The wave energy converter with oscillating water column (OWC) is one of the most promising devices because of its simple structur...Wave energy can be converted to the electrical energy by using a wave energy converter. The wave energy converter with oscillating water column (OWC) is one of the most promising devices because of its simple structure and easy maintenance. In this device, an oscillating water column due to the wave motion is used to drive an air column. An air turbine is used to convert the pneumatic energy of this bi-directional airflow into the mechanical energy. The counter-rotating impulse turbine for wave energy conversion has been proposed and tested so far, and the average efficiency has been shown to about 0.3. On the contrary, in another offshore experiment, it has been reported that the power generation efficiency of this turbine is larger than Wells turbine in case of small waves. However, there is a scarcity of the detailed characteristics data of counter-rotating impulse turbine. In a previous study, the authors investigated the effect of rotor blade solidity and setting angle of guide vane on the performance of this turbine, and they clarified that the efficiency of this turbine is higher than impulse turbine with single rotor in the range of high flow coefficients. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of rotor blade profile on the turbine performance by using the computation fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The inner and outer angles of turbine rotor blade are changed in the range of 50° to 70°. The commercial CFD software of SCRYU/Tetra of Cradle Co. Ltd. was used in the present work. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were used as the governing equations and the low Reynold’s number SST k-ω model was used to predict the turbulent stresses. As a result, it was found that the inner angle of γ = 70° and the outer angle of γ = 60° of the turbine rotor blades can give the best turbine efficiency and it shows the efficiency close to the impulse turbine with single rotor, even in the range of low flow coefficients.展开更多
As described in this paper, we propose a new haptic interface for a service robot. For safety with service robots working in a space where people live, some notification before collision with an obstacle is desirable....As described in this paper, we propose a new haptic interface for a service robot. For safety with service robots working in a space where people live, some notification before collision with an obstacle is desirable. To achieve such a function, we developed a master-slave manipulator system in which the slave manipulator surface is covered with many proximity sensors. Additionally, we developed a haptic device that feeds back proximity sense information to the operator using small vibration motors. We attached the haptic device to the arm of the operator and vibrated the vibration motor corresponding to the sensor. Thereby, the operator was able to ascertain the position of an object near the manipulator, and to make the robot maneuver to avoid it before collision. To confirm the system usefulness, we equipped subjects with the developed proximity sense presentation device and performed a detection-position-specific experiment and an obstacle avoidance experiment in a narrow space. As results of the detection position specific experiment on five subjects, four subjects reported the detection position correctly. The remaining one person failed because of his particular arm shape. Operation experiments conducted in a narrow space showed that all subjects' work was successful when given feedback of proximity sense information. Nobody was successful without proximity sense information. Results of these two experiments demonstrate that this proposed system is useful for obstacle avoidance of a master-slave manipulator system.展开更多

The purpose of this series was to review our 10 years’ experienc...The pectoralis major myocutaneous pedicle flap (PMMF) is still being used by many surgeons and plays an important role in head and neck reconstruction. The purpose of this series was to review our 10 years’ experience with the PMMF in head and neck reconstruction. One hundred and two patients who underwent the PMMF technique were reviewed on the clinical records. Postoperative complications were classified into flap loss, hemorrhage, infection, fistula formation, wound dehiscence and donor site complication. Eighty two patients (80.4%) demonstrated no complication. Six patients among 102 patients (5.9%) demonstrated total or partial skin necroses. Three female patients were completely dissatisfied with the cosmetic appearance after the PMMF. One of them required a reconstructive surgery with the latissimusdorsi flap. Without surgical expertise in plastic surgical field, an ear-nose-throat or an oral surgeon can performed the PMMF technique provided the operator is well aware of serious and frequent complications of this “workhorse” procedure.展开更多

But it is known ...Objectives: Endotoxin (ET) is a structural molecule of the Gram-negative bacilli extracellular membrance, which activates targeted cells including macrophages and neutrophils, and causes septic shock. But it is known that the conventional ET measurement method has many problems;for example, a discrepancy between plasma ET concentration and clinical manifestation in the septic patients has been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a newly developed method (Endotoxin Activity Assay (EAA)) to measure the ET activity (EA) in patients under sepsis compared with the prior method of the limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay and explore the association between EA levels and patients’ severity. Method: We measured the EA levels in 40 patients (aged 63.5 +/- 17.7 years) admitted to the ICU. EA level was measured using a chemiluminometer (Autolumat LB953;EG & Berthold). Patients were divided into 5 groups: 1) control group;2) systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) group;3) sepsis (SIRS and infection) group;4) severe sepsis group and 5) septic shock group. We then compared the EA level between each group and control group. We made the statistical evaluation by unpaired t test and significant difference was p Results: The EA levels were significantly increased as sepsis severity rises. The measured EA levels were (0.18 +/- 0.09), (0.33 +/- 0.19), (0.39 +/- 0.16), (0.65 +/- 0.25) and (0.78 +/- 0.34) in control, SIRS, sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock groups, respectively. In the EA level measured by EAA, severe patients had a tendency to exceed the cutoff value. Conclusion: The EA levels were significantly correlated as patients’ severity rise. In this study, for the suppression of surge phenomenon resulting in the extension of the stable operating range of centrifugal compressor to lower flow rate, the compressed air at the compressor exit was re-circulated and injected into the impeller inlet by using the double injection nozzle system. The experiments were performed to find out the optimum circumferential position of the second nozzle relative to the fixed first one and the optimum inner diameter of the injection nozzles, which are able to most effectively reduce the flow rate of surge inception. Moreover, in order to examine the universality of these optimum values, the experiments were carried out for two types of compressors.展开更多
This paper proposes an individual fitness method genetic algorithm(IFM-GA)for carbon fiber-reinforced plastic(CFRP).The strength of CFRP depends on the carbon fiber allocation and orientation.Waste carbon fiber is gen...This paper proposes an individual fitness method genetic algorithm(IFM-GA)for carbon fiber-reinforced plastic(CFRP).The strength of CFRP depends on the carbon fiber allocation and orientation.Waste carbon fiber is generated if this design is inappropriate.Consequently,CFRPs are less cost-effective.It is necessary to optimize the allocation and orientation as design variables to solve this problem.The problem involves combinatorial optimization.The genetic algorithm(GA)is suitable for combinatorial optimization.However,it is difficult to obtain an optimal solution using the GA owing to the large number of combinations.Hence,the IFM-GA is developed in this study.It is a GA-based method with a different fitness calculation.The GA calculates the fitness of each design,whereas the IFM-GA calculates the fitness of each design element.As a result,the IFM-GA yields a higher-stiffness design than the GA.To conclude,the IFM-GA can enable optimum fiber allocation and orientation,whereas the GA cannot.展开更多

The flame-hole angle and the distance from flame hole to heating object are ...The purpose of this study is to understand the factor that influence the heating efficiency of the outward and inward multi-hole gas burner. The flame-hole angle and the distance from flame hole to heating object are chosen as the experimental parameters. The measurement of the flame temperature distribution is carried out on each experimental condition. The observation of combustion flame, by the Schlieren method, is done from the purpose to understand the combustion phenomenon on the heating efficiency. LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) is used for the test fuel gas. The compositions of LPG are propane 97.5vol%, butane 0.2vol% and methane + ethylene 2.3vol%. The optimum ranges of the flame-hole angle and the distance from flame hole to heating object are clarified. The experimental correlation equations for the outward and inward multi-flame-hole gas burner are proposed.展开更多
