The replacement of Li by Na in an analogue battery to the commercial Li-ion one appears a sustainable strategy to overcome the several concerns triggered by the increased demand for the electrochemical energy storage....The replacement of Li by Na in an analogue battery to the commercial Li-ion one appears a sustainable strategy to overcome the several concerns triggered by the increased demand for the electrochemical energy storage.However,the apparently simple change of the alkali metal represents a challenging step which requires notable and dedicated studies.Therefore,we investigate herein the features of a NaFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(NFMP)cathode with triphylite structure achieved from the conversion of a LiFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(LFMP)olivine for application in Na-ion battery.The work initially characterizes the structure,morphology and performances in sodium cell of NFMP,achieving a maximum capacity exceeding 100 mAh g^(−1)at a temperature of 55℃,adequate rate capability,and suitable retention confirmed by ex-situ measurements.Subsequently,the study compares in parallel key parameters of the NFMP and LFMP such as Na^(+)/Li^(+)ions diffusion,interfacial characteristics,and reaction mechanism in Na/Li cells using various electrochemical techniques.The data reveal that relatively limited modifications of NFMP chemistry,structure and morphology compared to LFMP greatly impact the reaction mechanism,kinetics and electrochemical features.These changes are ascribed to the different physical and chemical features of the two compounds,the slower mobility of Na^(+)with respect to Li^(+),and a more resistive electrode/electrolyte interphase of sodium compared with lithium.Relevantly,the study reveals analogue trends of the charge transfer resistance and the ion diffusion coefficient in NFMP and LFMP during the electrochemical process in half-cell.Hence,the NFMP achieved herein is suggested as a possible candidate for application in a low-cost,efficient,and environmentally friendly Na-ion battery.展开更多

H20; [Zn bis(-2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid)], Zn(HMTBa)2 a chelated Zn methionine hydroxy analogue; and Zn-Methionine), as measured using multiple indices of animal performance in ROSS 308 broilers. Methods: Three experiments were conducted in broiler chicks fed a semi-purified diet. All birds were fed a Zn-deficient diet (8.5 mg/kg diet) for 1 wk, and then provided with the experimental diets for 2 wks. Results: Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial design with two levels of Cu (8 vs. 250 mg/kg diet from CuSO4) and two Zn sources at 30 mg/kg [ZnSO4. H20 vs. Zn(HMTBa)2]. Elevated Cu impaired growth performance only in birds fed ZnSO4. Compared to ZnSO4. H20, Zn(HMTBa)2 improved feed intake (12 %; P 〈 0.001) and weight gain (12 %, P 〈 0.001) and the benefits were more pronounced in the presence of 250 mg/kg diet Cu. Experiment 2 was a dose titration of ZnSO4- H20 and Zn(HMTBa)2 at 30, 4,5, 60, and 75 mg/kg diet in the presence of 250 mg/kg CuSO4. Feed:gain was decreased and tibia Zn was increased with increasing Zn levels from 30 to 75 mg/kg. Birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2 consumed more food and gained more weight compared to birds fed ZnSO4, especially at lower supplementation levels (30 and 45 mg/kg; interaction P 〈 0,05). Experiment 3 compared two organic Zn sources (Zn(HMTBa)2 vs. Zn-Methionine) at 30 mg/kg with or without 250 mg/kg CuSO4. No interactions were observed between Zn sources and Cu levels on performance or tissue mineral concentrations. High dietary Cu decreased weight gain (P 〈 0.01). Tibia Cu and liver Cu were significantly increased with 250 mg/kg dietary Cu supplementation (P 〈 0.01). No difference was observed between the two Zn sources. Conclusions: Dietary 250 mg/kg Cu significantly impaired feed intake and weight gain in birds fed ZnSO4. H20, but had less impact in birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2. No difference was observed between the two organic zinc sources These results are consistent with the hypothesis that chelated organic Zn is better utilized than inorganic zinc in the presence of elevated Cu.展开更多

Identified AZM-resistant NTS isolates were further evaluated for their minimal inhibitory concentration by the E-test method.Results:NTS infections accounted for 17.3% (355/2052), including 11 serogroups and 50 different serotypes. The most prevalent serogroup wasSalmonella group C2-C3 (35.8%, 127/355) followed by groups B (21.1%, 75/355) and C1 (18.6%, 66/355). Identified serotypes includedSalmonellahadar (n=60),Salmonellarissen (n=45), andSalmonella blockley (n=34). Among the predominate serogroups, antimicrobial resistance was consistently high against TET (76.9%, 273/355) followed by STR (40.8%, 145/355). OneSalmonella senftenberg isolate demonstrated decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility. Increasing use on mountain summits has both social and ecological implications.High numbers of visitors climbing mountain summits can be a safety issue,particularly in areas where terrain or elevation leads to queuein...Increasing use on mountain summits has both social and ecological implications.High numbers of visitors climbing mountain summits can be a safety issue,particularly in areas where terrain or elevation leads to queueing that may cause time delays.Estimating visitor use levels at site specific locations en route to summits is needed to understand the potential benefits and impacts of visitor use in these locations.However,it can be difficult to obtain reliable and robust data to estimate use and develop statistical relationships because of the remote and harsh climates on mountain summits,as well as the financial and personnel requirements involved to collect the data in remote locations.In 2015,data were collected on the higher stretches of the Keyhole Route on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park,USA(RMNP)to better understand use levels near the summit and to explore potential statistical relationships to trailhead use data that are relatively easy to collect.Strong statistical relationships from robust regression analyses were found between trailhead use counts and daily and hourly use totals on the"Homestretch"which is a final section of the Keyhole Route.Additionally,a strong statistical relationship was found between total daily use and maximum hourly use on the Homestretch.The results suggest that trailhead counts are an accurate and reliable means from which to estimate use levels on upper portions of the Keyhole route.Moreover,this research demonstrates the usefulness of an approach using proxy variables to estimate visitor use along remote peaks where data collection can be difficult.These types of data can elucidate various options and decisions for park management teams who are charged with deciding if and how to manage high use areas.展开更多

Consequently, definitive diagnosis usually requires tissue acquisition and pathologic confirmation. Establishing a tissue diagnosis is difficult because the yield of forceps biopsies is low. However, prospective data evaluating tissue sampling techniques for subepithelial lesions are currently lacking. Objective: Our purpose was to prospectively determine the diagnostic yield of endoscopic submucosal-mucosal resection (ESMR) compared with forceps biopsy for lesions limited to the submucosa (third endosonographic layer) of the GI tract. Design: A prospective head-to-head comparison was performed. Setting: The study was performed in a tertiary care hospital. Patients: Study patients were 23 adults with subepithelial lesions limited to the submucosa. Intervention: All submucosal lesions underwent forceps biopsy followed by endoscopic submucosal resection. Biopsy speciments were obtained with large-capacity “jumbo" forceps. A total of 4 double passes (8 biopsy specimens) were collected from each lesion with use of the bite-on-bite technique. Endoscopic resection was then performed with an electrosurgical snare or cap-fitted endoscopic mucosal resection device. Main Outcome Measurement: The main outcome measurement was the diagnostic yield of biopsy forceps compared with endoscopic submucosal resection. Results: Twenty-three patients with lesions limited to the submucosa were identi-fied by endoscopic ultrasonography. All lesions underwent forceps biopsy followed by ESMR. The diagnostic yield of the jumbo forceps biopsy was 4 of 23 (17%), whereas the diagnostic yield of ESMR was 20 of 23 (87%) (P = .0001, McNemar test). Conclusion: In the evaluation of subepithelial lesions limited to the submucosa, ESMR has a significantly higher diagnostic yield than jumbo forceps biopsy with use of the bite-on-bite technique.展开更多

Background:Repeat endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR) to cure locally recurrent early gastric cancer(EGC) is difficult to perform because the initial EMR causes submucosal fibrosis;however,ESD allows submucosal dissecti...Background:Repeat endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR) to cure locally recurrent early gastric cancer(EGC) is difficult to perform because the initial EMR causes submucosal fibrosis;however,ESD allows submucosal dissection through the fibrosis and provides an en bloc specimen.Objective:The objective was to determine the safety and efficacy of ESD and compare the results to historical controls.Design:This was a retrospective,case-control study.Patients:We used our prospectively entered database(1993-2003) to identify 64 patients who had locally recurrent EGC after EMR.Main Outcome Measurements:We defined the resections as curative when the lateral and vertical margins were free of cancer and repeat endoscopy showed no recurrent disease.Results:Among 46 patients who underwent ESD,41(89.1%) en bloc resections were achieved compared to none in 18 conventional procedures(P<.0001) .The specimen of 1 lesion(2.4%) out of 41 en bloc resections was histologically nonevaluable,compared with 10 lesions(43.4%) in 23 piecemeal resections(P <.0001) .Three residual tumors(27.3%) were found in the 11 nonevaluable specimens.Three perforations occurred during ESD;all were successfully treated endoscopically with endoclips.Limitations:The limitation of the study was retrospective design.Conclusions:ESD provides high en bloc resection rate for locally recurrent EGC after previous EMR.In turn,en bloc resections allow precise histological staging to be assessed and prevent residual disease and recurrence.展开更多

Objective: To observe the response of microvessels to epinephrine stimulation in early gastric cancer tissues and to assess the usefulness of magnifying pharmacoendoscopy for histologic diagnosis. Design: This was a prospective pilot study. Setting: This study was conducted at an academic hospital. Patients: Twenty-nine patients with differentiated early gastric cancer were enrolled. Interventions: Microvessels in both the cancerous lesion and its adjacent non-neoplastic gastric mucosa were observed by magnifying endoscopy before and after focal spray with epinephrine solution (0.05 mg/mL).Main Outcome Measurements and Results: After epinephrine stimulation, noncancerous gastric mucosa surrounding the cancerous lesion showed a change in color from red to white; no microvessels were evident. On the other hand, all the cancerous lesions examined clearly showed enhancement of tumor microvessels. The rate of detection of tumor microvessels by magnifying pharmacoendoscopy (100%) was significantly higher than that by magnifying endoscopy alone (41.3%). Limitations: This was small pilot study. Conclusions: Magnifying pharmacoendoscopy with epinephrine is a powerful tool for assessing tumor vascularity and may contribute to the histologic diagnosis of differentiated early gastric cancers before endoscopic treatment.展开更多
Emerging evidence suggests an important role of vitamin D in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy,and the regulation of foetal growth across mammalian species.However,the temporal changes in maternal vitamin...Emerging evidence suggests an important role of vitamin D in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy,and the regulation of foetal growth across mammalian species.However,the temporal changes in maternal vitamin D sta-tus throughout gestation in the pig and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and litter characteristics of interest across gestation remain poorly understood and under-investigated.The abundance of 25(OH)D in maternal plasma was quantified by HPLC–MS/MS at gestational days(GD)18,30,45,60 and 90(n=5–11 gilts/GD).Maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations significantly increased between GD18 and GD30(P<0.05).The relationship between maternal vitamin D metabolite concentrations and litter characteristics of interest including gilt weight,ovulation rate,mean litter weight,number of live foetuses,percentage prenatal survival,and sex ratio of the litter was assessed.Maternal 25(OH)D(P=0.059)concentrations tended to be positively associated with percentage prenatal survival on GD60.On GD90,maternal 25(OH)D(P<0.05)concentrations were inversely associated with gilt weight.Maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with the percentage of male foetuses in the litter on GD90(P<0.05).This study has provided novel insights into temporal changes in maternal vitamin D status throughout ges-tation and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and the economically important litter characteristics of gilt weight,percentage prenatal survival and percentage of male foetuses in the litter.Improving the understanding of the role of vitamin D across important developmental timepoints in relation to foetal growth is essential to improve reproductive success in livestock species.展开更多
Annual rings from 30 year old vines in a California rootstock trial were measured to determine the effects of 15 different rootstocks on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon scions.Viticultural traits measuring vegetativ...Annual rings from 30 year old vines in a California rootstock trial were measured to determine the effects of 15 different rootstocks on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon scions.Viticultural traits measuring vegetative growth,yield,berry quality,and nutrient uptake were collected at the beginning(1995 to 1999)and end(2017 to 2020)of the lifetime of a vineyard initially planted in 1991 and removed in 2021.X-ray Computed Tomography(CT)was used to measure ring widths in 103 vines.Ring width was modeled as a function of ring number using a negative exponential model.Early and late wood ring widths,cambium width,and scion trunk radius were correlated with 27 traits.Modeling of annual ring width shows that scions alter the width of the first rings but that rootstocks alter the decay of later rings,consistently shortening ring width throughout the lifetime of the vine.Ravaz index,juice pH,photosynthetic assimilation and transpiration rates,and instantaneous water use efficiency are correlated with scion trunk radius.Ultimately,our research indicates that rootstocks modulate secondary growth over years,altering physiology and agronomic traits.Rootstocks act in similar but distinct ways from climate to modulate ring width,which borrowing techniques from dendrochronology,can be used to monitor both genetic and environmental effects in woody perennial crop species.展开更多

O...Background: Interventional EUS-guided cholangiography (IEUC) has been increasingly used as an alternative to percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) in cases of biliary obstruction when ERCP is unsuccessful. Objective: We reviewed our experience and technique used for this procedure. Design: Over a 3-year period, ending July 2005, patients with a failed ERCP were offered an IEUC. Setting: Tertiary care center offering ERCP and interventional EUS. Patients: Twenty-eight patients were candidates for IEUC. Two patients had bleeding masses and were referred to interventional radiology, 1 patient had a large mass occupying the duodenal lumen, and 2 patients refused IEUC. Intervention: EUS was used to access the biliary system after which a guidewire was advanced antegrade across the obstruction. Either rendezvous with retrograde or antegrade drainage was then accomplished. Main Outcome Measurements: Efficacy and safety of IEUC for biliary decompression. Results: IEUC was successfully performed in 23 patients, with a transgastric-transhepatic (intrahepatic) approach in 13 cases and transenteric-transcholedochal (extrahepatic) approach in 10 cases. Therapeutic benefit was achieved in 21 patients: 18 underwent successful stent deployment across the stricture, whereas 3 patients required a choledochoenteric fistula formation. Complications included 1 case of bile leak, 2 cases of self-limited pneumoperitoneum, and 1 case of minor bleeding. Limitations: Single-center experience of 2 operators. Conclusions: IEUC appears efficacious in patients in whom ERCP is unsuccessful and is evolving as an attractive alternative to PTC. Intrahepatic access to the biliary system appears safer than the extrahepatic approach.展开更多

One problem with this method is that the lesion cannot always be maintained in the center of the cap because the procedure is performed blindly after aspiration. Objective: We developed a 2-channel prelooped hood that facilitates EMRC while simultaneously allowing both grip of the center in the lesion and irrigation of the aspiration site and evaluated the usefulness of this end hood for early gastric cancer. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Between August 2003 and October 2004, patients underwent our novel EMR. Patients: Twelve cases of early gastric cancer. Interventions: Two side holes were fabricated by drilling in the cap portion of a conventional soft prelooped hood, and then the irrigation tube and the accessory channel tube were glued to the exterior surface of the holes. We placed the fabricated transparent hood at the tip of the endoscope and performed grasping forceps-assisted endoscopic aspiration mucosectomy. Main Outcome Measurements: Accurate aspiration and the rate of en bloc resection. Results: We obtained a satisfactory field of view and accurate aspiration in the center of the tumor in all lesions. The rate of en bloc resection was 91.7%(11/12). Limitations: Gastric intramucosal cancer. Conclusion: Grasping forceps-assisted endoscopic mucosal resection with a novel 2-channel prelooped hood is safe and useful for mucosal resection of intramucosal cancers less than 20 mm and may help center the lesion in the cap before resection.展开更多
Background:Current protein biomarkers are only moderately predictive at identifying individuals with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.Therefore,more accurate diagnostic markers are needed for sport-related co...Background:Current protein biomarkers are only moderately predictive at identifying individuals with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.Therefore,more accurate diagnostic markers are needed for sport-related concussion.Methods:This was a multicenter,prospective,case-control study of athletes who provided blood samples and were diagnosed with a concussion or were a matched non-concussed control within the National Collegiate Athletic Association-Department of Defense Concussion Assessment,Research,and Education Consortium conducted between 2015 and 2019.The blood was collected within 48 h of injury to identify protein abnormalities at the acute and subacute timepoints.Athletes with concussion were divided into 6 h post-injury(0-6 h post-injury)and after 6 h postinjury(7-48 h post-injury)groups.We applied a highly multiplexed proteomic technique that used a DNA aptamers assay to target 1305proteins in plasma samples from athletes with and without sport-related concussion.Results:A total of 140 athletes with concussion(79.3%males;aged 18.71±1.10 years,mean±SD)and 21 non-concussed athletes(76.2%males;19.14±1.10 years)were included in this study.We identified 338 plasma proteins that significantly differed in abundance(319 upregulated and 19 downregulated)in concussed athletes compared to non-concussed athletes.The top 20 most differentially abundant proteins discriminated concussed athletes from non-concussed athletes with an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.954(95%confidence interval:0.922-0.986).Specifically,after 6 h of injury,the individual AUC of plasma erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1(EPB41)and alpha-synuclein(SNCA)were 0.956 and 0.875,respectively.The combination of EPB41 and SNCA provided the best AUC(1.000),which suggests this combination of candidate plasma biomarkers is the best for diagnosing concussion in athletes after 6 h of injury.Conclusion:Our data suggest that proteomic profiling may provide novel diagnostic protein markers and that a combination of EPB41 and SNCA is the most predictive biomarker of concussion after 6 h of injury.展开更多

Laser plasma accelerators(LPAs)enable the generation of intense and short proton bunches on a micrometre scale,thus offering new experimental capabilities to research fields such as ultra-high dose rate radiobiology o...Laser plasma accelerators(LPAs)enable the generation of intense and short proton bunches on a micrometre scale,thus offering new experimental capabilities to research fields such as ultra-high dose rate radiobiology or material analysis.Being spectrally broadband,laser-accelerated proton bunches allow for tailored volumetric dose deposition in a sample via single bunches to excite or probe specific sample properties.The rising number of such experiments indicates a need for diagnostics providing spatially resolved characterization of dose distributions with volumes of approximately 1 cm^(3) for single proton bunches to allow for fast online feedback.Here we present the scintillator-based miniSCIDOM detector for online single-bunch tomographic reconstruction of dose distributions in volumes of up to approximately 1 cm^(3).The detector achieves a spatial resolution below 500μm and a sensitivity of 100 mGy.The detector performance is tested at a proton therapy cyclotron and an LPA proton source.The experiments’primary focus is the characterization of the scintillator’s ionization quenching behaviour.展开更多
Understanding the physics of electromagnetic pulse(EMP) emission and nozzle damage is critical for the long-term operation of laser experiments with gas targets, particularly at facilities looking to produce stable so...Understanding the physics of electromagnetic pulse(EMP) emission and nozzle damage is critical for the long-term operation of laser experiments with gas targets, particularly at facilities looking to produce stable sources of radiation at high repetition rates. We present a theoretical model of plasma formation and electrostatic charging when high-power lasers are focused inside gases. The model can be used to estimate the amplitude of gigahertz EMPs produced by the laser and the extent of damage to the gas jet nozzle. Looking at a range of laser and target properties relevant to existing high-power laser systems, we find that EMP fields of tens to hundreds of kV/m can be generated several metres from the gas jet. Model predictions are compared with measurements of EMPs, plasma formation and nozzle damage from two experiments on the VEGA-3 laser and one experiment on the Vulcan Petawatt laser.展开更多
While resident innate immune cells of the central nervous system, the microglia, represent a cell population unique in origin, microenvironment, and longevity, they assume many properties displayed by peripheral macro...While resident innate immune cells of the central nervous system, the microglia, represent a cell population unique in origin, microenvironment, and longevity, they assume many properties displayed by peripheral macrophages. One prominent shared property is the ability to undergo a metabolic switch towards glycolysis and away from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) upon activation by the pro-inflammatory stimuli lipopolysaccharide. This shift serves to meet specific cellular demands and allows for cell survival, similar to the Warburg effect demonstrated in cancer cells. In contrast, normal surveillance phenotype or stimulation to a non-proinflammatory phenotype relies primarily on OXPHOS and fatty acid oxidation. Thus, mitochondria appear to function as a pivotal signaling platform linking energy metabolism and macrophage polarization upon activation. These unique shifts in cell bioenergetics in response to different stimuli are essential for proper effector responses at sites of infection, inflammation, or injury. Here, we present a summary of recent developments as to how these dynamics characterized in peripheral macrophages are displayed in microglia. The new insights provided by an increased understanding of metabolic reprogramming in macrophages may allow for translation to the central nervous system and a better understanding of microglia heterogeneity, regulation, and function.展开更多
Objective:This study assesses the attitudes and preferences of Chinese clinicians toward their involvement in shared decision making(SDM).Methods:From May 2014 to May 2015,200 Chinese clinicians from two hospitals wer...Objective:This study assesses the attitudes and preferences of Chinese clinicians toward their involvement in shared decision making(SDM).Methods:From May 2014 to May 2015,200 Chinese clinicians from two hospitals were enrolled to complete a survey on their attitude towards SDM.We conducted the survey via face-to-face interviews before and after an educational intervention on SDM among young Chinese clinicians.The clinicians were asked to give the extent of agreement to SDM.They also gave the extent of difficulty in using decision aids(DAs)during the SDM process.The variation in the range of responses to each question before and after the SDM intervention was recorded.The frequency of changed responses was analyzed by using JMP 6.0 software.Data were statistically analyzed using Chi-square and Mann—Whitney U tests,as appropriate to the data type.Multiple logistic regressions were used to test for those factors significantly and independently associated with preference for an approach for each scenario.Results:Of the 200 young Chinese clinicians sampled,59.0%indicated a preference for SDM and a desire to participate in SDM before receiving education or seeing the DA,and this number increased to 69.0%after seeing the DA with the sample video of the SDM process on Statin Choice.However,28.5%of the respondents still reported that,in their current practice,they make clinical decisions on behalf of their patients.The clinicians who denied a desire to use the DA stated that the main barriers to implement SDM or DA use in China are lack of time and knowledge of SDM.展开更多
We report on the design and first results from experiments looking at the formation of radiative shocks on the ShenguangII(SG-II)laser at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics in China.Laser-heating of a...We report on the design and first results from experiments looking at the formation of radiative shocks on the ShenguangII(SG-II)laser at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics in China.Laser-heating of a two-layer CH/CH–Br foil drives a∼40 km/s shock inside a gas cell filled with argon at an initial pressure of 1 bar.The use of gas-cell targets with large(several millimetres)lateral and axial extent allows the shock to propagate freely without any wall interactions,and permits a large field of view to image single and colliding counter-propagating shocks with time-resolved,pointprojection X-ray backlighting(∼20µm source size,4.3 keV photon energy).Single shocks were imaged up to 100 ns after the onset of the laser drive,allowing to probe the growth of spatial nonuniformities in the shock apex.These results are compared with experiments looking at counter-propagating shocks,showing a symmetric drive that leads to a collision and stagnation from∼40 ns onward.We present a preliminary comparison with numerical simulations with the radiation hydrodynamics code ARWEN,which provides expected plasma parameters for the design of future experiments in this facility.展开更多

文摘The replacement of Li by Na in an analogue battery to the commercial Li-ion one appears a sustainable strategy to overcome the several concerns triggered by the increased demand for the electrochemical energy storage.However,the apparently simple change of the alkali metal represents a challenging step which requires notable and dedicated studies.Therefore,we investigate herein the features of a NaFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(NFMP)cathode with triphylite structure achieved from the conversion of a LiFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(LFMP)olivine for application in Na-ion battery.The work initially characterizes the structure,morphology and performances in sodium cell of NFMP,achieving a maximum capacity exceeding 100 mAh g^(−1)at a temperature of 55℃,adequate rate capability,and suitable retention confirmed by ex-situ measurements.Subsequently,the study compares in parallel key parameters of the NFMP and LFMP such as Na^(+)/Li^(+)ions diffusion,interfacial characteristics,and reaction mechanism in Na/Li cells using various electrochemical techniques.The data reveal that relatively limited modifications of NFMP chemistry,structure and morphology compared to LFMP greatly impact the reaction mechanism,kinetics and electrochemical features.These changes are ascribed to the different physical and chemical features of the two compounds,the slower mobility of Na^(+)with respect to Li^(+),and a more resistive electrode/electrolyte interphase of sodium compared with lithium.Relevantly,the study reveals analogue trends of the charge transfer resistance and the ion diffusion coefficient in NFMP and LFMP during the electrochemical process in half-cell.Hence,the NFMP achieved herein is suggested as a possible candidate for application in a low-cost,efficient,and environmentally friendly Na-ion battery.
文摘Background: The goal of this study was to compare the antagonism of elevated dietary Cu (250 mg/kg) from CuS04 on three different Zn sources (ZnS04. H20; [Zn bis(-2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid)], Zn(HMTBa)2 a chelated Zn methionine hydroxy analogue; and Zn-Methionine), as measured using multiple indices of animal performance in ROSS 308 broilers. Methods: Three experiments were conducted in broiler chicks fed a semi-purified diet. All birds were fed a Zn-deficient diet (8.5 mg/kg diet) for 1 wk, and then provided with the experimental diets for 2 wks. Results: Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial design with two levels of Cu (8 vs. 250 mg/kg diet from CuSO4) and two Zn sources at 30 mg/kg [ZnSO4. H20 vs. Zn(HMTBa)2]. Elevated Cu impaired growth performance only in birds fed ZnSO4. Compared to ZnSO4. H20, Zn(HMTBa)2 improved feed intake (12 %; P 〈 0.001) and weight gain (12 %, P 〈 0.001) and the benefits were more pronounced in the presence of 250 mg/kg diet Cu. Experiment 2 was a dose titration of ZnSO4- H20 and Zn(HMTBa)2 at 30, 4,5, 60, and 75 mg/kg diet in the presence of 250 mg/kg CuSO4. Feed:gain was decreased and tibia Zn was increased with increasing Zn levels from 30 to 75 mg/kg. Birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2 consumed more food and gained more weight compared to birds fed ZnSO4, especially at lower supplementation levels (30 and 45 mg/kg; interaction P 〈 0,05). Experiment 3 compared two organic Zn sources (Zn(HMTBa)2 vs. Zn-Methionine) at 30 mg/kg with or without 250 mg/kg CuSO4. No interactions were observed between Zn sources and Cu levels on performance or tissue mineral concentrations. High dietary Cu decreased weight gain (P 〈 0.01). Tibia Cu and liver Cu were significantly increased with 250 mg/kg dietary Cu supplementation (P 〈 0.01). No difference was observed between the two Zn sources. Conclusions: Dietary 250 mg/kg Cu significantly impaired feed intake and weight gain in birds fed ZnSO4. H20, but had less impact in birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2. No difference was observed between the two organic zinc sources These results are consistent with the hypothesis that chelated organic Zn is better utilized than inorganic zinc in the presence of elevated Cu.

文摘Objective:To describe the spanning 25 years data for the occurrence, magnitude, and trends regarding antimicrobial resistance of non-typhoidalSalmonella (NTS) isolated from non-immune travelers to Thailand participating in joint military operations.Methods:A total of 355 NTS isolates, obtained from 2052 fecal samples from US soldiers deployed for military maneuvers in Thailand during 1988-2013, were examined for NTS serogroup/serotypes and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by disk diffusion to these 10 antibiotics:ampicillin, azithromycin (AZM), ciprofloxacin, colistin, gentamicin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin (STR), tetracycline (TET), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Identified AZM-resistant NTS isolates were further evaluated for their minimal inhibitory concentration by the E-test method.Results:NTS infections accounted for 17.3% (355/2052), including 11 serogroups and 50 different serotypes. The most prevalent serogroup wasSalmonella group C2-C3 (35.8%, 127/355) followed by groups B (21.1%, 75/355) and C1 (18.6%, 66/355). Identified serotypes includedSalmonellahadar (n=60),Salmonellarissen (n=45), andSalmonella blockley (n=34). Among the predominate serogroups, antimicrobial resistance was consistently high against TET (76.9%, 273/355) followed by STR (40.8%, 145/355). OneSalmonella senftenberg isolate demonstrated decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility. Most isolates (94.6%) were resistant to one or more antimicrobials, and the most common multidrug resistance was TET-STR-nalidixic acid (11.5%, 41/355).Conclusions:The prevalence of NTS serotypes and the growing magnitude of antibiotic resistant bacteria isolated from deployed US military in Thailand are documented from 1988-2013. This study demonstrates the antibiotic resistance profiles, highlighting the effectiveness of AZM that is a first-line treatment for travelers to Southeast Asia. AZM-resistant NTS isolates are periodically observed over a 25-year period. Hence, the ongoing surveillance and prevalence efforts are required to monitor NTS resistant strains causing further treatment failure.

文摘Increasing use on mountain summits has both social and ecological implications.High numbers of visitors climbing mountain summits can be a safety issue,particularly in areas where terrain or elevation leads to queueing that may cause time delays.Estimating visitor use levels at site specific locations en route to summits is needed to understand the potential benefits and impacts of visitor use in these locations.However,it can be difficult to obtain reliable and robust data to estimate use and develop statistical relationships because of the remote and harsh climates on mountain summits,as well as the financial and personnel requirements involved to collect the data in remote locations.In 2015,data were collected on the higher stretches of the Keyhole Route on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park,USA(RMNP)to better understand use levels near the summit and to explore potential statistical relationships to trailhead use data that are relatively easy to collect.Strong statistical relationships from robust regression analyses were found between trailhead use counts and daily and hourly use totals on the"Homestretch"which is a final section of the Keyhole Route.Additionally,a strong statistical relationship was found between total daily use and maximum hourly use on the Homestretch.The results suggest that trailhead counts are an accurate and reliable means from which to estimate use levels on upper portions of the Keyhole route.Moreover,this research demonstrates the usefulness of an approach using proxy variables to estimate visitor use along remote peaks where data collection can be difficult.These types of data can elucidate various options and decisions for park management teams who are charged with deciding if and how to manage high use areas.
文摘Background: In most circumstances, subepithelial tumors lack distinct endoscopic and ultrasonographic features. Consequently, definitive diagnosis usually requires tissue acquisition and pathologic confirmation. Establishing a tissue diagnosis is difficult because the yield of forceps biopsies is low. However, prospective data evaluating tissue sampling techniques for subepithelial lesions are currently lacking. Objective: Our purpose was to prospectively determine the diagnostic yield of endoscopic submucosal-mucosal resection (ESMR) compared with forceps biopsy for lesions limited to the submucosa (third endosonographic layer) of the GI tract. Design: A prospective head-to-head comparison was performed. Setting: The study was performed in a tertiary care hospital. Patients: Study patients were 23 adults with subepithelial lesions limited to the submucosa. Intervention: All submucosal lesions underwent forceps biopsy followed by endoscopic submucosal resection. Biopsy speciments were obtained with large-capacity “jumbo" forceps. A total of 4 double passes (8 biopsy specimens) were collected from each lesion with use of the bite-on-bite technique. Endoscopic resection was then performed with an electrosurgical snare or cap-fitted endoscopic mucosal resection device. Main Outcome Measurement: The main outcome measurement was the diagnostic yield of biopsy forceps compared with endoscopic submucosal resection. Results: Twenty-three patients with lesions limited to the submucosa were identi-fied by endoscopic ultrasonography. All lesions underwent forceps biopsy followed by ESMR. The diagnostic yield of the jumbo forceps biopsy was 4 of 23 (17%), whereas the diagnostic yield of ESMR was 20 of 23 (87%) (P = .0001, McNemar test). Conclusion: In the evaluation of subepithelial lesions limited to the submucosa, ESMR has a significantly higher diagnostic yield than jumbo forceps biopsy with use of the bite-on-bite technique.

文摘The cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system is a demonstration device capable of generating high-power millimeter electromagnetic waves of a specific wavelength and observing their effects on living organisms.It irradiates a biological sample placed in a 30×30×50 cm^(3)cell with electromagnetic waves in the 3.15-mm-wavelength region(with an output of≥1 W)and analyzes the temperature change of the sample.A vacuum electronic device-based coupled-cavity backward-wave oscillator converts the electron energy of the electron beam into radiofrequency(RF)energy and radiates it to the target through an antenna,increasing the temperature through the absorption of RF energy in the skin.The system causes pain and ultimately reduces combat power.A cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system consisting of four parts—an electromagnetic-wave generator,a highvoltage power supply,a test cell,and a system controller—generates an RF signal of≥1 W in a continuous waveform at a 95-GHz center frequency,as well as a chemical solution with a dielectric constant similar to that of the skin of a living organism.An increase of 5°C lasting approximately 10 s was confirmed through an experiment.
文摘Background:Repeat endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR) to cure locally recurrent early gastric cancer(EGC) is difficult to perform because the initial EMR causes submucosal fibrosis;however,ESD allows submucosal dissection through the fibrosis and provides an en bloc specimen.Objective:The objective was to determine the safety and efficacy of ESD and compare the results to historical controls.Design:This was a retrospective,case-control study.Patients:We used our prospectively entered database(1993-2003) to identify 64 patients who had locally recurrent EGC after EMR.Main Outcome Measurements:We defined the resections as curative when the lateral and vertical margins were free of cancer and repeat endoscopy showed no recurrent disease.Results:Among 46 patients who underwent ESD,41(89.1%) en bloc resections were achieved compared to none in 18 conventional procedures(P<.0001) .The specimen of 1 lesion(2.4%) out of 41 en bloc resections was histologically nonevaluable,compared with 10 lesions(43.4%) in 23 piecemeal resections(P <.0001) .Three residual tumors(27.3%) were found in the 11 nonevaluable specimens.Three perforations occurred during ESD;all were successfully treated endoscopically with endoclips.Limitations:The limitation of the study was retrospective design.Conclusions:ESD provides high en bloc resection rate for locally recurrent EGC after previous EMR.In turn,en bloc resections allow precise histological staging to be assessed and prevent residual disease and recurrence.
文摘Background: Magnifying endoscopy is a promising modality for fine observation of minute surface structures and microvessel architecture in gastric lesions. Objective: To observe the response of microvessels to epinephrine stimulation in early gastric cancer tissues and to assess the usefulness of magnifying pharmacoendoscopy for histologic diagnosis. Design: This was a prospective pilot study. Setting: This study was conducted at an academic hospital. Patients: Twenty-nine patients with differentiated early gastric cancer were enrolled. Interventions: Microvessels in both the cancerous lesion and its adjacent non-neoplastic gastric mucosa were observed by magnifying endoscopy before and after focal spray with epinephrine solution (0.05 mg/mL).Main Outcome Measurements and Results: After epinephrine stimulation, noncancerous gastric mucosa surrounding the cancerous lesion showed a change in color from red to white; no microvessels were evident. On the other hand, all the cancerous lesions examined clearly showed enhancement of tumor microvessels. The rate of detection of tumor microvessels by magnifying pharmacoendoscopy (100%) was significantly higher than that by magnifying endoscopy alone (41.3%). Limitations: This was small pilot study. Conclusions: Magnifying pharmacoendoscopy with epinephrine is a powerful tool for assessing tumor vascularity and may contribute to the histologic diagnosis of differentiated early gastric cancers before endoscopic treatment.

文摘Emerging evidence suggests an important role of vitamin D in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy,and the regulation of foetal growth across mammalian species.However,the temporal changes in maternal vitamin D sta-tus throughout gestation in the pig and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and litter characteristics of interest across gestation remain poorly understood and under-investigated.The abundance of 25(OH)D in maternal plasma was quantified by HPLC–MS/MS at gestational days(GD)18,30,45,60 and 90(n=5–11 gilts/GD).Maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations significantly increased between GD18 and GD30(P<0.05).The relationship between maternal vitamin D metabolite concentrations and litter characteristics of interest including gilt weight,ovulation rate,mean litter weight,number of live foetuses,percentage prenatal survival,and sex ratio of the litter was assessed.Maternal 25(OH)D(P=0.059)concentrations tended to be positively associated with percentage prenatal survival on GD60.On GD90,maternal 25(OH)D(P<0.05)concentrations were inversely associated with gilt weight.Maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with the percentage of male foetuses in the litter on GD90(P<0.05).This study has provided novel insights into temporal changes in maternal vitamin D status throughout ges-tation and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and the economically important litter characteristics of gilt weight,percentage prenatal survival and percentage of male foetuses in the litter.Improving the understanding of the role of vitamin D across important developmental timepoints in relation to foetal growth is essential to improve reproductive success in livestock species.
文摘Annual rings from 30 year old vines in a California rootstock trial were measured to determine the effects of 15 different rootstocks on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon scions.Viticultural traits measuring vegetative growth,yield,berry quality,and nutrient uptake were collected at the beginning(1995 to 1999)and end(2017 to 2020)of the lifetime of a vineyard initially planted in 1991 and removed in 2021.X-ray Computed Tomography(CT)was used to measure ring widths in 103 vines.Ring width was modeled as a function of ring number using a negative exponential model.Early and late wood ring widths,cambium width,and scion trunk radius were correlated with 27 traits.Modeling of annual ring width shows that scions alter the width of the first rings but that rootstocks alter the decay of later rings,consistently shortening ring width throughout the lifetime of the vine.Ravaz index,juice pH,photosynthetic assimilation and transpiration rates,and instantaneous water use efficiency are correlated with scion trunk radius.Ultimately,our research indicates that rootstocks modulate secondary growth over years,altering physiology and agronomic traits.Rootstocks act in similar but distinct ways from climate to modulate ring width,which borrowing techniques from dendrochronology,can be used to monitor both genetic and environmental effects in woody perennial crop species.
文摘Background: Interventional EUS-guided cholangiography (IEUC) has been increasingly used as an alternative to percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) in cases of biliary obstruction when ERCP is unsuccessful. Objective: We reviewed our experience and technique used for this procedure. Design: Over a 3-year period, ending July 2005, patients with a failed ERCP were offered an IEUC. Setting: Tertiary care center offering ERCP and interventional EUS. Patients: Twenty-eight patients were candidates for IEUC. Two patients had bleeding masses and were referred to interventional radiology, 1 patient had a large mass occupying the duodenal lumen, and 2 patients refused IEUC. Intervention: EUS was used to access the biliary system after which a guidewire was advanced antegrade across the obstruction. Either rendezvous with retrograde or antegrade drainage was then accomplished. Main Outcome Measurements: Efficacy and safety of IEUC for biliary decompression. Results: IEUC was successfully performed in 23 patients, with a transgastric-transhepatic (intrahepatic) approach in 13 cases and transenteric-transcholedochal (extrahepatic) approach in 10 cases. Therapeutic benefit was achieved in 21 patients: 18 underwent successful stent deployment across the stricture, whereas 3 patients required a choledochoenteric fistula formation. Complications included 1 case of bile leak, 2 cases of self-limited pneumoperitoneum, and 1 case of minor bleeding. Limitations: Single-center experience of 2 operators. Conclusions: IEUC appears efficacious in patients in whom ERCP is unsuccessful and is evolving as an attractive alternative to PTC. Intrahepatic access to the biliary system appears safer than the extrahepatic approach.
文摘Background: Endoscopic mucosal resection with a cap-fitted panendoscope (EMRC) such as a soft prelooped hood is a useful, effective, and safe technique. One problem with this method is that the lesion cannot always be maintained in the center of the cap because the procedure is performed blindly after aspiration. Objective: We developed a 2-channel prelooped hood that facilitates EMRC while simultaneously allowing both grip of the center in the lesion and irrigation of the aspiration site and evaluated the usefulness of this end hood for early gastric cancer. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Between August 2003 and October 2004, patients underwent our novel EMR. Patients: Twelve cases of early gastric cancer. Interventions: Two side holes were fabricated by drilling in the cap portion of a conventional soft prelooped hood, and then the irrigation tube and the accessory channel tube were glued to the exterior surface of the holes. We placed the fabricated transparent hood at the tip of the endoscope and performed grasping forceps-assisted endoscopic aspiration mucosectomy. Main Outcome Measurements: Accurate aspiration and the rate of en bloc resection. Results: We obtained a satisfactory field of view and accurate aspiration in the center of the tumor in all lesions. The rate of en bloc resection was 91.7%(11/12). Limitations: Gastric intramucosal cancer. Conclusion: Grasping forceps-assisted endoscopic mucosal resection with a novel 2-channel prelooped hood is safe and useful for mucosal resection of intramucosal cancers less than 20 mm and may help center the lesion in the cap before resection.

文摘Background:Current protein biomarkers are only moderately predictive at identifying individuals with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.Therefore,more accurate diagnostic markers are needed for sport-related concussion.Methods:This was a multicenter,prospective,case-control study of athletes who provided blood samples and were diagnosed with a concussion or were a matched non-concussed control within the National Collegiate Athletic Association-Department of Defense Concussion Assessment,Research,and Education Consortium conducted between 2015 and 2019.The blood was collected within 48 h of injury to identify protein abnormalities at the acute and subacute timepoints.Athletes with concussion were divided into 6 h post-injury(0-6 h post-injury)and after 6 h postinjury(7-48 h post-injury)groups.We applied a highly multiplexed proteomic technique that used a DNA aptamers assay to target 1305proteins in plasma samples from athletes with and without sport-related concussion.Results:A total of 140 athletes with concussion(79.3%males;aged 18.71±1.10 years,mean±SD)and 21 non-concussed athletes(76.2%males;19.14±1.10 years)were included in this study.We identified 338 plasma proteins that significantly differed in abundance(319 upregulated and 19 downregulated)in concussed athletes compared to non-concussed athletes.The top 20 most differentially abundant proteins discriminated concussed athletes from non-concussed athletes with an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.954(95%confidence interval:0.922-0.986).Specifically,after 6 h of injury,the individual AUC of plasma erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1(EPB41)and alpha-synuclein(SNCA)were 0.956 and 0.875,respectively.The combination of EPB41 and SNCA provided the best AUC(1.000),which suggests this combination of candidate plasma biomarkers is the best for diagnosing concussion in athletes after 6 h of injury.Conclusion:Our data suggest that proteomic profiling may provide novel diagnostic protein markers and that a combination of EPB41 and SNCA is the most predictive biomarker of concussion after 6 h of injury.
文摘A new species of Scleroderma is described from temperate Oak forest of Phulchoki hill,at the highest peak(2,762 m)ringing the Kathmandu valley,Nepal.Smooth to velvety,pseudostipitate basidiome,smaller and sub-reticulate basidiospores in comparison to its close relatives,are key diagnostic features of this newly discovered mushroom.The novelty of the taxon was also confirmed based on phylogenetic analysis using the data sets of the internal transcribed spacer region(ITS)of nuclear rDNA sequences along with the analysis of scanning electron micrographs of its basidiospores.A comprehensive description,illustrations,and comparisons with phenetically similar species are provided in this study.Additional surveys are needed to verify the species diversity and clarify their geographic distribution.

文摘Laser plasma accelerators(LPAs)enable the generation of intense and short proton bunches on a micrometre scale,thus offering new experimental capabilities to research fields such as ultra-high dose rate radiobiology or material analysis.Being spectrally broadband,laser-accelerated proton bunches allow for tailored volumetric dose deposition in a sample via single bunches to excite or probe specific sample properties.The rising number of such experiments indicates a need for diagnostics providing spatially resolved characterization of dose distributions with volumes of approximately 1 cm^(3) for single proton bunches to allow for fast online feedback.Here we present the scintillator-based miniSCIDOM detector for online single-bunch tomographic reconstruction of dose distributions in volumes of up to approximately 1 cm^(3).The detector achieves a spatial resolution below 500μm and a sensitivity of 100 mGy.The detector performance is tested at a proton therapy cyclotron and an LPA proton source.The experiments’primary focus is the characterization of the scintillator’s ionization quenching behaviour.

文摘Understanding the physics of electromagnetic pulse(EMP) emission and nozzle damage is critical for the long-term operation of laser experiments with gas targets, particularly at facilities looking to produce stable sources of radiation at high repetition rates. We present a theoretical model of plasma formation and electrostatic charging when high-power lasers are focused inside gases. The model can be used to estimate the amplitude of gigahertz EMPs produced by the laser and the extent of damage to the gas jet nozzle. Looking at a range of laser and target properties relevant to existing high-power laser systems, we find that EMP fields of tens to hundreds of kV/m can be generated several metres from the gas jet. Model predictions are compared with measurements of EMPs, plasma formation and nozzle damage from two experiments on the VEGA-3 laser and one experiment on the Vulcan Petawatt laser.

文摘While resident innate immune cells of the central nervous system, the microglia, represent a cell population unique in origin, microenvironment, and longevity, they assume many properties displayed by peripheral macrophages. One prominent shared property is the ability to undergo a metabolic switch towards glycolysis and away from oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) upon activation by the pro-inflammatory stimuli lipopolysaccharide. This shift serves to meet specific cellular demands and allows for cell survival, similar to the Warburg effect demonstrated in cancer cells. In contrast, normal surveillance phenotype or stimulation to a non-proinflammatory phenotype relies primarily on OXPHOS and fatty acid oxidation. Thus, mitochondria appear to function as a pivotal signaling platform linking energy metabolism and macrophage polarization upon activation. These unique shifts in cell bioenergetics in response to different stimuli are essential for proper effector responses at sites of infection, inflammation, or injury. Here, we present a summary of recent developments as to how these dynamics characterized in peripheral macrophages are displayed in microglia. The new insights provided by an increased understanding of metabolic reprogramming in macrophages may allow for translation to the central nervous system and a better understanding of microglia heterogeneity, regulation, and function.

文摘Objective:This study assesses the attitudes and preferences of Chinese clinicians toward their involvement in shared decision making(SDM).Methods:From May 2014 to May 2015,200 Chinese clinicians from two hospitals were enrolled to complete a survey on their attitude towards SDM.We conducted the survey via face-to-face interviews before and after an educational intervention on SDM among young Chinese clinicians.The clinicians were asked to give the extent of agreement to SDM.They also gave the extent of difficulty in using decision aids(DAs)during the SDM process.The variation in the range of responses to each question before and after the SDM intervention was recorded.The frequency of changed responses was analyzed by using JMP 6.0 software.Data were statistically analyzed using Chi-square and Mann—Whitney U tests,as appropriate to the data type.Multiple logistic regressions were used to test for those factors significantly and independently associated with preference for an approach for each scenario.Results:Of the 200 young Chinese clinicians sampled,59.0%indicated a preference for SDM and a desire to participate in SDM before receiving education or seeing the DA,and this number increased to 69.0%after seeing the DA with the sample video of the SDM process on Statin Choice.However,28.5%of the respondents still reported that,in their current practice,they make clinical decisions on behalf of their patients.The clinicians who denied a desire to use the DA stated that the main barriers to implement SDM or DA use in China are lack of time and knowledge of SDM.

文摘We report on the design and first results from experiments looking at the formation of radiative shocks on the ShenguangII(SG-II)laser at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics in China.Laser-heating of a two-layer CH/CH–Br foil drives a∼40 km/s shock inside a gas cell filled with argon at an initial pressure of 1 bar.The use of gas-cell targets with large(several millimetres)lateral and axial extent allows the shock to propagate freely without any wall interactions,and permits a large field of view to image single and colliding counter-propagating shocks with time-resolved,pointprojection X-ray backlighting(∼20µm source size,4.3 keV photon energy).Single shocks were imaged up to 100 ns after the onset of the laser drive,allowing to probe the growth of spatial nonuniformities in the shock apex.These results are compared with experiments looking at counter-propagating shocks,showing a symmetric drive that leads to a collision and stagnation from∼40 ns onward.We present a preliminary comparison with numerical simulations with the radiation hydrodynamics code ARWEN,which provides expected plasma parameters for the design of future experiments in this facility.
