In the present study, the total antioxidant capacity and phenolic composition of three berry fruits (blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry) cultivated in Nanjing were investigated. Blueberry, with a Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) value of 14.98 mmol Trolox/100 g dry weight (DW) exhibited the strongest total antioxidant capacity using both the 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and the 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. Blueberry also had the highest total phenolic content (TPC, 9.44 mg gallic acid/g DW), total flavonoid content (TFC, 36.06 mg rutin/g DW), and total anthocyanidin content (TAC, 24.38 mg catechin/g DW). A preliminary analysis using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that the blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry samples tested contained a range of phenolic acids (including gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, eUagic acid, and cinnamic acid) and various types of flavonoids (flavone: luteolin; flavonols: rutin, myricetin, quercetrin, and quercetin; flavanols: gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, catechin, and catechin gallate; anthocyanidins: malvidin-3-galactoside, malvidin-3-glucoside, and cyanidin). In particular, the blueberries had high levels of proanthocyanidins and anthocyanidins, which might be responsible for their strong antioxidant activities. These results indicate a potential market role for berries (especially blueberries) as a functional food ingredient or nutraceutical.展开更多

Tzvel.,widely distributed at eastern Eurasian steppe and divided into gray-green type and yellow-green type, has different stress resistance to environment. In the present study, the water-soluble polysaccharides from two ecotypes of L.chinensis were analyzed in detail, and the differences between polysaccharides from the two ecotypes of L.chinensis in the yield, monosaccharide composition, molecular weight and structure were clarified. The polysaccharides of L.chinensis were composed of both neutral and acidic polysaccharides. The neutral polysaccharides contained mannose, glucose, galactose, xylose and arabinose, and mainly consisted of β-1,4-Glcp,α-1,3-Galp and α-1,2-Xylp residues. The acidic polysaccharides contained mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, xylose and arabinose. However, the yields, monosaccharides contents and the molecular weights of the polysaccharides from the two ecotypes of L.chinensis were different. Moreover, the resistance type(gray-green type) of L.chinensis contained a number of α-1,3-Manp and reducing end of β-Glcp residues, and much more O-methyl groups than normal type(yellow-green type) of L.chinensis.The differences of the polysaccharides of the two ecotypes of L.chinensis might be due to the long-term environmental adaptability of plant, and the differences of the polysaccharides might influence the stress resistance of L.chinensis.展开更多

Quick evaluation of the diagnosis of this disease is crucial. Successful eradication in the area indicates a need to test all bee colonies, but this is expensive and time consuming. A new method of detecting Paenibacillus larvae using the RIDA?COUNT test (R-Biopharm AG, Germany) was verified in the present study. The test is based on the principle of the cultivation test with MYPGPn medium, coloration of the bacteria with TTC (2,3,5-triphenyltetra-zoliumchloride) chromophore, and heat treatment of the sample. Using this new method, color-highlighted colonies of P. larvae can be established on the seventh day after inoculating the spores. An identical number of colonies grown with the classic cultivation test on Petri dishes containing MYPGPn medium or RIDA?COUNT-P. larvae (RC-PL) sheets were verified.展开更多

These choices lead to the expression of optimal behaviour strategies such as floral constancy. Optimal foraging strategies such as floral constancy improve a colony’s chances of survival, however to our knowledge, there has been no research on decision making based on optimal storage strategies. Here we show, using diagnostic radioentomology, that decision making in storer bees is influenced by nectar sugar concentrations and that, within 48 hours of collection, honeybees workers store carbohydrates in groups of cells with similar sugar concentrations in a nonrandom way. This behaviour, as evidenced by patchy spatial cell distributions, would help to hasten the ripening process by reducing the distance between cells of similar sugar concentrations. Thus, colonies which exhibit optimal storage strategies such as these would have an evolutionary advantage and im- prove colony survival expectations over less efficient colonies and it should be plausible to select colonies that exhibit these preferred traits.展开更多
