This work investigates the reuse of natural(SCB)and minopropyltriethoxysilanemodifed(MSCB)sugarcane bagasse fbres in cementitious composites.ugarcane bagasse fbres are pre-used in the treatment of motor oil contaminat...This work investigates the reuse of natural(SCB)and minopropyltriethoxysilanemodifed(MSCB)sugarcane bagasse fbres in cementitious composites.ugarcane bagasse fbres are pre-used in the treatment of motor oil contaminated effluents.A full factorial design is used to identify the effects of fbre type(SCB and MSCB),fbre length(0.6 and 1.2 mm),fbre amount(1 and 2 wt%)and fbre condition(before and after oil filtration)on apparent density,water absorption,apparent porosity,ultra-pulse velocity,dynamic modulus,flexural strength and modulus.SCB fibres lead to increased apparent density compared to MSCB fibre reinforced composites.MSCB fibres contribute to reduce composite porosity,leading to higher mechanical properties.The smaller area of MSCB fibres promotes a larger amount of cementitious phase per unit volume,thus increasing the strength of the sample.Longer sugarcane fbres(1.2 mm)have a larger surface area,leading to a higher fibre concentration per unit volume,which increases water absorption.The amount of fibre has no significant effect on mechanical and physical responses.Composites made with 2 wt%0.6 mm long MSCB fibres achieve promising results for non-structural civil engineering applications.展开更多

This paper deepens in the relations betw...The actual challenge in health is to manage patients with chronic diseases from a holistic approach where technology around the patient and at the city enhances their wellness. This paper deepens in the relations between health, devices, and models of technological cities and how these can be modeled to provide a more cost efficient solution while less invasive and more natural to the end users. In light of this, usable and accessible software and a wide range of devices, ranging from PC, smartphone, tablet and SmartTV have been tested. This manuscript will give good comprehension on how technology and disease management care models interact with the patient.展开更多
Building on our previous work,we assess how social solidarity towards migrants and refugees has changed before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,by collecting and analyzing a large,novel,and longitudinal da...Building on our previous work,we assess how social solidarity towards migrants and refugees has changed before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,by collecting and analyzing a large,novel,and longitudinal dataset of migration-related tweets.To this end,we first annotate above 2000 tweets for(anti-)solidarity expressions towards immigrants,utilizing two annotation approaches(experts vs.crowds).On these annotations,we train a BERT model with multiple data augmentation strategies,which performs close to the human upper bound.We use this high-quality model to automatically label over 240000 tweets between September 2019 and June 2021.We then assess the automatically labeled data for how statements related to migrant(anti-)solidarity developed over time,before and during the COVID-19 crisis.Our findings show that migrant solidarity became increasingly salient and contested during the early stages of the pandemic but declined in importance since late 2020,with tweet numbers falling slightly below pre-pandemic levels in summer 2021.During the same period,the share of anti-solidarity tweets increased in a sub-sample of COVID-19-related tweets.These findings highlight the importance of long-term observation,pre-and post-crisis comparison,and sampling in research interested in crisis related effects.As one of our main contributions,we outline potential pitfalls of an analysis of social solidarity trends:for example,the ratio of solidarity and anti-solidarity statements depends on the sampling design,i.e.,tweet language,Twitter-user accounts’national identification(country known or unknown)and selection of relevant tweets.In our sample,the share of anti-solidarity tweets is higher in native(German)language tweets and among“anonymous”Twitter users writing in German compared to English-language tweets of users located in Germany.展开更多
This paper discusses the application of Integrated Design Process for the design of low-cost housing in Chile.It aims to question common practice for the development of housing based on prescriptive regulations and no...This paper discusses the application of Integrated Design Process for the design of low-cost housing in Chile.It aims to question common practice for the development of housing based on prescriptive regulations and non-interdisciplinary work,which has resulted in poor quality building requirements.The first stage consisted in defining performance requirements for aspects such as energy demand,U value,air tightness and indoor air quality for a specific case of low-cost houses located in the city of Temuco.An integrated design process was carried out by an interdisciplinary team of professionals specialized in each of the performance aspects that were taken into account.The construction and post-occupancy stages were characterized by verifying the performance requirements,which resulted in a low-cost house prototype that included strategies for energy efficiency and a healthy indoor environment.展开更多
