AIMTo describe factors associated with treatment failure and frequency of resistance-associated substitutions (RAS).METHODSHuman immunodefciency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfected patients starting a first direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimen before February 2016 and included in the French ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH cohort were eligible. Failure was defned as: (1) non-response [HCV-RNA remained detectable during treatment, at end of treatment (EOT)]; and (2) relapse (HCV-RNA suppressed at EOT but detectable thereafter). Sequencing analysis was performed to describe prevalence of drug class-specifc RAS. Factors associated with failure were determined using logistic regression models.RESULTSAmong 559 patients, 77% had suppressed plasmaHIV-RNA 〈 50 copies/mL at DAA treatment initiation41% were cirrhotic, and 68% were HCV treatmentexperienced. Virological treatment failures occurred in22 patients and were mainly relapses (17, 77%) thenundefined failures (3, 14%) and non-responses (29%). Mean treatment duration was 16 wk overall. Posttreatment NS3, NS5A or NS5B RAS were detected in10/14 patients with samples available for sequencinganalysis. After adjustment for age, sex, ribavirin useHCV genotype and treatment duration, low platelecount was the only factor signifcantly associated with ahigher risk of failure (OR: 6.5; 95%CI: 1.8-22.6). CONCLUSIONOnly 3.9% HIV-HCV coinfected patients failed DAAregimens and RAS were found in 70% of those failingLow platelet count was independently associated withvirological failure. 展开更多

Background: The assessment of iron status using a single biomarker of iron metabolism is not enough sensitive and specific to reliably diagnose iron deficiency associated with multiple comorbidities. The objective of this study was to describe the iron status of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa using a multi-criteria approach based on the determination of blood ferritin, sTfR, CRP and the calculation of sTfR-F index. Methods: This study was conducted using a retrospective panel of 933 sera/plasmas. We determined serum ferritin concentration, serum sTfR concentration, and C-reactive protein (CRP) by immunoturbidimetry for each subject. The sTfR-F index was determined by calculating the sTfR/log ferritin ratio. The statistical test used was Chi2. Results: Regardless of the inflammatory syndrome, we determined 3.80%, 30.29%, and 42.70% iron deficiency based on the separate interpretation of ferritin concentration, sTfR, and sTfR-F calculation, respectively. We used those biomarkers in addition to CRP in an algorithm for the diagnosis of iron deficiency. Subjects without inflammatory syndrome, had iron deficiency of 2.89% (n = 26). Taking into account the presence of an inflammatory syndrome, the frequency obtained was n = 88 (9.78%). Overall, iron deficiency was diagnosed in 114 (12.67%) patients when we used the diagnostic algorithm. Conclusion: The use of diagnostic algorithms combining several biomarkers of iron metabolism and taking into account the presence or absence of an inflammatory syndrome is a good approach to detect a large number of iron deficiencies in a population. Therefore, an assessment of the effectiveness of different diagnostic algorithms is necessary. 展开更多

Context: The consequences of non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) are harmful in terms of morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected adolescents. There is a little data in this population in West Africa, about non-adherence to ART. Objective: To identify factors associated with non-adherence to ART in adolescents at the Pediatric Ambulatory Treatment Center (PATC) of the pediatric department of Yopougon University Hospital. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May to July 2017 among adolescents aged 10 to 19 years old at PATC of pediatrics department of Yopougon University Hospital. We have considered that adolescent was not adherent to ART when he affirm that he have not taking ART at least once in the week before the survey. A logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with non-adherence to ART. Results: Overall 166 adolescents were included. The median age was 15 years old [IQI = 13 - 17 years]. They had a detectable viral load greater than 1000 copies/ml in 41.8% of cases. The rate of non-adherence to ART was 40.4%. The factors associated with non-adherence to ART were male [OR = 2.5 (CI = 1.1 - 10.0)], having parent widowed [OR = 7.8 (CI = 1.6 - 39.3)] or divorced [RC= 3.7 (IC=1.1 - 13.5)], CD4 inclusion rate ≥ 500 cells/ml [OR = 8.5 (CI = 1.6 - 45.5)] and duration on ART ≥ 10 years [OR = 8.9 (CI = 1.6 - 50)]. Conclusion: A rigorous therapeutic education taking into account associated factors in this study is necessary to reduce the rate of non-adherence among adolescents at PATC. 展开更多

This paper investigates the social networks usage by students in Abidjan city, Côte d’Ivoire. We focus on a descriptive or quantitative analysis to understand the motivations and how students make use of internet and social networks. More than six hundred forms were distributed to persons we have deemed as students. In return, we received more than 93% of the forms that have been processed. The study highlights the materials and the digital platforms that students used the most. The majority of the respondents reported to have access to the social networks in their mobile phones, with WhatsApp leading this application ranking, followed by Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Tik Tok. The survey shows that two third of our respondents are aged from 19 to 25 years old and almost half of the respondents spend daily 2 to 5 hours on digital platforms. The investigation also reveals that the main online activities are the e-commerce, chatting, information, and entertainment. The paper addresses also the online harassment of the students and it shows that more than one tenth of them have been victims of cyber-bullying. This study might be useful for governments, institutions, academia, individuals and professionals in order to communicate efficiently with a given population for a better use of social networks and to prevent students from harassment. 展开更多

This article explores the use of social networks by workers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with particular emphasis on a descriptive or quantitative analysis aimed at understanding motivations and methods of use. More than five hundred and fifty questionnaires were distributed, highlighting workers’ preferred digital channels and platforms. The results indicate that the majority use social media through their mobile phones, with WhatsApp being the most popular app, followed by Facebook and LinkedIn. The study reveals that workers use social media for entertainment purposes and to develop professional and social relationships, with 55% unable to live without social media at work for recreational activities. In addition, 35% spend on average 1 to 2 hours on social networks, mainly between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. It also appears that 46% believe that social networks moderately improve their productivity. These findings can guide marketing strategies, training, technology development and government policies related to the use of social media in the workplace. 展开更多

Humanity has regularly faced the threat of epidemics and pandemics over the course of history.Successful at-tempts to protect populations were initially made with the development of new vaccines, such as those against plague and cholera, under the leadership of the bacteriologist Waldemar Haffkine.Vaccines have led to a complete eradication of smallpox and bovine plague and a major reduction in other infectious diseases including diphthe-ria,typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, and Haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis. While a few coronaviruses have been identified that seasonally infect humans causing mild symptoms, the emergence of a new zoonotic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has rapidly triggered the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)as a global pandemic responsible for widespread mortality. The severe phenotypes of COVID-19 resemble a previous infectious threat that was initially designated as hospital fever and puerperal fever, presently known as sepsis.A SARS-CoV-2 infection has frequently been considered as a form of viral sepsis(owing to com-mon features with bacterial sepsis)but is also associated with an array of specific and unique symptoms.Rapid progress in anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development,in particular, the design of efficient messenger RNA(mRNA)and recombinant adenovirus vaccines,is crucial for curbing the pandemic. 展开更多
