Accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS) is an ultrasensitive technique for measuring long-lived actinides,e.g.,^(236)U,^(237)Np and Pu isotopes.In order to improve the detection limit for actinides abundance,and to increase the detection efficiency in actinides AMS measurement,a 16-strip silicon detector was used to identify actinides at the Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage in Caserta,Italy.The sensitivity of ^(236)U/^(238)U was 1×10^(-11) by special resolution and 5.0×10^(-12) by time resolution.The pulse height defect of^(236)U in an ion-implanted silicon detector in the low-energy range with 17.26 MeV is presented. 展开更多

Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation of dispersed liquid flow in turbulent stirred tanks

Liquid-liquid dispersion is often performed in stirred tanks,which are valued for their ease of operation,high droplet generation rate and effective droplet dispersion.Many relevant simulations use the Eulerian-Eulerian method,combining population balance equations with statistical models to forecast droplet breakage.Conversely,the Eulerian-Lagrangian(E-L)method provides precise tracking of individual droplets,which is crucial for simulating dispersion processes.However,E-L simulation faces challenges in integrating droplet breakage effectively.To address this issue,our research introduces a probabilistic approach for droplet breakages.It assumes that a longer time increases the likelihood of breakup;a droplet breaks if the calculated probability exceeds a random value from 0 to 1.Consequently,the simulated breakage frequency becomes independent of the Lagrangian time step.The Sauter mean diameter and droplet size distribution can be accurately predicted by this probabilistic approach.By closely monitoring droplet motion,we reveal the complexity of droplet trajectories and the detailed patterns of circulation in stirred tanks.These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of liquidliquid dispersion dynamics. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Hepatic manifestations in chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL)are common:Elevation of liver enzymes frequently occurs,and differential diagnosis is often challenging.Liver infiltration by leukemic cells,primary and secondary hepatic malignancies,drug-induced hepatotoxicity,immunological disorders,and infections have been reported.Nevertheless,syncytial giant cell hepatitis(GCH)as a manifestation of autoimmune hepatitis in patients with CLL is an extremely rare condition,currently reported only in anecdotal cases.CASE SUMMARY Here,we report the case of a 62-year-old Caucasian woman affected by CLL,who developed GCH with peculiar histopathological features.The patient was evaluated for abnormal liver test results.Liver histology revealed significant inflammatory lymphomononuclear infiltrates with a plasma cell component,widespread syncytial changes in the hepatocytes with gigantocellular features,hepatocyte rosettes,and the typical feature of emperipolesis,consistent with a diagnosis of GCH.The patient was treated with corticosteroids and mycophenolate mofetil,resulting in a complete biochemical response.CONCLUSION Early histological diagnosis of GCH is crucial in patients with CLL,with mycophenolate mofetil representing a promising treatment option. 展开更多

Phosphogypsum(PG),a hard-to-dissipate by-product of the phosphorus fertilizer production industry,places strain on the biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functions of storage sites.This pervasive problem is already widespread worldwide and requires careful stewardship.In this study,we review the presence of potentially toxic elements(PTEs)in PG and describe their associations with soil properties,anthropogenic activities,and surrounding organisms.Then,we review different ex-/in-situ solutions for promoting the sustainable management of PG,with an emphasis on in-situ cemented paste backfill,which offers a cost-effective and highly scalable opportunity to advance the value-added recovery of PG.However,concerns related to the PTEs'retention capacity and long-term effectiveness limit the implementation of this strategy.Furthermore,given that the large-scale demand for ordinary Portland cement from this conventional option has resulted in significant CO_(2) emissions,the technology has recently undergone additional scrutiny to meet the climate mitigation ambition of the Paris Agreement and China's Carbon Neutrality Economy.Therefore,we discuss the ways by which we can integrate innovative strategies,including supplementary cementitious materials,alternative binder solutions,CO_(2) mineralization,CO_(2) curing,and optimization of the supply chain for the profitability and sustainability of PG remediation.However,to maximize the co-benefits in environmental,social,and economic,future research must bridge the gap between the feasibility of expanding these advanced pathways and the multidisciplinary needs. 展开更多

Quantitative determination of the electron beam radiation dose for SARS-CoV-2 inactivation to decontaminate frozen food packaging 被引量:2

The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) from cold-chain foods to frontline workers poses a serious public health threat during the current global pandemic. There is an urgent need to design concise approaches for effective virus inactivation under different physicochemical conditions to reduce the risk of contagion through viral contaminated surfaces of cold-chain foods. By employing a time course of electron beam exposure to a high titer of SARS-CoV-2 at cold-chain temperatures, a radiation dose of 2 kGy was demonstrated to reduce the viral titer from 10^(4.5)to 0 median tissue culture infectious dose(TCID_(50))/mL. Next,using human coronavirus OC43(HCoV-OC43) as a suitable SARS-CoV-2 surrogate, 3 kGy of high-energy electron radiation was defined as the inactivation dose for a titer reduction of more than 4 log units on tested packaging materials. Furthermore, quantitative reverse transcription PCR(RT-qPCR) was used to test three viral genes,namely, E, N, and ORF1ab. There was a strong correlation between TCID50and RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2detection. However, RT-qPCR could not differentiate between the infectivity of the radiation-inactivated and nonirradiated control viruses. As the defined radiation dose for effective viral inactivation fell far below the upper safe dose limit for food processing, our results provide a basis for designing radiation-based approaches for the decontamination of SARS-CoV-2 in frozen food products. We further demonstrate that cell-based virus assays are essential to evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 inactivation efficiency for the decontaminating strategies. 展开更多

Do False Beliefs Predict Increased Circumcision Satisfaction in Men?

Medical male circumcision has been adopted by the WHO, and other professional public health and medical bodies, as a vital weapon in the fight against HIV. This has prompted a large body of research into the acceptability of the procedure, attitudes to it, and barriers to it. A systematic review of these studies found that satisfaction with circumcision is strongly associated with having accurate knowledge about it. A survey-based paper by Earp, Sardi and Jellison entitled “False beliefs predict increased circumcision satisfaction in a sample of US American men” is the only one to find the opposite. It therefore merits scrutiny. The present article presents the results of a critical examination of the study. Serious flaws were discovered. Half of the small number of 10 “true/false” statements used in its survey are questionable. All the large body of literature that contradicts the findings of Earp and co-workers is ignored. Importantly, the crucial question about whether dissatisfied circumcised males hold false beliefs about circumcision is not considered. Unlike most of the research on the acceptability of circumcision, the study is not motivated by a desire to evaluate the likely effectiveness of a public health measure, or how best to implement it. Rather it appears to be an attempt by a prominent anti-circumcision activist and his associates to generate a body of literature that they can then cite to further their cause. Considering this, and the serious flaws it contains, the study should be dismissed as misleading, biased and undermining public health. 展开更多

Most of the isolated electrical systems throughout the world suffer from similar problems of fragility and high dependence on external resources to generate energy. Smart Grid solutions and integration of renewable energies in order to solve their problems have increased, although it is necessary to know their specific characteristics to select the optimal solutions for each case. Therefore, as the overall objective of INSULAE Project, the development of an Investment Planning Tool, IPT, is on the way. This paper provides a view on a characterization methodology developed for the set of Reference Islands and how it will help to exploit the IPT developed. For that, characterization vectors have been defined based on a selection of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). And Reference Islands have been obtained from the analysis of KPIs data gathered from EU islands considering the vectors formed. The linkage of new islands to reference islands helps provide the new islands with an assessment on the possibility space of their investment plans with the aim of being a decarbonization plan considering the demonstrations already evaluated. 展开更多

In this work,we intend to perform a detailed study on the crystallization process of PZT 53/47 nanostructured powders by starting out with an amorphous precursor synthesized by a sol-gel based solution.Our interests also lie in the feasibility for controlling the average grain size of the final structure in the submicron range on an ab initio basis.Purposely,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),Raman(Stokes and Anti-Stokes),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) are used to examine the microstructural characteristics based on previously reported differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetric analysis(DTA/TGA) data.The results show a crystallization temperature of 800℃ to attain pure perovskite phase with excellent morphological quality,average grain size 〈DG〉〈 300 nm and with average crystallite size 〈DC〉〈15 nm. 展开更多

Background: The evaluation for epilepsy surgery of patients with malformations of cortical development (MCDs) in areas of clinically important cerebral function is a challenge because of the unpredictable localization of critical sensory, motor, and cognitive function. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) source localization of evoked fields can address whether functional reorganization of primary sensory modalities exists in MCDs. Methods: Consecutive patients with MRI- demonstrated rolandic and calcarine cortex MCDs were identified who had a 148- channel whole- head MEG study to identify the localization of primary somatosensory and visual cortices. Reorganization was considered when localization contrasted that expected upon general anatomic or homuncular rules and was defined against controls. Results: Twelve patients (n = 12) were studied. Six had focal cortical dysplasia, two had polymicrogyria and schizencephaly, and four had isolated polymicrogyria. In the patients with cortical dysplasias, the somatosensory cortices were identified outside the rolandic area. In the two patients with polymicrogyria and schizencephaly, the somatosensory cortices remained in the rolandic areas as long as the anatomy was not distorted by the presence of the schizencephalic cleft. In the patients with isolated polymicrogyria, the somatosensory cortex was mapped without evidence of reorganization. Conclusion: In patients with epileptic MCDs involving rolandic and calcarine regions, cortical function may be reorganized if the MCDs are due to an abnormal neuronal or glial proliferation (i.e., cortical dysplasia) but may not be in MCDs caused by abnormal cortical organization (i.e., polymicrogyria). 展开更多

Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent skin lesions predominantly involving the body folds. It is caused by heterozygous mutations in the ATP2C1 gene, encoding the human secretory pathway Ca2+ /Mn2+ - ATPase protein 1 (hSPCA1). In this report we describe the molecular studies performed in eight HHD cases from Italy that led us to identify six different mutations scattered through the ATP2C1 gene in seven of eight cases. Four of the detected mutations were novel. Our results confirm the high allelic heterogeneity of the ATP2C1 gene and support the notion that HHD is a genetically homogeneous disorder. Furthermore, we created a table summarizing all previously reported ATP2C1 mutations, adapting the nomenclature, if needed, according to the guidelines of the Human Genome Variation Society. 展开更多

Mutual regulation between cell cycle and transcription termination factor TTF2

Most transcriptional activities are silent during mitosis and reactivated upon mitotic exit;however,the underlying detailed mechanisms are still largely unknown.We revealed that the cell cycle regulatory machinery anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome(APC/C)and mitotic checkpoint complex(MCC)are coupled with transcription termination to modulate cell cycle progression via the transcription termination factor TTF2.The protein level of TTF2 oscillated during cell cycle progression,and increased in the S and G2/M phases while maintaining a low level in late mitosis and the G1 phase.Knockdown of TTF2 induced G2/M arrest,while overexpression of TTF2 accelerated the M/G1 transition and promoted cell proliferation.Mechanistic studies revealed that TTF2 was ubiquitinated by APC/CCDH1 and targeted for proteasomal degradation.Interestingly,TTF2 bound to CDC20 and prevented MCC formation during normal mitosis.However,TTF2 was degraded by APC/CCDH1 when the cell encountered persistent G2/M arrest,which would release CDC20 and promote the assembly of MCC.Additionally,TTF2 was overexpressed in almost all solid tumors and correlated with poor survival in patients with several kinds of solid tumors.Thus,these findings establish a link between transcription termination and cell cycle regulation,revealing an unexpected mechanism by which TTF2 plays dual roles in mitosis by binding to CDH1 and CDC20 to balance the activation of APC/C and MCC. 展开更多

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery system remains a significant challenge in the current treatment of solid tumors,primarily due to their limited penetration capabilities.Herein,we successfully engineer photodynamic gel-bombs(DCM@OPR)capable of penetrating deeply into tumor tissues utilizing the photodynamic-triggered explosive energy and receptor-mediated transcytosis,significantly enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of breast cancer.The photodynamic gel-bombs were fabricated by loading powerful components of chlorin e6 and MnO_(2) nanoparticles,as wellas Doxorubicin,into a crosslinked Ca^(2+)-gel.Upon exposure to laser irradiation,the obtained photodynamic gel-bombs are capable of generating explosive energy,resulting in their fragmentation into numerous nanofragments.The photodynamic-triggered explosive energy subsequently drives these nanofragments to deeply penetrate into tumor tissues through gap leakage among tumor cells.In addition,the photodynamictriggered explosive energy also promotes the escape of those therapeutic components(including chlorin e6,MnO_(2) nanoparticles,and doxorubicin)and nanofragments from lysosomes.In the subsequent stages,these nanofragments also exhibit excellent transcytosis capacity,facilitating deep penetration into tumor tissues.As expected,the enhanced penetration and accumulation of therapeutic components into tumor tissues can be achieved,significantly enhancing the anti-proliferation capacity against breast cancer. 展开更多

Geothermal power plants(GPP)with high non condensable gases(NCG)content geothermal fluid have shown to be environmental impacting relating to their energy production,which could be critical if no corrective actions are achieved.The GPP of Kizildere 3 U1,located in Türkiye(Denizli),in where the geothermal fluid contains high percentage of CO_(2),99%of the NCG fraction,which represents the 3%of the geothermal fluid mass,is taken as a relevant case study to implement a new innovation consisting of NCG reinjection to reduce the amount of NCGs released to the atmosphere.In order to calculate the present environmental impacts which the plant is causing(baseline);and the potential reduction of environmental impacts which can be achieved with the innovation(reinjection),a life cycle assessment(LCA)calculation were developed.Primary data were collected for all the relevant stages of the energy conversion cycle and complemented where necessary with secondary data from other geothermal power plants studies.The main results of the baseline environmental assessment show that the construction phase is the most impacting phase due to the materials used in the power plant building construction,electrical generation equipment and distributed machinery and infrastructures;the effects in the operation phase are dominated by the geothermal fluid composition.In this sense,the application of CO_(2) reinjection at the Turkish site into the reservoir will prevent the emission of 1,700 tons⋅year1 in the pilot site and 10%of the total emissions released along the life span of the GPP. 展开更多

Objective The associations of physical multimorbidity with depressive symptoms have been investigated in a number of studies.However,whether patterns of chronic physical conditions have comparatively different associations with depressive symptoms remains unclear.This study aimed to investigate the associations of physical multimorbidity patterns with depressive symptoms.Design This study was designed as a nationwide cross-sectional survey in Japan.setting General sample of the Japanese population.Participants Adult Japanese residents were selected by a quota sampling method.Data were analysed from 1788 residents who reported one or more chronic health conditions.results Among four physical multimorbidity patterns:cardiovascular-renal metabolic(CRM),skeletal-articular digestive(SAD),respiratory-dermal(RDE)and malignant-digestive urologic(MDU),multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that the RDE pattern showed the strongest association with depressive symptoms(aOR=1.68,95%CI:1.21 to 2.31 for the pattern score highest quartile,compared with the lowest quartile),followed by SAD and MDU patterns(aOR=1.41,95%CI:1.01 to 1.98 for the SAD pattern score highest quartile;1.41,95%CI:1.01 to 1.96 for the MDU pattern score highest quartile,compared with the lowest quartile).In contrast,the CRM pattern score was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms(aOR=1.31,95%CI:0.90 to 1.89 for the pattern score highest quartile,compared with the lowest quartile).Conclusions Physical multimorbidity patterns have different associations with depressive symptoms.Among these patterns,patients with the RDE pattern may be at a higher risk for developing depressive symptoms.This study reinforces the evidence that cluster pattern of chronic health conditions is a useful measure for clinical management of multimorbidity as it is differently associated with mental health status,which is one of the crucial outcomes for multimorbid patients. 展开更多

The battery management system is employed to monitor the external temperature of the lithium-ion battery in order to detect any potential overheating.However,this outside–in detection method often suffers from a lag and is therefore unable to accurately predict the battery’s real-time state.Herein,an inside–out frequency response approach is used to accurately monitor the battery’s state at various temperatures in real-time and correlate it with the solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)evolution of the graphite electrode.The SEI evolution at temperatures of−15,25,60,and 90℃exhibits certain regular characteristics with temperature change.At a temperature of−15℃,the Li^(+)-solvent interaction of lithium-ion slowed down,resulting in a significant reduction in performance.At 25℃,a LiF-rich inorganic SEI was identified as forming,which facilitated lithium-ion transportation.However,high temperatures would induce decomposition of lithium hexafluorophosphate(LiPF_(6))and lithium-ion electrolyte.At the extreme temperature of 90℃,the SEI would be organic-rich,and Li_(x)P_(y)F_(z),a decomposition product of lithium salts,was further oxidized to Li_(x)PO_(y)F_(z),which led to a surge in the charge-transfer resistance at SEI(R_(sei))and a reduction in Coulombic efficiency(CE).This changing relationship can be recorded in real time from the inside out by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)testing.This provides a new theoretical basis for the structural evolution of lithium-ion batteries and the regular characterization of EIS. 展开更多

The selection of waste-valorization projects is a complex decision process that involves many factors and variables to guarantee an appropriate definition of the best waste-management strategy to be applied for a specific waste typology.Different technological approaches can be identified based on the diverse waste types,such as fish byproducts,spent coffee grounds,used cooking oils,and sewage sludge.To identify the most suitable and sustainable method for processing each residue type,one must consider multiple criteria in the decision-making process(i.e.,economic,technological,environmental,social,and political)to define a specific wastemanagement strategy.In this study,the analytical-hierarchy-process model is applied to evaluate wastetreatment projects based on the criteria above.This methodological approach involves several steps.First,existing state-of-the-art projects are critically reviewed to identify more advanced solutions for waste management.Second,biowaste projects are characterized by the application of multiple criteria and subcriteria.Finally,prioritized solutions are generated to elucidate the ranking of biowaste based on a hierarchical structure. 展开更多
