For the production of energy source,we must reckon with the energy balance of the whole process. Densification and processing of microalgae can consume 50% - 70% of the energy that can be extracted from the cells,?therefore the cultivation should use such a little energy as it possible. In closed cultivation systems,?there are three main energy intensive steps: artificial illumination, dissolution of gas compounds and mixing. We have carried out our measurements in our lab-scale screening photobioreactor system for the investigation of the most energy effective program for aeration. We have found the aeration program considerable solution for lower energy consumption in?algae cultivation.展开更多

Over four decades down the line, this methodology has entrenched itself in research circles around the world. While the technique was developed, to begin with, for energy (heat) recovery, it has since then expanded to embrace several other fields, and enabled optimisation of resource utilisation in general. The motive behind this article is to perform a focused, selective review of recent case studies from the developing world and transition economies, having ‘pinch analysis’ in their titles and thereby as their ‘core, crux and gist’, during the period 2008-2018. The resources focused on, include heat energy, electrical energy, water, solid waste, money, time, land (surface area), storage space (volume), human resources, mass of resources in general and hydrogen, while a handful of publications have their focus on carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases in general) emissions. Multi-dimensional pinch analysis promises to be an effective tool for sustainability analysis in the years to come;most importantly in the developing world where social well-being and economic development are priorities in the years ahead, and they ought to be attained by a simultaneous truncation of the environmental footprint, in other words, an optimisation of resource utilisation as well as adverse environmental impacts. In other words, the focus ought to be on sustainable production (efficiency) and consumption (sufficiency).展开更多

Their biodegradability, mechanical properties, and thermal properties were also studied in this paper. A general full factorial experimental approach was used to determine effective parameters on the mechanical properties of the prepared films. ST/PVA/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of mechanical analysis show that ST/PVA films with higher contents of PVA have much better mechanical properties. In thermal analysis, it is found that the addition of Ti02 nanoparticles improves the thermal stability of the films. SEM micrographs, taken from the fracture surface of samples, illustrate that the addition of PVA makes the film softer and more flexible. The results of soil burial biodegradation indicate that the biodegradability of ST/PVA/TiO2 films strongly depends on the starch proportion in the film matrix. The degradation rate is increased by the addition of starch in the films.展开更多

Epigenetics refers to the heritable changes that do not involve any structural changes in the target gene, i.e., DNA sequence and protein sequence. Thus, these epigenetic aberrations are potentially reversible, allowing the malignant cells to revert to a state with more normal characteristics. The use of epigenetics is emerging as an effective and promising approach to treat cancer. Epigenetic drugs, which target two well- known epigenetic pathways, namely, DNA methyltransferases and histone deacetylases, are already being applied for the cancer treatment. In the current study, an overview regarding the under-standing of epigenetic alterations in the development of cancer and the current state of epigenetic drug discovery is provided.展开更多

Biogas from waste is a renewable fuel with very low emissions during combustion. To further reduce the use of fossil fuels, more biogas substrates are necessary. Pulp and paper mill sludge is a large untapped reservoir of potential biogas. Pulp and paper mill sludge was collected from a mill that produces both pulp and paper and has a modified waste activated sludge system as part of its wastewater treatment. Pre-treatments were chosen heat (70 ~C or 140℃) combined with either acid (pH 2 or pH 4) or base (pH 9 or pH 11, obtained with Ca(OH)2 or NaOH). Biogas potential was tested by anaerobic digestion batch assays under mesophilic conditions. All pre-treatments were tested in six replicates. Biogas volume was measured with a gas-tight syringe and methane concentration was measured with a gas chromatograph. The methane yield from sludge subjected to thermal pre-treatment at 70℃ did not differ from the untreated sludge, but thermal pre-treatment at 140℃ had a positive effect. Within the 70℃ thermal pre-treatment group, the pH 2 acid was the most successful chemical pre-treatment, and Ca(OH)2 pH 9 had the least effect with no measurable improvement in methane yield. For the 140 ℃ thermal pre-treatment group, acid and NaOH impacted methane production negatively, while the Ca(OH)2-treated sludge did not differ from sludge with no chemical pre-treatment. In conclusion, thermal pre-treatment at 70℃ showed no effect, whereas, pre-treatment at 140℃ improved methane yield with 170%, and for this sludge additional, chemical pre-treatments are unnecessary.展开更多

The CO2 from stack gases of the various flows of manufacturing and the nitrogen from certain technical wastewater are necessary for the plants even as algae. The transaction of CO2 with this object and the utilization stand a good chance by hungarian clime with the teamwork from the technical environment. The technology is a new solution in Hungary which eases utterance of the impurities. As a result of our research we expanded alga polities which utilize the CO2 from refinery’s stack gas and they grow intensively in the continental clime, too. The critical points of the technology are the concentration of the algae suspension and the extraction because of the high investment and operating costs and high operational time. The algae technology in this direction depends on this step. Our aim is to separate the algae mass faster and more economical from the starter solution. The optimization of the separating operations and technologies takes notice of the environmental and economic aspects.展开更多
