Background The antibacterial and immunomodulatory activities of bacteriocins make them attractive targets for development as anti-infective drugs.Although the importance of the enteric nervous system(ENS)in the struggle against infections of the intestine has been demonstrated, whether it is involved in bacteriocins anti-infective mecha-nisms is poorly defined. Results Here,we demonstrated that the bacteriocin Microcin J25(J25)significantly alleviated diarrhea and intesti-nal inflammation in piglets caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)infection.Mechanistically, macrophage levels were significantly downregulated after J25 treatment, and this was replicated in a mouse model.Omics analysis and validation screening revealed that J25 treatment induced significant changes in the dopaminergic neuron pathway, but little change in microbial structure. The alleviation of inflammation may occur by down-regulating dopamine receptor(DR)D1 and the downstream DAG-PKC pathway, thus inhibiting arachidonic acid decomposition, and the inhibition of macrophages may occur through the up-regulation of DRD5 and the downstream cAMP-PKA pathway, thus inhibiting NF-κB.Conclusions Our studies’findings provide insight into the changes and possible roles of the ENS in J25 treatment of ETEC infection, providing a more sophisticated foundational understanding for developing the application poten-tial of J25. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is a global public health concern that affects about 2 billion people and causes 1 million people deaths yearly.HBV is a bloodborne disease and healthcare workers(HCWs)are a high-risk group because of occupational hazard to patients’blood.Different regions of the world show a highly variable proportion of HCWs infected and/or immunized against HBV.Global data on serologic markers of HBV infection and immunization in HCWs are very important to improve strategies for HBV control.AIM To determine the worldwide prevalence of HBV serological markers among HCWs.METHODS In this systematic review and meta–analyses,we searched PubMed and Excerpta Medica Database(Embase)to identify studies published between 1970 and 2019 on the prevalence of HBV serological markers in HCWs worldwide. We also manually searched for references of relevant articles.Four independent investigators selected studies and included those on the prevalence of each of the HBV serological markers including hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg),hepatitis e antigen(HBeAg),immunoglobulin M anti-HBc,and anti-HBs.Methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed and random-effect model meta-analysis resulted in the pooled prevalence of HBV serological markers HBV infection in HCWs.Heterogeneity(I²)was assessed using theχ²test on Cochran’s Q statistic and H parameters.Heterogeneity’sources were explored through subgroup and metaregression analyses. This study is registered with PROSPERO,number CRD42019137144.RESULTS We reviewed 14059 references, out of which 227 studies corresponding to 448 prevalence data among HCWs(224936 HCWs recruited from 1964 to 2019 in 71 countries)were included in this meta-analysis.The pooled seroprevalences of current HBsAg,current HBeAg,and acute HBV infection among HCWs were 2.3%[95% confidence interval(CI):1.9-2.7],0.2%(95%CI:0.0-1.7),and 5.3%(95%CI:1.4-11.2),respectively.The pooled seroprevalences of total immunity against HBV and immunity acquired by natural HBV infection in HCWs were 56.6%(95%CI:48.7-63.4)and 9.2%(95%CI:6.8-11.8),respectively.HBV infection was more prevalent in HCWs in low-income countries, particularly in Africa. The highest immunization rates against HBV in HCWs were recorded in urban areas and in high-income countries including Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific.CONCLUSION New strategies are needed to improve awareness,training,screening,vaccination,post-exposure management and treatment of HBV infection in HCWs,and particularly in low-income regions. 展开更多

This work aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementation of Parkia biglobosa fruit pulp flour in the CPAVI chicken ration on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of local chickens. This study involved 50 local chicks of eight weeks of age. Chickens were divided into 5 groups of 10 chicks corresponding to five experimental rations containing 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% pulp from fruits of P. biglobosa. The nutritional composition of P. biglobosa fruit pulps were analyzed, then growth parameters and carcass characteristics were measured. The results showed that the fruit pulps of P. biglobosa were rich in metabolizable energy (4015.02 ± 0.21 Kcal/kg), crude fiber (16.88% ADF and 19.81% NDF) and potassium (2.45% ± 0.01%). Thus, the group of local chickens fed the diet containing 1% supplementation had a significantly higher live weight (1200.85 g) and carcass yield (91.99 g) (P supplementation. Additionally, individual feed consumption and average daily gain of the group at 1% supplementation were higher. In short, the flour from the pulp of the fruit of Parkia biglobosa can be supplemented up to 1% in the CPAVI pullet type feed for local chickens. 展开更多

Urban areas deal with the emergence or resurgence of transmissible and non-transmissible diseases, linked in particular to urban lifestyle and sanitation issues. Human practices create or maintain conditions that favour mosquitoes’ breeding. This study investigates mosquito breeding sites characteristics in Ouagadougou, from September to November 2020. Mosquito larvae were sampled across three districts in the city, chosen based on socio-demographic and urbanization levels. The larval collection from natural breeding sites using the ladle technique and larvae transferred to can. For artificial sites, the larvae were transferred directly into can Larvae were collected from 83 breeding sites, predominantly artificial: 39% in plastic containers, 23% in clay containers, and 13% in metal, while natural sites like puddles accounted for only 25%. A total of 8352 mosquitoes were identified as six species: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles gambiae s.l., Anopheles funestus, and Mansonia africana. Ae. aegypti was the most prevalent, found across all breeding site types, whereas Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles gambiae were mainly in natural sites. Physico-chemical analysis of the breeding sites revealed that conductivity and turbidity were consistent across breeding sites. The highest median pH values were observed in ceramic and metal containers. Water temperature showed minimal variation. The presence of Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus correlated with higher water temperature, turbidity, and conductivity. Anopheles funestus preferred high pH environments. Conversely, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Mansonia africana were less influenced by these parameters. The findings underscore the need for community involvement in water and waste management to control mosquito populations, especially targeting the Aedes aegypti species. Raising awareness among locals about proper water storage and disposal practices is crucial for effective vector control. 展开更多

Previous study using protein electrophoresis shows no polymorphism in 44 nuclear loci of Sichuan golden monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), which limits our understandings of its population genetic patterns in the nuclear genome. In order to obtain sufficient information, we scanned 14 microsatellite loci in a sample of 32 individuals from its three major habitats (Minshan, Qinling and Shen-nongjia). A considerable amount of polymorphisms were detected. The average heterozygosities in the local populations were all above 0.5. The differentiations among local populations were significant. There was evidence of geneflow among subpopulations, but geneflow between Qinling and Shennongjia local populations was the weakest. Minshan and Qinling populations might have gone through recent bottlenecks. The estimation of the ratio of the effective population sizes among local populations was close to that from census sizes. Comparisons to available mitochondria data suggested that R. roxellana’s social structures played an important role in shaping its population genetic patterns. Our study showed that the polymorphism level of R. roxellana was no higher than other endangered species; therefore, measures should be taken to preserve genetic diversity of this species. 展开更多
