A goal of cancer therapy is to predict patient response and toxicity to drugs in order to facilitate the individualization of patient treatment. Identification of subgroups of patients that differ in their prognosis and response to treatment could help to identify the best available drug therapy according the genetic profile. Several mechanisms have been suggested to contribute to chemo-therapeutic drug resistance: amplification or overexpression of membrane transporters, changes in cellular proteins involved in detoxification or in DNA repair, apoptosis and activation of oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is regarded as intrinsically resistant to chemotherapy. Several molecular markers predictive of CRC therapy have been included during the last decade but their results in different studies complicate their application in practical clinical. The simultaneous testing of multiple markers predictive of response could help to identify more accurately the true role of these polymorphisms in CRC therapy. This review analyzes the role of genetic variants in genes involved in the action mechanisms of the drugs used at present in colorectal cancer.展开更多

Older adults with Type 2 diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus—DM) who also have cognitive impairment such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or early stage dementia are both challenged and at risk when attempting to live independently. The ability to effectively monitor blood glucose levels and diet and exercise regimens often is severely constrained by the combination of DM and the presence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or early stage dementia. We describe an exploratory study funded by the National Institute of Diabetes Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in which Certified Diabetic Educators (CDEs) were linked with 40 older adult with DM and cognitive impairment using iPads and the internet. CDEs presented personalized education sessions to participants, and 18 of the participants also received a cognitive intervention called Spaced Retrieval (SR), which is designed to train the effective use of strategies to enhance medication compliance and reach other goals. Blood glucose and cholesterol measures were assessed at baseline and at 2-, 4-, and 6-month post intervention. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels initially declined from baseline after treatment but returned to baseline levels after 6 months. For low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, a significant interaction effect was found for the Group × Time interaction. LDL levels increased from baseline after treatment for the control group, but showed decline after baseline in the SR group. Goals that were initially learned were retained, in general, at short-term follow-up, and self-efficacy increased significantly after training. Results show the need for follow-up and support after initial treatment, as well as the need to see if the effects produced by SR can be replicated and sustained with continued contact.展开更多

Wave focal patterns characterized by alongshore variations in wave height, wave angle, and breaking location induce alongshore non-uniformities of wave setup and nearshore circulation, e.g., rip currents and alongshore currents, in the surfzone. A simplified analytic model for nearshore circulation generated by focused/defocused waves on a planar beach is developed and theoretical solutions are obtained using transport stream function and perturbations in alongshore distributions of wave height and wave angle at the breaker line. The analytic model suggests that alongshore currents are strongly affected by a pair of counter-rotating vortices generated shoreward of the wave focal zone. The vortices are persistent, and their strengths depend on the amplitudes of alongshore variations in wave height and wave angle. The alongshore gradient in wave height tends to intensify the vortices while the convergence of wave angle tends to weaken the vortices. Divergent flows associated with the vortices in the surfzone are intense, strengthening alongshore currents in the downstream of the wave focal zone and weakening alongshore currents or causing flows reversal in the upstream. Alongshore currents are modulated by rip currents associated with the wave focusing/defocusing patterns.展开更多

文摘Support Vector Machine(SVM)has become one of the traditional machine learning algorithms the most used in prediction and classification tasks. However, its behavior strongly depends on some parameters, making tuning these parameters a sensitive step to maintain a good performance. On the other hand, and as any other classifier, the performance of SVM is also affected by the input set of features used to build the learning model, which makes the selection of relevant features an important task not only to preserve a good classification accuracy but also to reduce the dimensionality of datasets. In this paper, the MRFO+SVM algorithm is introduced by investigating the recent manta ray foraging optimizer to fine-tune the SVM parameters and identify the optimal feature subset simultaneously. The proposed approach is validated and compared with four SVM-based algorithms over eight benchmarking datasets.Additionally,it is applied to a disease Covid-19 dataset. The experimental results show the high ability of the proposed algorithm to find the appropriate SVM’s parameters, and its acceptable performance to deal with feature selection problem.
文摘The Middle Pennsylvanian,Langsettian sub-stage Clintwood coal, along with its correlatives, was one of the more important energy resources in eastern Kentucky. The coal thickens from the NE-SW-trending Belfry anticline in central Pike County to the southeast, towards the Virginia-Kentucky border.Much of the thickness increase is in the bright lithotypes below a dull lithology. The bright lithologies transition from a bright clarain+vitrain+fusain lithology to a clarain+fusain lithology to the southeast.Half of the lithotypes in the three analyzed sections exceed 1000-μg/g Rare earth elements+Y+Sc(REYSc)(ash basis). The La_(N)/Sm_(N)vs.Gd_(N)/Yb_(N)and La_(N)/Sm_(N)vs.Ce_(N)/Ce_(N)^(*)plots suggest that the top lithotype may have had best indication of an oxidizing environment.Positive Gd_(N)/Gd_(N)^(*)and EuN/EuN*in some of the lithologies suggests that there may have been a hydrothermal influence in the sediment sources and/or in the diagenesis of the coal.Consideration of La_(N)/Sm_(N)and Zr(μg/g;ash basis),Zr vs.Sr,and V/Cr vs.inertinite/(inertinite+vitrinite)indicates that the dull lithotypes existed in a distinct geochemical environment compared to the brighter lithotypes. The isolation of the dull lithotypes from the bright lithotypes is supported by principal components analysis on inertinite/(inertinite+vitrinite),LaN/SmN,V/Cr,Sr,and either Zr or Ln(100(TiO_(2))/Al_(2)O_(3)).

文摘This study presents a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the W UMa-type binary NR Cam,using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS)and ground-based observations. The light curves exhibit significant variable, with a negative correlation between the brightness of the two maxima—a characteristic of W UMa-type binaries typically attributed to magnetic activity. To explain this behavior,we incorporated a starspot model into our Wilson–Devinney analysis. Our results confirm that NR Cam is a W-subtype,moderately contact binary with a low mass ratio of q=5.75(±0.03)and a fill-out factor of f=33.4(±3.1)%.We also analyzed the orbital period variation using all available times of minima. The resulting O−C diagram reveals a long-term decreasing trend in the orbital period at a rate of dP/dt=−5.18(±0.02)×10^(-8) day yr^(-1),superimposed with a periodic oscillation characterized by an amplitude of A_(3)=0.0019(±0.0001)day and an oscillation period of P_(3)=7.776(±0.003)yr.The long-term decrease is likely due to mass transfer between the binary components, with an estimated mass transfer rate of dM_(2)/dt=1.33(±0.01)×10^(-8)M_(⊙)yr^(-1).The periodic oscillations are likely driven by the light-travel time effect caused by a tertiary companion, with a minimum mass of M_(3)=0.0956(1)M_(⊙)and a maximum separation of 3.841(6)au.Additionally,we considered the possibility that the periodic variation could result from changes in the gravitational quadrupole moment due to magnetic activity cycles,as described by the Applegate mechanism. Our findings confirm that NR Cam is an active binary system, where magnetic activity plays a significant role in its orbital evolution. These results contribute to our understanding of the magnetic dynamics and evolutionary processes in contact binary systems.
文摘Interindividual differences in the toxicity and response to anticancer therapies are currently observed in practically all available treatment regimens. This review analyzes the role of genetic variants in genes involved in the action mechanisms of the drugs used at present in colorectal cancer.

文摘Tonstein layers are found worldwide in the Permo-Carboniferous coal-bearing strata. This study investigates the geochronology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of four tonstein samples from the Permo-Carboniferous Benxi Formation,Ordos Basin,North China Craton(NCC).The typical features of the studied tonsteins include thin beds, lateral continuity, angular quartz grains, and euhedral zircons with similar U-Pb ages, indicating a significant pyroclastic origin. In addition, the tonstein samples have low TiO_(2)/Al_(2)O_(3)ratios(<0.02)and rare earth elements and yttrium(REY)concentrations with obvious negative Eu anomalies, indicating that the tonsteins have a felsic magma origin. Moreover, compared with the mean composition of clay shale, the studied tonsteins are characterized by high concentrations of the elements Nb and Ta,which may affect the concentration of the corresponding elements in surrounding coal seams. The zircon U-Pb ages of the tonsteins(293.9-298.8 Ma)provide a precise chronological framework on the Benxi Formation in the Ordos Basin, constraining the Gzhelian-Aselian stages. The tonsteins were probably sourced from arc volcanism along the western margin of the NCC during the early Permian, implying that the Alxa Terrane had not amalgamated with the NCC at that time.
文摘The primary objective of the study was to determine whether a distanced-based educational in-tervention would result in positive health outcomes for persons with both DM and cognitive impairment. Results show the need for follow-up and support after initial treatment, as well as the need to see if the effects produced by SR can be replicated and sustained with continued contact.

文摘Cobalt carbide has recently been reported to catalyse the FTO con version of syngas with high selectivity for the production of lower olefins (C2-C4). Clarifying the formation process and atomic structure of cobalt carbide will help understand the catalytic mechanism of FTO. Herein, hydrogenati on of carb on monoxide was investigated for cobalt carbide synthesized from CoMn catalyst, followed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, temperature programmed reaction and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. By monitoring the evolution of cobalt carbide during syngas conversion, the wavelet transform results give evidenee for the formation of the cobalt carbide and clearly demonstrate that the active site of catalysis was cobalt carbide.
文摘This study proposes a novel nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimizer based on the Reptile Search Algorithm combed with Salp Swarm Algorithm for image segmentation using gray-scale multi-level thresholding, called RSA-SSA.The proposed method introduces a better search space to find the optimal solution at each iteration. However,we proposed RSA-SSA to avoid the searching problem in the same area and determine the optimal multi-level thresholds. The obtained solutions by the proposed method are represented using the image histogram. The proposed RSA-SSA employed Otsu’s variance class function to get the best threshold values at each level. The performance measure for the proposed method is valid by detecting fitness function, structural similarity index, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and Friedman ranking test.Several benchmark images of COVID-19 validate the performance of the proposed RSA-SSA.The results showed that the proposed RSA-SSA outperformed other metaheuristics optimization algorithms published in the literature.
文摘In this work,we propose a real proportional-integral-derivative plus second-order derivative(PIDD2)controller as an efficient controller for vehicle cruise control systems to address the challenging issues related to efficient operation. In this regard, this paper is the first report in the literature demonstrating the implementation of a real PIDD2 controller for controlling the respective system. We construct a novel and efficient metaheuristic algorithm by improving the performance of the Aquila Optimizer via chaotic local search and modified opposition-based learning strategies and use it as an excellently performing tuning mechanism. We also propose a simple yet effective objective function to increase the performance of the proposed algorithm(CmOBL-AO)to adjust the real PIDD2 controller's parameters effectively. We show the CmOBL-AO algorithm to perform better than the differential evolution algorithm, gravitational search algorithm,African vultures optimization, and the Aquila Optimizer using well-known unimodal, multimodal benchmark functions.CEC2019 test suite is also used to perform ablation experiments to reveal the separate contributions of chaotic local search and modified opposition-based learning strategies to the CmOBL-AO algorithm. For the vehicle cruise control system,we confirm the more excellent performance of the proposed method against particle swarm, gray wolf, salp swarm, and original Aquila optimizers using statistical,Wilcoxon signed-rank,time response, robustness, and disturbance rejection analyses. We also use fourteen reported methods in the literature for the vehicle cruise control system to further verify the more promising performance of the CmOBL-AO-based real PIDD2 controller from a wider perspective. The excellent performance of the proposed method is also illustrated through different quality indicators and different operating speeds.Lastly,we also demonstrate the good performing capability of the CmOBL-AO algorithm for real traffic cases. We show the CmOBL-AO-based real PIDD2 controller as the most efficient method to control a vehicle cruise control system.
文摘The Firefly Algorithm(FA)is a highly efficient population-based optimization technique developed by mimicking the flashing behavior of fireflies when mating. This article proposes a method based on Differential Evolution(DE)/current-to-best/1 for enhancing the FA's movement process. The proposed modification increases the global search ability and the convergence rates while maintaining a balance between exploration and exploitation by deploying the global best solution. However, employing the best solution can lead to premature algorithm convergence, but this study handles this issue using a loop adjacent to the algorithm's main loop.Additionally, the suggested algorithm’s sensitivity to the alpha parameter is reduced compared to the original FA.The GbFA surpasses both the original and five-version of enhanced FAs in finding the optimal solution to 30 CEC2014 real parameter benchmark problems with all selected alpha values.Additionally, the CEC 2017 benchmark functions and the eight engineering optimization challenges are also utilized to evaluate GbFA’s efficacy and robustness on real-world problems against several enhanced algorithms. In all cases,GbFA provides the optimal result compared to other methods.Note that the source code of the GbFA algorithm is publicly available at https://www.optim-app.com/projects/gbfa.

文摘The cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system is a demonstration device capable of generating high-power millimeter electromagnetic waves of a specific wavelength and observing their effects on living organisms. It irradiates a biological sample placed in a 30×30×50 cm^(3)cell with electromagnetic waves in the 3.15-mm-wavelength region(with an output of≥1 W)and analyzes the temperature change of the sample.A vacuum electronic device-based coupled-cavity backward-wave oscillator converts the electron energy of the electron beam into radiofrequency(RF)energy and radiates it to the target through an antenna, increasing the temperature through the absorption of RF energy in the skin. The system causes pain and ultimately reduces combat power.A cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system consisting of four parts—an electromagnetic-wave generator,a highvoltage power supply,a test cell, and a system controller—generates an RF signal of≥1 W in a continuous waveform at a 95-GHz center frequency,as well as a chemical solution with a dielectric constant similar to that of the skin of a living organism. An increase of 5°C lasting approximately 10 s was confirmed through an experiment.

文摘An offshore shoal or bar refracts ocean surface waves and causes wave focusing/defocusing on the adjacent beach. Alongshore currents are modulated by rip currents associated with the wave focusing/defocusing patterns.

文摘Over the last two decades, lymphoma idiotype vaccines have been the first human cancer vaccines to show striking evidence of biological and clinical efficacy on the one hand,as well as clinical benefit on the other.More recently, however, three large-scale,independent,randomized clinical trials on idiotypic vaccination have failed to achieve their main clinical endpoints for reasons likely to depend more on flaws in each clinical trial’s study design than on each vaccination strategy per se.Independently of these considerations,a major hurdle for the development of this substantially innocuous and yet potentially very effective type of treatment has been the fact that, even to date,no factors ascertainable before vaccination have been prospectively singled out as predictors of subsequently vaccine-induced,idiotypespecific immune as well as clinical responses. The aim of this review article is precisely to analyze what has been and what could be done in this respect in order to give a greater chance of success to future trials aimed at regulatory approval of idiotype vaccines.
