In underground mining, especially in entry-type excavations, the instability of surrounding rock structures can lead to incalculable losses. As a crucial tool for stability analysis in entry-type excavations, the critical span graph must be updated to meet more stringent engineering requirements.Given this, this study introduces the support vector machine(SVM),along with multiple ensemble(bagging, adaptive boosting, and stacking)and optimization(Harris hawks optimization(HHO),cuckoo search(CS))techniques,to overcome the limitations of the traditional methods. The analysis indicates that the hybrid model combining SVM,bagging, and CS strategies has a good prediction performance, and its test accuracy reaches 0.86.Furthermore,the partition scheme of the critical span graph is adjusted based on the CS-BSVM model and 399 cases.Compared with previous empirical or semi-empirical methods, the new model overcomes the interference of subjective factors and possesses higher interpretability.Since relying solely on one technology cannot ensure prediction credibility, this study further introduces genetic programming(GP)and kriging interpolation techniques. The explicit expressions derived through GP can offer the stability probability value, and the kriging technique can provide interpolated definitions for two new subclasses. Finally,a prediction platform is developed based on the above three approaches, which can rapidly provide engineering feedback. 展开更多

This work established a quantitative method to access the shear stability of aerobic granular sludge(AGS)and validated its feasibility by using the mature AGS from a pilot-scale(50 tons/day)membrane bioreactor(MBR)for treating real municipal wastewater. The results showed that the changing rate( S)of the peak area(S)of granule size distribution(GSD)exhibited an exponential relationship(R^(2)≥0.76)with the shear time(y=a−b·c^(x)),which was a suitable indicative index to reflect the shear stability of different AGS samples. The limiting granule size(LGS)was defined and proposed to characterize the equilibrium size for AGS after being sheared for a period of time, whose value in terms of Dv50 showed high correlation(R^(2)=0.92)with the parameter a.The free Ca^(2+)(28.44-34.21 mg/L)in the influent specifically interacted with polysaccharides(PS)in the granule’s extracellular polymeric substance(EPS)as a nucleation site, thereby inducing the formation of Ca precipitation to enhance its Young’s modulus, while Ca^(2+) primarily interacted with PS in soluble metabolic product(SMP)during the initial granulation process.Furthermore, the Young’s modulus significantly affected the parameter a related to shear stability(R^(2)=0.99).Since the parameter a was more closely related(R^(2)=1.00)to S than that of the parameter b or c,the excellent correlation(R^(2)=0.99)between the parameter a and the wet density further verified the feasibility of this method. 展开更多

The stability of the tunnel portal slope is crucial for ensuring safe tunnel construction. Thus,a sound stability evaluation is of significance.Given the unique geological characteristics of tunnel portal slopes,it is necessary to establish a specific evaluation indicator system that differs from those used for ordinary slopes.Based on the unascertained measure method, uncertainties in the indicator are addressed by introducing the left and right half cloud asymmetric cloud model to optimize the linear membership function. The subjectivity of confidence criterion level identification is also improved by using the Euclidean distance method. Thus,a stability evaluation model for the tunnel portal slope is established based on the improved unascertained measure method. Finally, using the collected tunnel portal slope data, the results of four evaluation methods are compared with the safety factor levels. The evaluation methods include the traditional unascertained measure method, the method improved by using the left and right half cloud asymmetric cloud model, the method improved by using the Euclidean distance method, and the method improved by using both the left and right half cloud asymmetric cloud model and the Euclidean distance method. The results show that the accuracy rates of these four methods are 50%,55%,85%,and 90%,respectively.Among them, the joint improvement method has the slightest deviation, with only one level, while the other three methods had deviations of two levels. This result verifies the stability and effectiveness of the joint improvement method, providing a reference for tunnel portal slope stability evaluation. 展开更多

Deep high-energy rock masses are susceptible to dynamic and static disasters in underground caverns when stress waves superimpose on them. Scientifically evaluating the stability of surrounding rock mass under such conditions is fundamental for predicting and preventing related hazards. This study combines laboratory dynamic disturbance tests with numerical simulations to analyze changes in the three-dimensional stress state of surrounding rock caused by stress waves. It was found that stress waves not only alter the magnitude of unit stresses but also cause rotation of the principal stress axes. Based on the failure approach index(FAI), a new dynamic response evaluation index for brittle surrounding rock—the Energy Hazard Index(FAI_(E)) is proposed from an energy perspective. This index can derive functional expressions based on different strength criteria, offering good extensibility. Using the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion as an example, the specific functional expression of FAI_(E) is provided. Comparison with experimental results confirms that the evaluation outcomes align with the dynamic response characteristics of surrounding rock mass, simultaneously considering both tensile and shear failure modes. Parameter sensitivity tests demonstrate the applicability of the index under complex conditions. Furthermore, the relationship between FAIE and commonly used dynamic disturbance evaluation parameters—such as Peak Particle Velocity(PPV)—has been examined, demonstrating that FAIE provides a more accurate and direct assessment of stability. Finally, a rapid engineering application method for FAIE is presented. The research findings hold significant importance for future stability evaluation and support design of surrounding rock in deep underground engineering projects. 展开更多

Taking a high-speed train in China as an example, using computer simulation technology and comparing with the test data, the three current methods including linear stability analysis method, nonlinear stability analysis method and the field testing criterion are studied to evaluate stability of high-speed trains.A new stability evaluation method is proposed which can be used to evaluate lateral stability of high-speed vehicle based on the codes of UIC 515and UIC 518.From the viewpoint of taking the most unfavorable track conditions into account and improving the safety margin, the new method uses the root mean square of bogie lateral acceleration as a criterion to evaluate the lateral stability of high-speed trains.Numerical example shows that the proposed method not only considers the forced vibration caused by track irregularities in the actual practice, but also takes the instability self-excited vibration into account,so it can realize early warning of bogie slight unstable oscillation, meanwhile the method itself does not involve complex algorithms which has the possibility of engineering applications. 展开更多

A slope stability evaluation method is proposed combining group decision theory, the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. The index weight assignment of each evaluation element is determined by group decision theory and the analytic hierarchy process, and the membership degree of each indicator is determined based on fuzzy set theory.According to the weights and memberships, the membership degrees of the criterion layer are obtained by fuzzy operations to evaluate the slope stability. The results show that(1)the evaluation method comprehensively combines the effects of multiple factors on the slope stability, and the evaluation results are accurate;(2)the evaluation method can fully leverage the experience of the expert group and effectively avoid evaluation errors caused by the subjective bias of a single expert;(3)based on a group decision theory entropy model, this evaluation method can quantitatively evaluate the reliability of expert decisions and effectively improve the efficiency of expert group discussion;and(4)the evaluation method can transform the originally fuzzy and subjective slope stability evaluation into a quantitative evaluation. 展开更多

In nature, a slope stability is determined by the ratio of a sliding resistance to a slide force. The slide force of a marine deep-water continental slope is mainly affected by sediment mechanics properties, a topography, and a marine seismic. However, the sliding resistance is mainly affected by sedimentary patterns and a sedimentary stress history. Both of these are different from case to case, and their impact can be addressed when the data are organized in a geographic information system(GIS). The study area on the continental slope in Zhujiang River Mouth Basin in South China Sea provides an excellent opportunity to apply GIS spatial analysis technology for the evaluation of the slope stability. In this area, a continental slope topography and a three-dimension(3-D) topography mapping show a sea-floor morphology and the distribution of a slope steepness in good detail, and the sediment analysis of seabed samples and an indoor appraisal reveals the variability of a sediment density near the sea-floor surface. On the basis of the results of nine geotechnical studies of submarine study areas, it has worked out that an equivalent cyclic shear stress ratio is roughly between 0.158 and 0.933, which is mainly depending on the initial water content of sediment. A regional density, slope and level of anticipated seismic shaking information are combined in a GIS framework to yield a map that illustrates a continental slope stability zoning under the influencing factors in Zhujiang River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea. The continental slope stability evaluation can contribute to north resources development in the South China Sea, the marine functional zoning, the marine engineering construction and adjust measures to local conditions, at the same time also can provide references for other deep-water slope stability analysis. 展开更多

Rock slide is one of the common geohazard in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, and it affects the shipping of the Yangtze River and the safety of people living on the banks. In order to investigate the internal fracturing mechanism of rock mass, distributed microseismic monitoring network was arranged with 15 three component geophones(3C geophones), deployed at borehole and out of the sliding mass in the unstable Dulong slope. Stein Unbiased Risk Estimation(SURE) method was used to noise suppression for the microseismic record, and decomposition parameters of the Continuous Wavelet Transform(CWT) were determined with maximum energy of correlation coefficient(MECC) method. The signal-to-noise ratio was tripled after the process, and source parameters are obtained with full waveform inversion. The rupture volume model was counted by the irregular grid statistics with the events’ density. It shows that the rock slide is of a small scale and composed of a single block. Moreover, the relationship among microseismicity, displacement and rainfall were discussed in the paper. The deformation rate was dramatically changed in the period of intensive events. There is a good consistency especially in the rainfall period. Although there is a time delay, continuous rainfall is more likely to cause the increase of microseismic events. The results show that the Dulong slope is a shallow rock slide in the state of creep deformation, and the rupture mechanism of the rock mass is left-lateral normal fault with shear failure. The research provides more key information for the early warning and prevention of rock slides and helps to reduce the risk of geohazards. 展开更多

Real-time quantitative PCR(qPCR)is a reliable and widely used technique for analyzing the expression profiles of target genes in different species, and reference genes with stable expressions have been introduced for the normalization of the data. Therefore, stability evaluation should be considered as the initial step for qPCR experiments. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda(J.E.Smith)(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)is a polyphagous pest that consumes many plant species and seriously threatens corn production around the world. However,no studies thus far have examined the stability of reference genes in this pest.In this study, the expression profiles of the eight candidate reference genes of Actin, elongation factor 1 alpha(EF1α),elongation factor 2(EF2),glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase(GAPDH),ribosomal protein L3(RPL3),ribosomal protein L13(RPL13),alpha-tubulin(α-TUB),and beta-1-tubulin(β-1-TUB)were obtained from S.frugiperda in different samples and the stability was evaluated byΔCt,BestKeeper,geNorm,NormFinder, and RefFinder methods. The results of pairwise variation(V)calculated by GeNorm indicated two reference genes could be selected for normalization. Therefore, the combinations of the most stable reference genes for different experimental conditions of S.frugiperda were shown as follows:EF2 and RPL13 for developmental stages,RPL3 andβ-1-TUB for larval tissue samples,EF2 and EF1αfor the larval samples treated with different temperatures,RPL3 and EF1αfor the larval samples under starvation stress, and RPL13 and EF1αfor all the samples. Our results lay the foundation for the normalization of qPCR analyses in S.frugiperda and could help guarantee the accuracy of subsequent research. 展开更多

Deep-seated toppling in the upper reaches of the Lancang River, southwest China involves deformations exceeding 100 m in depth. The slope deformation is initiated by river downcutting and evolves distinctive characteristics with a depth of river incision. In this study,we propose a system for evaluating the stability of deep-seated toppled slopes in different evolutionary stages. This system contains identification criteria for each evolutionary stage and provides the corresponding stability evaluation methods.Based on the mechanical and kinematic analysis of slope blocks, the specific stage of slope movement can be identified in the field through outcrop mapping,in situ tests, surface displacement monitoring, and adit and borehole explorations. The stability evaluation methods are established based on the limiting equilibrium theory and the strain compatibility between the undisturbed zone and the toppled zone. Finally, several sample slopes in different evolution stages have been investigated to verify the applicability and accuracy of the proposed stability evaluation system. The results indicate that intense tectonic activity and rapid river incision lead to a maximum principal stress ratio exceeding 10 near the slope surface, thus triggering widespread toppling deformations along the river valley. When considering the losses of joint cohesion during the further rotation process, the safety factor of the slope drops by 7%e28%.The self-stabilization of toppling deformation can be recognized by the layer symmetry configuration after the free rotation of the deflected layers.Intensely toppled rock blocks mainly suffer sliding failures beyond the layer symmetry condition. The factor of safety of the K73 rockslide decreased from 1.17 to 0.87 by considering the development of the potential sliding surface and the toesaturated zone. 展开更多

Generally, after a tree analysis, an arborist indicates the required maintenance operations and the timing for periodical inspection. Field conditions, tree species and biomechanical defects influence the plan. Three old trees (Populus spp. and Celtis australis) located within Golf Club Verona (Sommacampagna, Italy) were monitored periodically from 2010 to present. Therefore, the shallow strata stability of coral reefs in the South China Sea should be evaluated. This study aims to investigate the profiles for the shallow strata of coral reefs in the southwest of the Yongshu Reef, particularly in the hydrodynamic marine environment, and to establish a geological model for numerical simulation using Geo-Studio. The shallow strata of the coral reefs include mass gravel, sand gravel, mid-coarse sand, silty sand, fine sand, and reef limestone. The shallow reef slope near the lagoon is similar to a ‘layer cake', in which the side close to the sea is analogous to a ‘block cake'. The simulation results showed that coral reef stability depends on wave loads and earthquake strength and on the physical properties of coral reefs. The factor of safety for the outer reef is greater than 10.0 under static, wave, and seismic conditions; this indicated that the outer reefs were less affected by waves and earthquakes. However, the factor of safety next to the lagoon varied from 0.1 to 5.3. The variation was primarily caused by the thick strata of coral reefs close to the sea(reef limestone, typically with the thickness > 10 m and equivalent to a block). The soil and rock layers in the coral reef strata with thicknesses < 10 m showed weak engineering geological characteristics. Our findings can provide useful information to future construction projects on coral reefs. 展开更多

Prompted by emerging developments in connected and automated vehicles, parallel steering control, one aspect of parallel driving, has become highly important for intelligent vehicles for easing the burden and ensuring the safety of human drivers. This paper presents a parallel steering control framework for an intelligent vehicle using moving horizon optimization. The framework considers lateral stability, collision avoidance and actuator saturation and describes them as constraints, which can blend the operation of a human driver and a parallel steering controller effectively. Moreover, the road hazard and the steering operation error are employed to evaluate the operational hazardous of an intelligent vehicle. Under the hazard evaluation, the intelligent vehicle will be mainly operated by the human driver when the vehicle operates in a safe and stable manner. The automated steering driving objective will play an active role and regulate the steering operations of the intelligent vehicle based on the hazard evaluation. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed hazard-evaluation-oriented moving horizon parallel steering control approach, various validations are conducted, and the results are compared with a parallel steering scheme that does not consider automated driving situations. The results illustrate that the proposed parallel steering controller achieves acceptable performance under both conventional conditions and hazardous conditions. 展开更多
