The goal of this study was to determine whether climate has affected vegetation regrowth over the past decade (2000 to 2010) in post-fire forest ecosystems of the United States and Canada. Our methodology detected tre...The goal of this study was to determine whether climate has affected vegetation regrowth over the past decade (2000 to 2010) in post-fire forest ecosystems of the United States and Canada. Our methodology detected trends in the monthly MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) timeseries within forest areas that burned between 1984 and 1999. The trends in summed growing season EVI (composited to 8 km spatial resolution) within all burned area perimeters showed that nearly 1.6% post-fire forest area declined in vegetation greenness cover significantly (p < 0.05) over the past decade. Nearly 62% of all post-fire forest area showed a non significant EVI regrowth trend from 2000 to 2010. Regression results detected numerous significantly negative trend pixels in post-fire areas from 1994-1999 to indicate that forest regrowth has not yet occurred to any measurable level in many recent wildfire areas across the continent. We found several noteworthy relationships between annual temperature and precipitation patterns and negative post-fire forest EVI trends across North America. Change patterns in the climate moisture index (CMI), growing degree days (GDD), and the standardized precipitation index (SPI) were associated with post-fire forest EVI trends. We conclude that temperature warming-induced change and variability of precipitation at local and regional scales may have altered the trends of large post-fire forest regrowth and could be impacting the resilience of post-fire forest ecosystems in North America.展开更多
In this letter,the streamer propagation in the atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet with afloating electrode nozzle driven by the kHz AC power supply is investigated.The current signal induced by the space charges a...In this letter,the streamer propagation in the atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet with afloating electrode nozzle driven by the kHz AC power supply is investigated.The current signal induced by the space charges and the mean propagation velocity of the guided ionization waves are measured by the capacitive probe method in the discharge region.The space charges in the guided ionization waves are found to increase with the applied voltage,which enhances both the electric field near the streamer head and the propagation velocity.The applicability of the streamer mechanism to the propagation of the guided ionization waves is validated by this electrical diagnostic method.展开更多
In large spatial,temporal,and spatio-temporal databases,the concept of dimensions–time and space–is central and their efficient processing has always been a great concern.A Geographic Information System(GIS)is widel...In large spatial,temporal,and spatio-temporal databases,the concept of dimensions–time and space–is central and their efficient processing has always been a great concern.A Geographic Information System(GIS)is widely known for its efficient and sophisticated handling of the spatial databases;however,integration of the time domain introduces additional complexities.Considerable research is ongoing in this area.Though numerous approaches have already been proposed in the literature to address the time-related challenges in GIS community,such as the development of temporal GIS data models,this study contributes to these ongoing efforts through extensions to the Parametric Data Model.Parametric database approaches(Parametric Data Model)have been developed to handle dimensional data such as space,time,belief,etc.In this study,the time dimension is of specific interest and we propose the integration of parametric approaches to GIS to absorb the temporal burden.The temporal processing of the data is done using parametric approaches that address the limitation of GIS to support temporal queries and temporal analysis of phenomena.Using the AutoConViz tool,developed for spatio-temporal data modeling and visualization,results can be directly integrated into standard GIS software programs such as ArcGIS and further processed seamlessly along with and in a similar manner to other attributes.展开更多
