetic properties of the Mg-based samples. 展开更多

Rare earth(RE)elements have been successfully utilized in solid-state hydrogen storage as hydrogen-absorbing elements with excellent hydrogen storage properties in terms of safety and efficiency.RE-Mg-based hydrogen storage materials with high magnesium content are considered to be one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials for application due to their high mass/volume hydrogen storage density,moderate required hydrogen pressure,good reversibility,non-toxicity,and harmlessness.Furthermore,RE-Mg-based materials with low magnesium content and superlattice structure show great potential for application in the field of solid-state hydrogen storage.They are also widely used as anode materials for nickel-metal hydride batteries.In this paper,we comprehensively summarized and evaluated the organization and hydrogen storage properties of different RE-Mg system alloys(Mg-RE,Mg-RE-TM(TM=transition metals),and superlattice-type RE-Mg-TM)and the catalytic effect and mechanisms of catalysts on RE-Mg system alloys.The interactions between the types of RE elements,the contents of RE elements,the crystal structures,and the catalysts with the microstructure morphology and hydrogen storage properties of RE-Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys were established.The intrinsic mechanisms between microstructure morphology,phase structure,phase composition,and hydrogen storage properties of alloys with different RE-Mg-based systems were elucidated.By comparing the differences and characteristics between the organizational structures and hydrogen storage properties of different RE-Mg systems,a feasible idea and solution for the rational design and development of RE-Mg-based alloys with high hydrogen storage capacity,low cost,and fast hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics was proposed. 展开更多

Investigation of Polyphenolic constituents of Diaphragma juglandis Fructus and development of antioxidant instant tea

Diaphragma juglandis(D.juglandis)Fructus is a brownish lamellar structure located between walnut kernels.As a traditional Chinese herbal medicine,it exhibits therapeutic effects including spleen-strengthening,kidney consolidation,astringency,diuresis,and heat-clearing.In this study,the polyphenolic constituents of D.juglandis and its functional instant tea were investigated in this study.Three polyphenolic compounds were isolated from 70%ethanol extract of D.juglandis Fructus as 2-methoxy juglone,regiolone and quercetin.The HPLC method was established for determination of the content of quercetin in the instant tea samples under the premise that the methodology was verifi ed to meet the standard requirements.The preparation process of D.juglandis Fructus instant tea was optimized through single factor experiments and Box-Behnken design-response surface methodology and the optimal conditions were determined as follows:feed rate of 10 mL/min,inlet temperature of 151℃,andβ-cyclodextrin addition of 9%.Then the antioxidant activity of each sample was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays.The results showed that the quercetin had significant antioxidant activity.The instant tea group demonstrated superior antioxidant effects compared to the extracts group at 50,200,and 800μg/mL(P<0.001),likely due to the optimized spray-drying process,which might have enhanced the solubility,stability,and bioavailability of the active compounds.The results provided critical foundational data for the deep processing and comprehensive utilization of D.juglandis Fructus. 展开更多

The escalating global temperature,with 2024 as the hottest year,emphasizes the critical link between climate change and kidney health.Extreme heat,a conse-quence of global warming,causes multifaceted effects on human physiology,including renal function alterations.This review investigates physiological and molecular mechanisms of heat stress-induced kidney injury,including acute kidney injury,chronic kidney disease(CKD),and urinary stone formation.It highlights how heat stress contributes to renal dysfunction via dehydration,electrolyte imbalances,and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and antidiuretic hormone pathways,particularly in vulnerable populations like outdoor workers,the elderly,and pregnant women.The review also emphasizes the roles of heat shock proteins(HSPs)-HSP27,HSP60,HSP70,and HSP90-in maintaining cellular integrity by preventing protein aggregation and repairing damaged proteins in renal tissues.Dysregulation of these proteins under prolonged heat stress is implicated in CKD progression.This review highlights the urgent need for targeted public health interventions:(1)Hydration;(2)Workplace cooling;(3)Community education;and(4)Developing pharmaco-logical therapies targeting HSPs.A multidisciplinary approach involving nephrology,environmental science,and public health is essential to mitigate the increasing burden of heat-related kidney disease in the era of global climate change. 展开更多

The radula is a crucial adaptation for food-processing in molluscs.A deeper understanding of the interaction between the radula and the preferred food is lacking,complicating the inference of the precise ecological roles of radular structures.This study presents the first experimental set-up that allows to study the influence of the radular morphology,specifically the degree of tooth-tooth interlocking(so-called collective effect),on the feeding efficiency.For this purpose,physical 3D models of the teeth were designed using CAD software and 3D printing technique.The feeding efficiencies with models of different degree of interlocking were determined by tensile tests,pulling the models trough agar gels with different viscosities.The forces generated by the models and the masses of the removed gel fragments were determined.We found,that radular models with a high degree of tooth–tooth interlocking performed best as they were able to remove most agar.We additionally broke the teeth and determined,that the teeth with the highest degree of interlocking could resist to highest force.Overall,the study highlights the complex interplay between radular morphology and its ecological function,suggesting that even minor morphological alterations can significantly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of food gathering.Understanding these interactions cannot only shed light on the ecological adaptations of molluscs,but provide further insights into development of more effective grinding,scraping,and cleaning technical devices. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Sepsis-associated liver injury(SALI)refers to secondary liver function impairment caused by sepsis,patients with SALI often have worse clinical outcomes.The early identification and assessment of the occurrence and progression of SALI are pressing issues that urgently need to be resolved.AIM To investigate the relationship between iron metabolism and SALI.METHODS In this prospective study,139 patients were recruited,with 53 assigned to the SALI group.The relationships between SALI and various iron metabolism-related biomarkers were examined.These biomarkers included serum iron(SI),total iron-binding capacity(TIBC),serum ferritin,transferrin,and transferrin saturation.To identify independent risk factors for SALI,both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed.Additionally,receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was utilized to assess the predictive value of these biomarkers for the occurrence of SALI.RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences in age,sex,body mass index,Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores(excluding liver function),or APACHE II scores between the two groups of patients.Compared with the sepsis group,the SALI group presented significantly higher SI(P<0.001),TIBC(P<0.001),serum ferritin(P=0.001),transferrin(P=0.005),and transferrin saturation levels(P<0.001).Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that SI(odds ratio=1.24,95%confidence interval:1.11-1.40,P<0.001)and TIBC levels(odds ratio=1.13,95%confidence interval:1.05-1.21,P<0.001)were independent predictors of SALI.Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that SI and TIBC had areas under the curve of 0.816 and 0.757,respectively,indicating moderate predictive accuracy for SALI.CONCLUSION Iron metabolism disorders are closely associated with the development of SALI,and SI and TIBC may serve as potential predictive biomarkers.The combined use of SI and TIBC has superior diagnostic efficacy for SALI.These findings provide valuable insights for the early identification and management of SALI among patients with sepsis. 展开更多

Aiming to provide optimal solutions to the sluggish kinetics of Mg(BH_(4))_(2),this study proposes,for the first time,a novel machine learning model to predict dehydrogenation behaviors of modified Mg(BH_(4))_(2).Notably,numerous data points are collected from temperatureprogrammed,isothermal,and cyclic dehydrogenation behaviors,a neural network model is proposed by using multi-head attention mechanisms,which exhibits the highest predictive performance compared to traditional machine learning models.The study also ranks different variables influencing dehydrogenation processes,employing interpretable analysis to identify critical variable thresholds,offering guidance for the experimental parameter design.The model can also be adapted to scenarios involving co-doping of hydrides and catalysts in Mg(BH_(4))_(2) system and proved high accuracy and scalability in predicting dehydrogenation curves under diverse conditions.Employing the model,performance predictions for a series of undeveloped Mg(BH_(4))_(2) co-doping systems can be made,and superior dehydrogenation catalytic effects of fluorinated graphite(FGi)are uncovered.Real-world experimental validation of the optimal Mg(BH_(4))_(2)-LiBH_(4)-FGi system confirms consistency with model predictions,and performance enhancement attributes to experimental parameter optimization.Further characterizations provide mechanistic insights into the synergistic interactions of FGi and LiBH_(4).This work paves the way for advancing utilization of machine learning in the high-capacity hydrogen storage field. 展开更多

Berries are a good source of natural antioxidants. In the present study, the total antioxidant capacity and phenolic composition of three berry fruits (blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry) cultivated in Nanjing were investigated. Blueberry, with a Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) value of 14.98 mmol Trolox/100 g dry weight (DW) exhibited the strongest total antioxidant capacity using both the 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and the 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. Blueberry also had the highest total phenolic content (TPC, 9.44 mg gallic acid/g DW), total flavonoid content (TFC, 36.06 mg rutin/g DW), and total anthocyanidin content (TAC, 24.38 mg catechin/g DW). A preliminary analysis using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that the blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry samples tested contained a range of phenolic acids (including gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, eUagic acid, and cinnamic acid) and various types of flavonoids (flavone: luteolin; flavonols: rutin, myricetin, quercetrin, and quercetin; flavanols: gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, catechin, and catechin gallate; anthocyanidins: malvidin-3-galactoside, malvidin-3-glucoside, and cyanidin). In particular, the blueberries had high levels of proanthocyanidins and anthocyanidins, which might be responsible for their strong antioxidant activities. These results indicate a potential market role for berries (especially blueberries) as a functional food ingredient or nutraceutical. 展开更多

AIM:To investigate the role of hepatitis B virus X-protein(HBx)-induced reactive oxygen species(ROS)on liver carcinogenesis in HBx transgenic mice and HepG2-HBx cells.METHODS:Cell growth rate was analyzed,and through western blotting,mitogenic signaling was observed.Endogenous ROS from wild and HBx transgenic mice and HepG2-Mock and HBx cells were assayed by FACS-calibur.Identification of oxidized and reduced phosphatase and tensin homolog(PTEN)was analyzed through N-ethylmaleimide alkylation,nonreducing electrophoresis.RESULTS:We observed that the cell-proliferation-related phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt pathway is activated by HBx in vivo and in vitro.Increased ROS were detected by HBx.Tumor suppressor PTEN,via dephosphorylation of Akt,was oxidized and inactivated by increased ROS.Increased oxidized PTEN activated the mitogenic pathway through over-activated Akt.However,treatment with ROS scavenger N-acetyl cysteine can reverse PTEN to a reduced form.Endogenously produced ROS also stimulated HBx expression.CONCLUSION:HBx induced ROS promoted Akt pathways via oxidized inactive PTEN.HBx and ROS maintained a positive regulatory loop,which aggravated carcinogenesis. 展开更多

AIM To evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG supernatant(LGG-s) on the expression of serotonin transporter(SERT) in rats with post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome(PI-IBS).METHODS Campylobacter jejuni 81-176(1010 CFU/m L) was used to induce intestinal infection to develop a PI-IBS model. After evaluation of the post-infectious phase by biochemical tests, Dn A agarose gel electrophoresis, abdominal withdrawal reflex(AWR) test, and the intestinal motility test, four PI-IBS groups received different concentrations of LGG-s for 4 wk. The treatments were maintained for 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0 wk during the experiment, and the colons and brains were removed for later use each week. SERT m Rn A and protein levels were detected by real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively.RESULTS The levels of SERT m Rn A and protein in intestinal tissue were higher in rats treated with LGG-s than in control rats and PI-IBS rats gavaged with PBS during the whole study. Undiluted LGG-s up-regulated SERT m Rn A level by 2.67 times compared with the control group by week 2, and SERT m Rn A expression kept increasing later. Double-diluted LGG-s was similar to undiluted-LGG-s, resulting in high levels of SERT m Rn A. Triple-diluted LGG-s up-regulated SERT m Rn A expression level by 6.9-times compared with the control group, but SERT m Rn A expression decreased rapidly at the end of the second week. At the first week, SERT protein levels were basically comparable in rats treated with undiluted LGG-s, double-diluted LGG-s, and triplediluted LGG-s, which were higher than those in the control group and PBS-treated PI-IBS group. SERT protein levels in the intestine were also comparable in rats treated with undiluted LGG-s, double-diluted LGG-s, and triple-diluted LGG-s by the second and third weeks. SERT m Rn A and protein levels in the brain had no statistical difference in the groups during the experiment.CONCLUSION LGG-s can up-regulate SERT m Rn A and protein levels in intestinal tissue but has no influence in brain tissue in rats with PI-IBS. 展开更多

The Mg90Ce5 RE5(RE=La,Ce,Nd)alloys were prepared by a vacuum induction furnace and their micro structure,phase transformation,thermodynamics and kinetics property were systematically studied by XRD,SEM,TEM,and PCT characterization methods.The result shows that the activated alloys are composed of Mg/MgH2 and corresponding REH2+x with nanoscale.The REH2+x grain with Ce and La or Nd functional group have lower nucleation potential barriers than CeH2+x grains as the nucleation location,thus improve the hydrogen absorption kinetics of these alloys among which the Mg90Ce5Nd5 alloy can absorb 90%of the hydrogen within 2 min at 320℃.In addition,the Mg90Ce10 alloy has the lowest activation energy with 103.2 kJ mol-1 and the fastest desorption kinetics,which can release 5 wt%of the hydrogen within 20 min at 320℃.This is a correlation with grain size and the in-suit formed CeH2.73/CeO2 interface.Moreover,the co-doping Ce and La or Nd can effectively disorganize the thermodynamic stability of Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys to a certain degree,but the dehydrogenation kinetics of that still is restricted by the recombination energy of hydrogen ions on the surface. 展开更多

To improve the cyclic stability of La-Mg-Ni system alloy, as-cast La0.75Mg0.25Ni3.5Co0.2 alloy was annealed at 1123, 1223, and 1323 K for 10 h in 0.3 MPa argon. The microstructure and electrochemical performance of different annealed alloys were investigated systematically by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical experiments. The results obtained by XRD and SEM showed that the as-cast and annealed (1123 K) alloys had multiphase structure containing LaNis, (La, Mg)2(Ni, Co)7 and few LaNi2 phases. When annealing temperatures approached 1223 and 1323 K, LaNi2 phase disappeared. The annealed alloys at 1223 and 1323 K were composed of LaNi5, (La, Mg)2(Ni, Co)7 and (La, Mg)(Ni, Co)3 phases. With increasing annealing temperature, the maximum discharge capacity of the alloy decreased monotonously, but the cyclic stability was improved owing to structure homogeneity and grain growth after annealing, as well as the enhancement of anti-oxidation/corrosion ability and the suppression of pulverization during cycling in KOH electrolyte. 展开更多

Over the years IBS has been described fr... Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is one of the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions. It represents a significant healthcare burden and remains a clinical challenge. Over the years IBS has been described from a variety of different perspectives; from a strict illness of the gastrointestinal tract(medical model) to a more complex multi-symptomatic disorder of the brain-gut axis(biopsychosocial/psychosomatic model). In this article we present aspects of the pathophysiology and the non-pharmacological treatment of IBS based on current knowledge. Effects of conditioned stress and/or traumatic influences on the emotional system(top-down) as well as effects on the intestine through stressors,infection,inflammation,food and dysbiosis(bottom-up) can affect braingut communication and result in dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system(ANS),playing an important role in the pathophysiology of IBS. Conditioned stress together with dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and the emotional system may involve reactions in which the distress inside the body is not recognized due to low body awareness. This may explain why patients have difficulty identifying their symptoms despite dysfunction in muscle tension,movement patterns,and posture and biochemical functions in addition to gastrointestinal symptoms. IBS shares many features with other idiopathic conditions,such as fibromyalgia,chronic fatigue syndrome and somatoform disorders. The key to effective treatment is a thorough examination,including a gastroenterological examination to exclude other diseases along with an assessment of body awareness by a body-mind therapist. The literature suggests that early interdisciplinary diagnostic cooperation between gastroenterologists and body-mind therapists is necessary. Re-establishing balance in the ANS is an important component of IBS treatment. This article discusses the current knowledge of body-mind treatment,addressing the topic from a practical point of view. 展开更多

The as-spun Ti_(1−x)La_(x)Fe_(0.8)Mn_(0.2)(x=0,0.01,0.03,0.06,0.09,molar fraction)alloys were prepared by melt spinning.The effects of La substitution for Ti on the microstructure,hydrogen storage kinetics and thermodynamics of TiFe-type Ti−Fe−Mn-based alloy were investigated.The as-spun alloys hold the TiFe single phase,which transforms to TiFeH_(0.06),TiFeH,and TiFeH_(2) hydrides after hydrogenation.La substitution promotes the formation of micro-defects(such as dislocations and grain boundaries)in the alloys,thus facilitating hydrogen diffusion.In addition,the hydrogen storage kinetics properties are improved after introducing La element.With the rise of La content,the hydrogen storage capacity decreases firstly and then increases,but the absolute value of hydriding enthalpy change(|ΔH|)increases firstly and then reduces.When x=0.01,the maximum value of|ΔH|is obtained to be(25.23±0.50)kJ/mol for hydriding,and the alloy has the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity of(1.80±0.04)wt.%under the conditions of 323 K and 3 MPa. 展开更多

La-Mg-Ni-Mn-based AB2-type La(1–x)CexMgNi(3.5)Mn(0.5)(x=0–0.4) alloys were prepared by melt spinning technology. The detections of X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) indicated that the experimental alloys consisted of a major phase LaMgNi4 and a secondary phase LaNi5. With spinning rate growing, the abundance of LaMgNi4 phase increased and that of LaNi5 phase decreased. Moreover, with the melt spinning rate increasing, both the lattice constants and cell volumes increased, and further accelerated the grains refinement of the alloys. The electrochemical tests showed that the as-spun alloys possessed excellent capability of activation, achieving the maximum discharge capacities just at the first cycling without any activation needed. As for the as-spun alloys, its discharge potential characteristics could be improved obviously by adopting the technology of melt spinning. In addition, the melt spinning raised electrochemical cycle stability of the alloys, the main reason was that the melt spinning enhanced the anti-pulverization ability of the alloys. With spinning rate increasing, the discharge capacity of the alloys presented a tendency to increase firstly then decrease. Moreover, the electrochemical kinetics of the alloys showed the same trend under fixed condition. 展开更多

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective technique for treating Parkinson's disease (PD) in the middle and advanced stages. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is the most common target for clinical treatment using DBS. While STN-DBS can significantly improve motor symptoms in PD patients, adverse cognitive effects have also been reported. The specific effects of STN-DBS on cognitive function and the related mechanisms remain unclear. Thus, it is imperative to identify the influence of STN-DBS on cognition and investigate the potential mechanisms to provide a clearer view of the various cognitive sequelae in PD patients. For this review, a literature search was performed using the following inclusion criteria: (1) at least 10 patients followed for a mean of at least 6 months after surgery since the year 2006; (2) pre- and postoperative cognitive data using at least one standardized neuropsychological scale; and (3) adequate reporting of study results using means and standard deviations. Of -170 clinical studies identified, 25 cohort studies (including 15 self-controlled studies, nine intergroup controlled studies, and one multi-center, randomized control experiment) and one meta- analysis were eligible for inclusion. The results suggest that the precise mechanism of the changes in cognitive function after STN-DBS remains obscure, but STN-DBS certainly has effects on cognition. In particular, a progressive decrease in verbal fluency after STN-DBS is consistently reported and although executive function is unchanged in the intermediate stage postoperatively, it tends to decline in the early and later stages. However, these changes do not affect the improvements in quality of life. STN-DBS seems to be safe with respect to cognitive effects in carefully-selected patients during a follow-up period from 6 months to 9 years. 展开更多
