Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2/Nrf2) is a redox sensitive master regulator of battery of antioxidant enzymes including those involved in GSH antioxidant machinery. Earlier we reported that ethanol (ETOH) elicits apoptotic death of pri-mary cortical neurons (PCNs) which in partly due to depletion of intracellular GSH levels. Further a recent report from our laboratory illustrated that ETOH exacerbated the dysregulation of GSH and caspase mediated cell death of pure cortical neurons that are compromised in Nrf2 machinery (Narasimhan et al., 2011). In various experimental models of neurodegeneration, neuronal antioxidant defenses mainly GSH has been shown to be supported by astrocytes. We therefore sought to determine whether astrocytes can render protection to neurons against ETOH toxicity, particularly when the function of Nrf2 is compromised in neurons. The experimental model consisted of co-culturing PCAs with Nrf2 downregulated PCNs that were exposed with and without 4 mg/mL ETOH for 24 h. Monochlorobimane (MCB) staining followed by FACS analysis showed that astrocytes blocked ETOH induced GSH decrement in Nrf2-silenced neurons as opposed to exaggerated GSH depletion in Nrf2 downregulated PCNs alone. Similarly, the heightened activa-tion of caspase 3/7 observed in Nrf2-compromised neurons was attenuated when co-cultured with astrocytes as meas-ured by luminescence based caspase Glo assay. Furthermore, annexin-V-FITC staining followed by FACS analysis re-vealed that Nrf2 depleted neurons showed resistance to ETOH induced neuronal apoptosis when co-cultured with as-trocytes. Thus, the current study identifies ETOH induced dysregulation of GSH and associated apoptotic events ob-served in Nrf2-depleted neurons can be blocked by astrocytes. Further our results suggest that this neuroprotective ef-fect of astrocyte despite dysfunctional Nrf2 system in neurons could be compensated by astrocytic GSH supply.展开更多

In legal limitation for abortion, low information about abortion laws and consequences of un-safe abortion can result in that women refer to illegal providers. This study investigated knowledge of young women about abortion laws, its complications and their consent with intentional abortion. Near to 50% of participants were not informed about national abortion legislation and its criminal law, and more than 66% of participants were not aware of unsafe abortion consequences. Of them 16% believed that abortion must not be allowed at all, and 47% expressed that legal facilities for safe abortion should be proved. High education and importance of using contraceptive were the most important variables in correlation with more information about abortion law and consequences. Providing information for women about abortion laws and complication should be more emphasized to prevent unsafe abortion especially in women with lower age and education.展开更多

Blindness is a disability, which can lead to immature and inappropriate behaviors in children, and increase aggression in teenagers. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of music on aggressive behavior in visually impaired students. Methods: This research was an experimental pretest-posttest study with a control group and was conducted in 2012. The study population of this research was teenagers with visual impairments in Bojnord, northeast of Iran. For this purpose, Buss and Perry aggression questionnaire and Rutter behavior questionnaire for teachers were used. Twelve music therapy sessions were held, each lasting 90 minutes. T-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. Results: There were not significant differences between the two groups regarding age, socioeconomic status, and education level of parents, as ascertained prior to the pretest. In the intervention group, the declines of aggression scores were statistically significant. There were significant differences between the results of posttest in the intervention and control groups. Conclusion: Music therapy reduces aggression in teens with blindness and can be used as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce emotional states in this group.展开更多

Improving life expectancy in developing countries makes teeth care an important topic. This study assessed reasons of tooth extraction (TE), oral health determinants and demographic factors of permanent TE in Iranian adults. Adult people who referred to dental clinic of Mashhad Medical University in 2012 for dental extraction and lived in Mashhad city, participated in this study by convenient sampling method after obtaining informed consent. Demographic characteristics, oral health status, health habit and reasons of TE of participants were assessed. Data were analyzed by SPSS11.5 by Chi-Square, T-Test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis tests. Totally 254 people participated (383 extracted teeth) that 55% were female. Mean age of participants was 39.3 years;females were 6.1 years younger than males. The main reason of TE was dental caries (55.1%), following by impaction. There was significant difference between average times of tooth brushing in both sexes, but difference was not shown in sugar intake. Except in people with college degrees that dental caries is the main cause of TE. With increase in life expectancy to more than 70 years old in Iranian, the age of TE especially in women is younger than expected. The most common cause of TE is dental caries that seem in spite of improving health indexes in Iran, poor oral hygiene remains as a problem. There is no significant difference between frequency of sugar intake and level of education that indicates unhealthy dietary habits related to tooth decay.展开更多
