Objective: Stroke is perceived as a serious illness although it is preventable, and lifestyle alterations can be made to reduce its risk. Improvement of stroke care should be achieved through awareness of public, especially through high-risk group. Henceforth, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nursing intervention on improving awareness of high-risk people about stroke prevention. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used to carry out this study, where a purposive sample of 80 adult patients at high risk for stroke were enrolled while they were attending the out-patient clinics of Zagazig University Hospitals for follow-up treatment;they were divided into two groups: case (40 patients) and control (40 patients). An interview questionnaire was used to assess patients’ knowledge regarding warning signs, risk factors, and immediate treatment;attitude;and their practice for prevention for stroke at pretest and posttest. Results: The study revealed the poor level of knowledge, bad level of preventive behavior, and negative attitude regarding stroke prevention at pre-intervention. However, after intervention, the high-risk people had fair level of knowledge with moderate practice for stroke prevention and positive attitude, with statistically significant difference between pre-post intervention and between the case and control groups. Conclusions: The study revealed that the nursing intervention seemed to change the knowledge, practice, and attitude of subjects regarding stroke prevention. This, in turn, implies that awareness of prevention of stroke and high-risk factor control could be important to reduce the burden of stroke in Egypt. Thus, further research on a larger scale is required to improve population knowledge and behavior for stroke prevention and control. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Depression is a common psychological disorder often associated with genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. This condition is characterized by low mood and decreased conscious activity and can lead to severe consequences such as suicidal thoughts.Respiratory failure,a disorder of pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange,is frequently complicated by depression, aggravating the condition and creating complications in treatment.Patients with both conditions tend to exhibit poor compliance with medical advice, resulting in adverse outcomes such as sleep disorders, arrhythmias, and electrolyte imbalances. Therefore, effective nursing interventions are crucial for improving patient outcomes. While routine nursing care can provide basic support, dedicated nursing, which involves specialized and personalized care by highly trained professionals, may offer additional benefits.AIM To examine the effect of dedicated nursing intervention on medical advice compliance and adverse event incidence in patients with depression complicated by respiratory failure.METHODS A total of 160 patients with depression complicated by respiratory failure admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from January to December 2024 were randomly categorized into a control group(n=80)receiving routine nursing care and observation group(n=80)receiving routine nursing combined with dedicated nursing care. The establishment of a specialized nursing team;the development of a personalized nursing plan;and the implementation of comprehensive care strategies targeting emotional support, sleep improvement, pulmonary function enhancement, and adherence to medical advice were included in the dedicated nursing intervention.Emotional state[evaluated using the Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)],sleep quality[assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)],hope level[measured using the Herth Hope Scale(HHS)],pulmonary function[comprising forced vital capacity(FVC)and forced expiratory volume in the first second(FEV1)],exercise endurance[6-minute walk distance test(6MWD)],compliance with medical advice, and incidence of adverse events were compared between the two groups.RESULTS No significant differences were observed in SDS,PSQI,HHS,FVC,FEV1,6MWD,or compliance with medical advice between the two groups(P>0.05)before the intervention. However, after the intervention, the control group exhibited significantly lower SDS and PSQI scores;higher HHS scores;greater improvements in FVC,FEV1,and 6MWD;and higher compliance with medical advice compared with the control group(P<0.05).In addition, the incidence of adverse events was significantly lower in the control group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Dedicated nursing intervention significantly improves emotional state, sleep quality, hope level, pulmonary function, exercise endurance, and compliance with medical advice while reducing adverse events in patients with depression complicated by respiratory failure. Therefore, dedicated nursing appears to be an effective approach to enhance patient outcomes in this population. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Given their responsibility for the well-being of individuals, nurses with advanced mental health literacy, along with strong holistic nursing competencies and professional self-efficacy,are better equipped to assess both the mental and physical health of their patients, leading to the provision of holistic nursing care.AIM To investigate the relationship between nurses’mental health literacy levels and their holistic nursing competencies,as well as their nursing professional selfefficacy.METHODS This study is cross-sectional,correlational research. The study sample consisted of a total of 261 volunteer nurses working in a training and research hospital and a state hospital between March 11,2024 and April 8,2024.Data were collected face to face with the“Descriptive Data Form”,“Mental Health Literacy Scale(MHLS)”,“Holistic Nursing Competence Scale(HNCS)”,and the“Nursing Profession Self-Efficacy Scale(NPSES)”.RESULTS The mean scale scores for the nurses were as follows:MHLS:95.88±11.67;HNCS:179.46±33.82;NPSES:64.79±11.24.A low-level positive correlation was found between the total scores of the MHLS,HNCS,and NPSES,and a moderate-level positive correlation was observed between the total scores of the HNCS and NPSES.These correlations were statistically significant(P<0.05).CONCLUSION It is recommended that initiatives be undertaken to enhance the mental health literacy and holistic nursing competencies of nurses and that similar studies be conducted with nurses in different institutions and with a larger number of nurses. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Older patients often experience thirst after general anesthesia for gastrointestinal surgery, particularly during the post-anesthesia care unit(PACU)phase.Thirst not only compromises patient comfort but also induces anxiety, which may hinder recovery.Although previous studies have addressed postoperative thirst, research specifically examining thirst experiences and nursing needs in older patients remains limited.AIM To explore thirst experiences and nursing needs of older PACU patients following gastrointestinal surgery, aiming to inform targeted interventions.METHODS This study employed a phenomenological approach within a qualitative research framework.A purposeful sampling method was used to select 12 older patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery under general anesthesia at a tertiary hospital in Shanghai between November and December 2024.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method.Themes were extracted from the interview data.RESULTS Analysis of the interview data identified four main themes and eight subthemes:(1)Intense sensations of thirst post-surgery(subjective experience of thirst and duration of thirst);(2)Emotional experiences of thirst-related discomfort(anxiety, irritability, and helplessness);(3)Practical challenges in relieving thirst(limitations of current interventions and nursing response time);and(4)Patient expectations of nursing care(desire for more timely interventions and expectation for more proactive attention from nursing staff).CONCLUSION Older patients frequently experience substantial thirst discomfort after gastrointestinal surgery under general anesthesia.A multidisciplinary perioperative intervention plan is essential to alleviate these symptoms and enhance postoperative comfort. 展开更多
