Problems associated with energy distribution, consumption and management are undoubtedly some of the most significant problems that energy utilities face globally. For instance, when development takes place, the demand for electrical power and in particular domestic electrical energy also increases. Thus improvement of energy distribution policies becomes important for utilities and energy decision making agencies. The authors had earlier [1] [2] provided a mixed strategy 2-player game model for a residential energy consumption profile for winter and summer seasons of the year using a dual-occupancy high-rise (11-storey) building located within the Polytechnic of Namibia, Windhoek. The optimum energy values and the corresponding probabilities obtained from the model extend the usual simple statistical analyses of minimum and maximum energy values and their associated percentages. The time-block and the week-day strategies depict critical probabilistic values worth considering for decision purposes, especially, the necessity and justification for a dual tariff regime for the residential and workplace residents of the building as against the existing institutional uniform energy tariff policy. However, this paper presents extended results of post-optimality analyses for the winter and summer seasons, and thus provides the optimal range of energy values over which the energy consumption can change without changing the optimal tariff estimate parameters obtained from the mixed strategy of critical energy game values. The post-optimality analyses also provide extended information on the mixed strategy of non-optimal week-day solutions obtained from the game model, hence validating one of the essential roles of sensitivity analysis, namely, investigation of sub-optimal solutions. From application point of view, the post-optimality model provides a useful tool for Utilities, especially for identifying flexibility range of optimal break-even energy values for consumers, such as in the informal settlements where metering is rather a challenge to determine varied or non-uniform tariffs. 展开更多

This paper presents the energy saving method by applying the voltage control technique on a single-phase AC source to a thyristor rectifier and an IGBT inverter with LC filter. Based on the LC filter parameter, the values of the gain for the controller are obtainable. The proposed controller structure consist</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">s</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> of two loops arranged in a cascaded model. The output of the first loop is the capacitor current. This current is added to the load current in order to obtain the current reference. This reference current value will be compared with the inverter current which produces the error signal to be fed into the second loop in the cascade system. The output of the second loop is the inverter voltage. This voltage is added to the load voltage to produce the voltage reference. This reference is fed to the pulse width modulation generator via the controller and compared with the triangular wave. This energy-saving circuit is designed in blocks using MATLAB Simulink. 展开更多

The wrinkle period and morphology of a metal thin film on an elastic substrate is typically controlled by modifying the substrate before carrying out additional metal deposition steps.Herein,we show that a simultaneously selective and reactive sputtering plasma that modifies the surface of a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)substrate while not reacting with the metal during the deposition process decreases the wrinkle wavelength and induces additional wrinkling components and features such as ripples or folds. The selective reaction of the nitrogen plasma with PDMS functionalizes the siloxane surface into silicon oxynitride. This hardens the immediate surface of PDMS,with a quadratic increase in the Young’s modulus as a function of the sputtering flow ratio. The increase in the critical strain mismatch and the corresponding presence of folds in the nitrogen-modified wrinkled silver film form a suitable plasmonic platform for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS),yielding an enhancement factor of 4.8×105 for detecting lipids. This enhancement is linked to the emergence of electromagnetic hotspots from surface plasmon polariton coupling between the folds/wrinkles,which in turn enables the detection of low concentrations of organics using SERS.Furthermore, when strained, the nitrogen-modified wrinkles enhance electrical conductivity by a factor of 12 compared with unmodified films. Finally, the optical properties of the substrate can be tuned by altering the N2 content. The simple addition of nonreactive nitrogen to silver sputtering enables simultaneous PDMS hardening and growth of the silver film and together provide a new avenue for tuning wrinkling parameters and enhancing the electrical conductivity of pliable surfaces. 展开更多

Mining from simulation data of the golden model in hardware design verification is an effective solution to assertion generation. While the simulation data is inherently incomplete,it is necessary to evaluate the truth values of the mined assertions. This paper presents an approach to evaluating and constraining hardware assertions with absent scenarios.A Belief-fail Rate metric is proposed to predict the truth/falseness of generated assertions.By considering both the occurrences of free variable assignments and the conflicts of absent scenarios,we use the metric to sort true assertions in higher ranking and false assertions in lower ranking. Our Belief-failRate guided assertion constraining method leverages the quality of generated assertions. The experimental results show that the Belief-failRate framework performs better than the existing methods. In addition, the assertion evaluating and constraining procedure can find more assertions that cover new design functionality in comparison with the previous methods. 展开更多

In the current era of cloud computing, data stored in the cloud is being generated at a tremendous speed, and thus the cloud storage system has become one of the key components in cloud computing. By storing a substantial amount of data in commodity disks inside the data center that hosts the cloud, the cloud storage system must consider one question very carefully: how do we store data reliably with a high efficiency in terms of both storage overhead and data integrity? Though it is easy to store replicated data to tolerate a certain amount of data losses, it suffers from a very low storage efficiency. Conventional erasure coding techniques, such as Reed-Solomon codes, are able to achieve a much lower storage cost with the same level of tolerance against disk failures. However, it incurs much higher repair costs, not to mention an even higher access latency. In this sense, designing new coding techniques for cloud storage systems has gained a significant amount of attention in both academia and the industry. In this paper, we examine the existing results of coding techniques for cloud storage systems. Specifically, we present these coding techniques into two categories: regenerating codes and locally repairable codes. These two kinds of codes meet the requirements of cloud storage along two different axes: optimizing bandwidth and I/O overhead. We present an overview of recent advances in these two categories of coding techniques. Moreover, we introduce the main ideas of some specific coding techniques at a high level, and discuss their motivations and performance. 展开更多

This paper develops a novel approach to track power system state evolution based on the maximum correntropy criterion, due to its robustness against non-Gaussian errors. It includes the temporal aspects on the estimation process within a maximum-correntropy-based extended Kalman filter(MCEKF),which is able to deal with both nonlinear supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA)and phasor measurement unit(PMU)measurement models.By representing the behavior of the state variables with a nonparametric model within the kernel density estimation,it is possible to include abrupt state transitions as part of the process noise with non-Gaussian characteristics. Also,a novel strategy to update the size of Parzen windows in the kernel estimation is proposed to suppress the effects of suspect samples.By properly adjusting the kernel bandwidth, the proposed MCEKF keeps its accuracy during sudden load changes and contingencies,or in the presence of bad data.Simulations with IEEE test systems and the Brazilian interconnected system are carried out.The results show that the method deals with non-Gaussian noises in both the process and measurement, and provides accurate estimates of the system state under normal and abnormal conditions. 展开更多
