The stress minimization multi-material topology optimization(MMTO)approach has recently attracted significant attention because of its applications in aerospace and mechanical engineering.Nonetheless, the stress minimization MMTO approach may result in stress surpassing the material's tolerance limit, potentially culminating in failure. This research proposes a novel way for imposing stress constraints on each material to regulate their respective stress levels. The fundamental concept is that each material possesses its own interpolation function for the stress model. The maximum von Mises stress for each material can be established with the definition of an upper limit, ensuring that the materials will perform safely and effectively. This aids topological structures in resisting failure and augmenting strength.A multi-physics system including thermoelastic and self-weight loads is concurrently examined alongside stress limitations. The global stress constraint utilizes the p-norm function, and the adjoint method is used to derive sensitivity. This work employs a three-field strategy utilizing density filtering and Heaviside projection functions to mitigate the artificial stress in low density. The technique is assessed through two-dimensional(2D)and three-dimensional(3D)examples,illustrating the influence of stress limits on the compliance minimization under heat and self-weight loads. The optimized results indicate a substantial decrease in the stress levels accompanied by a minor gain in compliance, while maintaining the stress within the specified range for all materials. 展开更多

Unbonded post-tensioned(PT)concrete systems are widely used in safety-critical structures, yet model-ing practices for prestress implementation and tendon-concrete interaction remain inconsistent. This study investigates the effects of sheath(duct)implementation and confinement assumptions through nonlinear finite element analysis.Four modeling cases were defined, consisting of an explicit sheath without tendon-concrete confinement(S)and three no-sheath variants with different confinement levels(X,N,A).One-way beams and two-way panels were analyzed, and panel blast responses were validated against experimental results. In both beams and panels, average initial stress levels were similar across models, through local stress concentrations appeared when the sheath was modeled.Under blast loading, these local effects became critical, and the sheath-implemented model reproduced experimental behavior most accurately, whereas non-implemented models deviated.Reduced blast intensity diminished the differences among models, thereby reaffirming that sheath-induced localization and damage propagation are critical factors. These findings highlight the importance of explicit sheath implementation for realistic numerical assessment of unbonded PT structures under extreme loads. 展开更多

Conventional low-carbon concrete design approaches have often overlooked carbonation durability and the progressive loss of cover caused by surface scaling, both of which can increase the long-term risk of reinforcement corrosion. To address these limitations, this study proposes an improved design framework for low-carbon slag concrete that simultaneously incorporates carbonation durability and cover scaling effects into the mix proportioning process.Based on experimental data,a linear predictive model was developed to estimate the 28-day compressive strength of slag concrete, achieving a correlation coefficient of R=0.87711 and a root mean square error(RMSE)of 7.55 MPa.The mechanism-based equation exhibits strong physical interpretability,as each parameter corresponds to a clear physical process, satisfying the requirements of design codes for physical significance.By integrating the strength and carbon-emission models, the carbon-emission efficiency was further analyzed.Across all water–binder ratios(0.3,0.4,0.5),CO_(2) emissions per unit strength decreased steadily with increasing slag content, indicating that carbon efficiency is primarily governed by slag replacement rather than the water/binder ratio.Four design cases, all with a design strength of 30 MPa,were then evaluated to illustrate the combined effects of carbonation and scaling. In Case 1,without considering carbonation durability, the carbonation depth after 50 years exceeded the 25 mm cover, leading to potential corrosion. In Case 2,when carbonation durability was considered, the required actual strength increased to 31.28 MPa.When mild cover scaling of 3 mm was introduced(Case 3),the required strength rose to 34.59 MPa,and under severe scaling of 10 mm(Case 4),it increased to 45.73 MPa.These results indicate that intensified scaling demands higher strength and lower water/binder ratios to maintain durability.Overall, the proposed framework quantitatively balances strength, durability, and embodied carbon, supporting sustainable low-carbon concrete design. 展开更多

Therefore, it is important for architects to make the light and space be in harmony with each other. In this study, we analyzed the works of Alvaro Siza with a view to understand the conceptual value of the light expressed in his works and his principles in controlling it. According to the results of the study, the Siza’s architecture is not a mere theoretical one trapped inside formality, but is a sensual and experiential one based on the locality. He was willing to use void spaces to invite the light in free-flowing plans, in order to invigorate and extend architectural spatiality to create deeper visual effect. In addition, the refined light in his works helped visitors experience the continuous forms and spaces by their own movements, while using the changes of the light to stimulate the interest of visitors and highlight the sequence of spaces. 展开更多

Effective assessment is inseparable from good teaching and learning. Just as a good tutor would practice different techniques of teaching, an assessor would usually use different strategies of assessment. Moreover, the different activities of assessment, such as teaching, are additionally executed at various times during the semester, thus, we can know in which way the student is learning. An assessment strategy lays out a well thoroughly considered choice of assessment methods that are aligned with the aims and learning outcomes. Because align the assessment with a specific kind of learning outcome, the tutor needs to choose a suitable technique of assessment. This paper draws upon a case study of the first year architectural design at Pharos University as another way to deal with realizing "how to design your assessment plan". Throughout the form of criteria based assessment, assessment can help to review the students and instructors feeling and reactions. Finally, we can learn to assist towards enhancing student learning through assessment. So, we can attract the consideration regarding the advantages of reviewing current assessment practices, and of accepting different ways to deal with assessment methods, in this manner profiting together student and tutor. 展开更多

With the increasing demand for secure infrastructure such as hydrogen refueling stations, chemical plants, and energy storage systems, the need for protective structures capable of withstanding close-in detonations has become more critical.Existing design guidelines for protective walls(e.g.,UFC 3-340-02)primarily address mid-and far-field explosions, providing limited insights into near-field effects.Considering the effect of slight slopes(<40°)on reducing maximum reflected overpressure is deemed negligible. This study investigated the effectiveness of a reinforced concrete(RC)modular protection system(MPS)incorpo rating a diagonally tapered wall in attenuating re flected overpressures from closein detonations.Full-scale field experiments using a 51.3 kg TNT charge, representing the explosion energy of a typical hydrogen vessel rupture, demonstrated that a wall with a 7°slope significantly outperformed a vertical wall of equivalent concrete volume in terms of blast resistance.Observed structural responses included cracking, horizontal shear failure, and overturning.Complementary simulations using a validated computational fluid dynamics(CFD)model showed that the tapered wall reduced peak overpressure by 30%-40%compared to an equivalent vertical wall. This result highlights the potential of minor geometric modifications to enhance blast resilience. The tapered design effectively redirects incident blast waves, reducing localized damage while also conserving material, thus preserving modular benefits such as ease of transport and reusability. These findings suggest that diagonally tapered RC-based MPSs can offer a practical and resilient solution for industrial and military applications subject to near-field or sequential blast threats. 展开更多

The cement-fly ash composite expansive stable grout was prepared to deal with the problems of poor stability and volume shrinkage of ordinary cement grout, and the effects of fly ash ratio and water-binder ratio on the properties of the grout and its consolidation were analyzed. In addition, the mineral composition and microstructural characteristics of grout consolidation with different mixing ratios were investigated. The experimental results indicate that fly ash and the increase of water-binder ratio reduce the strength of the grout consolidation, and increase the fluidity, bleeding rate, and setting time of the composite grout. However, the magnitude of the fly ash-induced strength reduction decreases with time. And the effect of fly ash on the setting time and compressive strength becomes more significant with the water-binder ratio. The later expansion performance of grout consolidation(after 7-42 d)is improved by fly ash.But the expansibility of consolidation with fly ash decreases at the early curing stage, and the reduction amplitude of expansion rate is smaller and the reduction age is shorter with the water-binder ratio increase.Fly ash improves the corrosion resistance performance of grout consolidation, and the corrosion resistance coefficient rises first and then falls with the fly ash ratio. And for 0.6:1 water-binder ratio, the corrosion resistance coefficient of the samples mixed with fly ash are greater than 100%.XRD and SEM show that fly ash inhibited the formation of ettringite in the early stage, which is unfavorable to the expansion of the slurry, and with the increase of age, this effect gradually weakened. 展开更多

Computed tomography(CT)can inspect the internal structure of concrete with high resolution, but improving the accuracy of measurements remains a key challenge due to the reliance on complex image processing and significant manual intervention. This study aims to optimize CT scanning parameters to enhance the accuracy of measuring crack widths and rebar volumes in reinforced concrete.Nine sets of specimens, each with varying rebar diameters and concrete cover thicknesses, were scanned before and after corrosion using an Optima CT scanner, followed by three-dimensional reconstructions using Avizo software. The effects of threshold values and“Erosion”coefficients on measurement accuracy were evaluated. The results demonstrated that an optimal lower threshold of 2950,combined with an‘Erosion’coefficient of 6,effectively limits the measurement error of rebar volumes to within 1%.The optimal threshold for measuring crack widths was influenced by the crack width, rebar diameter, and concrete cover thickness.Additionally,an optimized formula for determining crack measurement thresholds was proposed. This study significantly improves the accuracy of CT-based non-destructive testing(NDT)techniques, providing valuable insights for structural health monitoring(SHM). 展开更多

An improved meshfree moving-Kriging(MK)formulation for free vibration analysis of functionally graded material-functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite(FGM-FGCNTRC)sandwich shells is first proposed in this article. The proposed sandwich structure consists of skins of FGM layers and an FGCNTRC core. This structure possesses all the advantages of FGM and FGCNTRC,including high electrical or thermal insulating properties, high fatigue resistance, good corrosion resistance, high stiffness, low density, high strength, and high aspect ratios.Such sandwich structures can be used to replace conventional FGM structures. The present formulation has been established by using an improved meshfree MK method and the first-order shear deformation shell theory(FSDT).The effective material characteristics of the FGM-skin layers and the FGCNTRC core were calculated using the rule of mixture.Key parameters and factors such as the thickness-to-radius ratio, the length-to-radius ratio,layer-thickness ratios,CNT distributions, the volume fraction of CNTs,the power-law index, and various boundary conditions were rigorously investigated.A nonlinear CNT distribution that we term FG-nX is first proposed in this work, and many new results of FGM-FGCNTRC sandwich shells have been provided. 展开更多

A numerical method is presented for the large deflection in elastic analysis of tensegrity structures including both geometric and material nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearity is considered based on both total Lagrangian and updated Lagrangian formulations, while the material nonlinearity is treated through elastoplastic stress-strain relationship. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are solved using an incremental-iterative scheme in conjunction with the modified Newton-Raphson method.A computer program is developed to predict the mechanical responses of tensegrity systems under tensile, compressive and flexural loadings.Numerical results obtained are compared with those reported in the literature to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed program. The flexural behavior of the double layer quadruplex tensegrity grid is sufficiently good for lightweight large-span structural applications. On the other hand, its bending strength capacity is not sensitive to the self-stress level. 展开更多

To compensate the deformation error of super-heavy-duty CNC floor type boring-milling machine, based on force analysis theory, the law and compensation measures of deformation of ram are researched. Based on the principle of torque (force) balance of the ram components, the formulas of compensation forces and compensation torques are derived, the relations between compensation forces (compensation torques) and the stroke distance of the ram are given. Its goveming differential equation was derived by the Bemoulli equation in an unsteady-isentropic form. Numerical examples were provided to study the additive damping caused by background leakage in laminar and turbulent flow, and the influence of background leakage on fluctuating internal pressure response was quantized. A series of models for low-rise building with various opening ratios and background leakage were designed and wind tunnel tests were conducted. The field of shape grammars spans 47 years, but its potential in the practice and education of art, architecture, and engineering remains far from being utilized.Similarly, while reverse engineering in some engineering disciplines is well-established,its implementation in architectural design remains under-represented.By combining the two domains, this paper develops a novel method that merges the power of shape grammars as a parsing tool in reverse engineering to decode the morphogenesis of visual compositions in architectural design. The merged power is demonstrated by decoding the formal language of a faqade design of a case study,in which seemingly few simple rules can derive surprisingly complex compositions. The rules of the language can then be used to reconstruct parts of the case facade. Most shape grammars in the architectural literature are applied on formal historical precedents, but the subject of morphological analysis in this paper is contemporary and has a style that exhibits non-orthogonal configurations, which initially appear far from being standardized or subjected to regulatory tectonic rules. The faqade derivation grammar is explained and resynthesized in various computations to explore emergent articulations that display its predictive, synthetic, and generative powers in addition to typical analytic ones. 展开更多

An experimental program was initiated to investigate the seismic performance of built-up laced steel brace members. Quasi-static testing of twelve typical steel built-up laced member (BLM) specimens was conducted. These were designed to span a range of parameters typically encountered for such members based on findings from a survey of commonly used shapes and details that have been historically used. The specimens were subdivided into groups of three different cross-sectional shapes, namely built-up I-shape section, and built-up box shapes buckling about the x or the y axis. Within each group, global and local buckling slenderness ratios had either kl/r values of 60 or 120, and b/t ratios of 8 or 16. The specific inelastic cyclic behavior germane to each specimen, and general observations on overall member hysteretic behavior as a function of the considered parameters, are reported. A companion paper (Lee and Bruneau 2008) investigates this observed response against predictions from analytical models, and behavior in the perspective of system performance. 展开更多

The bending creep and its disturbance effects of red sandstone rock beam and oil shale rock beam were studied by adopting the self-developed gravitation level style rock creep test machine and bending creep test system, and the constitutive equations were established. It is found that fracture morphology of rock beams under no disturbance load is regular, cracking position of fractures is on part of loading concentration, the crack starts from a neutral plane. However, fracture morphology of rock beams under disturbance load is irregular, cracking position of fractures deviates from a neutral plane.Delayed instability of rock beam occurs for some time under constant disturbance load. When disturbance load is beyond a certain range, suddenly instability of occurs rock beam in a certain time. The results show that there is a guiding significance for creep stability in the geotechnical engineering fields. 展开更多

The Annular Crossed Cable-Truss Structure(ACCTS) is a new type of Tensile Spatial Structure with a configuration suitable to cover large-span stadiums. Its configuration has potential to perform well in resisting disproportionate collapse. However, its disproportionate collapse resistance hasn't yet been analyzed in depth. In this study, numerical and experimental research was carried out to investigate the performance of ACCTS under cable rupture. The numerical analysis was done for ten cable-rupture plans using LS-DYNA(explicit method) and the experimental test on an ACCTS with a diameter of 17.15 m was performed for three cable-rupture plans. It is concluded that, while deflections increase with the number of removed cables, an ACCTS does not undergo a disproportionate collapse and it provides a promising structural concept for tensile spatial structures. 展开更多
