In this study, a constant response vibration test is proposed for nonlinear element extraction. The method is based on the principle of Harmonic Balance Method (HBM). The stiffness or damping can be regarded as constant for particular steady displacement or velocity response. The displacement or velocity is controlled as a constant in the test. Then the measured Frequency Response Function(FRF) is obtained. The equivalent stiffness or damping is estimated using FRFs for a particular vibration response level. The displacement-dependent stiffness and velocity-dependent damping are fitted to describe the unknown non-linearity. The nonlinear spring and damping force can be obtained by combining the fitting results with HBM using first-order expansion. Constant response vibration test is illustrated through experimental setup to verify its effectiveness. Experimental results show that the procedure is capable of achieving an accurate parameter identification of nonlinear damping and stiffness, which is hopeful for industrial application. 展开更多

The objective of our study is to evaluate the concentration of radon (86Rn) inside houses in the town of Koudougou in order to estimate its impact on the health of the population. Indeed, when uranium-rich minerals are found near the surface of the ground, radon concentrations can reach tens of becquerels per cubic meter in enclosed spaces. Given the nature of the geological base of Burkina Faso, this situation is quite probable and certain places that are sometimes poorly ventilated (house, school, office, etc.) can have radon levels high enough to constitute a health problem for occupants. Thus, twenty-four (24) sample houses were identified. In each house, the Corentium digital detector was between 0.8 m and 2 m for at least one week in a place where the occupants estimate that they spend more time of time and measure the concentration of radon in the long term and short term. The recorded data allowed us to determine the Absorbed Dose and the Annual Effective Dose of radon gas for each house in order to estimate the Risk of Cancer and the probable Number of Cases of Lung Cancer per million inhabitants. Thus, the results indicate that the long-term radon concentration varies between 6 Bq/m3 and 285 Bq/m3 respectively in houses 11 and 4 compared to 1 Bq/m3 to 208 Bq/m3 in the short term in the same houses. Also, in the long term, in control houses 1, 3 and 4, the radon level is above the recommended threshold interval. For the short term, these are houses 1, 3, 4 and 17 respectively with 110 Bq/m3, 142 Bq/m3, 208 Bq/m3 and 105 Bq/m3. As for the long-term and short-term effective doses, only houses 1, 3, 4, 17 and 24 have values between 3 - 10 Sv/year. The estimation of the relative risk of lung cancer gives values relatively close to unity and between 1.006 and 1.142 with an average of 1.035 and that of the Number of Lung Cancer Cases per million inhabitants gives values between 8 and 166 with an average of 42. Thus, we can conclude that with the exception of houses 1, 3, 4 and 17, the radon concentrations are relatively low in the twenty-four control houses in the city of Koudougou. The lifestyle of the populations can well explain this situation when we know that people are in the habit of always leaving doors and windows open, especially when they are not sleeping. We can therefore say that the risk of population exposure to radon gas is relatively low in the town of Koudougou. 展开更多

In this study, residual stresses in heat treated specimen were measured by using ESPI (Electronic Speckle-Pattern Interferometry) combined with the hole-drilling method. The specimen, made of SUS 304 austenitic stainless steel, was quenched and water cooled to room temperature.Numerical simulation using a hybrid FDM/FEM package was also carried out to simulate the heat treatment process. As a result, the thermal stress fields were obtained from both the experiment and the numerical simulation.By comparision of stress fields, results from the experimental method and numerical simulation well agreed to each other, therefore, it is proved that the presented experimental method is applicable and reliable for heat treatment induced residual stress measurement. 展开更多

Traditional techniques based on image fusion are arduous in integrating complementary or heterogeneous infrared(IR)/visible(VS)images.Dissimilarities in various kind of features in these images are vital to preserve in the single fused image.Hence, simultaneous preservation of both the aspects at the same time is a challenging task. However, most of the existing methods utilize the manual extraction of features;and manual complicated designing of fusion rules resulted in a blurry artifact in the fused image. Therefore, this study has proposed a hybrid algorithm for the integration of multi-features among two heterogeneous images.Firstly, fuzzification of two IR/VS images has been done by feeding it to the fuzzy sets to remove the uncertainty present in the background and object of interest of the image.Secondly, images have been learned by two parallel branches of the siamese convolutional neural network(CNN)to extract prominent features from the images as well as high-frequency information to produce focus maps containing source image information. Finally, the obtained focused maps which contained the detailed integrated information are directly mapped with the source image via pixelwise strategy to result in fused image.Different parameters have been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed image fusion by achieving 1.008 for mutual information(MI),0.841 for entropy(EG),0.655 for edge information(EI),0.652 for human perception(HP),and 0.980 for image structural similarity(ISS).Experimental results have shown that the proposed technique has attained the best qualitative and quantitative results using 78 publically available images in comparison to the existing discrete cosine transform(DCT),anisotropic diffusion&karhunen-loeve(ADKL),guided filter(GF),random walk(RW),principal component analysis(PCA),and convolutional neural network(CNN)methods. 展开更多

Most computational structural engineers are paying more attention to applying loads rather than to DBCs (Displacement Boundary Conditions) because most static stable mechanical structures are working under already prescribed displacement boundary conditions. In all of the computational analysis of solving a system of algebraic equations, such as FEM (Finite Element Method), three translational and three rotational degrees of freedom (DOF) should be constrained (by applying DBCs) before solving the system of algebraic equation in order to prevent rigid body motions of the analysis results (singular problem). However, it is very difficult for an inexperienced engineer or designer to apply proper DBCs in the case of thermal stress analysis where no prescribed DBCs or constraints exist, for example in water quenching for heat treatment. Moreover, improper DBCs cause incorrect solutions in thermal stress analysis, such as stress concentration or unreasonable deformation phases. To avoid these problems, we studied a technique which performs the thermal stress analysis without any DBCs; and then removes rigid body motions from the deformation results in a post process step as the need arises. The proposed technique makes it easy to apply DBCs and prevent the error caused by improper DBCs. We proved it was mathematically possible to solve a system of algebraic equations without a step of applying DBCs. We also compared the analysis results with those of a traditional procedure for real castings. 展开更多

This research studies the process of 3D reconstruction and dynamic concision based on 2D medical digital images using virtual reality modelling language (VRML) and JavaScript language, with a focus on how to realize the dynamic concision of 3D medical model with script node and sensor node in VRML. The 3D reconstruction and concision of body internal organs can be built with such high quality that they are better than those obtained from the traditional methods. With the function of dynamic concision, the VRML browser can offer better windows for man-computer interaction in real-time environment than ever before. 3D reconstruction and dynamic concision with VRML can be used to meet the requirement for the medical observation of 3D reconstruction and have a promising prospect in the fields of medical imaging. 展开更多

Solidif ication and f luid f low analysis using computer simulation is a current common practice. There is also a high demand for thermal stress analysis in the casting process because casting engineers want to control the defects related to thermal stresses, such as large deformation and crack generation during casting. The riser system is an essential part of preventing the shrinkage defects in the casting process, and it has a great inf luence on thermal phenomena. The analysis domain is dramatically expanded by attaching the riser system to a casting product due to its large volume, and it makes FEM mesh generation diff icult. However, it is diff icult to study and solve the above proposed problem caused by riser system using traditional analysis methods which use single numerical method such as FEM or FDM. In this paper, some research information is presented on the effects of the riser system on thermal stress analysis using a FDM/FEM hybrid method in the casting process simulation. The results show the optimal conditions for stress analysis of the riser model in order to save computation time and memory resources. 展开更多

Shrinkage cavity may be detrimental to mechanical performances of casting parts. As a consequence, design engineers often use overly large safety factors in many designs due to insufficient understanding of quantitative effects of shrinkage cavity defects. In this paper, process of Al alloy wheel impact test was computationally analyzed for both the wheel models with and without shrinkage cavity defects.Based on shrinkage cavity data obtained from industrial CT (Computerized Tomography),the shrinkage cavity defects were modeled with SSM (Shape Simplification Method),which reconstructs shrinkage cavity defects to hollow spheroid primitives. After the impact simulation was conducted, the results show that under impact test condition, the wheel considering shrinkage cavity defects may fracture while the sound-assumed wheel may not. 展开更多

It is important to analyse the casting product and the mold at the same time considering thermal contraction of the casting and thermal expansion of the mold. The analysis considering contact of the casting and the mold induces the precise prediction of stress distribution and the defect such as hot tearing. But it is difficult to generate FEM mesh for the interface of the casting and the mold. Moreover the mesh for the mold domain spends lots of computational time and memory for the analysis due to a number of meshes. Consequently we proposed the virtual mold technique which only uses mesh of the casting part for thermal stress analysis in casting process. The spring bar element in virtual mold technique is used to consider the contact of the casting and the mold. In general, a volume of the mold is much bigger than that of casting part, so the proposed technique decreases the number of mesh and saves the computational memory and time greatly. In this study, the proposed technique was verified by the comparison with the traditional contact technique on a specimen. And the proposed technique gave satisfactory results. 展开更多

Contamination by heavy metals of soil, water and agricultural products is currently a major problem of environmental pollution in the world. The consumption of plants contaminated with heavy metals can be the cause of diseases such as cancers, the number of cases of which is only growing. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and cadmium (Cd) in plants from the vegetable farm of LOUMBILA and the assessment of health risks linked to the consumption of plants. In this paper, the concentration of heavy metal in vegetable was measured using the model AANALYST 200 flame atomic absorption spectrometer from PERKIN ELMER. The level of Zn in the vegetables from Loumbila vegetable farms ranged between 42.95 mg/kg and 78 mg/kg. The concentrations of Zn in the studies vegetables were higher than the permissible levels set by FAO/WHO (20 mg/kg). The concentration Pb in vegetables varied from 1.73 mg/kg to 27.02 mg/kg. All concentrations of Pb in vegetable were higher than the permissible levels set by FAO/WHO (0.3 mg/kg). Daily intake of Ni, Cr and Pb was higher than the MTDI, so consumption of vegetables from Loumbila vegetable farms can lead to health problems related to Ni, Cr and Pb. In vegetables from LOUMBILA, the estimated daily intake decreased in the following order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr. The Hazard index values for carrot, onion, lettuce, green bean and onion leaves were greater than (>) one (1) which indicates that there might be a potential health risk to those consuming these vegetables. The Target Cancer Risk (TCR) analysis also revealed the potential cancer risk induced by Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr and Pb due to the consumption of carrot, onion leaves, onion, lettuce, green bean, and bell pepper because their TCR values were above the threshold. 展开更多
